Project description:A boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) featuring triphenylamine triad, BD, has been synthesized as a co-sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The optical and electrochemical properties of BD have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. DSCs containing co-sensitizers, N719 and BD, have been prepared in two procedures using co-deposition and stepwise deposition. The influences of the staining processes, co-deposition and stepwise deposition on dye loading, dye dispersion on a TiO2 photoanode and DSC performance have been investigated using FTIR, SEM-EDS, I-V test and IPCE measurement, respectively. We found that stepwise co-sensitization provided higher solar cell efficiency, compared to those stained with a co-deposition method. N719/5% BD showed the highest power conversion efficiency of 5.14%. Interestingly, the enhanced device efficiency was 66% higher than that of a device containing the single N719 dye.

Project description:We introduce herein boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes as a new class of fluorophores for the design of reporter dyes for supramolecular host-guest complex formation with cucurbit[7]uril (CB7). The BODIPYs contain a protonatable aniline nitrogen in the meso-position of the BODIPY chromophore, which was functionalized with known binding motifs for CB7. The unprotonated dyes show low fluorescence due to photoinduced electron transfer (PET), whereas the protonated dyes are highly fluorescent. Encapsulation of the binding motif inside CB7 positions the aniline nitrogen at the carbonyl rim of CB7, which affects the pKa value, and leads to a host-induced protonation and thus to a fluorescence increase. The possibility to tune binding affinities and pKa values is demonstrated and it is shown that, in combination with the beneficial photophysical properties of BODIPYs, several new applications of host-dye reporter pairs can be implemented. This includes indicator displacement assays with favourable absorption and emission wavelengths in the visible spectral region, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and noncovalent surface functionalization with fluorophores.

Project description:Herein we report on a straightforward access method for boron dipyrromethene dyes (BODIPYs)-coumarin hybrids linked through their respective 8- and 6- positions, with wide functionalization of the coumarin fragment, using salicylaldehyde as a versatile building block. The computationally-assisted photophysical study unveils broadband absorption upon proper functionalization of the coumarin, as well as the key role of the conformational freedom of the coumarin appended at the meso position of the BODIPY. Such free motion almost suppresses the fluorescence signal, but enables us to apply these dyads as molecular rotors to monitor the surrounding microviscosity.

Project description:Three novel organic dyes (D6, D7 and D8), based on indolo[3,2-b]carbazole as the donor and different types of electron-withdrawing groups as the acceptors, were synthesized and successfully applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Their molecular structures were fully characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectroscopy. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, UV-Vis absorption characterization and tests of the solar cells were used to investigate the photophysical/electrochemical properties as well as DSSCs' performances based on the dyes. Dye D8 showed the broadest light-response range (300-770 nm) in the incident monochromatic photo-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) curve, due to its narrow bandgap (1.95 eV). However, dye D6 exhibited the best device performance among the three dyes, with power conversion efficiency of 5.41%, Jsc of 12.55 mA cm-2, Voc of 745 mV and fill factor (FF) of 0.59. We also found that dye aggregation was efficiently suppressed by the introduction of alkylated indolo[3,2-b]carbazole, and, hence, better power conversion efficiencies were observed for all the three dyes, compared to the devices of co-sensitization with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA). It was unnecessary to add adsorbents to suppress the dye aggregation.

Project description:Over the last decade, molecules capable of emitting circularly polarized light have attracted growing attention for potential technological and biological applications. The efficiency of such devices depend on multiple parameters, in particular the magnitude and wavelength of the peak of emitted light, and also on the dissymmetry factor for chiral applications. In light of these considerations, molecular systems with tunable optical properties, preferably in the visible spectral region, are particularly appealing. This is the case of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, which exhibit large molecular absorption coefficients, have high fluorescence yields, are very stable, both thermally and photochemically, and can be easily functionalized. The latter property has been extensively exploited in the literature to produce chromophores with a wide range of optical properties. Nevertheless, only a few chiral BODIPYs have been synthetized and investigated so far. Using a recently reported axially chiral BODIPY derivative where an axially chiral BINOL unit has been attached to the chromophore unit, we present a comprehensive computational protocol to predict and interpret the one-photon absorption and emission spectra, together with their chiroptical counterparts. From the physico-chemical properties of this molecule, it will be possible to understand the origin of the circularly polarized luminescence better, thus helping to fine-tune the properties of interest. The sensitivity of such processes require accurate results, which can be achieved through a proper account of the vibrational structure in optical spectra. Methodologies to compute vibrationally-resolved electronic spectra can now be applied on relatively large chromophores, such as BODIPYs, but require more extensive computational protocols. For this reason, particular attention is paid in the description of the different steps of the protocol, and the potential pitfalls. Finally, we show how, by means of appropriate tools and approaches, data from intermediate steps of the simulation of the final spectra can be used to obtain further insights into the properties of the molecular system under investigation and the origin of the visible bands.

Project description:With the aim to further improve the light-absorption efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs), we have designed a series of novel pyrrolopyrrole boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives by replacing the sulfur atom and introducing different fused aromatic heterocycle end-caps. The optical, electronic, and charge transporting properties of the designed molecules have been systematically investigated by applying density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methodologies. The calculated the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) energies and spectral properties showed that the designed molecules exhibit narrower band gaps and strong absorption in the red/near-infrared (NIR) region, which led to the higher light-absorbing efficiency. Furthermore, the calculated reorganization energies show that the designed molecules are expected to be promising candidates for hole and/or electron transport materials. The results reveal that the designed molecules can serve as high-efficiency red/NIR-active donor materials as well as hole and/or electron transport materials in OSC applications.

Project description:The photophysical properties of near-infrared (NIR) emissive aza-boron-dipyrromethene (aza-BDP) dyes incorporating nitrofluorene and alkoxy decorations were intensively investigated. Their highly reversible one-electron reduction process showed characteristic electrofluorochromic (EF) properties in the NIR range, depending on the substituents. The nitrofluorene ethynyl-substituted (Type I) dyes showed smaller EF effects than the alkoxy-containing (Type II) dyes because of the difference in their intrinsic fluorescence contrast between the neutral and reduced states (radical anion). In addition, the Type II chromophores showed a larger diffusion coefficient for ion transport, which enhanced the EF contrast and the response time for the fluorescence change at a given step potential. With an optimized condition, the NIR EF ON/OFF ratio reached a value of 6.1 and a long cyclability over 1000 EF cycles between -0.4?V and +0.4?V switching potentials, with approximately 20% loss of the initial ON/OFF switching ratio. The NIR EF switching was visually observed through a visible light cut-off filter, featuring high fluorescence contrast.

The absorption energies can be tuned to absorb visible light over a large span of wavelengths by changing the nature of the 5-substituent. Optical properties of the hydrazones formed with these molecules are affected by the nature of the electrophile such that aliphatic and aromatic hydrazones can be differentiated from each other and from unreacted fluorophore.

Project description:Splitting one high-energy photon into two lower energy photons through downconversion has been demonstrated for a variety of combinations of rare earth (RE) ions. However, the low absorption cross section of RE3+ 4f-4f transitions hampers practical application. Therefore, enhancing the absorption by sensitization is crucial. We demonstrate efficient dye-sensitized downconversion using a strong blue/UV absorbing Coumarin dye to sensitize downconversion of the Pr3+-Yb3+ couple in NaYF4 nanocrystals (NCs). Luminescence spectra and lifetime measurements reveal Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) from Coumarin to Pr3+ in NaYF4:Pr3+Yb3+ NCs, followed by downconversion, resulting in Yb3+ IR emission with ∼30 times enhancement. The present study demonstrates the feasibility of dye-sensitized downconversion as a promising strategy to engineer strongly absorbing downconversion NCs to enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic cells.

Project description:The growing energy demand speed up the designing of competent photovoltaic materials. Herein, five zinc phthalocyanine-based donor materials T1-T5 are designed by substituting various groups (isopropoxy, cyano, fluoro, methoxycarbonyl, and dicyanomethyl) around zinc phthalocyanine. B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) level density functional theory (DFT) was used to investigate the optoelectronic properties of five zinc phthalocyanine-based dyes T1-T5 for dye-sensitized solar cells. The designed molecule T1 shows maximum absorption wavelength (λ max) in the absorption spectrum at 708.89 and 751.88 nm both in gaseous state and in THF (tetrahydrofuran) solvent. The E g value of T1 (1.86 eV) is less than reference R, indicating a greater charge transfer rate for T1 among the molecules. The values of open-circuit voltages achieved with acceptor polymer PC71BM are higher than R except for T1 and are 0.69 V, 1.95 V, 1.20 V, 1.44 V, and 1.84 V for T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5, respectively. The lower the reorganization energy, the higher the charge transfer for T1 due to its lower hole mobility (0.06297 eV) than R. Thus, the designed T1-T5 molecules are expected to exhibit superior performance in dye-sensitized solar cells.
