Vitisshizishanensis, a new species of the grape genus from Hubei province, China.

ABSTRACT: Vitisshizishanensis (Vitaceae), a new species from Hubei, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to V.flexuosa and V.bryoniifolia, but differs in leaf lobing and pubescence. It can be easily distinguished from the two species based on its glabrous or with very sparse arachnoid tomentum on the abaxial mature leaf surface, and its unlobed to 3-7 lobed leaves. A detailed description, along with photographs for the new species, and a table for morphological comparisons with similar Vitis species, are also provided.

Project description:Geum sunhangii - first discovered in Shennongjia National Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China - is described as a new species of Rosaceae. Compared to all known Chinese Geum species, the new species differs by possessing jointed styles, imbricate petals and a reniform radical leaf terminal leaflet. Most significantly, the jointed style is curved at an obtuse or a right angle. In addition, the inclusion of this species within the genus Geum was supported by phylogenetic analysis using the sequence data of a nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and a chloroplast trnL-trnF intergenic spacer. The new species was found to be closely related to G. rivale and G. aleppicum.

The adult and the male genitalia of the new species are illustrated and compared with those of its congeners, H. albinigra László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2001 and H. nanlingana Zhuang, Owada & Wang, 2014; an identification key based on the male genitalia is presented.

Hemipiliazhuxiensis (Orchideae, Orchidaceae), a new species from Hubei Province, China.

Project description:Hemipiliazhuxiensis (Orchidaceae), is a new species discovered in the Shibali Long Canyon National Nature Reserve, Zhuxi County, Hubei Province, China. It is morphologically similar to Hemipiliahenryi and Hemipiliacrassicalcarata, but differs in having an oblong, simple labellum with a slightly involute margin, an upcurved apex, and a spur shorter than the ovary. Molecular phylogenetic analyses, using nuclear (nrITS) and plastid (combined matK, psaB, psbA-trnH, rbcL and trnL-F) DNA sequences, confirm that H.zhuxiensis is closely related to Hemipiliahenryi and Hemipiliacrassicalcarata, supporting its recognition as a new species in the H.sectionHemipilia as defined by Tang et al. (2015).

Project description:Two new species, Sinoarinia feii Chen, gen. et sp. nov. and Pincerna vallis Chen & Wu, sp. nov., are described from western Hubei, China. The new genus Sinoarinia Chen & Wu, gen. nov. is established based on the strongly constricted penultimate whorl and the ascending last whorl. The Vietnamese species Pincerna costulosa (Bavay & Dautzenberg) is newly reported from Yunnan, China. For comparison, photographs of the shells of closely related species are provided. A key to the known species of Sinoarinia gen. nov. is included.

A new species of the genus Raorchestes (Anura: Rhacophoridae) from Yunnan Province, China.

Project description:A new bush frog species, Raorchestes cangyuanensis sp. nov., from Cangyuan, Yunnan Province, China, is described based on morphological and molecular analyses. It differs from all known congeners by a combination of the following characters: body size small, adult snout-vent length (SVL) 16.1-20.0 mm in males (n=3); tympanum indistinct; tips of all fingers and toes expanded into discs with circummarginal grooves; rudimentary webbing between toes; fingers and toes with lateral dermal fringes; inner and outer metacarpal tubercles present; heels meeting when limbs held at right angles to body; crotch with a distinct black patch; discs of fingers and toes orange; male with external single subgular vocal sac and reddish nuptial pad at the base of first finger.

Ehrlichia species in pond-farmed leeches (Hirudinaria sp.) in Hubei Province, China.

Project description:Leeches are frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, they are potentially hazardous to human and animal health by transmitting several pathogens. Studies of diseases transmitted by leeches are scarce. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pathogens carried in pond-farmed medicinal leech in China. Leeches were collected from 6 farms in Hubei Province in central China. DNA was extracted from the internal organ of leeches to analyze the origin of blood meal. Leech genera were confirmed through amplification of 18S rRNA and mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene by PCR and host animal species were identified through amplification of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Species of Ehrlichia in the leech specimens were screened with PCR using specific primers. PCR amplification and DNA sequencing showed that 620 leeches were Hirudinaria sp. Ehrlichia DNA was detected in 39 specimens from 2 farms. We obtained a total of 65 sequences of the cytB gene from 620 leech internal organ samples including sequences of human (n = 5), rat (n = 1), domestic pig (n = 10), duck (n = 23), goose (n = 12) and buffalo (n = 14). Phylogenetic analysis of the rrs and groEL gene sequences showed that Ehrlichia detected in the study were closely related to Ehrlichia sp. in ticks from Korea and Japan. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on Ehrlichia DNA being detected from leeches. Our findings provided new data on Ehrlichia spp. and farmed leech species in China.

Veronicastrum wulingense (Plantaginaceae), a new species from Southwestern Hubei, China.

Project description:BackgroundThe genus Veronicastrum Heist. ex Fabr. are mainly distributed in East Asia, and only Veronicastrum virginicum (L.) Farw. is disjunctively distributed in eastern North America. The south area of China (extending to Taiwan Island) is the richest in Veronicastrum species. It is of medicinal importance in China as traditional herbs used to treat ascites diseases that caused by schistosomiasis. During field investigation of plant resources in Pingbaying National Forest Park, Southwestern Hubei, China, an unknown flowering population of Veronicastrum was discovered from thick humus layers adjacent to rocks under broad-leaved forests by walkways. They were collected and morphological characters assesed for further taxonomic treatment. Molecular analysis was also conducted to ascertain its phylogenetic position in the genus Veronicastrum.ResultsThis species is similar to Veronicastrum liukiuense (Ohwi) T.Yamaz. from the Ryukyu Islands, but can be distinctly differed by its axillary inflorescences (versus terminal on short leafy branches), pedicels up to 2.5 mm (versus sessile), corollas purple to purple-red (versus white tinged with pale purple) and florescence June to July (versus September to October). Also, phylogenetic studies showed the species was an independent clade in the genus Veronicastrum based on the maximum likelihood (ML) analyses using two different matrix sequences of concatenated molecular markers. The plastid genome of this new species is also reported in this study for the first time.ConclusionThe morphological and molecular evidences support the recognition of Veronicastrum wulingense as a new species.
