Nanofluidic voidless electrode for electrochemical capacitance enhancement in gel electrolyte.

ABSTRACT: Porous electrodes with extraordinary capacitances in liquid electrolytes are oftentimes incompetent when gel electrolyte is applied because of the escalating ion diffusion limitations brought by the difficulties of infilling the pores of electrode with gels. As a result, porous electrodes usually exhibit lower capacitance in gel electrolytes than that in liquid electrolytes. Benefiting from the swift ion transport in intrinsic hydrated nanochannels, the electrochemical capacitance of the nanofluidic voidless electrode (5.56% porosity) is nearly equal in gel and liquid electrolytes with a difference of ~1.8%. In gel electrolyte, the areal capacitance reaches 8.94 F cm^-2 with a gravimetric capacitance of 178.8 F g^-1 and a volumetric capacitance of 321.8 F cm^-3. The findings are valuable to solid-state electrochemical energy storage technologies that require high-efficiency charge transport.

Facile Enhancement of Electrochemical Performance of Solid-State Supercapacitor via Atmospheric Plasma Treatment on PVA-Based Gel-Polymer Electrolyte.

Project description:A facile oxygen (O2) atmospheric plasma treatment is applied to a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to enhance its wettability and hydrophilicity. The optimal plasma treatment conditions are determined by varying the applied plasma power and plasma treatment time. A PVA matrix treated with a plasma power of 120 W for 5 s shows the most hydrophilicity owing to successful formation of carbonyl (-CO, >C=O) functional groups without any structural degradation. The plasma-treated PVA matrix is used as the gel-polymer electrolyte of a solid-state supercapacitor (SSC) by immersing solid matrix into various liquid electrolytes, such as sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and potassium hydroxide (KOH). Compared with the pristine PVA-based device, PVA-120W5/Na2SO4-, PVA-120W5/H2SO4-, and PVA-120W5/KOH-based SSCs show 2.03, 2.05, and 2.14 times higher specific capacitances, respectively. The plasma-treated PVA matrix shows increased specific capacitance owing to the increased wettability, which in turn increases the ion transportation and reduces the electrical resistance. This study successfully demonstrates that the electrochemical performance of a SSC can be readily enhanced through plasma treatment for a short time (≤5 s).

Enhanced Pseudocapacitive Performance of Symmetric Polypyrrole-MnO2 Electrode and Polymer Gel Electrolyte.

Project description:Herein, the nanostructured polypyrrole-coated MnO2 nanofibers growth on carbon cloth (PPy-MnO2-CC) to serve as the electrodes used in conjunction with a quasi-ionic liquid-based polymer gel electrolyte (urea-LiClO4-PVA) for solid-state symmetric supercapacitors (SSCs). The resultant PPy-MnO2-CC solid-state SSCs exhibited a high specific capacitance of 270 F/g at 1.0 A/g in a stable and wide potential window of 2.1 V with a high energy/power density (165.3 Wh/kg at 1.0 kW/kg and 21.0 kW/kg at 86.4 Wh/kg) along with great cycling stability (capacitance retention of 92.1% retention after 3000 cycles) and rate capability (141 F/g at 20 A/g), exceeding most of the previously reported SSCs. The outstanding performance of the studied 2.1 V PPy-MnO2-CC flexible SSCs could be attributed to the nanostructured PPy-coated MnO2 composite electrode and the urea-LiClO4-PVA polymer gel electrolyte design. In addition, the PPy-MnO2-CC solid-state SSCs could effectively retain their electrochemical performance at various bending angles, demonstrating their huge potential as power sources for flexible and lightweight electronic devices. This work offers an easy way to design and achieve light weight and high-performance SSCs with enhanced energy/power density.

Electrochemical Characterization of Single Layer Graphene/Electrolyte Interface: Effect of Solvent on the Interfacial Capacitance.

Project description:The development of the basic understanding of the charge storage mechanisms in electrodes for energy storage applications needs deep characterization of the electrode/electrolyte interface. In this work, we studied the charge of the double layer capacitance at single layer graphene (SLG) electrode used as a model material, in neat (EMIm-TFSI) and solvated (with acetonitrile) ionic liquid electrodes. The combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and gravimetric electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) measurements evidence that the presence of solvent drastically increases the charge carrier density at the SLG/ionic liquid interface. The capacitance is thus governed not only by the electronic properties of the graphene, but also by the specific organization of the electrolyte side at the SLG surface originating from the strong interactions existing between the EMIm+ cations and SLG surface. EQCM measurements also show that the carbon structure, with the presence of sp2 carbons, affects the charge storage mechanism by favoring counter-ion adsorption on SLG electrode versus ion exchange mechanism in amorphous porous carbons.

Supremely elastic gel polymer electrolyte enables a reliable electrode structure for silicon-based anodes.

Project description:Silicon-based materials are promising anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, owing to their high specific capacities. However, the huge volume expansion and shrinkage during cycling result in severe displacement of silicon particles and structural collapse of electrodes. Here we report the use of a supremely elastic gel polymer electrolyte to address this problem and realize long-term stable cycling of silicon monoxide anodes. The high elasticity of the gel polymer electrolyte is attributed to the use of a unique copolymer consisting of a soft ether domain and a hard cyclic ring domain. Consequently, the displacement of silicon monoxide particles and volume expansion of the electrode were effectively reduced, and the damage caused by electrode cracking is alleviated. A SiO|LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cell shows 70.0% capacity retention in 350 cycles with a commercial-level reversible capacity of 3.0 mAh cm-2 and an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.9%.

Dissecting the Solid Polymer Electrolyte-Electrode Interface in the Vicinity of Electrochemical Stability Limits.

Project description:Proper understanding of solid polymer electrolyte-electrode interfacial layer formation and its implications on cell performance is a vital step toward realizing practical solid-state lithium-ion batteries. At the same time, probing these solid-solid interfaces is extremely challenging as they are buried within the electrochemical system, thereby efficiently evading exposure to surface-sensitive spectroscopic methods. Still, the probing of interfacial degradation layers is essential to render an accurate picture of the behavior of these materials in the vicinity of their electrochemical stability limits and to complement the incomplete picture gained from electrochemical assessments. In this work, we address this issue in conjunction with presenting a thorough evaluation of the electrochemical stability window of the solid polymer electrolyte poly(ε-caprolactone):lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PCL:LiTFSI). According to staircase voltammetry, the electrochemical stability window of the polyester-based electrolyte was found to span from 1.5 to 4 V vs Li+/Li. Subsequent decomposition of PCL:LiTFSI outside of the stability window led to a buildup of carbonaceous, lithium oxide and salt-derived species at the electrode-electrolyte interface, identified using postmortem spectroscopic analysis. These species formed highly resistive interphase layers, acting as major bottlenecks in the SPE system. Resistance and thickness values of these layers at different potentials were then estimated based on the impedance response between a lithium iron phosphate reference electrode and carbon-coated working electrodes. Importantly, it is only through the combination of electrochemistry and photoelectron spectroscopy that the full extent of the electrochemical performance at the limits of electrochemical stability can be reliably and accurately determined.

A Poly(ionic liquid) Gel Electrolyte for Efficient all Solid Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitor.

Project description:Polyionic liquid based gels have stimulated significant interest due to their wide applications in flexible electronics, such as wearable electronics, roll-up displays, smart mobile devices and implantable biosensors. Novel supported liquid gel electrolyte using polymerisable ionic liquid and an acrylate monomer, has been developed in this work by entrapping ionic liquid during polymerisation instead of post polymerisation impregnation. The chemically crosslinked polyionic liquid gel electrolyte (PIL) is prepared using 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) monomer and a polymerisable ionic liquid, 1,4-di(vinylimidazolium)butane bisbromide (DVIMBr) in an ionic liquid (IL- 1-butyl-3 methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) as the polymerisation solvent, which resulted in in-situ entrapment of the IL in the gel during polymerisation and crosslinking of the polymer. The supported liquid gel electrolyte (SLG) material was characterised with thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis, and was found to be stable with good mechanical properties. The electrochemical analysis showed that these chemically cross-linked PIL gel electrolyte-supported ILs are suitable for solid-state, flexible supercapacitor applications.

Electrical, electrochemical and structural studies of a chlorine-derived ionic liquid-based polymer gel electrolyte.

Project description:In the present article, an ionic liquid-based polymer gel electrolyte was synthesized by using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) as a host polymer. The electrolyte films were synthesized by using the solution casting technique. The as-prepared films were free-standing and transparent with good dimensional stability. Optimized electrolyte films exhibit a maximum room-temperature ionic conductivity of σ = 8.9 × 10-3 S·cm-1. The temperature dependence of the prepared polymer gel electrolytes follows the thermally activated behavior of the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation. The total ionic transference number was ≈0.91 with a wider electrochemical potential window of 4.0 V for the prepared electrolyte film which contains 30 wt % of the ionic liquid. The optimized films have good potential to be used as electrolyte materials for energy storage applications.

Closo-Borate Gel Polymer Electrolyte with Remarkable Electrochemical Stability and a Wide Operating Temperature Window.

Project description:A major challenge in the pursuit of higher-energy-density lithium batteries for carbon-neutral-mobility is electrolyte compatibility with a lithium metal electrode. This study demonstrates the robust and stable nature of a closo-borate based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), which enables outstanding electrochemical stability and capacity retention upon extensive cycling. The GPE developed herein has an ionic conductivity of 7.3 × 10-4 S cm-2 at room temperature and stability over a wide temperature range from -35 to 80 °C with a high lithium transference number ( tLi+$t_{{\rm{Li}}}^ + $ = 0.51). Multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared are used to understand the solvation environment and interaction between the GPE components. Density functional theory calculations are leveraged to gain additional insight into the coordination environment and support spectroscopic interpretations. The GPE is also established to be a suitable electrolyte for extended cycling with four different active electrode materials when paired with a lithium metal electrode. The GPE can also be incorporated into a flexible battery that is capable of being cut and still functional. The incorporation of a closo-borate into a gel polymer matrix represents a new direction for enhancing the electrochemical and physical properties of this class of materials.

Effect of Zwitterionic Additive on Electrode Protection through Electrochemical Performances of Anatase TiO<sub>2</sub> Nanotube Array Electrode in Ionic Liquid Electrolyte.

Project description:In this work, a functionalized zwitterionic (ZI) compound 1-butylsulfonate-3-methylimidazole (C1C4imSO3) was synthesized and tested as an additive to LiTFSI/C2C2imTFSI ionic liquid-based electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. The structure and purity of C1C4imSO3 were confirmed by NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the pure C1C4imSO3 was examined by simultaneous thermogravimetric-mass spectrometric (TG-MS) measurements and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The LiTFSI/C2C2imTFSI/C1C4imSO3 system was tested as a potential electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries by using anatase TiO2 nanotube array electrode as the anode material. This electrolyte with 3% C1C4imSO3 showed significant improvement of lithium-ion intercalation/deintercalation properties, such as capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency compared to electrolyte without additive.

Nanostructured Thick Electrode Strategies toward Enhanced Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces.

Project description:This article addresses the issue of bulk electrode design and the factors limiting the performance of thick electrodes. Indeed, one of the challenges for achieving improved performance in electrochemical energy storage devices (batteries or supercapacitors) is the maximization of the ratio between active and non-active components while maintaining ionic and electronic conductivity of the assembly. In this study, we developed and compared supercapacitor thick electrodes using commercially available carbons and utilising conventional, easily scalable methods such as spray coating and freeze-casting. We also compared different binders and conductive carbons to develop thick electrodes and analysed factors that determine the performance of such thick electrodes, such as porosity and tortuosity. The spray-coated electrodes showed high areal capacitances of 1428 mF cm-2 at 0.3 mm thickness and 2459 F cm-2 at 0.6 mm thickness.
