Water balance, tracked by extracellular osmolality, is regulated by feedback and feedforward mechanisms. Feedback regulation is reactive, occurring as deviations in osmolality are <i>detected</i>. Feedforward or presystemic regulation is proactive, occurring when disturbances in osmolality are <i>anticipated</i>.
