Practical Online Monitoring of Ionic Liquid Fiber Welding Solvent.

ABSTRACT: Ionic liquids (ILs) are becoming important solvents in commerce, but monitoring their purity and performance in industrial applications presents new challenges. Fiber welding technology utilizes ILs to mold and shape natural fibers (cotton, hemp, flax, silk, and wool) into morphologies that are typically attained only using synthetic, petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics. The result is an atom-efficient process that up-converts fibrous substrates to value-added products and materials. A key aspect of bringing this and other IL-enabled technologies to market relies on efficient monitoring and recycling of IL-based solvents. Implementing online IL quality monitoring enhances the unit economics of these processes. Here, we characterize and report conductivity measurements, refractometry, and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy techniques for online IL monitoring during an industrial fiber welding process. The online analysis enables more efficient recycling of the IL solvent, increasing the process efficiency and product quality.

Solvent and catalyst free vitrimeric poly(ionic liquid) electrolytes.

Project description:Polymer electrolytes (PEs) are a promising alternative to overcome shortcomings of conventional lithium ion batteries (LiBs) and make them safer for users. Introduction of self-healing features in PEs additionally leads to prolonged life-time of LIBs, thus tackling cost and environmental issues. We here present solvent free, self-healable, reprocessable, thermally stable, conductive poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) consisting of pyrrolidinium-based repeating units. PEO-functionalized styrene was used as a co-monomer for improving mechanical properties and introducing pendant OH groups in the polymer backbone to act as a transient crosslinking site for boric acid, leading to the formation of dynamic boronic ester bonds, thus forming a vitrimeric material. Dynamic boronic ester linkages allow reprocessing (at 40 °C), reshaping and self-healing ability of PEs. A series of vitrimeric PILs by varying both monomers ratio and lithium salt (LiTFSI) content was synthesized and characterized. The conductivity reached 10-5 S cm-1 at 50 °C in the optimized composition. Moreover, the PILs rheological properties fit the required melt flow behavior (above 120 °C) for 3D printing via fused deposition modeling (FDM), offering the possibility to design batteries with more complex and diverse architectures.

Plasticized Cellulosic Films by Partial Esterification and Welding in Low-Concentration Ionic Liquid Electrolyte.

Project description:Alternatives to petroleum-based plastics are of great significance not only from the point of view of their scientific and practical impact but to reduce the environmental footprint. Inspired by the composition and structure of wood's cell walls, we used phenolic acids to endow cellulosic fibers with new properties. The fiber dissolution and homogeneous modification were performed with a recyclable ionic liquid (IL) (tetrabutylammonium acetate ([N4444][OAc]):dimethyl sulfoxide) to attain different levels of reaction activity for three phenolic acids ( p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, and syringic acid). The successful autocatalytic Fischer esterification reaction was thoroughly investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C CP-MAS, diffusion-edited 1H NMR and multiplicity-edited heteronuclear single quantum coherence). Control of the properties of cellulose in the dispersed state, welding, and IL plasticization were achieved during casting and recrystallization to the cellulose II crystalline allomorph. Films of cellulose carrying grafted acids were characterized with respect to properties relevant to packaging materials. Most notably, despite the low degree of esterification (DS < 0.25), the films displayed a remarkable strength (3.5 GPa), flexibility (strains up to 35%), optical transparency (>90%), and water resistance (WCA ∼ 90°). Moreover, the measured water vapor barrier was found to be similar to that of poly(lactic acid) composite films. Overall, the results contribute to the development of the next-generation green, renewable, and biodegradable films for packaging applications.

Solvent Dependence of Ionic Liquid-Based Pt Nanoparticle Synthesis: Machine Learning-Aided In-Line Monitoring in a Flow Reactor.

Project description:Colloidal platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) possess a myriad of technologically relevant applications. A potentially sustainable route to synthesize Pt NPs is via polyol reduction in ionic liquid (IL) solvents; however, the development of this synthetic method is limited by the fact that reaction kinetics have not been investigated. In-line analysis in a flow reactor is an appealing approach to obtain such kinetic data; unfortunately, the optical featurelessness of Pt NPs in the visible spectrum complicates the direct analysis of flow chemistry products via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry. Here, we report a machine learning (ML)-based approach to analyze in-line UV-vis spectrophotometric data to determine Pt NP product concentrations. Using a benchtop flow reactor with ML-interpreted in-line analysis, we were able to investigate NP yield as a function of residence time for two IL solvents: 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium triflate (BMPYRR-OTf) and 1-butyl-2-methylpyridinium triflate (BMPY-OTf). While these solvents are structurally similar, the polyol reduction shows radically different yields of Pt NPs depending on which solvent is used. The approach presented here will help develop an understanding of how the subtle differences in the molecular structures of these solvents lead to distinct reaction behavior. The accuracy of the ML prediction was validated by particle size analysis and the error was found to be as low as 4%. This approach is generalizable and has the potential to provide information on various reaction outcomes stemming from solvent effects, for example, differential yields, orders of reaction, rate coefficients, NP sizes, etc.

Protic Ionic Liquid as Reagent, Catalyst, and Solvent: 1-Methylimidazolium Thiocyanate.

Project description:We propose a new concept of the triple role of protic ionic liquids with nucleophilic anions: a) a regenerable solvent, b) a Brønsted acid inducing diverse transformations via general acid catalysis, and c) a source of a nucleophile. The efficiency of this strategy was demonstrated using thiocyanate-based protic ionic liquids for the ring-opening of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes. A wide variety of activated cyclopropanes were found to react with 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate under mild metal-free conditions via unusual nitrogen attack of the ambident thiocyanate ion on the electrophilic center of the three-membered ring affording pyrrolidine-2-thiones bearing donor and acceptor substituents at the C(5) and C(3) atoms, respectively, in a single time-efficient step. The ability of 1-methylimidazolium thiocyanate to serve as a triplex reagent was exemplarily illustrated by (4+2)-annulation with 1-acyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)cyclopropane, epoxide ring-opening and other organic transformations.

Chromatin Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation (LLPS) Is Regulated by Ionic Conditions and Fiber Length.

Project description:The dynamic regulation of the physical states of chromatin in the cell nucleus is crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Chromatin can exist in solid- or liquid-like forms depending on the surrounding ions, binding proteins, post-translational modifications and many other factors. Several recent studies suggested that chromatin undergoes liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in vitro and also in vivo; yet, controversial conclusions about the nature of chromatin LLPS were also observed from the in vitro studies. These inconsistencies are partially due to deviations in the in vitro buffer conditions that induce the condensation/aggregation of chromatin as well as to differences in chromatin (nucleosome array) constructs used in the studies. In this work, we present a detailed characterization of the effects of K+, Mg2+ and nucleosome fiber length on the physical state and property of reconstituted nucleosome arrays. LLPS was generally observed for shorter nucleosome arrays (15-197-601, reconstituted from 15 repeats of the Widom 601 DNA with 197 bp nucleosome repeat length) at physiological ion concentrations. In contrast, gel- or solid-like condensates were detected for the considerably longer 62-202-601 and lambda DNA (~48.5 kbp) nucleosome arrays under the same conditions. In addition, we demonstrated that the presence of reduced BSA and acetate buffer is not essential for the chromatin LLPS process. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of several factors regarding chromatin physical states and sheds light on the mechanism and biological relevance of chromatin phase separation in vivo.

Ionic liquid enables highly efficient low temperature desalination by directional solvent extraction.

Project description:Seawater desalination plays a critical role in addressing the global water shortage challenge. Directional Solvent Extraction (DSE) is an emerging non-membrane desalination technology that features the ability to utilize very low temperature waste heat (as low as 40 °C). This is enabled by the subtly balanced solubility properties of directional solvents, which do not dissolve in water but can dissolve water and reject salt ions. However, the low water yield of the state-of-the-art directional solvent (decanoic acid) significantly limits its throughput and energy efficiency. In this paper, we demonstrate that by using ionic liquid as a new directional solvent, saline water can be desalinated with much higher production rate and thus significantly lower the energy and exergy consumptions. The ionic liquid identified suitable for DSE is [emim][Tf2N], which has a much (~10×) higher water yield than the currently used decanoic acid. Using molecular dynamics simulations with Gibbs free energy calculations, we reveal that water dissolving in [emim][Tf2N] is energetically favorable, but it takes significant energy for [emim][Tf2N] ions to dissolve in water. Our findings may significantly advance the DSE technology as a solution to the challenges in the global water-energy nexus.

Large Variations in the Composition of Ionic Liquid-Solvent Mixtures in Nanoscale Confinement.

Project description:Mixtures of an ionic liquid with an organic solvent are widely used as electrolytes in supercapacitors where they are often confined in porous electrodes with pore widths only slightly larger than the sizes of bare ions or solvent molecules. The composition of the electrolyte inside these pores, which may depend on the pore width and choice of electrolyte, can affect supercapacitor performance but remains poorly understood. Here, we perform all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of solutions of two different ionic liquids in acetonitrile under confinement between graphene sheets forming slit pores of various widths. We observe significant oscillations in the in-pore ionic liquid mole fraction with varying pore widths. Ions are excluded from very narrow pores, while for pore widths that tightly fit a single layer of ions, we observe an in-pore ionic liquid mole fraction over three times greater than that in the bulk. At slightly larger pore widths, we observe for different ionic liquids either a nearly complete exclusion of ions from the pore or a slight depletion of ions, while ion population again increases as pore width further increases. We develop an analytical model that can qualitatively predict the in-pore ionic liquid mole fraction based on the effective molar volumes and the pore wall interaction energies of each species. Our work suggests a new avenue for tuning the ionic liquid mole fraction in nanopores with potentially significant implications for designing systems involving nanoconfined liquid electrolytes such as supercapacitors where in-pore ion population can affect charging dynamics.

Solvent Effect in Imidazole-Based Poly(Ionic liquid) Membranes: Energy Storage and Sensing.

Project description:Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) are interesting new materials in sustainable technologies for energy storage and for gas sensor devices, and they provide high ion conductivity as solid polymer electrolytes in batteries. We introduce here the effect of polar protic (aqueous) and polar aprotic (propylene carbonate, PC) electrolytes, with the same concentration of lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (LiTFSI) on hydrophobic PIL films. Cyclic voltammetry, scanning ionic conductance microscopy and square wave voltammetry were performed, revealing that the PIL films had better electroactivity in the aqueous electrolyte and three times higher ion conductivity was obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Their energy storage capability was investigated with chronopotentiometric measurements, and it revealed 1.6 times higher specific capacitance in the aqueous electrolyte as well as novel sensor properties regarding the applied solvents. The PIL films were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, FTIR and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

High-performance cryo-temperature ionic thermoelectric liquid cell developed through a eutectic solvent strategy.

Project description:Ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) liquid cells offer an environmentally friendly, cost effective, and easy-operation route to low-grade heat recovery. However, the lowest temperature is limited by the freezing temperature of the aqueous electrolyte. Applying a eutectic solvent strategy, we fabricate a high-performance cryo-temperature i-TE liquid cell. Formamide is used as a chaotic organic solvent that destroys the hydrogen bond network between water molecules, forming a deep eutectic solvent that enables the cell to operate near cryo temperatures (down to -35 °C). After synergistic optimization of the electrode and cell structure, the as-fabricated liquid i-TE cell with cold (-35 °C) and hot (70 °C) ends achieve a high power density (17.5 W m-2) and a large two-hour energy density (27 kJ m-2). In a prototype 25-cell module, the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current are 6.9 V and 68 mA, respectively, and the maximum power is 131 mW. The anti-freezing ability and high output performance of the as-fabricated i-TE liquid cell system are requisites for applications in frigid regions.

Water in Protic Ionic Liquid Electrolytes: From Solvent Separated Ion Pairs to Water Clusters.

Project description:The large electrochemical and cycling stability of "water-in-salt" systems have rendered promising prospective electrolytes for batteries. The impact of addition of water on the properties of ionic liquids has already been addressed in several publications. In this contribution, we focus on the changes in the state of water. Therefore, we investigated the protic ionic liquid N-butyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide with varying water content at different temperatures with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations. It is revealed that at very low concentrations, the water is well dispersed and best characterized as shared solvent molecules. At higher concentrations, the water forms larger aggregates and is increasingly approaching a bulk-like state. While the librational and rotational dynamics of the water molecules become faster with increasing concentration, the translational dynamics are found to become slower. Further, all dynamics are found to be faster if the temperature increases. The trends of these findings are well in line with the experimental measured conductivities.
