Ripening of two-dimensional colloidal CdSe nanocrystals into zero-dimensional nanodots.

ABSTRACT: Understanding the ripening of two-dimensional (2D) colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) is important for the controllable synthesis of NCs with desired morphology and properties. In this study, we systematically investigate the ripening behavior of the 2D CdSe NCs in the presence of a short-chain acetate ligand and a long-chain oleate ligand. We find that a low acetate/oleate ratio, a low Cd/Se ratio, and a low monomer concentration help in the ripening of the 2D NCs to form 0D NCs. Moreover, a porous nanosheet intermediate is observed when there is a high Cd/Se ratio, whereas in the case of a low Cd/Se ratio, the ripening starts from the edge of the nanosheets, resulting in a saw-like nanosheet intermediate. These findings provide necessary insights into the growth and ripening of 2D CdSe NCs that allow for the controlled synthesis of 0D and 2D CdSe NCs.

Colloidal CdSe nanocrystals are inherently defective.

Project description:Colloidal CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) have shown promise in applications ranging from LED displays to medical imaging. Their unique photophysics depend sensitively on the presence or absence of surface defects. Using simulations, we show that CdSe NCs are inherently defective; even for stoichiometric NCs with perfect ligand passivation and no vacancies or defects, we still observe that the low energy spectrum is dominated by dark, surface-associated excitations, which are more numerous in larger NCs. Surface structure analysis shows that the majority of these states involve holes that are localized on two-coordinate Se atoms. As chalcogenide atoms are not passivated by any Lewis base ligand, varying the ligand should not dramatically change the number of dark states, which we confirm by simulating three passivation schemes. Our results have significant implications for understanding CdSe NC photophysics, and suggest that photochemistry and short-range photoinduced charge transfer should be much more facile than previously anticipated.

Exploring magneto-optic properties of colloidal two-dimensional copper-doped CdSe nanoplatelets.

Project description:Transition-metal-doped semiconductor nanocrystals have received significant attention because of their attractive features deeming them invaluable in various technological fields including optoelectronics, bio-photonics, and energy conversion, to name a few. Of particular, these interests are two-dimensional materials with useful optical and magnetic properties combined with their large surface areas opening up new applications in biotechnology. These applications range from multimodal optical and magnetic bioimaging and sensing to measuring the weak magnetic field due to brain waves using their magneto-optic properties stemming from the exchange interaction between the transition metal dopants and the carrier spins. These magnetic 2D materials could also significantly advance the field of spintronics. In this work, we report on a study of the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of colloidal two-dimensional (2D) copper-doped CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) that are synthesized using a high-temperature colloidal technique. We carried out optical and circularly polarized magneto-photoluminescence spectrometry to investigate the magnetism in our solution-processed nanostructures doped with copper ion impurities. At cryogenic temperatures, two excitonic features are observed for doped NPLs, which are more prominent compared to the undoped NPLs. Furthermore, the excitonic circular polarization (CP) is recorded as a function of the applied magnetic field (B) and temperature (T). The detailed analysis provides a picture of the magneto-optical behavior of the doped 2D NPLs in the presence of paramagnetic copper ions. This work paves the way for significant advances in bio/nanophotonics where tunable optical and magnetic properties of doped nanoplatelets can be leveraged to make more efficient, flexible, and low-cost devices.

Thermal Stability and Anisotropic Sublimation of Two-Dimensional Colloidal Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 Nanocrystals.

Project description:The structural and compositional stabilities of two-dimensional (2D) Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 nanocrystals, produced by both colloidal synthesis and by liquid phase exfoliation, were studied by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) during annealing at temperatures between 350 and 500 °C. The sublimation process induced by annealing is structurally and chemically anisotropic and takes place through the preferential dismantling of the prismatic {011̅0} type planes, and through the preferential sublimation of Te (or Se). The observed anisotropic sublimation is independent of the method of nanocrystal's synthesis, their morphology, or the presence of surfactant molecules on the nanocrystals surface. A thickness-dependent depression in the sublimation point has been observed with nanocrystals thinner than about 15 nm. The Bi2Se3 nanocrystals were found to sublimate below 280 °C, while the Bi2Te3 ones sublimated at temperatures between 350 and 450 °C, depending on their thickness, under the vacuum conditions in the TEM column. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the sublimation of the prismatic {011̅0} facets is more energetically favorable. Within the level of modeling employed, the sublimation occurs at a rate about 700 times faster than the sublimation of the {0001} planes at the annealing temperatures used in this work. This supports the distinctly anisotropic mechanisms of both sublimation and growth of Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 nanocrystals, known to preferentially adopt a 2D morphology. The anisotropic sublimation behavior is in agreement with the intrinsic anisotropy in the surface free energy brought about by the crystal structure of Bi2Te3 or Bi2Se3.

Highly Emissive Colloidal Nanocrystals of a "2.5-Dimensional" Monomethylhydrazinium Lead Bromide.

Project description:The ability to control materials at the nanoscale has advanced optoelectronic devices, such as LEDs, displays, and quantum light sources. A new frontier is controlling exciton properties beyond quantum size confinement, achieved through single monolayer heterostructures. In the prototypical example of transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures and moiré superlattices, excitons with long lifetimes, strong binding energies, and tunable dipole moments have been demonstrated and are ideal for optoelectronics and quantum applications. Expanding this material platform is crucial for further progress. This study introduces colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) of monomethylhydrazinium lead bromide (MMHPbBr3), a novel lead halide perovskite (LHP) with a unique "2.5-dimensional" electronic structure. While the spatial dimensionality of the NC extends in all three dimensions, these NCs exhibit excitonic properties intermediate between 2D and 3D LHPs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that MMHPbBr3 features spatially separated electron and hole wave functions, with electrons delocalized in 3D and holes confined in 2D monolayers. Synthesized via a rapid colloidal method, these NCs were characterized by using techniques such as 4D-STEM and nuclear magnetic resonance, confirming their monoclinic structure. Optical analysis revealed size-dependent properties and 3D quantum confinement effects, with three distinct photoluminescence (PL) bands at cryogenic temperatures corresponding to excitons with varying interlayer coupling. PL spectroscopy of single MMHPbBr3 NCs reveals their photon emission statistics, expanding their potential for unconventional quantum material designs.

Energy Transfer between Conjugated Colloidal Ga₂O₃ and CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Nanocrystals for White Light Emitting Applications.

Project description:Developing solid state materials capable of generating homogeneous white light in an energy efficient and resource-sustainable way is central to the design of new and improved devices for various lighting applications. Most currently-used phosphors depend on strategically important rare earth elements, and rely on a multicomponent approach, which produces sub-optimal quality white light. Here, we report the design and preparation of a colloidal white-light emitting nanocrystal conjugate. This conjugate is obtained by linking colloidal Ga₂O₃ and II-VI nanocrystals in the solution phase with a short bifunctional organic molecule (thioglycolic acid). The two types of nanocrystals are electronically coupled by Förster resonance energy transfer owing to the short separation between Ga₂O₃ (energy donor) and core/shell CdSe/CdS (energy acceptor) nanocrystals, and the spectral overlap between the photoluminescence of the donor and the absorption of the acceptor. Using steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies, we quantified the contribution of the energy transfer to the photoluminescence spectral power distribution and the corresponding chromaticity of this nanocrystal conjugate. Quantitative understanding of this new system allows for tuning of the emission color and the design of quasi-single white light emitting inorganic phosphors without the use of rare-earth elements.

Time-Frequency Signatures of Electronic Coherence of Colloidal CdSe Quantum Dot Dimer Assemblies Probed at Room Temperature by Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy.

Project description:Electronic coherence signatures can be directly identified in the time-frequency maps measured in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). Here, we demonstrate the theory and discuss the advantages of this approach via the detailed application to the fast-femtosecond beatings of a wide variety of electronic coherences in ensemble dimers of quantum dots (QDs), assembled from QDs of 3 nm in diameter, with 8% size dispersion in diameter. The observed and computed results can be consistently characterized directly in the time-frequency domain by probing the polarization in the 2DES setup. The experimental and computed time-frequency maps are found in very good agreement, and several electronic coherences are characterized at room temperature in solution, before the extensive dephasing due to the size dispersion begins. As compared to the frequency-frequency maps that are commonly used in 2DES, the time-frequency maps allow exploiting electronic coherences without additional post-processing and with fewer 2DES measurements. Towards quantum technology applications, we also report on the modeling of the time-frequency photocurrent response of these electronic coherences, which paves the way to integrating QD devices with classical architectures, thereby enhancing the quantum advantage of such technologies for parallel information processing at room temperature.

Colloidal Bismuth Chalcohalide Nanocrystals.

Project description:Here we present a colloidal approach to synthesize bismuth chalcohalide nanocrystals (BiEX NCs, in which E=S, Se and X=Cl, Br, I). Our method yields orthorhombic elongated BiEX NCs, with BiSCl crystallizing in a previously unknown polymorph. The BiEX NCs display a composition-dependent band gap spanning the visible spectral range and absorption coefficients exceeding 105 cm-1 . The BiEX NCs show chemical stability at standard laboratory conditions and form colloidal inks in different solvents. These features enable the solution processing of the NCs into robust solid films yielding stable photoelectrochemical current densities under solar-simulated irradiation. Overall, our versatile synthetic protocol may prove valuable in accessing colloidal metal chalcohalide nanomaterials at large and contributes to establish metal chalcohalides as a promising complement to metal chalcogenides and halides for applied nanotechnology.

Assembly of multi-flavored two-dimensional colloidal crystals.

Project description:We systematically investigate the assembly of binary multi-flavored colloidal mixtures in two dimensions. In these mixtures all pairwise interactions between species may be tuned independently. This introduces an additional degree of freedom over more traditional binary mixtures with fixed mixing rules, which is anticipated to open new avenues for directed self-assembly. At present, colloidal self-assembly into non-trivial lattices tends to require either high pressures for isotropically interacting particles, or the introduction of directionally anisotropic interactions. Here we demonstrate tunable assembly into a plethora of structures which requires neither of these conditions. We develop a minimal model that defines a three-dimensional phase space containing one dimension for each pairwise interaction, then employ various computational techniques to map out regions of this phase space in which the system self-assembles into these different morphologies. We then present a mean-field model that is capable of reproducing these results for size-symmetric mixtures, which reveals how to target different structures by tuning pairwise interactions, solution stoichiometry, or both. Concerning particle size asymmetry, we find that domains in this model's phase space, corresponding to different morphologies, tend to undergo a continuous "rotation" whose magnitude is proportional to the size asymmetry. Such continuity enables one to estimate the relative stability of different lattices for arbitrary size asymmetries. Owing to its simplicity and accuracy, we expect this model to serve as a valuable design tool for engineering binary colloidal crystals from multi-flavored components.

Broadband emission from zero-dimensional Cs<sub>4</sub>PbI<sub>6</sub> perovskite nanocrystals.

Project description:To overcome the drawbacks in three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, such as instability, surface hydration, and ion migration, recently researchers have focused on comparatively stable lower-dimensional perovskite derivatives. All-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) perovskites (e.g., Cs4PbX6; X = Cl-, Br-, I-) can be evolved as a high performing material due to their larger exciton binding energy and better structural stability. The clear understanding of carrier recombination process in 0D perovskites is very important for better exploitation in light-emitting devices. In this work, we comprehensively studied the light emission process in 0D Cs4PbI6 nanocrystals (NCs) and interestingly we observe intense white light emission at low temperatures. According to our experimental observations, we conclude that the white light emission contains an intrinsic exciton emission at 2.95 eV along with a broadband emission covering from 1.77 eV to 2.6 eV. We also confirm that the broadband emission is related to the carrier recombination of both self-trapped excitons (STE) and defect state trapped excitons. Our investigations reveal the carrier recombination processes in Cs4PbI6 NCs and provide experimental guidelines for the potential application of white light generation.
