Association between asthma and dry eye disease: a meta-analysis based on observational studies.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

This study aimed to systematically review the relationship between dry eye disease (DED) and asthma based on published population-based studies.

Data sources

PubMed, EMBASE and ISI Web of Science from their inception were searched up to October 2019.

Study selection

Observational studies addressing the association between asthma and DED will be eligible.

Data extraction and synthesis

Two reviewers independently conducted the data extraction and quality assessment. We used a random-effects model for all analyses. Subgroup analysis according to ethnicity was performed to test the influence of ethnicity on the association.

Main outcomes and measures

Six independent studies (a total of 45 215 patients with asthma and 232 864 control subjects) were included in this review and had an average of seven stars by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Our current findings suggest that the prevalence of DED was higher in the asthma group than in the control group (Z=7.42, p<0.00001; OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.38). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, Australian, Caucasian and Asian patients with asthma showed an increased risk of DED.

Dry Eye Disease and Tear Cytokine Levels-A Meta-Analysis.

Project description:Background-It is recognized that inflammation is an underlying cause of dry eye disease (DED), with cytokine release involved. We systematically reviewed literature with meta-analyses to quantitatively summarize the levels of tear cytokines in DED. Methods-The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Ovid, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were reviewed until September 2019, and original articles investigating tear cytokines in DED patients were included. Differences of cytokines levels of DED patients and controls were summarized by standardized mean differences (SMD) using a random effects model. Study quality was assessed by applying Newcastle-Ottawa-Scale and the GRADE quality score. Methods of analytical procedures were included as covariate. Results-Thirteen articles investigating 342 DED patients and 205 healthy controls were included in the meta-analysis. The overall methodological quality of these studies was moderate. Systematic review of the selected articles revealed that DED patients had higher tear levels of interleukin (IL)-1?, IL-6, chemokine IL-8, IL-10, interferon-?, IFN-?, and tumor necrosis factor-?, TNF-? as compared to controls. Evidence was less strong for IL-2 and IL-17A. Conclusions-Data show that levels of tear cytokines in DED and control display a great variability, and further studies of higher quality enrolling a higher number of subjects are needed, to define a cut-off value.

Association between the polymorphisms of CALM1 gene and osteoarthritis risk: a meta-analysis based on observational studies.

Project description:The existing studies on the association between polymorphisms of Calmodulin 1 (CALM1) gene and the risk of osteoarthritis (OA, a complex multifactorial disease and a major degenerative form of arthritis) in different populations have yielded conflicting findings. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis by systematically searching PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar, and assessing this association by calculating pooled odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analyses stratified by ethnicity, OA type, and genotype were also conducted. Six studies (2752 cases and 3259 controls) involving six single nucleotide polymorphisms were included. Our data suggested that the T allele and genotype TT of the rs12885713 polymorphism, and the C allele of the rs2300496 polymorphism in the CALM1 gene all increased the risk of OA. The pooled results revealed no significant association between the CALM1 rs3213718 polymorphism and the risk of OA. Stratification analyses by ethnicity and OA type showed that the rs12885713 polymorphism increased the risk of OA among Asians and in knee OA, respectively. In conclusion, the rs12885713 and rs2300496 polymorphisms of the CALM1 gene may both increase the risk of OA. Owing to the limitations of the present study, this finding should be further confirmed in future well-designed studies.

Association between cadmium exposure and renal cancer risk: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental pollutant and has been a recognized carcinogen for several decades. Many observational studies reported Cd exposure might be one cause of renal cancer. However, these findings are inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between cadmium exposure and renal cancer risk. A comprehensive PubMed and Embase search was conducted to retrieve observational studies meeting our meta-analysis criteria. A combined odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied to assess the association between Cd exposure and renal cancer risk. The meta-analysis showed that a high Cd exposure significantly increased renal cancer 1.47 times (OR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.27 to 1.71, for highest versus lowest category of cadmium categories). The significant association remained consistent when stratified by geographic region and gender, however mixed results were produced when stratified by sample size, study design, NOS score, adjustment for covariates, effects measure, and exposure type. Our results indicated that a high Cd exposure was associated with increased renal cancer risk and the association was higher for occupational exposure compared with non-occupational exposure. This meta-analysis suggests that a high Cd exposure may be a risk factor for renal cancer in occupational population.

Association between hypertension and risk of knee osteoarthritis: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:Evidence from observational studies shows that hypertension may be a risk factor for knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the relationship between hypertension and knee OA risk remains controversial. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the relationship between hypertension and risk of knee OA.Three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library) were searched up to July 25, 2016. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were extracted from the included observational studies. Publication bias, heterogeneity test, and subgroup analyses were performed.Eight studies including 2 cohort studies and 6 cross-sectional studies with 9762 participants were finally included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that hypertension was significantly associated with higher radiographic knee OA and symptomatic knee OA risks of 2.01 (95% CI, 1.28-3.15, I = 90.2%, P for heterogeneity <.001) and 1.49 (95% CI, 1.26-1.77, I = 0%, P for heterogeneity <.412), respectively. No publication bias was detected. The subgroup analysis showed that the study design did not influence the results (radiographic knee OA: OR = 1.42, 95% CI, 1.19-1.71 for cross-sectional studies and OR = 2.17, 95% CI, 1.30-3.63 for cohort studies; and symptomatic knee OA: OR = 1.85, 95% CI, 1.10-3.13) for cross-sectional studies and OR = 2.74, 95% CI, 1.81-4.16 for cohort studies).This meta-analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between hypertension and knee OA (both radiographic and symptomatic). However, further original studies are needed that use a better design.

Association between Tooth Loss and Gastric Cancer: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Project description:Observational studies showed that tooth loss is associated with gastric cancer, but the findings are inconsistent. In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between tooth loss and gastric cancer. Relevant studies were screened in PubMed and Embase databases, and nine observational studies were considered eligible for the analysis. The combined relative risks for the highest versus the lowest categories of tooth loss were 1.86 (95% CI: 1.08-3.21) and 1.31 (95% CI: 1.12-1.53) in case control and cohort studies, respectively. However, unstable results were observed in the stratified and sensitivity analysis. The current evidence, based solely on four case-control studies and five cohort studies, suggested that tooth loss is a potential marker of gastric cancer. However, we can not concluded at this time that tooth loss may be a risk factor for gastric cancer due to significant heterogeneity among studies and mixed results between case-control studies and cohort studies. Additional large-scale and high-quality prospective studies are required to evaluate the association between tooth loss and risk of gastric cancer.

Association between dairy intake and gastric cancer: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:PurposeObservational studies have given inconsistent findings on the relationship between intake of dairy products and gastric cancer. We therefore conducted a systematic review with a meta-analysis of observational studies to summarize available evidence on this point.MethodsWe searched the electronic literature databases of PubMed (Medline), EMBASE and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database up until August 30, 2013. All studies were limited to the English language. Random-effects models were used to pool study results between dairy products consumption and the risk of gastric cancer. We also performed subgroup, publication bias and sensitivity analysis.ResultsEight prospective studies and 18 case-control studies were included in our analysis, with a total number of 7272 gastric cancer cases and 223,355 controls. Pooled relative risks of all studies showed no significant association between dairy intake and gastric cancer (odds ratio [OR]: 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.96-1.25). When study design was separately analyzed, population-based case-control studies showed a positive association between dairy intake and gastric cancer risk (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.07-1.74), whereas no associations were shown by hospital-based case-control studies (OR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.72-1.02) or cohort studies (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.91-1.13).ConclusionsThe meta-analysis shows that no clear association apparently exists between consumption of dairy products and gastric cancer risk. Further well-designed cohort and intervention studies should be conducted to verify this lack of association.

Association between IL-13 +1923C/T polymorphism and asthma risk: a meta-analysis based on 26 case-control studies.

Project description:Asthma is a serious and hereditary respiratory disorder affecting all age groups. Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a central regulator of allergic inflammation. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the relationship between IL-13 +1923C/T polymorphism and asthma susceptibility. Relevant case-control studies published between January 2000 and July 2016 were searched in the online databases. Review Manage (RevMan) 5.3 was used to conduct the statistical analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with its 95% confidence interval (CI) was employed to calculate the strength of association. A total of 26 articles were retrieved, including 17642 asthma patients and 42402 controls. Overall, our results found that IL-13 +1923C/T polymorphism was significantly associated with increased risk of asthma under each genetic model (P<0.00001). Subgroup analysis by ethnicity showed that alleles and genotypes of this variant correlated with asthma among Asians and Caucasians, but only TT genotype under the homozygote model in Africans. When stratified by age group, this variant highly correlated with asthma in children and moderately in adults. Furthermore, the TT, CT and CC genotypes in asthma group were all significantly associated with increased IgE levels in sera of asthma patients when compared with controls. Our results suggested that IL-13 +1923C/T polymorphism contributed to the development of asthma. Further case-control studies with more ethnicities are still needed.

Association Between Early Sjogren Markers and Symptoms and Signs of Dry Eye.

Project description:PurposeAnimal models suggest that early markers of Sjögren syndrome (EMS)-antibodies against salivary protein 1, parotid secretory protein, and carbonic anhydrase 6 (CA6)-are more accurate signals of early Sjögren when compared with classic markers (anti-Ro and anti-La). To further understand the relationship between EMS and dry eye (DE), we compared symptoms and signs of DE in subjects who tested positive versus negative for EMS.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, patients at the Miami Veterans Affairs Eye Clinic who were tested for EMS underwent a standard ocular surface examination. Indications for EMS testing included DE symptoms in combination with dry mouth symptoms, low tear production, corneal staining, or a Sjögren disease-associated autoimmune disease. Statistical tests performed were the ? test, Fisher exact test, independent sample t test, and Spearman correlation.ResultsSeventy-three percent of 44 patients tested positive for 1 or more EMS. CA6 IgG was most frequently elevated, followed by CA6 IgM and parotid secretory protein IgG. EMS-positive versus EMS-negative subjects were more likely to escalate DE treatment past artificial tears to topical cyclosporine (n = 32, 100% vs. n = 9, 75%, P = 0.02). There were no demographic or comorbidity differences between EMS-positive and EMS-negative subjects, and marker levels did not correlate with more severe tear film measures.ConclusionsMost of the individuals with DE tested positive for 1 or more EMS antibodies, including men and Hispanics. Future studies will be needed to understand how to incorporate EMS data into the care of an individual with DE.

The association between alcohol consumption and osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis and meta-regression of observational studies.

Project description:There is conflicting evidence for the association between alcohol consumption and common joint conditions such as Osteoarthritis (OA), which affects millions of people. We sought to determine the true association between alcohol intake and OA. We conducted a PRISMA systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies that reported associations between alcohol consumption and OA. Pooled estimates of association were represented through odds ratios (ORs). Publication bias was assessed with Funnel and Galbraith plots, and risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. We included 29 studies and 25,192 subjects with OA and reported an OR between any alcohol consumption and OA of 0.79 (0.68-0.93), suggesting a protective effect. OR of weekly or more frequent use was 0.79 (0.65-0.97). When grouped by covariates, alcohol consumption was negatively associated with radiographic (0.83, 0.70-0.98), hand (0.80, 0.66-0.95) and knee OA (0.85, 0.72-0.99), North American ethnicity and female gender. Subgroup analysis of unadjusted data resulted in an OR of 0.70 (0.55-0.89) but this disappeared upon analysis of studies with data adjusted for any covariate (0.93, 0.78-1.10). Whilst our pooled analysis suggest that weekly or more frequent alcohol consumption was negatively associated with OA, this was not observed when adjusted for confounding factors. Reasons for this include selection bias and lack of longitudinal exposure and adjustment for confounding variables. Therefore, this meta-analysis provides evidence to dispel notions that alcohol use may be protective against OA.
