<i>Vanuatubasis</i> Ober and Staniczek is a genus of damselfly endemic to Vanuatu. Little is known about the distribution and general natural history of the genus. We present the results of 14 weeks of fieldwork in Vanuatu to provide a better understanding of the biology of this genus. Project description:Species distributions are dependent on interactions with abiotic and biotic factors in the environment. Abiotic factors like temperature, moisture, and soil nutrients, along with biotic interactions within and between species, can all have strong influences on spatial distributions of plants and animals. Terrestrial Antarctic habitats are relatively simple and thus good systems to study ecological factors that drive species distributions and abundance. However, these environments are also sensitive to perturbation, and thus understanding the ecological drivers of species distribution is critical for predicting responses to environmental change. The Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica, is the only endemic insect on the continent and has a patchy distribution along the Antarctic Peninsula. While its life history and physiology are well studied, factors that underlie variation in population density within its range are unknown. Previous work on Antarctic microfauna indicates that distribution over broad scales is primarily regulated by soil moisture, nitrogen content, and the presence of suitable plant life, but whether these patterns are true over smaller spatial scales has not been investigated. Here we sampled midges across five islands on the Antarctic Peninsula and tested a series of hypotheses to determine the relative influences of abiotic and biotic factors on midge abundance. While historical literature suggests that Antarctic organisms are limited by the abiotic environment, our best-supported hypothesis indicated that abundance is predicted by a combination of abiotic and biotic conditions. Our results are consistent with a growing body of literature that biotic interactions are more important in Antarctic ecosystems than historically appreciated.

Project description:Paeoniflorin, a monoterpene glucoside, is increasingly used in the clinical treatment of many diseases because it has a variety of pharmacological activities. Besides, paeoniflorin has been considered the characteristic chemical constituent of Paeoniaceae plants since it was first reported in 1963. Therefore, how to better develop and utilize paeoniflorin in Paeoniaceae has always been a research hotspot. We reviewed the current knowledge on paeoniflorin in Paeoniaceae, with particular emphasis on its distribution and influencing factors. Moreover, the limited understanding of the biosynthesis pathway has restricted the production of paeoniflorin by synthetic biology. This review provides insights into the post-modification pathway of paeoniflorin biosynthesis and proposes directions for further analysis in the future.

Project description:Vultures are ecologically important primarily because of their scavenging role in cleaning carcasses of the environment. Because of anthropogenic impacts, the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) has suffered catastrophic declines in parts of its range and, thus, information about its global distribution and factors influencing its occurrence within this range are essential for its conservation. To this end, we estimated the global distribution of Egyptian vulture and variables related to this distribution. We used occurrence points (n = 4740) from online data sources and literature, environmental variables related to these sites and Maximum Entropy software to model the distribution of this species and its relationship to environmental variables during the entire year, breeding and overwintering. Out of ~ 49 million km2 study area, the Egyptian vulture had a predicted range of 6,599,508 km2 distributed across three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. The densest distribution was in Southern Europe, India and Northern Africa and a sparser distribution was around Mid and Western Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan. Climate was related to the vulture's most probable range: in particular medium temperature seasonality and low precipitation during the coldest yearly quarter were important variables regardless of the season of observations examined. Conservation of identified habitats and mitigation of anthropogenic impacts to conserve these vultures are recommended for immediate and long-term conservation of the Egyptian vulture globally.

Project description:Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are causative agents of Valley fever, a serious fungal disease endemic to regions with hot, arid climate in the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. The environmental niche of Coccidioides spp. is not well defined, and it remains unknown whether these fungi are primarily associated with rodents or grow as saprotrophs in soil. To better understand the environmental reservoir of these pathogens, we used a systematic soil sampling approach, quantitative PCR (qPCR), culture, whole-genome sequencing, and soil chemical analysis to identify factors associated with the presence of C. immitis at a known colonization site in Washington State linked to a human case in 2010. We found that the same strain colonized an area of over 46,000 m2 and persisted in soil for over 6 years. No association with rodent burrows was observed, as C. immitis DNA was as likely to be detected inside rodent holes as it was in the surrounding soil. In addition, the presence of C. immitis DNA in soil was correlated with elevated levels of boron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and silicon in soil leachates. We also observed differences in the microbial communities between C. immitis-positive and -negative soils. Our artificial soil inoculation experiments demonstrated that C. immitis can use soil as a sole source of nutrients. Taken together, these results suggest that soil parameters need to be considered when modeling the distribution of this fungus in the environment. IMPORTANCE Coccidioidomycosis is considered a highly endemic disease for which geographic range is likely to expand from climate change. A better understanding of the ecological niche of Coccidioides spp. is essential for generating accurate distribution maps and predicting future changes in response to the changing environment. Our study used a systematic sampling strategy, advanced molecular detection methods, and soil chemical analysis to identify environmental factors associated with the presence of C. immitis in soil. Our results demonstrate the fungus can colonize the same areas for years and is associated with chemical and microbiological soil characteristics. Our results suggest that in addition to climate parameters, soil characteristics need to be considered when building habitat distribution models for this pathogen.

Project description:This study investigated the main factors influencing the genetic variance and the variance of breeding values (EBV). The first is the variance of genetic values in the base population, and the latter is the variance of genetic values in the population under evaluation. These variances are important as improper variances can lead to systematic bias. The inverse of the genetic relationship matrix (K -1) and the phenotypic variance are the main factors influencing the genetic variance and heritability (h2). These factors and h2 are also the main factors influencing the variance of EBVs. Pedigree- and genomic-based relationship matrices (A and G as K) and phenotypes on 599 wheat lines were used. Also, data were simulated, and a hybrid (genomic-pedigree) relationship matrix (H as K) and phenotypes were used. First, matrix K underwent a transformation (K* = w K + α 11' + β I), and the responses in the mean and variation of diag(K -1) and offdiag(K -1) elements, and genetic variance in the form of h2 were recorded. Then, the original K was inverted, and matrix K -1 underwent the same transformations as K, and the responses in the h2 estimate and the variance of EBVs in the forms of correlation and regression coefficients with the EBVs estimated based on the original K -1 were recorded. In response to weighting K by w, the estimated genetic variance changed by 1/w. We found that μ(diag(K)) - μ(offdiag(K)) influences the genetic variance. As such, α did not change the genetic variance, and increasing β increased the estimated genetic variance. Weighting K -1 by w was equivalent to weighting K by 1/w. Using the weighted K -1 together with its corresponding h2, EBVs remained unchanged, which shows the importance of using variance components that are compatible with the K -1. Increasing β I added to K -1 increased the estimated genetic variance, and the effect of α 11' was minor. We found that larger variation of diag(K -1) and higher concentration of offdiag(K -1) around the mean (0) are responsible for lower h2 estimate and variance of EBVs.

Project description:The Hexi Corridor is an arid region in northwestern China, where hypoliths are widely distributed, resulting from large amounts of translucent stone pavements. In this region, the water and heat distributions are uneven, with a descent gradient from east to west, which can affect the area's biological composition. The impact of environmental heterogeneity on the distribution of hypolithic microbial communities in this area is poorly understood, and this is an ideal location to investigate the factors that may influence the composition and structure of hypolithic microbial communities. An investigation of different sites with differences in precipitation between east and west revealed that the colonization rate decreased from 91.8% to 17.5% in the hypolithic community. Environmental heterogeneity influenced both the structure and function of the hypolithic community, especially total nitrogen (TN) and soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the effect on taxonomic composition was greater than that on ecological function. The dominant bacterial phyla in all sample sites were Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Deinococcus-Thermus, but the abundances varied significantly between the sampling sites. The eastern site had the highest relative abundance of Proteobacteria (18.43%) and Bacteroidetes (6.32%), while the western site had a higher relative abundance in the phyla Cyanobacteria (62%) and Firmicutes (1.45%); the middle site had a higher relative abundance of Chloroflexi (8.02%) and Gemmatimonadetes (1.87%). The dominant phylum in the fungal community is Ascomycota. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the soil's physicochemical properties were also associated with changes in community diversity at the sample sites. These results have important implications for better understanding the community assembly and ecological adaptations of hypolithic microorganisms.

Project description:Exploring the spatial distribution of China's intangible cultural heritage resources and its influencing factors is an important foundation for their protection and development and a key step toward the integration of culture and tourism. To analyse the geographical distribution patterns of China's 3610 intangible cultural heritage resources and their influencing factors, we comprehensively applied methods such as spatial analysis and geodetectors. The main findings are as follows: (1) In terms of spatial distribution, China's intangible cultural heritage resources are unevenly distributed, with an overall agglomeration-type distribution. The distribution in the north‒south direction is more significant, with more resources in the east than in the west and more resources in the south than in the north. (2) In terms of the spatial distribution of various types of intangible cultural heritage sites, North and East China have always been areas with a high kernel density. (3) In terms of spatial trends, there is a clear correlation between the distribution of intangible cultural heritage resources and the state of economic development and historical and cultural heritage, i.e., the more economically developed and culturally rich a region is, the more resources of intangible cultural heritage there are. (4) The causes of the distribution of China's intangible cultural heritage resources are complicated, the influence of social factors is much greater than that of natural factors, and multidimensional interactions have a relatively significant impact. This study is conducive to the planning and protection of China's intangible cultural heritage resources at the national and regional levels and provides a reference for the sustainable development of China's intangible cultural heritage resources.

Project description:The seasonal rainforests distributed across the tropical karst hills of south China are of high biodiversity conservation value and serve many important ecosystem functions. However, knowledge surrounding distribution patterns of woody plants in tropical karst hills remains limited. In this study, we surveyed the distribution of families, genera and species of woody flora at four slope positions (depression, lower slope, middle slope, and upper slope), and analyzed the influence of topographic and soil variables on the distribution of woody plants in the tropical karst hills of south China. Forty forest plots (each 20 m × 20 m) contained 306 species of woody plants with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥1 cm, representing 187 genera and 66 families. As slope increased, the number of families increased slowly, and the number of genera and species followed a concave-shaped trend, with the lowest number of genera and species in the lower slope position. Differences in species composition were significantly stronger between slope positions than within slope positions. The topographic and soil variables explained 22.4% and 19.6%, respectively, of the distribution of woody plants, with slope position, slope degree, soil potassium and soil water content as the most significant variables. The results of generalized linear mixed model analysis showed that total R2 of fixed effects on variation of woody species richness was 0.498, and rock outcrop rate and soil total phosphorus were the best fitting effects. Our results help to explain the community assembly mechanism and to inform management and protection strategies for species-rich seasonal rainforests in the karst area.

Project description:Youth soccer specialty schools are the primary project to strengthen the foundation of soccer talents, improve the level of soccer development, and achieve the dream of Chinese soccer. Taking 32,775 soccer specialty schools in China as the research sample, ArcGIS spatial analysis technology is used to explore the spatial distribution characteristics of soccer specialty schools and their influencing factors. The analysis shows that the overall distribution of the country forms five quantity concentration area and eight high-density core areas, with a high degree of spatial concentration and significant differences between the East and West. The factors influencing soccer specialty schools include nine factors in four dimensions: historical development, geographical environment, socio-economic, and educational resources. It was found that geographic environment and socio-economy provide the foundation and background for developing educational resources. However, the direct role of educational resources is more significant in a specific educational program, such as soccer specialty schools, followed by socio-economy and geographic environment. This study comprehensively analyzes and interprets soccer specialty schools' spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors. These results enrich the research on the spatial layout of sports, providing necessary theoretical support and practical references for the layout and high-quality development of related industries in China and other countries or regions.
