Reactivity of [Pt(P ^t Bu₃)₂] with Zinc(I/II) Compounds: Bimetallic Adducts, Zn-Zn Bond Cleavage, and Cooperative Reactivity.

ABSTRACT: Metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) based on zinc electrophiles are particularly interesting due to their relevance to Negishi cross-coupling reactions. Zinc-based ligands in bimetallic complexes also render unique reactivity to the transition metals at which they are bound. Here we explore the use of sterically hindered [Pt(P ^t Bu₃)₂] (1) to access Pt/Zn bimetallic complexes. Compounds [(P ^t Bu₃)₂Pt → Zn(C₆F₅)₂] (2) and [Pt(ZnCp*)₆] (3) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) were isolated by reactions with Zn(C₆F₅)₂ and [Zn₂Cp*₂], respectively. We also disclose the cooperative reactivity of 1/ZnX₂ pairs (X = Cl, Br, I, and OTf) toward water and dihydrogen, which can be understood in terms of bimetallic frustration.

Project description:We report the selective formation of heterobimetallic PtII/CuI complexes that demonstrate how facile bond activation processes can be achieved by altering the reactivity of common organoplatinum compounds through their interaction with another metal center. The interaction of the Cu center with the Pt center and with a Pt-bound alkyl group increases the stability of PtMe2 towards undesired rollover cyclometalation. The presence of the CuI center also enables facile transmetalation from an electron-deficient tetraarylborate [B(ArF)4]- anion and mild C-H bond cleavage of a terminal alkyne, which was not observed in the absence of an electrophilic Cu center. The DFT study indicates that the Cu center acts as a binding site for the alkyne substrate, while activating its terminal C-H bond.

Reversible Hydride Migration from C5Me5 to RhI Revealed by a Cooperative Bimetallic Approach.

Project description:The use of cyclopentadienyl ligands in organometallic chemistry and catalysis is ubiquitous, mostly due to their robust spectator role. Nonetheless, increasing examples of non-innocent behaviour are being documented. Here, we provide evidence for reversible intramolecular C-H activation at one methyl terminus of C5Me5 in [(η-C5Me5)Rh(PMe3)2] to form a new Rh-H bond, a process so far restricted to early transition metals. Experimental evidence was acquired from bimetallic rhodium/gold structures in which the gold center binds either to the rhodium atom or to the activated Cp* ring. Reversibility of the C-H activation event regenerates the RhI and AuI monometallic precursors, whose cooperative reactivity towards polar E-H bonds (E=O, N), including the N-H bonds in ammonia, can be understood in terms of bimetallic frustration.

Promoting C-C Bond Coupling of Benzyne and Methyl Ligands in Electron-Deficient (triphos)Pt-CH3+ Complexes.

Project description:In situ generated benzyne reacts at room temperature with (triphos)Pt-CH3+ to form a five-coordinate π-complex (2) that is isolable and stable in solution. Thermolysis of 2 at 60 °C generates (triphos)Pt(o-tolyl)+ (3), which is the product of formal migratory insertion of CH3- onto the coordinated benzyne. The reaction of 2 with the acid Ph2NH2+ yields toluene at room temperature over the course of 8 h, while the same reaction with 3 only proceeds to 40% conversion over 2 days. These data indicate that the protonolysis of 2 does not proceed by CH3 migration onto benzyne to form 3 followed by protodemetalation. Instead, the data suggest either that protonation of 2 is first and is followed by H migration to yield a PtIVPh(Me) dication or that this latter species is generated by direct protonolysis of coordinated benzyne prior to reductive elimination of toluene.

Pyroelectric synthesis of Au/Pt bimetallic nanoparticles-BaTiO3 hybrid nanomaterials.

Project description:This paper introduces an approach to synthesize bimetallic nanoparticles under an alternating temperature field in aqueous solution. During the synthesis, pyro-catalytic barium titanate is used as the substrate to reduce the metallic ions dispersed in the solution due to the generated charges at the surface of pyro-materials under temperature oscillation. Chloroauric acid and potassium tetrachloroplatinate are used as precursors to produce gold/platinum bimetallic nanoparticles through a pyro-catalytic process. Transmission electron microscopy characterization, in combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping, demonstrates that the bimetallic nanoparticle is composed of an Au core and Au/Pt alloy shell structure. Compared to the conventional approaches, the pyroelectric synthesis approach demonstrated in this work requires no toxic reducing agents and waste heat can be used as a thermal energy source in the synthesis. Hence, it offers a potential "green" synthetic method for bimetallic nanoparticles.

Pt-O bond as an active site superior to Pt0 in hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:The oxidized platinum (Pt) can exhibit better electrocatalytic activity than metallic Pt0 in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which has aroused great interest in exploring the role of oxygen in Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we select two structurally well-defined polyoxometalates Na5[H3Pt(IV)W6O24] (PtW6O24) and Na3K5[Pt(II)2(W5O18)2] (Pt2(W5O18)2) as the platinum oxide model to investigate the HER performance. Electrocatalytic experiments show the mass activities of PtW6O24/C and Pt2(W5O18)2/C are 20.175 A mg-1 and 10.976 A mg-1 at 77 mV, respectively, which are better than that of commercial 20% Pt/C (0.398 A mg-1). The in situ synchrotron radiation experiments and DFT calculations suggest that the elongated Pt-O bond acts as the active site during the HER process, which can accelerate the coupling of proton and electron and the rapid release of H2. This work complements the knowledge boundary of Pt-based electrocatalytic HER, and suggests another way to update the state-of-the-art electrocatalyst.

Cationic Heterobimetallic Mg(Zn)/Al(Ga) Combinations for Cooperative C-F Bond Cleavage.

Project description:Low-valent (Me BDI)Al and (Me BDI)Ga and highly Lewis acidic cations in [(tBu BDI)M+ ⋅C6 H6 ][(B(C6 F5 )4 - ] (M=Mg or Zn, Me BDI=HC[C(Me)N-DIPP]2 , tBu BDI=HC[C(tBu)N-DIPP]2 , DIPP=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) react to heterobimetallic cations [(tBu BDI)Mg-Al(Me BDI)+ ], [(tBu BDI)Mg-Ga(Me BDI)+ ] and [(tBu BDI)Zn-Ga(Me BDI)+ ]. These cations feature long Mg-Al (or Ga) bonds while the Zn-Ga bond is short. The [(tBu BDI)Zn-Al(Me BDI)+ ] cation was not formed. Combined AIM and charge calculations suggest that the metal-metal bonds to Zn are considerably more covalent, whereas those to Mg should be described as weak AlI (or GaI )→Mg2+ donor bonds. Failure to isolate the Zn-Al combination originates from cleavage of the C-F bond in the solvent fluorobenzene to give (tBu BDI)ZnPh and (Me BDI)AlF+ which is extremely Lewis acidic and was not observed, but (Me BDI)Al(F)-(μ-F)-(F)Al(Me BDI)+ was verified by X-ray diffraction. DFT calculations show that the remarkably facile C-F bond cleavage follows a dearomatization/rearomatization route.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the isostructural title compounds, namely {2,6-bis-[(di-tert-butyl-phosphan-yl)-oxy]-4-hy-droxy-phen-yl}chlorido-palladium(II), [Pd(C22H39O3P2)Cl], 1, and {2,6-bis-[(di-tert-butyl-phosphan-yl)-oxy]-4-hy-droxy-phen-yl}chlorido-platinum(II), [Pt(C22H39O3P2)Cl], 2, the metal centres are coordinated in a distorted square-planar fashion by the POCOP pincer fragment and the chloride ligand. Both complexes form strong hydrogen-bonded chain structures through an inter-action of the OH group in the 4-position of the aromatic POCOP backbone with the halide ligand.

Tuning the Reactivity of Terminal Nickel(III)-Oxygen Adducts for C-H Bond Activation.

Project description:Two metastable NiIII complexes, [NiIII(OAc)(L)] and [NiIII(ONO2)(L)] (L = N,N'-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamidate, OAc = acetate), were prepared, adding to the previously prepared [NiIII(OCO2H)(L)], with the purpose of probing the properties of terminal late-transition metal oxidants. These high-valent oxidants were prepared by the one-electron oxidation of their NiII precursors ([NiII(OAc)(L)]- and [NiII(ONO2)(L)]-) with tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate. Fascinatingly, the reaction between any [NiII(X)(L)]- and NaOCl/acetic acid (AcOH) or cerium ammonium nitrate ((NH4)2[CeIV(NO3)6], CAN), yielded [NiIII(OAc)(L)] and [NiIII(ONO2)(L)], respectively. An array of spectroscopic characterizations (electronic absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption spectroscopies), electrochemical methods, and computational predictions (density functional theory) have been used to determine the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of these highly reactive metastable oxidants. The NiIII-oxidants proved competent in the oxidation of phenols (weak O-H bonds) and a series of hydrocarbon substrates (some with strong C-H bonds). Kinetic investigation of the reactions with di-tert-butylphenols showed a 15-fold enhanced reaction rate for [NiIII(ONO2)(L)] compared to [NiIII(OCO2H)(L)] and [NiIII(OAc)(L)], demonstrating the effect of electron-deficiency of the O-ligand on oxidizing power. The oxidation of a series of hydrocarbons by [NiIII(OAc)(L)] was further examined. A linear correlation between the rate constant and the bond dissociation energy of the C-H bonds in the substrates was indicative of a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism. The reaction rate with dihydroanthracene (k2 = 8.1 M-1 s-1) compared favorably with the most reactive high-valent metal-oxidants, and showcases the exceptional reactivity of late transition metal-oxygen adducts.

Solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties of chiral Pt(ii) complex and TCNQ˙- anion adducts.

Project description:A new pair of adducts comprising one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation, [Pt((-)-L1)(Dmpi)]+ ((-)-1) or [Pt((+)-L1)(Dmpi)]+ ((+)-1) [(-)-L1 = (-)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (+)-L1 = (+)-4,5-pinene-6'-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide], together with one TCNQ˙- anion have been obtained, and the structures have been confirmed via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The chiral Pt(ii) cation and TCNQ˙- anion are dissociated in MeOH solution, while charge transfer adducts are formed in H2O solution, leading to perturbation of the electronic structure and alteration of the chiral environment, as evidenced by the differences in the UV-vis absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra. The solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties also have been validated through emission and resonance light scattering spectra. The interesting findings may have potential applications in the development of black absorbers and wide band gap semiconductors.

Halogen Bond to Experimentally Significant N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (I, IMe2, IiPr2, ItBu2, IPh2, IMes2, IDipp2, IAd2; I = Imidazol-2-ylidene).

Project description:The subjects of the article are halogen bonds between either XCN or XCCH (X = Cl, Br, I) and the carbene carbon atom in imidazol-2-ylidene (I) or its derivatives (IR2) with experimentally significant and systematically increased R substituents at both nitrogen atoms: methyl = Me, iso-propyl = iPr, tert-butyl = tBu, phenyl = Ph, mesityl = Mes, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl = Dipp, 1-adamantyl = Ad. It is shown that the halogen bond strength increases in the order Cl < Br < I and the XCN molecule forms stronger complexes than XCCH. Of all the carbenes considered, IMes2 forms the strongest and also the shortest halogen bonds with an apogee for complex IMes2⋯ICN for which D0 = 18.71 kcal/mol and dC⋯I = 2.541 Å. In many cases, IDipp2 forms as strong halogen bonds as IMes2. Quite the opposite, although characterized by the greatest nucleophilicity, ItBu2 forms the weakest complexes (and the longest halogen bonds) if X ≠ Cl. While this finding can easily be attributed to the steric hindrance exerted by the highly branched tert-butyl groups, it appears that the presence of the four C-H⋯X hydrogen bonds may also be of importance here. Similar situation occurs in the case of complexes with IAd2.
