Project description:The perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the key component for hydrogen fuel cells (FCs). We used in situ synchrotron scattering to investigate the PEM morphology evolution and found a “stream-reservoir” morphology, which enables efficient proton transport. The short-side-chain (SSC) PFSA PEM is fabricated under the guidance of morphology optimization, which delivered a proton conductivity of 193 milliSiemens per centimeter [95% relativity humidity (RH)] and 40 milliSiemens per centimeter (40% RH) at 80°C. The improved glass transition temperature, water permeability, and mechanical strength enable high-temperature low-humidity FC applications. Performance improvement by 82.3% at 110°C and 25% RH is obtained for SSC-PFSA PEM FCs compared to Nafion polymer PEM devices. The insights in chain conformation, packing mechanism, crystallization, and phase separation of PFSAs build up the structure-property relationship. In addition, SSC-PFSA PEM is ideal for high-temperature low-humidity FCs that are needed urgently for high-power-density and heavy-duty applications. The SSC-PFSA PEM with hierarchical morphology is developed and successfully used in high-temperature low-humidity fuel cells.

Project description:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are promising clean energy conversion devices in residential, transportation, and portable applications. Currently, a high-pressure tank is the state-of-the-art mode of hydrogen storage; however, the energy cost, safety, and portability (or volumetric hydrogen storage capacity) presents a major barrier to the widespread dissemination of PEMFCs. Here we show an 'all-polymer type' rechargeable PEMFC (RCFC) that contains a hydrogen-storable polymer (HSP), which is a solid-state organic hydride, as the hydrogen storage media. Use of a gas impermeable SPP-QP (a polyphenylene-based PEM) enhances the operable time, reaching up to ca. 10.2 s mgHSP-1, which is more than a factor of two longer than that (3.90 s mgHSP-1) for a Nafion NRE-212 membrane cell. The RCFCs are cycleable, at least up to 50 cycles. The features of this RCFC system, including safety, ease of handling, and light weight, suggest applications in mobile, light-weight hydrogen-based energy devices.

Project description:The lack of efficient and durable proton exchange membrane fuel cell electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction is still restraining the present hydrogen technology. Graphene-based carbon materials have emerged as a potential solution to replace the existing carbon black (CB) supports; however, their potential was never fully exploited as a commercial solution because of their more demanding properties. Here, a unique and industrially scalable synthesis of platinum-based electrocatalysts on graphene derivative (GD) supports is presented. With an innovative approach, highly homogeneous as well as high metal loaded platinum-alloy (up to 60 wt %) intermetallic catalysts on GDs are achieved. Accelerated degradation tests show enhanced durability when compared to the CB-supported analogues including the commercial benchmark. Additionally, in combination with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy Auger characterization and Raman spectroscopy, a clear connection between the sp 2 content and structural defects in carbon materials with the catalyst durability is observed. Advanced gas diffusion electrode results show that the GD-supported catalysts exhibit excellent mass activities and possess the properties necessary to reach high currents if utilized correctly. We show record-high peak power densities in comparison to the prior best literature on platinum-based GD-supported materials which is promising information for future application.

Project description:Polymer composite membrane technology is promising for enhancing the performance of membrane electrode assemblies for high-temperature fuel cells. In this study, we developed a novel anhydrous proton-exchange polybenzimidazole (m-PBI) composite membrane using Al-substituted mesoporous silica (Al-MCM-41) as a proton-carrier support. The surface-substituted Al-MCM-41 formed effective proton-transport pathways via its periodic hexagonal channel and improved the proton conductivity. The proton conductivity of an m-PBI filled with 9 wt.% filler was 0.356?S?cm-1 at 160?°C and 0% humidity, representing an increase of 342% compared to that of a pristine m-PBI. Further, the current density at 0.6?V and maximum power density of m-PBI composite membranes were increased to 0.393?A?cm-2 and 0.516?W?cm-2, respectively. The enhanced fuel-cell performance was attributed to the proton-transfer channels and H3PO4 reservoirs formed by the mesopores of the Al-MCM-41 shell. The results indicated that Al-MCM-41 is suitable with respect to the hybrid homologues for enhancing the proton transport of the m-PBI membrane.

Project description:PtNi alloy and hybrid structures have shown impressive catalytic activities toward the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, such promise does not often translate into improved electrode performances in PEMFC devices. In this contribution, a Ni impregnation and subsequent annealing method, translatable to vertically aligned nanowire gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs), is shown in thin-film rotating disk electrode measurements (TFRDE) to enhance the ORR mass activity of Pt nanowires (NWs) supported on carbon (Pt NWs/C) by around 1.78 times. Physical characterisation results indicate that this improvement can be attributed to a combination of Ni alloying of the nanowires with retention of the morphology, while demonstrating that Ni can also help improve the thermal stability of Pt NWs. These catalysts are then tested in single PEMFCs. Lower power performances are achieved for PtNi NWs/C than Pt NWs/C. A further investigation confirms the different surface behaviour between Pt NWs and PtNi NWs when in contact with electrolyte ionomer in the electrodes in PEMFC operation. Indications are that this interaction exacerbates reactant mass transport limitations not seen with TFRDE measurements.

Project description:The porosity and utilization of platinum catalysts have a direct impact on their performance within proton exchange membrane fuel cells. It is desirable to identify methods that can prepare these catalysts with the desired features, and that can be widely implemented using existing and industrially scalable techniques. Through the use of electrodeposition processes, fuel cell testing, and electron microscopy analyses before and after fuel cell testing, we report the preparation and performance of mesoporous platinum catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. We found that these mesoporous platinum catalysts can be prepared in sufficient quantities through techniques that also enable their direct incorporation into membrane electrode assemblies. We also determined that the mesoporous catalysts achieved a high porosity, which was retained after assembly and utilization within fuel cells. In addition, these mesoporous platinum catalysts exhibited an improved platinum mass specific power over catalysts prepared from commercially available platinum nanocatalysts.

Project description:Metal alloy catalysts (e.g., Pt-Co) are widely used in fuel cells for improving the oxygen reduction reaction kinetics. Despite the promise, the leaching of the alloying element contaminates the ionomer/membrane, leading to poor durability. However, the underlying mechanisms by which cation contamination affects fuel cell performance remain poorly understood. Here, we provide a comprehensive understanding of cation contamination effects through the controlled doping of electrodes. We couple electrochemical testing results with membrane conductivity/water uptake measurements and impedance modeling to pinpoint where and how the losses in performance occur. We identify that (1) ∼44% of Co2+ exchange of the ionomer can be tolerated in the electrode, (2) loss in performance is predominantly induced by O2 and proton transport losses, and (3) Co2+ preferentially resides in the electrode under wet operating conditions. Our results provide a first-of-its-kind mechanistic explanation for cation effects and inform strategies for mitigating these undesired effects when using alloy catalysts.

Project description:Sodium pectate derivatives with 25% replacement of sodium ions with nickel ions were obtained by carbonization to temperatures of 280, 550, and 800 °C, under special protocols in an inert atmosphere by carbonization to temperatures of 280, 550, and 800 °C. The 25% substitution is the upper limit of substitution of sodium for nickel ions, above which the complexes are no longer soluble in water. It was established that the sample carburized to 550 °C is the most effective active element in the hydrogen-oxidation reaction, while the sample carbonized up to 800 °C was the most effective in the oxygen-reduction reaction. The poor performance of the catalytic system involving the pectin coordination biopolymer carbonized up to 280 °C was due to loss of proton conductivity caused by water removal and mainly by two-electron transfer in one catalytic cycle of the oxygen-reduction reaction. The improved performance of the system with coordination biopolymer carbonized up to 550 °C was due to the better access of gases to the catalytic sites and four-electron transfer in one catalytic cycle. The (Ni-NaPG)800C sample contains metallic nickel nanoparticles and loose carbon, which enhances the electrical conductivity and gas capacity of the catalytic system. In addition, almost four-electron transfer is observed in one catalytic cycle of the oxygen-reduction reaction.

Project description:The platinum electrocatalysts found in proton exchange membrane fuel cells are poisoned both reversibly and irreversibly by air pollutants and residual manufacturing contaminants. In this work, the poisoning of a Pt/C PEMFC cathode was probed by a trace of chlorobenzene in the air feed. Chlorobenzene inhibits the oxygen reduction reaction and causes significant cell performance loss. The performance loss is largely restored by neat air operation and potential cycling between 0.08 V and 1.2 V under H2/N2 (anode/cathode). The analysis of emissions, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectra show the chlorobenzene adsorption/reaction and molecular orientation on Pt surface depend on the electrode potential. At low potentials, chlorobenzene deposits either on top of adsorbed H atoms or on the Pt surface via the benzene ring and is converted to benzene (ca. 0.1 V) or cyclohexane (ca. 0 V) upon Cl removal. At potentials higher than 0.2 V, chlorobenzene binds to Pt via the Cl atom and can be converted to benzene (less than 0.3 V) or desorbed. Cl- is created and remains in the membrane electrode assembly. Cl- binds to the Pt surface much stronger than chlorobenzene, but can slowly be flushed out by liquid water.

Project description:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells have been recently developed at an increasing pace as clean energy conversion devices for stationary and transport sector applications. High platinum cathode loadings contribute significantly to costs. This is why improved catalyst and support materials as well as catalyst layer design are critically needed. Recent advances in nanotechnologies and material sciences have led to the discoveries of several highly promising families of materials. These include platinum-based alloys with shape-selected nanostructures, platinum-group-metal-free catalysts such as metal-nitrogen-doped carbon materials and modification of the carbon support to control surface properties and ionomer/catalyst interactions. Furthermore, the development of advanced characterization techniques allows a deeper understanding of the catalyst evolution under different conditions. This review focuses on all these recent developments and it closes with a discussion of future research directions in the field.
