Five new species of the leaf-beetle genus Monolepta Chevrolat (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae) from China.

ABSTRACT: In this study, five new species of the leaf-beetle genus Monolepta Chevrolat, 1836 (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae) are described from China: M.albipunctata sp. nov., M.alticola sp. nov., M.bivittata sp. nov., M.mengsongensis sp. nov., and M.rubripennis sp. nov. A key and catalogue to the 68 Chinese species of Monolepta with the second and third antennomeres of equal length are given as well as photographs of the habitus and aedeagus of the new species and type habitus images of 37 known species.

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Monolepta hieroglyphica, two-spotted leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Project description:Monolepta hieroglyphica, in view of its wide-ranging host and highly polyphagous characteristics, has become an important agricultural pest in East and Southeast Asian countries. To better understand its biology and develop control strategies, we present a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly of M. hieroglyphica, with contig N50 of 18.62 Mb and scaffold N50 of 241.916 Mb. Using 156x Hi-C data, we anchored a total length of 2,313 Mb (91.9% of the genome) to nine chromosomes. We predicted 46,561 genes using an integrated approach. The completeness of the final reported genome and proteome were assessed by BUSCO and show high values of 99.4% and 95.2%, respectively. The high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly of M. hieroglyphica will be a useful molecular resource for the communities of both beetle and crop protection.

Madurasia obscurella Jacoby, syn. n., is a new junior synonym of Madurasia undulatovittata (Motschulsky), comb. n. A lectotype is designated for Madurasia obscurella. Literature on the biology and management of Madurasia undulatovittata is reviewed.

Andersonoplatus, a new, remarkable leaf litter inhabiting genus of Monoplatina (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae, Alticini).

Project description:Andersonoplatus, a new genus with 16 new species from Venezuela (A. andersoni, A. bechyneorum, A. castaneus, A. flavus, A. jolyi, A. laculata, A. lagunanegra, A. macubaji, A. merga, A. merida, A. microoculus, A. peck, A. rosalesi, A. sanare, A. saviniae) and Panama (A. baru), is described and illustrated. All the specimens were collected in leaf litter by R. Anderson and S. and J. Peck. Andersonoplatus is compared to Andersonaltica Linzmeier & Konstantinov, Apleuraltica Bechyne, Distigmoptera Blake and Ulrica Scherer.

Additionally, Aplosonyxancorafulvescens Chen, 1964 is elevated to species. A key to the Chinese species of Aplosonyx is provided.

Project description:BackgroundApproximately 120 species of the chrysomelid genus Gonioctena are currently known from Palaearctic, Nearctic and Oriental Regions, amongst them, 51 occur in China.New informationTwo new species of the genus Gonioctena, G.klapperichi sp. nov. (Fujian) and G.oberthueri sp. nov. (Sichuan), are described and illustrated from China. Distinguishing characters from closely-related species are presented, respectively. The Gonioctena fauna of China now includes 53 species, of which about 60% are endemic. Ovoviviparity is newly recorded in G.oberthueri sp. nov.

The genus Gallerucida Motschulsky in Taiwan (Insecta, Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae).

Project description:Species within the genus Gallerucida Motschulsky recorded in Taiwan are revised. Gallerucida bifasciata Motschulsky 1861 G. lutea Gressitt & Kimoto 1963 G. sauteri Chûjô 1938 and G. shirozui Kimoto 1969 are redescribed. Sphenoraia chujoi Lee 2014 is proposed as a junior synonym of G. flaviventris (Baly 1861). Gallerucida thoracica (Jacoby 1888) is recorded as new for Taiwan and redescribed. Lectotypes are designated for Gallerucida nigrita Chûjô 1935 G. sauteri Chûjô 1938 and Eustetha thoracica Jacoby 1888. Biological notes are given on all Taiwanese species of Gallerucida.

Integrative taxonomy of the leaf-beetle genus Gonioctena Chevrolat, 1836 in Taiwan (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Chrysomelinae, Gonioctenini) reveals new synonymies and one new species.

Project description:Taiwanese species of Gonioctena are revised based on morphological, molecular, and ecological information. Gonioctenasubgeminata (Chen, 1934), G.tredecimmaculata (Jacoby, 1888), G.kamikawai (Chûjô, 1958), and G.osawai Kimoto, 1996 are redescribed. The study confirms that Phytodectatredecimmaculatusvar.taiwanensis Achard, 1924 should be considered a junior synonym of G.tredecimmaculata (Jacoby, 1888), along with two new junior synonyms, G.ohmomoiCho et al. 2016 (syn. nov.) and G.riyuetanensisCho et al. 2016 (syn. nov.). Phytodecta (Asiphytodecta) issikii Chûjô, 1958 (syn. nov.) is treated as a junior synonym of Gonioctenascutellaris Baly, 1862, which is removed from synonym with G.fulva (Motschulsky, 1861) (stat. rev.) and redescribed. Gonioctenathoracica Baly, 1862 (syn. nov.), G.dichroa Fairmaire, 1888 (syn. nov.), and G.foochowensis Gruev, 1989 (syn. nov.) are proposed as junior synonyms of G.scutellaris Baly, 1862. A new species, G.liui sp. nov., is described and differentiated ecologically from G.scutellaris. Gonioctenanigroplagiata Baly, 1862 is newly recorded from Matsu Islands and redescribed. Host plants and biological information are provided for all Taiwanese species. Lectotypes are designated for G.scutellaris Baly, 1862, G.thoracica Baly, 1862, and G.nigroplagata Baly, 1862.

Project description:Two new species of the genus Smaragdina Chevrolat from China are reported: S.hejingensis Duan, Wang & Zhou sp. nov. from Xinjiang, and S.magnipunctata Duan, Wang and Zhou sp. nov. from Yunnan. Six species, S.divisa (Jacoby), S.insulana Medvedev, S.kimotoi Lopatin, S.laboissierei (Pic), S.laosensis Kimoto & Gressitt, and S.oculata Medvedev are new country records for China. Color illustrations and line drawings of general habitus and morphological details are given. All types of two new species are deposited in the collection of Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IZ-CAS).

Baoshanaltica is compared to the allied moss-inhabiting genera Cangshanaltica Konstantinov et al. and Phaelota Jacoby, in addition to Minota Kutschera. Sinosphaera is compared to Sphaeroderma Stephens, Omeisphaera Chen & Zia, Jacobyana Maulik, and Kamala Maulik.
