Project description:We present a novel setup that can be used for the in-line monitoring of solid-catalyzed gas-liquid reactions. The method combines the high sensitivity and resolution of a stripline NMR detector with a microfluidic network that can withstand elevated pressures. In our setup we dissolve hydrogen gas in the solvent, then flow it with the added substrate through a catalyst cartridge, and finally flow the reaction mixture directly through the stripline NMR detector. The method is quantitative and can be used to determine the solubility of hydrogen gas in liquids; it allows in-line monitoring of hydrogenation reactions and can be used to determine the reaction kinetics of these reactions. In this work, as proof of concept we demonstrate the optimization of the Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation reactions of styrene, phenylacetylene, cyclohexene, and hex-5-en-2-one in a microfluidic context.

Project description:Synthesis methods to prepare lower transition metal catalysts and specifically Ni for Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SHINERS) are explored. Impregnation, colloidal deposition, and spark ablation have been investigated as suitable synthesis routes to prepare SHINERS-active Ni/Au@SiO2 catalyst/Shell-Isolated Nanoparticles (SHINs). Ni precursors are confirmed to be notoriously difficult to reduce and the temperatures required are generally harsh enough to destroy SHINs, rendering SHINERS experiments on Ni infeasible using this approach. For colloidally synthesized Ni nanoparticles deposited on Au@SiO2 SHINs, stabilizing ligands first need to be removed before application is possible in catalysis. The required procedure results in transformation of the metallic Ni core to a fully oxidized metal nanoparticle, again too challenging to reduce at temperatures still compatible with SHINs. Finally, by use of spark ablation we were able to prepare metallic Ni catalysts directly on Au@SiO2 SHINs deposited on a Si wafer. These Ni/Au@SiO2 catalyst/SHINs were subsequently successfully probed with several molecules (i.?e. CO and acetylene) of interest for heterogeneous catalysis, and we show that they could be used to study the in?situ hydrogenation of acetylene. We observe the interaction of acetylene with the Ni surface. This study further illustrates the true potential of SHINERS by opening the door to studying industrially relevant reactions under in?situ or operando reaction conditions.

Project description:A new class of tunable heterophosphole dimeric ligands have been designed and synthesized. These ligands have enabled the first examples of Cu-catalyzed hydrogenation of 2-substituted-1-tetralones and related heteroaryl ketones via dynamic kinetic resolution, simultaneously creating two contiguous stereogenic centers with up to >99?:?1 dr and 98?:?2 er. The ligand-Cu complexes were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray, and DFT calculations revealed a novel heteroligated dimeric copper hydride transition state.

Project description:The cyclopentadienyl molybdenum hydride compounds, CpRMo(PMe3)3-x (CO) x H (CpR = Cp, Cp*; x = 0, 1, 2 or 3), are catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid, with the most active catalysts having the composition CpRMo(PMe3)2(CO)H. The mechanism of the catalytic cycle is proposed to involve (i) protonation of the molybdenum hydride complex, (ii) elimination of H2 and coordination of formate, and (iii) decarboxylation of the formate ligand to regenerate the hydride species. NMR spectroscopy indicates that the nature of the resting state depends on the composition of the catalyst. For example, (i) the resting states for the CpMo(CO)3H and CpMo(PMe3)(CO)2H systems are the hydride complexes themselves, (ii) the resting state for the CpMo(PMe3)3H system is the protonated species [CpMo(PMe3)3H2]+, and (iii) the resting state for the CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)H system is the formate complex, CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)(?1-O2CH), in the presence of a high concentration of formic acid, but CpMo(PMe3)2(CO)H when the concentration of acid is low. While CO2 and H2 are the principal products of the catalytic reaction induced by CpRMo(PMe3)3-x (CO) x H, methanol and methyl formate are also observed. The generation of methanol is a consequence of disproportionation of formic acid, while methyl formate is a product of subsequent esterification. The disproportionation of formic acid is a manifestation of a transfer hydrogenation reaction, which may also be applied to the reduction of aldehydes and ketones. Thus, CpMo(CO)3H also catalyzes the reduction of a variety of ketones and aldehydes to alcohols by formic acid, via a mechanism that involves ionic hydrogenation.

Project description:Selectivity control is one of the most important functions of a catalyst. In asymmetric catalysis the enantiomeric excess (e.e.) is a property of major interest, with a lot of effort dedicated to developing the most enantioselective catalyst, understanding the origin of selectivity, and predicting stereoselectivity. Herein, we investigate the relationship between predicted selectivity and the uncertainties in the computed energetics of the catalytic reaction mechanism obtained by DFT calculations in a case study of catalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of ketones with an Mn-diamine catalyst. Data obtained from our analysis of DFT data by microkinetic modeling is compared to results from experiment. We discuss the limitations of the conventional reductionist approach of e.e. estimation from assessing the enantiodetermining steps only. Our analysis shows that the energetics of other reaction steps in the reaction mechanism have a substantial impact on the predicted reaction selectivity. The uncertainty of DFT calculations within the commonly accepted energy ranges of chemical accuracy may reverse the predicted e.e. with the non-enantiodetermining steps contributing to e.e. deviations of up to 25 %.

Project description:MotivationOxidoreductases are a fundamental class of enzymes responsible for the catalysis of oxidation-reduction reactions, crucial in most bioenergetic metabolic pathways. From their common root in the ancient prebiotic environment, oxidoreductases have evolved into diverse and elaborate protein structures with specific kinetic properties and mechanisms adapted to their individual functional roles and environmental conditions. While accurate kinetic modeling of oxidoreductases is thus important, current models suffer from limitations to the steady-state domain, lack empirical validation or are too specialized to a single system or set of conditions.ResultsTo address these limitations, we introduce a novel unifying modeling framework for kinetic descriptions of oxidoreductases. The framework is based on a set of seven elementary reactions that (i) form the basis for 69 pairs of enzyme state transitions for encoding various specific microscopic intra-enzyme reaction networks (micro-models), and (ii) lead to various specific macroscopic steady-state kinetic equations (macro-models) via thermodynamic assumptions. Thus, a synergistic bridge between the micro and macro kinetics can be achieved, enabling us to extract unitary rate constants, simulate reaction variance and validate the micro-models using steady-state empirical data. Project description:Adsorbates on a surface experience lateral interactions that result in a distribution of adsorption energies. The adsorbate-adsorbate interactions are known to affect the kinetics of surface reactions, which motivates efforts to develop models that accurately account for the interactions. Here, we use density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with Monte Carlo simulations to investigate how the distribution of adsorbates affects adsorption and desorption of CO from Pt(111). We find that the mean of the average adsorption energy determines the adsorption process, whereas the desorption process can be described by the low energy part of the adsorbate stability distribution. The simulated results are in very good agreement with calorimetry and temperature-programmed desorption experiments and provide a guideline of how to include adsorbate-adsorbate interactions in DFT-based mean-field kinetic models.

Project description:There is tremendous interest in water-compatible lanthanide triflate-based catalysts for carbon-carbon bond forming reactions; however, poor understanding of their aqueous mechanism severely limits the ability to increase the utility of these catalysts. Here, we report dynamic measurements of the water-coordination number of lanthanide triflate-based catalysts using luminescence-decay measurements in a range of aqueous systems. This unique characterization method is a reliable, convenient, and fast approach to analyze lanthanide-based catalysts in aqueous systems.
