Facing distress in Coronavirus era: The role of maladaptive personality traits and coping strategies.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the current study was to investigate the intersecting roles of dysfunctional personality traits and coping styles in relation to psychological distress during the Italian national lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants included 633 adults who completed questionnaires of maladaptive personality traits, coping styles, and psychological distress. Results indicated that all the maladaptive traits were associated with psychological distress with magnitude of associations strongest for Negative Affect and weakest for Antagonism. Maladaptive traits were also generally positively associated with avoidant/maladaptive and negatively associated with acceptance and positive reframing, forms of coping. A series of path analyses further demonstrated that coping strategies partially explained associations between maladaptive personality traits and psychological distress. All told, results suggest that during an unprecedented stressful time, associations between maladaptive personality traits and psychological distress may be, at least in part, explained by maladaptive coping strategies.

Project description:ObjectiveDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, people's behaviors have been considered an important factor in the spread of coronavirus. This situation led us to examine the role of personality in human behavior and its outcomes during the pandemic. This study examined the effect of normative, maladaptive, and dark personality traits on the probability of COVID-19 infection as mediated by psychological and behavioral responses to the pandemic.MethodsThe data was collected from 740 Iranians (mean age = 33.34) completing Big Five-10, Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF)-Adult, Short Dark Triad (SD3), Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale - 21 Items (DASS-21), and Protective Behaviors inventories. We used structural equation modeling to fit a model from the personality traits to COVID-19 infection through mediating effects of psychological and behavioral responses using cross-sectional data.ResultsAll path models examined fit the data well. The normative traits openness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, introversion, and disagreeableness were positively related to social distancing. The pathological traits antagonism, detachment, negative affectivity, disinhibition, and psychoticism, and dark traits psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism were negatively associated with social distancing. Finally, social distancing was negatively related to infection rates and fully mediated all personality links with infection (β = -0.17, p < 0.001).ConclusionThe findings demonstrate that individual differences in personality predict behaviors crucial to pandemic mitigation. Social distancing can be, directly or indirectly, a significant underlying mechanism linking personality traits to the COVID-19 infection. Public health policymakers should consider personality-tailored interventions for maximizing preventive health behaviors and slowing the spread of infection. This knowledge also could contribute to more effective measures to prepare for public health emergencies in the future.

Project description:The possibility of positive psychological changes after cancer, namely, posttraumatic growth, is a growing field of research. Identifying personality traits and coping strategies related to posttraumatic growth may help find vulnerable individuals as well as promote helpful coping strategies to help more patients make positive changes at an early stage. The aim of this systematic literature review is to provide an overview of the quantitative data on coping strategies and personality traits associated with posttraumatic growth in patients with cancer and cancer survivors as well as the methods used in included studies. A systematic literature search was conducted using five databases (PubMed, PubPsych, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and PSYNDEXplus). The 70 reports of included studies assessed posttraumatic growth using questionnaires in a sample of patients with cancer or survivors. In addition, associations with a personality trait or coping strategy had to be examined cross-sectionally or longitudinally. All 1698 articles were screened for titles and abstracts by two authors, after which disputed articles were reviewed by a third author. Afterwards, articles were screened for full texts. Most studies had a cross-sectional design and used a sample of patients with breast cancer. Coping strategies have been researched more than personality factors. The personality traits of resilience, hardiness, dispositional positive affectivity, and dispositional gratitude seem to be related to posttraumatic growth, while the Big Five personality traits (openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism) have been less researched and/or seem to be unrelated. The use of social support, religious coping, positive reframing, and reflection during illness as coping strategies seems to be related to posttraumatic growth. The findings can be used for the development of interventions. Future studies should investigate associations longitudinally.
