Project description:Our contribution demonstrates that rhodium, an element that has barely been reported as an active metal for selective dehydrogenation of alkanes becomes a very active, selective, and robust dehydrogenation catalyst when exposed to propane in the form of single atoms at the interface of a solid-supported, highly dynamic liquid Ga-Rh mixture. We demonstrate that the transition to a fully liquid supported alloy droplet at Ga/Rh ratios above 80, results in a drastic increase in catalyst activity with high propylene selectivity. The combining results from catalytic studies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, IR-spectroscopy under reaction conditions, microscopy, and density-functional theory calculations, we obtained a comprehensive microscopy picture of the working principle of the Ga-Rh supported catalytically active liquid metal solution.

Project description:Supported Catalytically Active Liquid Metal Solutions (SCALMS) were recently described as a new class of heterogeneous catalysts, where the catalytic transformation takes place at the highly dynamic interface of a liquid alloy. Their application in alkane dehydrogenation has been claimed to be superior to classical heterogeneous catalysts, because the single atom nature of Rh dissolved in liquid Ga hinders the formation of significant amounts of coke, e.?g. by oligomerisation of carbon fragments and excessive dehydrogenation. In the present study, we investigate the coking behaviour of Ga-Rh SCALMS during dehydrogenation of propane in detail by means of high-resolution thermogravimetry. We report that the application of Ga-Rh SCALMS indeed limits the formation of coke when compared to the Ga-free Rh catalyst, in particular when relating coke formation to the catalytic performance. Furthermore, the formed coke has been shown to be highly reactive during temperature programmed oxidation in 21?% O2/He with onset temperatures of approx. 150?°C enabling a regeneration of the Ga-Rh SCALMS system under mild conditions. The activation energy of the oxidation lies in the lower range of values reported for spent cracking catalysts. Monitoring the formation of coke and performance of SCALMS in?situ via thermogravimetry coupled with mass spectrometry revealed the continuous formation of coke, which becomes the only process affecting the net weight change after a certain time on stream.

Project description:Gallium-rich supported catalytically active liquid metal solutions (SCALMS) were recently introduced as a new way towards heterogeneous single atom catalysis. SCALMS were demonstrated to exhibit a certain resistance against coking during the dehydrogenation of alkanes using Ga-rich alloys of noble metals. Here, the conceptual catalytic application of SCALMS in dry reforming of methane (DRM) is tested with non-noble metal (Co, Cu, Fe, Ni) atoms in the gallium-rich liquid alloy. This study introduces SCALMS to high-temperature applications and an oxidative reaction environment. Most catalysts were shown to undergo severe oxidation during DRM, while Ga-Ni SCALMS retained a certain level of activity. This observation is explained by a kinetically controlled redox process, namely oxidation to gallium oxide species and re-reduction via H2 activation over Ni. Consequentially, this redox process can be shifted to the metallic side when using increasing concentrations of Ni in Ga, which strongly suppresses coke formation. Density-functional theory (DFT) based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were performed to confirm the increased availability of Ni at the liquid alloy-gas interface. However, leaching of gallium via the formation of volatile oxidic species during the hypothesised redox cycles was identified indicating a critical instability of Ga-Ni SCALMS for prolonged test durations.

Project description:Supported catalytically active liquid metal solutions (SCALMS) of Pt in Ga (2 at.-% Pt) were studied in the temperature range of 500 to 600 °C for propane dehydrogenation. A facile synthesis procedure using ultrasonication was implemented and compared to a previously reported organo-chemical route for gallium deposition. The procedure was applied to synthesize GaPt-SCALMS catalyst on silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and silicon carbide (SiC) to investigate the effect of the support material on the catalytic performance. The SiC-based SCALMS catalyst showed the highest activity, while SiO2-based SCALMS showed the highest stability and lowest cracking tendency at higher temperatures. The selectivity toward propene for the SiO2-based catalyst remained above 93% at 600 °C. The catalysts were analyzed for coke content after use by temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) and Raman spectroscopy. While the SiC- and SiO2-supported SCALMS systems showed hardly any coke formation, the Al2O3-supported systems suffered from pronounced coking. SEM-EDX analyses of the catalysts before and after reaction indicated that no perceivable morphological changes occur during reaction. The SCALMS catalysts under investigation are compared with supported Pt and supported GaPt solid-phase catalyst, and possible deactivation pathways are discussed.

Project description:With commercial TiO2 as the precursor, titanium nitride nanotubes (TiN-NTs) were fabricated through a hydrothermal - ammonia nitriding route, and next non-noble metal nanosized Ni particles were evenly and firmly anchored on the surface of the TiN-NTs via a PVP-mediated non-aqueous phase reduction-deposition strategy, to obtain the supported catalyst Ni@TiN-NTs. The X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy (FE-SEM/TEM) and specific surface area measurements were used to characterize and analyze the phase composition, surface microstructure and morphological features of the product. The catalytic activity of the Ni@TiN-NTs for hydrolyzing ammonia borane to generate hydrogen (H2) under different conditions was evaluated systematically. The results reveal that the as-fabricated TiN-NTs are composed of TiN and a small amount of TiN x O y with the approximate molar atomic ratio of Ti to N at 1 : 1, existing as hollow microtubules with mean tube diameter of 130 nm and length of about 1 μm. Via in situ reduction and deposition, Ni nanoparticles can be uniformly anchored on the surface of TiN-NTs. The catalytic activities of Ni(x)@TiN-NTs with different Ni loading amounts are all higher than that of single metal Ni nanoparticles. The temperature has a positive effect on the catalytic activity of Ni(20)@TiN-NTs, and its total turnover frequency for hydrolyzing ammonia borane is 11.73 mol(H2) (mol Ni)-1 min-1, with an apparent activation energy of 52.05 kJ mol-1 at 303 K. After 5 cycles, the Ni(20)@TiN-NTs catalyst still maintains 87% of the initial catalytic activity. It could be suggested that these tactics can also be extended to the fabrication of other metal or alloy catalysts supported by TiN-NTs, with great application potential and development prospects.

Project description:Hyperbranched ethylene oligomers and polar functionalized co-oligomers synthesized via ethylene chain walking (co) oligomerization is a very attractive strategy. In this study, a series of dibenzhydryl iminopyridyl ligands with benzocycloalkyl and naphthyl moieties and the corresponding Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. The Ni(II) complexes were highly effective in ethylene oligomerization and ethylene oligomers with hyperbranched microstructures were generated from this system. The corresponding Pd(II) complexes showed moderate oligomerization activities in ethylene oligomerization and hyperbranched ethylene oligomers were also yielded from the system. More significantly, the Pd(II) complexes can also effectively promote the co-oligomerization of ethylene with methyl acrylate (MA) to obtain hyperbranched polar functionalized ethylene-MA co-oligomers. The reaction temperature, catalyst ligand structure and metal type all have significant effects on ethylene (co) oligomerization with respect to catalytic activity, molecular weight and topology of the oligomers.

Project description:Herein, we present the imbibition-induced, spontaneous, and selective wetting characteristics of gallium-based liquid metal alloys on a metallized surface with micro-scale topographical features. Gallium-based liquid metal alloys are fascinating materials that have enormous surface tension; therefore, they are difficult to pattern into films. The complete wetting of eutectic alloy of gallium and indium is realized on microstructured copper surfaces in the presence of HCl vapor, which removes the native oxide from the liquid metal alloy. This wetting is numerically explained based on the Wenzel's model and imbibition process, revealing that the dimensions of the microstructures are critical for effective imbibition-driven wetting of the liquid metal. Further, we demonstrate that the spontaneous wetting of the liquid metal can be directed selectively along the microstructured region on the metallic surface to create patterns. This simple process enables the uniform coating and patterning of the liquid metal over large areas without an external force or complex processing. We demonstrate that the liquid metal-patterned substrates maintain electrical connection even in a stretched state and after repetitive stretching cycles.

Project description:Zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) is effective for C3H6/C3H8 separation because of the "sieving effect" of a six-membered (6-M) window. Here, we demonstrate that ZIF-8 is a versatile material that could effectively separate C2H4 from C2H6 via its 4-M window along the <100> direction. We established a facile and environmentally friendly carbon nanotube (CNT)-induced oriented membrane (CNT-OM) approach to fabricate a {100}-oriented ZIF-8 membrane (100-M). In this approach, 2-methyimidazole was anchored onto the CNT surface followed by 3-hour in situ growth in aqueous solution at room temperature. The obtained 100-M, whose 4-M window is aligned along the transport pathway, showed ~3 times higher C2H4/C2H6 selectivity than a randomly oriented membrane. Thus, this work demonstrates that the membrane orientation plays an important role in tuning selectivity toward different gas pairs. Furthermore, 100-M exhibited excellent mechanical stability that could sustain the separation performance after bending at a curvature of ~109 m-1.

Project description:The production of ethylene glycol (EG) from cellulose has garnered significant attention in recent years as an attractive alternative to fossil fuels due to the potential of cellulose as a renewable and sustainable feedstock. In this work, to the best of our knowledge, a series of low-cost Ni-W bimetallic catalysts supported on glucose/carbon nanotube hybrid carbons were synthesised for the first time and employed to transform cellulose into EG. Two different strategies were combined for the preparation of the carbons: the activation and addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to obtain a hybrid material (AG-CNT). The catalytic conversion process proceeded through cellulose hydrolysis to glucose, followed by glucose retro-aldol condensation to glycolaldehyde and its subsequent hydrogenation to EG. Through the optimisation of the catalyst's properties, particularly the metals' content, a good synergistic effect of C-C bond cleavage and hydrogenation capabilities was assured, resulting in the highly selective production of EG. The balance between Ni and W active sites was confirmed to be a crucial parameter. Thus, total cellulose conversion (100%) was achieved with EG yields of 60-62%, which are amongst the best yields ever reported for the catalytic conversion of cellulose into EG via carbon-supported catalysts.
