Project description:A single hybrid energy conversion and storage (HECS) cell of alpha-cobalt hydroxide (α-Co(OH)2) in ionic liquid was fabricated and operated under light illumination. The α-Co(OH)2, which is unstable in an aqueous electrolyte (i.e. KOH), is surprisingly stable in 1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium dicyanamide ionic liquid. The as-fabricated HECS cell provides 100% coulombic efficiency and 99.99% capacity retention over 2000 cycles. Under a photo-charging condition, the dicyanamide anion of ionic liquid can react with a generated α-Co(OH)2+ hole at the positive electrode since the HOMO energy level of the anion is close to the valence band of α-Co(OH)2. The excited photoelectron will transfer to the current collector and move to the negative electrode. At the negative electrode, the 1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium cations of ionic liquid do electrostatically adsorb on the surface and intercalate into the interlayer of active material stabilizing the whole cell. The HECS cell having both energy conversion (photovoltaic effect) and energy storage (supercapacitor) properties may be an ideal device for future renewable energy.

Project description:Mechanical forces affect a myriad of processes, from bone growth to material fracture to touch-responsive robotics. While nano- to micro-Newton forces are prevalent at the microscopic scale, few methods have the nanoscopic size and signal stability to measure them in vivo or in situ. Here, we develop an optical force-sensing platform based on sub-25 nm NaYF4 nanoparticles (NPs) doped with Yb3+, Er3+, and Mn2+. The lanthanides Yb3+ and Er3+ enable both photoluminescence and upconversion, while the energetically coupled d-metal Mn2+ adds force tunability through its crystal field sensitivity. Using a diamond anvil cell to exert up to 3.5 GPa pressure or ∼10 μN force per particle, we track stress-induced spectral responses. The red (660 nm) to green (520, 540 nm) emission ratio varies linearly with pressure, yielding an observed color change from orange to red for α-NaYF4 and from yellow-green to green for d-metal optimized β-NaYF4 when illuminated in the near infrared. Consistent readouts are recorded over multiple pressure cycles and hours of illumination. With the nanoscopic size, a dynamic range of 100 nN to 10 μN, and photostability, these nanoparticles lay the foundation for visualizing dynamic mechanical processes, such as stress propagation in materials and force signaling in organisms.

Project description:The detailed understanding and control of ionic transport pathways in the electrode/electrolyte interface is vital for realizing micro-scale energy storage devices and formulating adequate design principles. A planar device geometry with nanostructured thin solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) incorporated poly(N-vinyl imidazole) (PVI) is demonstrated for micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). The adsorption/desorption kinetics of ionic charges in the interfacial regime of ITO/PVI-KOH has been investigated for electrical double layer capacitance (EDLC) characteristics. A single-cell of ITO/PVI-KOH/ITO planar MSC shows the large variation in volumetric capacitance and capacitance retention characteristics when the thickness of PVI-KOH approaches the characteristic nanoscale. Moreover, ITO/PVI-KOH/ITO planar MSC consisting of five series-cells exhibits the maximum operating cell voltage of 5.0 V with maximum volumetric energy and power density of 0.056 mW h cm-3 and 6.89 mW cm-3, respectively. The electrochemical properties of planar MSC have been systematically studied so as to confirm how the anions and cations are separated at electrode/electrolyte interfaces by means of an electromotive force. Significantly, the hydrated PVI enables charge migration and separation of cations and anions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces.

Project description:PurposeIntraoperative detection and removal of microscopic residual disease (MRD) remain critical to the outcome of cancer surgeries. Today's minimally invasive surgical procedures require miniaturization and surgical integration of highly sensitive imagers to seamlessly integrate into the modern clinical workflow. However, current intraoperative imagers remain cumbersome and still heavily dependent on large lenses and rigid filters, precluding further miniaturization and integration into surgical tools.ProceduresWe have successfully engineered a chip-scale intraoperative micro-imager array-without optical filters or lenses-integrated with lanthanide-based alloyed upconverting nanoparticles (aUCNPs) to achieve tissue imaging using a single micro-chip. This imaging platform is able to leverage the unique optical properties of aUCNPs (long luminescent lifetime, high-efficiency upconversion, no photobleaching) by utilizing a time-resolved imaging method to acquire images using a 36-by-80-pixel, 2.3 mm [Formula: see text] 4.8 mm silicon-based electronic imager micro-chip, that is, less than 100-µm thin. Each pixel incorporates a novel architecture enabling automated background measurement and cancellation. We have validated the performance, spatial resolution, and the background cancellation scheme of the imaging platform, using resolution test targets and mouse prostate tumor sample intratumorally injected with aUCNPs. To demonstrate the ability to image MRD, or tumor margins, we evaluated the imaging platform in visualizing a single-cell thin section of the injected prostate tumor sample.ResultsTested on USAF resolution targets, the imager is able to achieve a resolution of 71 µm. We have also demonstrated successful background cancellation, achieving a signal-to-background ratio of 8 when performing ex vivo imaging on aUCNP-injected prostate tumor sample, improved from originally 0.4. The performance of the imaging platform on single-cell layer sections was also evaluated and the sensor achieved a signal-to-background ratio of 4.3 in resolving cell clusters with sizes as low as 200 cells.ConclusionThe imaging system proposed here is a scalable chip-scale ultra-thin alternative for bulky conventional intraoperative imagers. Its novel pixel architecture and background correction scheme enable visualization of microscopic-scale residual disease while remaining completely free of lenses and filters, achieving an ultra-miniaturized form factor-critical for intraoperative settings.

Project description:The demand for energy storage supercapacitor devices has increased interest in completing all innovative technologies and renewable energy requirements. Here, we report a simple method of two polyoxomolybdate (H4[PVMo11O40] and H5[PV2Mo10O40]) doped polyindole (PIn) composites for electrochemical supercapacitors. The interactions between polyoxomolybdates and PIn were measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder XRD, and stability was measured by thermogravimetry. The field emission scanning microscopy (FESEM) was employed to investigate the morphology of the materials. The electrochemical measurements show that the PIn/PV2Mo10 electrode exhibits a higher capacitance of 198.09 F/g with an energy density of 10.19 Wh/kg and a power density of 198.54 W/kg at 0.2 A/g current density than the PIn/PVMo11 electrode. Both electrodes show a pseudocapacitance behavior due to the doping of redox-active polyoxomolybdates on the PIn surface and enhance the electrochemical properties. The electrodes' capacitive nature was measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which shows that the PIn/PVMo11 electrode has a resistive nature within the electrode-electrode interface. Moreover, the PIn/PV2Mo10 electrode offers remarkable cycle stability, retaining ∼84% of its capacitance after 10,000 cycles (∼83% for the PIn/PVMo11 electrode). The higher specific capacitance, faster charge/discharge rates, and higher cycle stability make them promising electrodes in supercapacitors.

Project description:The performance of electric double-layer capacitors and lithium-ion batteries deteriorates with increasing humidity. The desirable effect of bound water on the energy-storage properties of physically dry cellulose nanofiber (Na-ACF) supercapacitors with sodium (Na) carboxylate radicals was investigated using infrared and near-infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, alternating current impedance analyses, and first-principles calculations. The storage capacity decreased gradually upon heating to 423 K and reached zero upon exceeding 483 K, accompanied by increasing electrical resistance, forming a distorted semicircle in Nyquist diagram and drawing the phase angle to zero in Bode diagram. This is attributed to the water in the hydration gel bound to the Na+-ions that cross-link the cellulose chains, evaporating as the temperature increases, and finally becoming Na2O. The increased band-gap energy from the increase in bound water prevents leakage from the supercapacitor. In contrast to ordinary batteries, bound water is necessary for developing Na-ACF supercapacitors.

Project description:Thermophotovoltaic devices are energy-conversion systems generating an electric current from the thermal photons radiated by a hot body. While their efficiency is limited in far field by the Schockley-Queisser limit, in near field the heat flux transferred to a photovoltaic cell can be largely enhanced because of the contribution of evanescent photons, in particular for a source supporting a surface mode. Unfortunately, in the infrared where these systems operate, the mismatch between the surface-mode frequency and the semiconductor gap reduces drastically the potential of this technology. In this paper we propose a modified thermophotovoltaic device in which the cell is covered by a graphene sheet. By discussing the transmission coefficient and the spectral properties of the flux, we show that both the cell efficiency and the produced current can be enhanced, paving the way to promising developments for the production of electricity from waste heat.

Project description:Energy transfer (ET) is of fundamental importance in tuning the optical performance of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). However, the fine control and manipulation of the ETs particularly for deleterious cross-relaxation type ETs (CR-ETs) in lanthanide-doped UCNPs remains a formidable challenge to date. Herein, we demonstrate a rational design strategy to manipulate the deleterious CR-ETs in lanthanide-doped UCNPs, by fine-tuning the distances at an extremely large length scale (>20 nm) among multiple lanthanide dopants that are simultaneously embedded into one single nanoparticle with specially designed multilayer nanostructures. The successful inhibition of the CR-ETs leads to a significantly enhanced upconversion luminescence signal with an intensity ∼70 times higher than that of co-doped conventional UCNPs. This finding paves a new way for the better control of the ETs in lanthanide-doped nanoparticles, and offers the possibility of constructing a series of promising single-nanocrystal-based anti-counterfeiting barcodes with well-identified UC emission color and lifetime outputs.

Project description:Micro-supercapacitors are important on-chip micro-power sources for miniaturized electronic devices. Although the performance of micro-supercapacitors has been significantly advanced by fabricating nanostructured materials, developing thin-film manufacture technologies and device architectures, their power or energy densities remain far from those of electrolytic capacitors or lithium thin-film batteries. Here we demonstrate graphene-based in-plane interdigital micro-supercapacitors on arbitrary substrates. The resulting micro-supercapacitors deliver an area capacitance of 80.7??F?cm?² and a stack capacitance of 17.9?F?cm?³. Further, they show a power density of 495?W?cm?³ that is higher than electrolytic capacitors, and an energy density of 2.5?mWh?cm?³ that is comparable to lithium thin-film batteries, in association with superior cycling stability. Such microdevices allow for operations at ultrahigh rate up to 1,000?V?s?¹, three orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional supercapacitors. Micro-supercapacitors with an in-plane geometry have great promise for numerous miniaturized or flexible electronic applications.
