Description of a new Hiroshia species (Lepidoptera, Thyatiridae) from Hubei Province, China.

ABSTRACT: A third species of Hiroshia László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2001, H. shennongjiaensis Ronkay, Ronkay & Han, sp. nov. is described from Hubei Province in China. The adult and the male genitalia of the new species are illustrated and compared with those of its congeners, H. albinigra László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2001 and H. nanlingana Zhuang, Owada & Wang, 2014; an identification key based on the male genitalia is presented.

Project description:Geum sunhangii - first discovered in Shennongjia National Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China - is described as a new species of Rosaceae. Compared to all known Chinese Geum species, the new species differs by possessing jointed styles, imbricate petals and a reniform radical leaf terminal leaflet. Most significantly, the jointed style is curved at an obtuse or a right angle. In addition, the inclusion of this species within the genus Geum was supported by phylogenetic analysis using the sequence data of a nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and a chloroplast trnL-trnF intergenic spacer. The new species was found to be closely related to G. rivale and G. aleppicum.

Description of two new species of Cossidae (Lepidoptera) from China.

Project description:Two new Cossidaespecies from China's Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces are described. The new species Phragmataecia monikasp. n.and Patoptoformis rimsaitesp. n. superficially resemble related congeners but can be distinguished by differences in wing pattern, genitalia and distribution. Checklists of the genera Phragmataecia and Patoptoformis are presented.

Vitisshizishanensis, a new species of the grape genus from Hubei province, China.

Project description:Vitisshizishanensis (Vitaceae), a new species from Hubei, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to V.flexuosa and V.bryoniifolia, but differs in leaf lobing and pubescence. It can be easily distinguished from the two species based on its glabrous or with very sparse arachnoid tomentum on the abaxial mature leaf surface, and its unlobed to 3-7 lobed leaves. A detailed description, along with photographs for the new species, and a table for morphological comparisons with similar Vitis species, are also provided.

The genus Ptilophora (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae) in China, with description of a new species.

Project description:The genus Ptilophora Stephens in China is briefly reviewed, with the description of Ptilophora nanlingensissp. n. The new species is most similar to Ptilophora horieaurea in wing pattern and to Ptilophora jezoensis in male genitalia, but they can be distinguished from each other by the following characters: forewing bright reddish brown in Ptilophora nanlingensis, chestnut brown in Ptilophora horieaurea; costa of male genitalia pointed, with a rounded subapical process ventrally in Ptilophora jezoensis, costa rounded, with apex inflated, and with pointed subapical process ventrally in Ptilophora nanlingensis. A key to the Ptilophora species from China and adjacent areas is presented and a distribution map is given. The holotype of the new species is deposited in the Department of Entomology, South China Agricultural University, P. R. China.

New discoveries of the family Epicopeiidae from China, with description of a new species (Lepidoptera, Epicopeiidae).

Project description:Some new discoveries of the family Epicopeiidae Swinhoe, 1892 from China are reported. A new species, Mimaporiaowadai Huang & Wang, sp. n. is described from W. Sichuan. Burmeia Minet, 2003 and Psychostrophiaendoi Inoue, 1992 are reported as new to China, with the female genitalia of the former described for the first time. The females of Psychostrophiaendoi Inoue, 1992 and Deuveiabanghaasi Hering, 1932 are reported for the first time. Adults and genitalia of all species aforementioned are illustrated.

Ehrlichia species in pond-farmed leeches (Hirudinaria sp.) in Hubei Province, China.

Project description:Leeches are frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, they are potentially hazardous to human and animal health by transmitting several pathogens. Studies of diseases transmitted by leeches are scarce. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pathogens carried in pond-farmed medicinal leech in China. Leeches were collected from 6 farms in Hubei Province in central China. DNA was extracted from the internal organ of leeches to analyze the origin of blood meal. Leech genera were confirmed through amplification of 18S rRNA and mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene by PCR and host animal species were identified through amplification of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Species of Ehrlichia in the leech specimens were screened with PCR using specific primers. PCR amplification and DNA sequencing showed that 620 leeches were Hirudinaria sp. Ehrlichia DNA was detected in 39 specimens from 2 farms. We obtained a total of 65 sequences of the cytB gene from 620 leech internal organ samples including sequences of human (n = 5), rat (n = 1), domestic pig (n = 10), duck (n = 23), goose (n = 12) and buffalo (n = 14). Phylogenetic analysis of the rrs and groEL gene sequences showed that Ehrlichia detected in the study were closely related to Ehrlichia sp. in ticks from Korea and Japan. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on Ehrlichia DNA being detected from leeches. Our findings provided new data on Ehrlichia spp. and farmed leech species in China.

Project description:The genus Biston Leach, 1815 is reviewed for China. Seventeen species are recognized, of which Biston mediolatasp. n. is described. Biston pustulata (Warren, 1896) and Biston panterinariaexanthemata (Moore, 1888) are newly recorded for China. The following new synonyms are established: Biston suppressaria suppressaria (Guenée, 1858) (= Biston suppressaria benescripta (Prout, 1915), syn. n. = Biston luculentus Inoue, 1992 syn. n.); Biston falcata (Warren, 1893) (= Amphidasiserilda Oberthür, 1910, syn. n. = Amphidasis clorinda Oberthür, 1910, syn. n. = Biston emarginaria Leech, 1897, syn. n.); Biston panterinaria panterinaria (Bremer & Grey, 1853) (= Biston panterinaria abraxata (Leech, 1889), syn. n. = Biston panterinaria lienpingensis (Wehrli, 1939), syn. n. = B. panterinaria szechuanensis (Wehrli, 1939), syn. n.). Biston falcata satura (Wehrli,1941), comb. n. is proposed. A key to Chinese Biston and diagnoses for Chinese species are provided. Illustrations of external features and genitalia are presented.

Project description:BackgroundThe family Lycaenidae is the second-largest group of butterflies which contains about one third of the known species of Papilionoidea. The genera Tajuria Moore, [1881] and Drupadia Moore, 1884 are both mainly found in the Oriental and Australian realms. In a very recent expedition to south-west China in Xishuangbanna (Yunnan Province), specimens of T. sekii Saito, 2005 and D. scaeva (Hewitson, 1869) were collected for the first time, a new subspecies of the former: T. sekii sisyphus ssp. nov., is described and illustrated and the latter species comprises the first record of the genus Drupadia in China.New informationA new subspecies of T. sekii Saito, 2005, T. sekii sisyphus ssp. nov., is described and illustrated. Nine species are recognized, of which Thubana felinaurita Li, sp. n. is described as new; Thubana dialeukos Park, 2003 and Thubana xanthoteles (Meyrick, 1923) are newly recorded for this country; Thubana stenosis (Park, 2003), syn. n. is synonymised with Thubana xanthoteles, and Thubana microcera (Gozmány, 1978), syn. n. with Thubana leucosphena Meyrick, 1931. Images of adults and genitalia are provided. A checklist of Thubana species in China is included, along with a key to these species.

Review of the genus Isodemis Diakonoff (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) from China, with description of three new species.

Project description:The genus Isodemis Diakonoff, 1952 in China is reviewed, with seven species recognized. Three new species are described: Isodemis quadratasp. n., Isodemis guangxiensissp. n. and Isodemis hainanensissp. n. The female of Isodemis stenotera Diakonoff, 1983 is described for the first time. Variation within Isodemis illiberalis (Meyrick, 1918) and Isodemis stenotera is briefly discussed. Images of the adults and genitalia are provided, along with a key to the described species.
