Project description:We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of Li+ ions solvated by up to 50 He atoms. The experiments show clear enhanced abundances associated with HenLi+ clusters where n = 2, 6, 8, and 14. We find that classical methods, e.g. basin-hopping (BH), give results that qualitatively agree with quantum mechanical methods such as path integral Monte Carlo, diffusion Monte Carlo and quantum free energy, regarding both energies and the solvation structures that are formed. The theory identifies particularly stable structures for n = 4, 6 and 8 which line up with some of the most abundant features in the experiments.

Project description:We report the structures of eight new dicyanometallate frameworks containing molecular extra-framework cations. These systems include a number of hybrid inorganic-organic analogues of conventional ceramics, such as Ruddlesden-Popper phases and perovskites. The structure types adopted are rationalized in the broader context of all known dicyanometallate framework structures. We show that the structural diversity of this family can be understood in terms of (i) the charge and coordination preferences of the particular metal cation acting as framework node, and (ii) the size, shape, and extent of incorporation of extra-framework cations. In this way, we suggest that dicyanometallates form a particularly attractive model family of extended frameworks in which to explore the interplay between molecular degrees of freedom, framework topology, and supramolecular interactions.

Project description:DNA condensation and charge inversion usually occur in solutions of multivalent counterions. In the present study, we show that the organic monovalent ions of tetraphenyl chloride arsenic (Ph₄As⁺) can induce DNA compaction and even invert its electrophoretic mobility by single molecular methods. The morphology of condensed DNA was directly observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in the presence of a low concentration of Ph₄As⁺ in DNA solution. The magnetic tweezers (MT) measurements showed that DNA compaction happens at very low Ph₄As⁺ concentration (≤1 μM), and the typical step-like structures could be found in the extension-time curves of tethering DNA. However, when the concentration of Ph₄As⁺ increased to 1 mM, the steps disappeared in the pulling curves and globular structures could be found in the corresponding AFM images. Electrophoretic mobility measurement showed that charge inversion of DNA induced by the monovalent ions happened at 1.6 mM Ph₄As⁺, which is consistent with the prediction based on the strong hydrophobicity of Ph₄As⁺. We infer that the hydrophobic effect is the main driving force of DNA charge inversion and compaction by the organic monovalent ion.

Project description:Several harmful or valuable ionic species present in seawater, brackish water, and wastewater are amphoteric, weak acids or weak bases, and, thus, their properties depend on local water pH. Effective removal of these species can be challenging for conventional membrane technologies, necessitating chemical dosing of the feedwater to adjust pH. A prominent example is boron, which is considered toxic in high concentrations and often requires additional membrane passes to remove during seawater desalination. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging membraneless technique for water treatment and desalination, based on electrosorption of salt ions into charging microporous electrodes. CDI cells show strong internally generated pH variations during operation, and, thus, CDI can potentially remove pH-dependent species without chemical dosing. However, development of this technique is inhibited by the complexities inherent to the coupling of pH dynamics and ion properties in a charging CDI cell. Here, we present a theoretical framework predicting the electrosorption of pH-dependent species in flow-through electrode CDI cells. We demonstrate that such a model enables insight into factors affecting species electrosorption and conclude that important design rules for such systems are highly counterintuitive. For example, we show both theoretically and experimentally that for boron removal, the anode should be placed upstream and the cathode downstream, an electrode order that runs counter to the accepted wisdom in the CDI field. Overall, we show that to achieve target separations relying on coupled, complex phenomena, such as in the removal of amphoteric species, a theoretical CDI model is essential.

Project description:A quantitative analysis of the precipitate effects of metal ions (Al3+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Zn2+) by bovine serum albumin (BSA) on two condensed tannins (CT) from sorghum and plum was presented in this study. The results showed that adding metal ions enhanced the precipitation of proteins by CT, depending on the type and concentration of the metal ions used in the reaction system. The presence of metal ions and precipitation results on the CT-protein complex showed that Al3+ and Fe2+ had a higher binding ability with CT and a weaker influence on the precipitation of the CT-protein complex than Cu2+ and Zn2+. However, when the initial reaction solution contained excessive amounts of BSA, the extra addition of metal ions had no significant effect on the amount of BSA precipitation. Reversely, adding Cu2+ or Zn2+ into the reaction solution increased the amount of precipitated BSA when the amount of CT was excessive. In addition, the amounts of CT from plum, rather than sorghum, generated more protein precipitate in the presence of Cu2+ or Zn2+, which may be due to the different binding modes between the metal ion and the CT-BSA complex. This study also proposed a model of the interaction between the metal ion and the CT-protein precipitate.

Project description:Monovalent ions are involved in growth, proliferation, differentiation of cells as well as in their death. This work concerns the ion homeostasis during senescence induction in human mesenchymal endometrium stem/stromal cells (hMESCs): hMESCs subjected to oxidative stress (sublethal pulse of H2O2) enter the premature senescence accompanied by persistent DNA damage, irreversible cell cycle arrest, increased expression of the cell cycle inhibitors (p53, p21) cell hypertrophy, enhanced β-galactosidase activity. Using flame photometry to estimate K+, Na+ content and Rb+ (K+) fluxes we found that during the senescence development in stress-induced hMESCs, Na+/K+pump-mediated K+ fluxes are enhanced due to the increased Na+ content in senescent cells, while ouabain-resistant K+ fluxes remain unchanged. Senescence progression is accompanied by a peculiar decrease in the K+ content in cells from 800-900 to 500-600 µmol/g. Since cardiac glycosides are offered as selective agents for eliminating senescent cells, we investigated the effect of ouabain on ion homeostasis and viability of hMESCs and found that in both proliferating and senescent hMESCs, ouabain (1 nM-1 µM) inhibited pump-mediated K+ transport (ID50 5 × 10-8 M), decreased cell K+/Na+ ratio to 0.1-0.2, however did not induce apoptosis. Comparison of the effect of ouabain on hMESCs with the literature data on the selective cytotoxic effect of cardiac glycosides on senescent or cancer cells suggests the ion pump blockade and intracellular K+ depletion should be synergized with target apoptotic signal to induce the cell death.

Project description:The secondary active Na-K-Cl cotransporter 1 (NKCC1) promotes electroneutral uptake of two chloride ions, one sodium ion and one potassium ion. NKCC1 regulates Cl- homeostasis, thus being implicated in transepithelial water transport and in neuronal excitability. Aberrant NKCC1 transport is linked to a variety of human diseases. The loop diuretic drugs bumetanide, furosemide, azosemide and ethacrynic acid target NKCC1, but are characterized by poor selectivity leading to severe side effects. Despite its therapeutic importance, the molecular details of the NKCC1 inhibition mechanism remain unclear. Using all-atom simulations, we predict a putative binding mode of these drugs to the zebrafish (z) and human (h) NKCC1 orthologs. Although differing in their specific interactions with NKCC1 and/or monovalent ions, all drugs can fit within the same cavity and engage in hydrophobic interactions with M304/M382 in z/hNKCC1, a proposed ion gating residue demonstrated to be key for bumetanide binding. Consistent with experimental evidence, all drugs take advantage of the K+/Na+ ions, which plastically respond to their binding. This study not only provides atomic-level insights useful for drug discovery campaigns of more selective/potent NKCC1 inhibitors aimed to tackle diseases related to deregulated Cl- homeostasis, but it also supplies a paradigmatic example of the key importance of dynamical effects when drug binding is mediated by monovalent ions.

Project description:To reflect magmatic conditions, volcanic rocks must retain their compositions through eruption and post-eruptive cooling. Mostly, this is the case. However, welded ignimbrites from the Yellowstone-Snake River Plain magmatic province reveal systematic modification of the lithium (Li) inventory by post-eruptive processes. Here we show that phenocrysts from slowly cooled microcrystalline ignimbrite interiors consistently have significantly more Li than their rapidly quenched, glassy, counterparts. The strong association with host lithology and the invariance of other trace elements indicate that Li remains mobile long after eruption and readily passes into phenocrysts via diffusion as groundmass crystallisation increases the Li contents of the last remaining melts. Li isotopic measurements reveal that this diffusion during cooling combined with efficient degassing on the surface may significantly affect the Li inventory and isotopic compositions of volcanic rocks. Utilisation of Li for petrogenetic studies is therefore crucially dependent on the ability to 'see through' such post-eruptive processes.

Project description:Solid-state electrolytes overcome many challenges of present-day lithium ion batteries, such as safety hazards and dendrite formation1,2. However, detailed understanding of the involved lithium dynamics is missing due to a lack of in operando measurements with chemical and interfacial specificity. Here we investigate a prototypical solid-state electrolyte using linear and nonlinear extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopies. Leveraging the surface sensitivity of extreme-ultraviolet-second-harmonic-generation spectroscopy, we obtained a direct spectral signature of surface lithium ions, showing a distinct blueshift relative to bulk absorption spectra. First-principles simulations attributed the shift to transitions from the lithium 1 s state to hybridized Li-s/Ti-d orbitals at the surface. Our calculations further suggest a reduction in lithium interfacial mobility due to suppressed low-frequency rattling modes, which is the fundamental origin of the large interfacial resistance in this material. Our findings pave the way for new optimization strategies to develop these electrochemical devices via interfacial engineering of lithium ions.

Project description:The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is considered to be a potential next-generation power battery system, however, it is urgent that suitable materials are found in order to solve a series of challenges, such as the shuttle effect and lithium dendrite growth. As a multifunctional porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used in different parts of Li-S batteries. In recent years, the application of MOFs in Li-S batteries has been developed rapidly. This review summarizes the milestone works and recent advances of MOFs in various aspects of Li-S batteries, including cathode, separator and electrolyte. The factors affecting the performance of MOFs and the working mechanisms of MOFs in these different parts are also discussed in detail. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the application of MOFs in Li-S batteries are proposed. We also put forward feasible solutions to related problems. This review will provide better guidance for the rational design of novel MOF-based materials for Li-S batteries.
