Two new species of the genus Smaragdina Chevrolat, 1836 (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cryptocephalinae) from China.

ABSTRACT: Two new species of the genus Smaragdina Chevrolat from China are reported: S.hejingensis Duan, Wang & Zhou sp. nov. from Xinjiang, and S.magnipunctata Duan, Wang and Zhou sp. nov. from Yunnan. Six species, S.divisa (Jacoby), S.insulana Medvedev, S.kimotoi Lopatin, S.laboissierei (Pic), S.laosensis Kimoto & Gressitt, and S.oculata Medvedev are new country records for China. Color illustrations and line drawings of general habitus and morphological details are given. All types of two new species are deposited in the collection of Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IZ-CAS).

Another species, M.rufiventris Pic, 1926, is reported for the first time in China. Project description:In this study, 21 species of the leaf-beetle genus Aplosonyx in China are described, including three new species, Aplosonyxancorellasp. nov., Aplosonyxnigricornissp. nov. and Aplosonyxwudangensissp. nov., and 1 new record, Aplosonyxduvivieri Jacoby, 1900. Additionally, Aplosonyxancorafulvescens Chen, 1964 is elevated to species. A key to the Chinese species of Aplosonyx is provided.

Project description:In this study, five new species of the leaf-beetle genus Monolepta Chevrolat, 1836 (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae) are described from China: M.albipunctata sp. nov., M.alticola sp. nov., M.bivittata sp. nov., M.mengsongensis sp. nov., and M.rubripennis sp. nov. A key and catalogue to the 68 Chinese species of Monolepta with the second and third antennomeres of equal length are given as well as photographs of the habitus and aedeagus of the new species and type habitus images of 37 known species.

Revision of Taiwanese species of Atrachya Chevrolat, 1836 (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae): descriptions of three new genera, two new species, and designations of three new synonyms.

Project description:The genus Atrachya Chevrolat is redefined based on study of the type species A. menetriesii (Faldermann, 1835). All Taiwanese species of Atrachya are transferred to three new genera: A. hirashimai Kimoto, 1976 and A. nitidissima (Chûjô, 1935) are transferred to Neochya gen. nov.; A. mediofasciata Kimoto, 1976 is transferred to Tsouchya gen. nov.; A. unifasciata Takizawa, 1978 is transferred to Chinochya gen. nov. Two species are described: N. chengi sp. nov. and N. tsoui sp. nov. Atrachya bicoloripennis (Chûjô, 1938) and A. saramao (Chûjô, 1962) are regarded as synonyms of N. nitidissima (Chûjô, 1935) comb. nov., and Monolepta tsoui Lee, 2009 is synonymized with T. mediofasciata (Kimoto, 1976) comb. nov. Monolepta sublata Gressitt & Kimoto, 1963 is redescribed and transferred to Chinochya gen. nov. Taiwanese records of Monolepta sublata are based on misidentifications and represent specimens of C. unifasciata. Variablity of adult color patterns is discussed.

Pachybrachis (coleoptera, chrysomelidae, cryptocephalinae) of eastern Canada.

Project description:Seventeen Pachybrachis species occurring in eastern Canada [Ontario (ON), Québec (QC), New Brunswick (NB), Nova Scotia (NS), and Prince Edward Island (PE)] are treated by the authors. Two new national records were discovered, both from southernmost Ontario: P. cephalicus Fall and P. luctuosus Suffrian. Four species were new provincial records: P. cephalicus (ON), P. luctuosus (ON, QC), P. obsoletus Suffrian (NB), P. peccans (PE). A fully illustrated key to the Pachybrachis of eastern Canada is provided and supported with extensive photographs, distribution maps, and plant associations. Three species were distributed from southern Ontario into at least one province in the Maritimes (P. nigricornis (Say), P. obsoletus Suffrianand P. peccans Suffrian). Six species were distributed along the shores of the Great Lakes (Erie, Michigan, and Ontario) and rivers (Ottawa, Saguenay and St. Lawrence), but unknown from central and northern ON and QC (P. bivittatus (Say), P. hepaticus hepaticus (F. E. Melsheimer), P. othonus othonus (Say), P. pectoralis (F. E. Melsheimer), P. spumarius Suffrianand P. trinotatus (F. E. Melsheimer)). Seven species were rare, five being found exclusively from southern ON (P. calcaratus Fall, P. cephalicus, P. luridus (Fabricius), P. subfasciatus (J. E. LeConte)and P. tridens (F. E. Melsheimer)), with two having, in addition, a disjunct population in QC (P. atomarius (F. E. Melsheimer)and P. luctuosus). One species was found to be the northern most extension of an eastern United States (US) distribution into the eastern townships of QC (P. m-nigrum (F. E. Melsheimer)). There were no Pachybrachis that could be considered arctic, subarctic, or boreal species; no specimens were found from Labrador and Newfoundland, and all species had southern affinities. Pachybrachis atomarius, P. calcaratus, P. luridus, P. subfaciatus, and P. tridens, not seen over the last 30-70 years, may be extirpated from eastern Canada.

An interactive multi-entry key to the species of Megalostomis Chevrolat, with description of a new species from Paraguay (Chrysomelidae, Cryptocephalinae).

Project description:The main goal of this contribution is to release an interactive multi-entry key to all known species of the genus Megalostomis Chevrolat. This key constitutes a new tool created to aid the identification of the species of this diverse genus, which occasionally may be difficult to identify to the species-level, due to the lack of reference collections for most countries within its distribution range, and to the presence of intra-specific variation and secondary sexual characters. It is expected that this on-line key will facilitate future periodic updates, and will benefit all those persons interested in identifying these taxa. The present paper also includes the description of Megalostomis juanenrique sp. n., a new species from Paraguay. In addition, Megalostomis gigas Lacordaire, and Megalostomis robustipes Monrós are newly cited for the fauna of Paraguay. Pachybrachis sassii, a new species from the Mediterranean Giglio Island (Italy) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cryptocephalinae).

Project description:Pachybrachis sassii, new species is described from Giglio Island, of the Tuscan Archipelago (Italy). The new species belongs to the nominotypical subgenus and is closely related to Pachybrachis salfii Burlini, 1957, from which it differs in the shape of the median lobe of the aedeagus and in the pattern of the yellow raised spots on the elytra and pronotum. Ecological observations are made. The neotype of Pachybrachis salfii from Colloreto, Monte Pollino (Italy) is designated.
