Project description:Herein, the amino-capped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using tetrabutyl titanate and amino polymers by a two-step sol-gel and hydrothermal method technique for the fabrication of functional cotton fabric. The prepared TiO2 nanoparticles and the treated cotton fabric were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microcopy (FE-SEM) photocatalytic and antibacterial measurement. The results indicate the typical characteristic anatase form of the amino-capped TiO2 NPs with an average crystallite size of 14.9 nm. The treated cotton fabrics exhibit excellent antibacterial property and good photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue.

Project description:In this work, we aim to study zinc oxide (ZnO)-based functional materials over cotton fabrics and their effects after gamma ray exposure of 9 kGy. We found that the binding of the nanoparticles with cotton fabrics can be enhanced after irradiation. This could be due to the oxygen deficiency or defects created in the interface between ZnO and cotton fabrics after irradiation. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to detect the oxygen inadequacies generated in the interior and at the surface of the ZnO nanoparticles after gamma ray exposure. XPS results showed that the binding energy of Zn shifts by 2 eV at 1.5 kGy and by 4 eV at 9 kGy. This huge shift of about 4 eV is completely different from other works due to the reaction that takes place on the interface between ZnO nanostructures and cotton fabrics after gamma ray irradiation. Overall, this work suggests that after gamma ray irradiation, there is an enhanced level of binding between the coated functional nanoparticles and cotton fabrics, which can be advantageous for the textile industries.

Project description:In the present work, a mild strategy was employed to obtain cotton fabrics (CFs) coated with Cu₂(OH)PO₄ (CHP) nanoparticles to achieve self-cleaning property. The phytic acid (IP6) assisted method was employed to synthesize nanoparticles (CHP-IP6). The as-prepared coated cotton fabrics were characterized using the following techniques: Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The CHP-IP6 coated cotton fabrics showed significant photocatalytic activity, excellent photocatalytic stability, and good discoloration of methylene blue (MB) stains when exposed to sunlight, which could have important applications as tablecloths, household apparels, and industrial workwear.

Project description:TiO2-coated Ag nanorods (Ag@TiO2 NRs) have been fabricated as multifunctional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. Uniform TiO2 shells could sufficiently protect the internal Ag NRs against oxidation and sulfuration, thus the temporal stability of SERS substrates was markedly improved. Meanwhile, due to the synergetic effect between crystalline TiO2 and Ag, the nanocomposites could clean themselves via photocatalytic degradation of the adsorbed molecules under ultraviolet irradiation and water dilution, making the SERS substrates renewable. Such Ag@TiO2 NRs were shown to serve as outstanding SERS sensors featuring high sensitivity, superior stability and recyclability.

Project description:Antiviral hydrophobic cellulose-based cotton or non-woven fabrics containing mesoporous TiO2 particles were developed for potential use in healthcare and in other contaminated environments. Hydrosols made with the sol-gel method using two different amounts of the Ti precursor were applied to cotton and non-woven fabrics and their virucidal effect on Murine Coronavirus (MHV-3) and Human Adenovirus (HAdV-5) was evaluated under indoor light irradiation. The results show 90% reduction of HAdV-5 and up to 99% of MHV-3 in non-woven fabric, and 90% reduction of MHV-3 and no reduction of HAdV-5 in cotton fabric. The antiviral activity was related to the properties of the TiO2 powders and coatings characterized by BET surface area, DRX, DLS, FTIR, DRS, SEM, TEM and water contact angle. The hydrophobic characteristic of the treated fabrics and the high surface area of the TiO2 particles favor interaction with the virus, especially MHV-3. These results demonstrate that non-woven fabric and cotton, coated with TiO2, can be highly effective in preventing contamination with MHV-3 and HAdV-5 viruses, particularly for applications in healthcare indoor environments. Project description:The emerging pharmaceutical contaminants diclofenac (DCF) and salicylic acid (SA) pose potential hazards to humans and living organisms due to their persistence in water environments. In this work, the conductive polymers polypyrrole (PPY) and polyaniline (PANI) were successfully coated on cotton fabrics, as confirmed by FTIR and SEM measurements. The coated fabrics efficiently removed DCF at pH 5.3 and SA at pH 4, with removal efficiencies that exceeded 90% and 70%, respectively. Adsorption was rapid for most of the tested contaminant-fabric systems and reached equilibrium within 20-30 min. The best adsorption performance for both contaminants was shown on the PPY-coated fabrics, which yielded adsorption capacities of about 65 and 21 mg/g for DCF and SA, respectively. This could be explained by molecular modeling simulations, which mostly estimated higher total cohesive energy densities for adsorption on the PPY-coated fabrics than on the PANI-coated ones. The adsorption mechanism involved both coulombic electrostatic attractions and non-coulombic van der Waals and π-π stacking. The fabrics could be reused for three adsorption-desorption cycles. Immobilization of the conductive polymers on cotton fabrics provides a facile method for their handling and collection during adsorption and regeneration cycles while maintaining their multi-functionality in adsorbing different contaminants.

Project description:Chitosan is an environmentally friendly agent that is used to achieve the antimicrobial properties of textiles. Nowadays, the binding of chitosan to the textiles has been thoroughly researched due to the increasing demands on the stability of achieved properties during the textile care processes. Most crosslinking agents for chitosan are not safe for humans or environment, such as glutaric aldehyde (GA) and formaldehyde derivatives. Eco-friendly polycarboxyilic acids (PCAs) are usually used in after-treatment. In this work, chitosan powder was dissolved in citric acid with sodium hydrophosphite (SHP) as a catalyst. Standard cotton (CO) and polyester/cotton (PES/CO) fabrics were pretreated in 20% NaOH, similar to mercerization, in order to open the structure of the cotton fibers and hydrolyze polyester fibers, continued by finishing in the gelatin chitosan bath. Afterwards, the hot rinsing process, followed by drying and curing, closed the achieved structure. The main objective was to achieve durable antimicrobial properties to multiple maintenance cycles CO and PES/CO fabric in order to apply it in a hospital environment. The characterization of fabrics was performed after treatment, first and fifth washing cycles according ISO 6330:2012 by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), electrokinetic analysis (EKA), by the determination of tensile properties and mechanical damage (wear), and the antimicrobial activity. The application of 20% NaOH led to the swelling and mercerization of cotton cellulose, and hydrolysis of polyester, resulting in better mechanical properties. It has been confirmed that the chitosan particles were well implemented into the cotton fiber and onto to the polyester component of PES/CO blend. The presence of chitosan was confirmed after five washing cycles, but in lower quantity. However, achieved antimicrobial activity is persistent.

Project description:Coating a cationic antibacterial layer on the surface of cotton fabric is an effective strategy to provide it with excellent antibacterial properties and to protect humans from bacterial cross-infection. However, washing with anionic detergent will inactivate the cationic antibacterial coating. Although this problem can be solved by increasing the amount of cationic antibacterial coating, excessive cationic antibacterial coating reduces the drapability of cotton fabric and affects the comfort of wearing it. In this study, a coordinated antibacterial coating strategy based on quaternary ammonium salt and a halogenated amine compound was designed. The results show that the antibacterial effect of the modified cotton fabric was significantly improved. In addition, after mechanically washing the fabric 50 times in the presence of anionic detergent, the antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was still more than 95%. Furthermore, the softness of the obtained cotton fabric showed little change compared with the untreated cotton fabric. This easy-to-implement and cost-effective approach, combined with the cationic contact and the release effect of antibacterial agents, can endow cotton textiles with durable antibacterial properties and excellent wearability.

Project description:The transport properties of commercial carbon nanofibers (CNFs) produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) depend on the various conditions used during their growth and post-growth synthesis, which also affect their derivate CNF-based textile fabrics. Here, the production and thermoelectric (TE) properties of cotton woven fabrics (CWFs) functionalized with aqueous inks made from different amounts of pyrolytically stripped (PS) Pyrograf® III PR 25 PS XT CNFs via dip-coating method are presented. At 30 °C and depending on the CNF content used in the dispersions, the modified textiles show electrical conductivities (σ) varying between ~5 and 23 S m-1 with a constant negative Seebeck coefficient (S) of -1.1 μVK-1. Moreover, unlike the as-received CNFs, the functionalized textiles present an increase in their σ from 30 °C to 100 °C (dσ/dT > 0), explained by the 3D variable range hopping (VRH) model as the charge carriers going beyond an aleatory network of potential wells by thermally activated hopping. However, as it happens with the CNFs, the dip-coated textiles show an increment in their S with temperature (dS/dT > 0) successfully fitted with the model proposed for some doped multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) mats. All these results are presented with the aim of discerning the authentic function of this type of pyrolytically stripped Pyrograf® III CNFs on the thermoelectric properties of their derived textiles.

Project description:The increase in antibiotic resistance reported worldwide poses an immediate threat to human health and highlights the need to find novel approaches to inhibit bacterial growth. In this study, we present a series of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) capped by different N-heterocyclic molecules (N_Au NPs) which can serve as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents. Neither the Au NPs nor N-heterocyclic molecules were toxic to mammalian cells. These N_Au NPs can attach to the surface of bacteria and destroy the bacterial cell wall to induce cell death. Sonochemistry was used to coat Au NPs on the surface of fabrics, which showed superb antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria as well as excellent efficacy in inhibiting bacterial biofilms produced by MDR bacteria. Our study provides a novel strategy for preventing the formation of MDR bacterial biofilms in a straightforward, low-cost, and efficient way, which holds promise for broad clinical applications.
