Certification of SRM 640f line position and line shape standard for powder diffraction.

ABSTRACT: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certifies a suite of Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) to be used to evaluate specific aspects of the instrument performance of both X-ray and neutron powder diffractometers. This report describes SRM 640f, the seventh generation of this powder diffraction SRM, which is designed to be used primarily for calibrating powder diffractometers with respect to line position; it also can be used for the determination of the instrument profile function. It is certified with respect to the lattice parameter and consists of approximately 7.5 g of silicon powder prepared to minimize line broadening. A NIST-built diffractometer, incorporating many advanced design features, was used to certify the lattice parameter of the Si powder. Both statistical and systematic uncertainties have been assigned to yield a certified value for the lattice parameter at 22.5 °C of a = 0.5431144 ± 0.000008 nm.

Project description:Dietary fatty acids can be both beneficial and detrimental to human health depending on the degree and type of saturation. Healthcare providers and research scientists monitor the fatty acid content of human plasma and serum as an indicator of health status and diet. In addition, both the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health - Office of Dietary Supplements are interested in circulating fatty acids (FAs) because they may be predictive of coronary heart disease. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provides a wide variety of reference materials (RMs) and Standard Reference Materials® (SRM®s) including blood, serum, plasma, and urine with values assigned for analytes of clinical interest. NIST SRM 2378 Fatty Acids in Frozen Human Serum was introduced in 2015 to help validate methods used for the analysis of FAs in serum, and consists of three different pools of serum acquired from (1) healthy donors who had taken fish oil dietary supplements (at least 1000 mg per day) for at least one month (level 1 material), (2) healthy donors who had taken flaxseed oil dietary supplements (at least 1000 mg per day) for at least one month (level 2 material), and (3) healthy donors eating "normal" diets who had not taken dietary supplements containing fish or plant oils (level 3 material). The use of dietary supplements by donors provided SRMs with natural endogenous ranges of FAs at concentrations observed in human populations. Results from analyses using two methods at NIST, including one involving a novel microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis procedure, and one at the CDC are presented here. These results and their respective uncertainties were combined to yield certified values with expanded uncertainties for 12 FAs and reference values with expanded uncertainties for an additional 18 FAs.

On the reliability of powder diffraction Line Profile Analysis of plastically deformed nanocrystalline systems.

Project description:An iron-molybdenum alloy powder was extensively deformed by high energy milling, so to refine the bcc iron domain size to nanometer scale (~10 nm) and introduce a strong inhomogeneous strain. Both features contribute to comparable degree to the diffraction peak profile broadening, so that size and strain contributions can be easily separated by exploiting their different dependence on the diffraction angle. To assess the reliability of Line Profile Analysis, results were compared with evidence from other techniques, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray small angle scattering. Results confirm the extent of the size broadening effect, whereas molecular dynamics simulations provide insight into the origin of the local atomic, inhomogeneous strain, pointing out the role of dislocations, domain boundaries and interactions among crystalline domains.

Project description:The title mol-ecule, C19H18N4O2 {systematic name: (RS)-6-[2-(4-meth-oxy-phen-yl)-1H-benzimidazol-5-yl]-5-methyl-4,5-di-hydro-pyridazin-3(2H)-one}, adopts an extended conformation. The dihedral angles between the central benzimidazole ring sytem and the pendant meth-oxy-phenyl and pyridazinone residues are 1.41?(18) and 9.7?(3)°, respectively. In the crystal, N-H?N hydrogen bonds link the imadazole groups into [001] chains, and pairs of N-H?O hydrogen bonds link the pyridazinone groups into dimers. Together, these generate a two-dimensional supra-molecular structure parallel to (010). The layers are linked by C-H?? inter-actions.

Alaptide from synchrotron powder diffraction data.

Project description:THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: (8S)-8-methyl-6,9-diaza-spiro-[4.5]decane-7,10-dione], C(9)H(14)N(2)O(2), consists of two connected rings, viz. a piperazine-2,5-dione (DKP) ring and a five-membered ring. The DKP ring adopts a slight boat conformation and the bonded methyl group is in an equatorial position. The five-membered ring is in an envelope conformation. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds link mol-ecules into chains running parallel to the c axis.

Neutron Larmor diffraction on powder samples.

Project description:A hitherto unrecognized resolution effect in neutron Larmor diffraction (LD) is reported, resulting from small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) in the sample. Small distortions of the neutron trajectories by SANS give rise to a blurring of the Bragg angles of the order of a few hundredths of a degree, leading to a degradation of the momentum resolution. This effect is negligible for single crystals but may be significant for polycrystalline or powder samples. A procedure is presented to correct the LD data for the parasitic SANS. The latter is accurately determined by the SESANS technique (spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering), which is readily available on Larmor diffractometers. The analysis technique is demonstrated on LD and SESANS data from α-Fe2O3 powder samples. The resulting d-spacing range agrees with experimental data from high-resolution synchrotron radiation powder diffraction on the same sample.

Trihexyphenidyl hydro-chloride: a powder diffraction study.

Project description:IN THE CATION OF THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 1-(3-cyclo-hexyl-3-hy-droxy-3-phenyl-prop-yl)piperidinium chloride], C(20)H(32)NO(+)·Cl(-), the cyclo-hexyl and piperidine rings are in chair conformations. In the crystal structure, cations and anions are linked into chains along the c-axis direction via O-H⋯Cl and N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯Cl inter-actions link further these chains into layers parallel to the bc plane. The salt, obtained from a racemic solution, was found to crystallize in the chiral P2(1)2(1)2 space group, indicating that, in the absence of any evident chirality-inducing process, the polycrystalline powders consist of an equivalent mixture of R and S enanti-omers, forming a racemic conglomerate.

Methyl-ergometrine maleate from synchrotron powder diffraction data.

Project description:The title compound {systematic name: 9,10-didehydro-N-[1-(hydroxy-meth-yl)prop-yl]-d-lysergamide maleate}, C(20)H(26)N(3)O(2) (+)·C(4)H(3)O(4) (-), contains a large rigid ergolene group. This group consists of an indole plane connected to a six-membered carbon ring adopting an envelope conformation and N-methyl-tetra-hydro-pyridine where the methyl group is in an equatorial position. In the crystal, inter-molecular N-H?O, O-H?N and O-H?O hydrogen bonds form an extensive three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network, which holds the cations and anions together.

Acemetacin cocrystal structures by powder X-ray diffraction.

Project description:Cocrystals of acemetacin drug (ACM) with nicotinamide (NAM), p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), valerolactam (VLM) and 2-pyridone (2HP) were prepared by melt crystallization and their X-ray crystal structures determined by high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction. The powerful technique of structure determination from powder data (SDPD) provided details of molecular packing and hydrogen bonding in pharmaceutical cocrystals of acemetacin. ACM-NAM occurs in anhydrate and hydrate forms, whereas the other structures crystallized in a single crystalline form. The carboxylic acid group of ACM forms theacid-amide dimer three-point synthon R32(9)R22(8)R32(9) with three different syn amides (VLM, 2HP and caprolactam). The conformations of the ACM molecule observed in the crystal structures differ mainly in the mutual orientation of chlorobenzene fragment and the neighboring methyl group, being anti (type I) or syn (type II). ACM hydrate, ACM-NAM, ACM-NAM-hydrate and the piperazine salt of ACM exhibit the type I conformation, whereas ACM polymorphs and other cocrystals adopt the ACM type II conformation. Hydrogen-bond interactions in all the crystal structures were quantified by calculating their molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces. Hirshfeld surface analysis of the cocrystal surfaces shows that about 50% of the contribution is due to a combination of strong and weak O?H, N?H, Cl?H and C?H interactions. The physicochemical properties of these cocrystals are under study.

Characterizing dislocation loops in irradiated polycrystalline Zr alloys by X-ray line profile analysis of powder diffraction patterns with satellites.

Project description:This work extends the convolutional multiple whole profile (CMWP) line profile analysis (LPA) procedure to determine the total dislocation density and character of irradiation-induced dislocation loops in commercial polycrystalline Zr specimens. Zr alloys are widely used in the nuclear industry as fuel cladding materials in which irradiation-induced point defects evolve into dislocation loops. LPA has long been established as a powerful tool to determine the density and nature of lattice defects in plastically deformed materials. The CMWP LPA procedure is based on the Krivoglaz-Wilkens theory in which the dislocation structure is characterized by the total dislocation density ρ and the dislocation arrangement parameter M. In commercial Zr alloys irradiation-induced dislocation loops broaden the peak profiles, mainly in the tail regions, and occasionally generate small satellites next to the Bragg peaks. In this work, two challenges in powder diffraction patterns of irradiated Zr alloys are solved: (i) determination of the M values from the long tail regions of peaks has been made unequivocal and (ii) satellites have been fitted separately, using physically well established principles, in order to exclude them from the dislocation determination process. Referring to the theory of heterogeneous dislocation distributions, determination of the total dislocation density from the main peaks free of satellites has been justified. The dislocation loop structure has been characterized by the total dislocation density of loops and the M parameter correlated to the dipole character of dislocation loops. The extended CMWP procedure is applied to determine the total dislocation density, the dipole character of dislocation loops, and the fractions of 〈a〉- and 〈c〉-type loops in proton- or neutron-irradiated polycrystalline Zr alloys used in the nuclear energy industry.

ID22 - the high-resolution powder-diffraction beamline at ESRF.

Project description:Following Phase 2 of the upgrade of the ESRF in which the storage ring was replaced by a new low-emittance ring along with many other facility upgrades, the status of ID22, the high-resolution powder-diffraction beamline, is described. The beamline has an in-vacuum undulator as source providing X-rays in the range 6-75 keV. ID22's principle characteristics include very high angular resolution as a result of the highly collimated and monochromatic beam, coupled with a 13-channel Si 111 multi-analyser stage between the sample and a Dectris Eiger2 X 2M-W CdTe pixel detector. The detector's axial resolution allows recorded 2θ values to be automatically corrected for the effects of axial divergence, resulting in narrower and more-symmetric peaks compared with the previous fixed-axial-slit arrangement. The axial acceptance can also be increased with increasing diffraction angle, thus simultaneously improving the statistical quality of high-angle data. A complementary Perkin Elmer XRD1611 medical-imaging detector is available for faster, lower-resolution data, often used at photon energies of 60-70 keV for pair-distribution function analysis, although this is also possible in high-resolution mode by scanning up to 120° 2θ at 35 keV. There are various sample environments, allowing sample temperatures from 4 K to 1600°C, a capillary cell for non-corrosive gas atmospheres in the range 0-100 bar, and a sample-changing robot that can accommodate 75 capillary samples compatible with the temperature range 80 K to 950°C.
