Project description:Cerium-rich metal oxide materials have recently emerged as promising candidates for the photocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this article, we report the synthesis of ordered mesoporous CuO/CeO₂ composite frameworks with different contents of copper(II) oxide and demonstrate their activity for photocatalytic O₂ production via UV-Vis light-driven oxidation of water. Mesoporous CuO/CeO₂ materials have been successfully prepared by a nanocasting route, using mesoporous silica as a rigid template. X-ray diffraction, electron transmission microscopy and N₂ porosimetry characterization of the as-prepared products reveal a mesoporous structure composed of parallel arranged nanorods, with a large surface area and a narrow pore size distribution. The molecular structure and optical properties of the composite materials were investigated with Raman and UV-Vis/NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Catalytic results indicated that incorporation of CuO clusters in the CeO₂ lattice improved the photochemical properties. As a result, the CuO/CeO₂ composite catalyst containing ~38 wt % CuO reaches a high O₂ evolution rate of ~19.6 µmol·h-1 (or 392 µmol·h-1·g-1) with an apparent quantum efficiency of 17.6% at λ = 365 ± 10 nm. This OER activity compares favorably with that obtained from the non-porous CuO/CeO₂ counterpart (~1.3 µmol·h-1) and pure mesoporous CeO₂ (~1 µmol·h-1).

Project description:In this work, a series of Cu2O/S (S = α-MnO2, CeO2, ZSM-5, and Fe2O3) supported catalysts with a Cu2O loading amount of 15% were prepared by the facile liquid-phase reduction deposition-precipitation strategy and investigated as CO oxidation catalysts. It was found that the Cu2O/α-MnO2 catalyst exhibits the best catalytic activity for CO oxidation. Additionally, a series of Cu2O-CuO/α-MnO2 heterojunctions with varied proportion of Cu+/Cu2+ were synthesized by further calcining the pristine Cu2O/α-MnO2 catalyst. The ratio of the Cu+/Cu2+ could be facilely regulated by controlling the calcination temperature. It is worth noting that the Cu2O-CuO/α-MnO2-260 catalyst displays the best catalytic performance. Moreover, the kinetic studies manifest that the apparent activation energy could be greatly reduced owing to the excellent redox property and the Cu2O-CuO interface effect. Therefore, the Cu2O-CuO heterojunction catalysts supported on α-MnO2 nanotubes are believed to be the potential catalyst candidates for CO oxidation with advanced performance.

Project description:The catalytic oxidation of CO molecule on a thermodynamically stable Cu4 cluster doped MoS2 monolayer is investigated by density functional theory (DFT) where the reaction proceeds in a new formation order of COOOCO* (O2* + 2CO* → COOOCO*), OCO* (COOOCO* → CO2 + OCO*), and CO2 (OCO* → CO2) desorption with the corresponding reaction barrier values of 0.220 eV, 0.370 eV and 0.119 eV, respectively. Therein, the rate-determining step is the second one. This low barrier indicates high activity of this system where CO oxidation could be realized at room temperature (even lower). As a result, the Cu4 doped MoS2 could be a candidate for CO oxidation with lower cost and higher activity without poisoning and corrosion problems.

Project description:Cu-containing hierarchical SAPO-34 catalysts were synthesized by the bottom-up method using different mesoporogen templates: CTAB encapsulated within ordered mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and sucrose. A high fraction of the Cu centers exchanged in the hierarchical SAPO-34 architecture with high mesopore surface area and volume was achieved when CTAB was embedded within ordered mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Physicochemical characterization was performed by using structural and spectroscopic techniques to elucidate the properties of hierarchical SAPO-34 before and after Cu introduction. The speciation of the Cu sites, investigated by DR UV-Vis, and the results of the catalytic tests indicated that the synergy between the textural properties of the hierarchical SAPO-34 framework, the high Cu loading, and the coordination and localization of the Cu sites in the hierarchical architecture is the key point to obtaining good preliminary results in the NO selective catalytic reduction with hydrocarbons (HC-SCR).

Project description:Composites of Laponite and Cu⁻Mn hopcalite-related mixed oxides, prepared from hydrotalcite-like (Htlc) precursors obtained in inverse microemulsions, were synthesized and characterized with XRF, XRD, SEM, TEM, H₂ temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and N₂ adsorption/desorption at -196 °C. The Htlc precursors were precipitated either with NaOH or tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH). Al was used as an element facilitating Htlc structure formation, and Ce and/or Zr were added as promoters. The composites calcined at 600 °C are mesoporous structures with similar textural characteristics. The copper⁻manganite spinel phases formed from the TBAOH-precipitated precursors are less crystalline and more susceptible to reduction than the counterparts obtained from the precursors synthesized with NaOH. The Cu⁻Mn-based composites are active in the combustion of toluene, and their performance improves further upon the addition of promoters in the following order: Ce < Zr < Zr + Ce. The composites whose active phases are prepared with TBAOH are more active than their counterparts obtained with the use of the precursors precipitated with NaOH, due to the better reducibility of the less crystalline mixed oxide active phase.

Project description:The synthesis of optoelectrically enhanced nanomaterials should be continuously improved by employing time- and energy-saving techniques. The porous zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper-doped ZnO nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized by the time- and energy-efficient solution combustion synthesis (SCS) approach. In this SCS approach, once the precursor-surfactant complex ignition point is reached, the reaction starts and ends within a short time without the need for any external energy. The TGA-DTA analysis confirmed that 500 °C was the point at which stable metal oxide was obtained. The doping and heterojunction strategy improved the optoelectric properties of the NCs more than the individual constituents, which then enhanced the materials' charge transfer and optical absorption capabilities. The porosity, nanoscale crystallite size (15-50 nm), and formation of Cu/CuO-ZnO NCs materials were confirmed from the XRD, SEM, and TEM/HRTEM analyses. The obtained d-spacing values of 0.275 and 0.234 nm confirm the formation of ZnO and CuO crystals, respectively. The decrease in photoluminescence intensity for the doped NCs corroborates a reduction in electron-hole recombination. On the Mott-Schottky analysis, the positive slope for ZnO confirms the n-type character, while the negative and positive slopes of the NCs confirm the p- and n-type characters, respectively. A diffusion-controlled type of charge transfer process on the electrode surface was confirmed from the cyclic voltammetric analysis. Thus, the overall analysis shows the applicability of the less expensive and more efficient SCS for several applications, such as catalysis and sensors. To confirm this, an organic catalytic reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol was tested. Within three and a half minutes, the catalytic reduction result showed the great potential of NCs over ZnO NPs. Thus, the energy- and time-saving SCS approach has a great future outlook as an industrial pollutant catalytic reduction application.

Project description:In this data in brief article dataset of plasma-assisted nitrogen doping of a binderless, spin-coated CuO-NiO mixed oxide thin film was presented (Palmer et al., 2020). A comparison of the CuO, N-CuO/Cu2O, CuO:NiO and N-CuO/Cu2O:NiO are presented. The as prepared films were used for the application of a glucose sensor. The nitrogen doped species, generated during plasma ignition, resulted in a beneficial phase transformation of CuO to Cu2O. Characterisation techniques such as XPS, particle size distribution and EIS techniques were utilized to study the morphology, structural features, doping profile and electrical properties of the various developed electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the thin film sensors was tested using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The CuO exhibited a sensitivity of 830 µA/mM cm2 up to 1.65 mM of glucose, N-CuO/Cu2O had a linear range up to 1.91 mM with a sensitivity of 873 µA/mM cm2 and the CuO:NiO electrode had a linear range up to 1.65 mM with a sensitivity of 1103 µA/mM.cm2 respectively. Project description:Development of metal-doped carbon dots (CDs) to effectively modulate their electronic properties and surface chemical reactivities is still in its early stage. In this paper, a facile solid-phase synthesis strategy was developed to synthesize Cu-doped CDs (Cu-CDs) using citric acid as the carbon source and Cu(NO3)2·3H2O as the dopant, respectively. The as-prepared Cu-CDs exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity to horseradish peroxidase and were stable under a wide range of pH and temperatures. Consequently, the Cu-CD-based chemiluminescence sensing was applied to sensitively detect glucose with a low detection limit of 0.32 μM, and the recoveries and the relative standard deviation of the serum sample are 87.2-112.2 and 8.16% (n = 6), respectively. Notably, the proposed chemiluminescence sensing was also successfully applied for label-free detection of glucose in complex biological samples, which envisioned its potential applications in clinical diagnosis and other analytical assays.

Project description:Incorporation of Mn into an established water oxidation catalyst based on a Co(III)4O4 cubane was achieved by a simple and efficient assembly of permanganate, cobalt(II) acetate, and pyridine to form the cubane oxo cluster MnCo3O4(OAc)5py3 (OAc = acetate, py = pyridine) (1-OAc) in good yield. This allows characterization of electronic and chemical properties for a manganese center in a cobalt oxide environment, and provides a molecular model for Mn-doped cobalt oxides. The electronic properties of the cubane are readily tuned by exchange of the OAc- ligand for Cl- (1-Cl), NO3- (1-NO3), and pyridine ([1-py]+). EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and DFT calculations thoroughly characterized the valence assignment of the cubane as [MnIVCoIII3]. These cubanes are redox-active, and calculations reveal that the Co ions behave as the reservoir for electrons, but their redox potentials are tuned by the choice of ligand at Mn. This MnCo3O4 cubane system represents a new class of easily prepared, versatile, and redox-active oxido clusters that should contribute to an understanding of mixed-metal, Mn-containing oxides.
