Project description:With the increasing interest in protein adsorption in fields ranging from bionanotechnology to biomedical engineering, there is a growing need to understand protein-surface interactions at a fundamental level, such as the interaction between individual amino acid residues of a protein and functional groups presented by a surface. However, relatively little data are available that experimentally provide a quantitative, comparative measure of these types of interactions. To address this deficiency, the objective of this study was to generate a database of experimentally measured standard state adsorption free energy (DeltaGoads) values for a wide variety of amino acid residue-surface interactions using a host-guest peptide and alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with polymer-like functionality as the model system. The host-guest amino acid sequence was synthesized in the form of TGTG-X-GTGT, where G and T are glycine and threonine amino acid residues and X represents a variable residue. In this paper, we report DeltaGoads values for the adsorption of 12 different types of the host-guest peptides on a set of nine different SAM surfaces, for a total of 108 peptide-surface systems. The DeltaGoads values for these 108 peptide-surface combinations show clear trends in adsorption behavior that are dependent on both peptide composition and surface chemistry. These data provide a benchmark experimental data set from which fundamental interactions that govern peptide and protein adsorption behavior can be better understood and compared.

Project description:Effects of heifer feeding regimes on growth characteristics, metabolism, endocrinology, health and subsequent milk yield has been described in several studies. This indicates that nutritional impacts have both short- and long-term effects on the animal’s metabolic regulation. Adipose tissue has an important role in whole-body metabolic regulation, as it is the main site for both lipid synhtesis, storage and mobilization as well as an endocrinologically active organ. However, little is known about bovine adipose metabolism at gene level, and what is done is mostly found in mature cows by means of microarrays. The goal of this study was to apply next-generation RNA sequencing on the adipose tissue of Norwegian Red heifers fed differently, in order to gain knowledge about nutritionally induced regulatory mechanisms in growing dairy cattle. The objectives were to: 1) Describe the differential gene expression in the adipose tissue of heifers fed diets differing in energy and protein content; 2) Describe the long-term changes in adipose gene expression occuring within treatment groups between the experimental feeding period and 6 months after the transition from experimental diets to a similar diet offered to all animals; 3) Identify any post-treatment effects of the experimental feeding as expressed by differential gene expression between treatment groups still present 6 months after the termination of experimental feeding; and 4) To identify candidate genes for further studies on the breeding and feeding for improved feed efficiency and production in the Norwegian Red.

Project description:Sulfurospirillum multivorans is a free-living, physiologically versatile Epsilonproteobacterium able to couple the reductive dehalogenation of chlorinated and brominated ethenes to growth (organohalide respiration). We present proteomic data of S. multivorans grown with different electron donors (formate or pyruvate) and electron acceptors (fumarate, nitrate, or tetrachloroethene [PCE]). To obtain information on the cellular localization of proteins, membrane extracts and soluble fractions were separated before data collection from both fractions. The proteome analysis of S. multivorans was performed by mass spectrometry (nanoLC-MS/MS). Raw data have been deposited at ProteomeXchange, "ProteomeXchange provides globally coordinated proteomics data submission and dissemination" [1], via the PRIDE partner repository with the dataset identifier PRIDE: PXD004011. The data might support further research in organohalide respiration and in the general metabolism of free-living Epsilonproteobacteria. The dataset is associated with a previously published study "Proteomics of the organohalide-respiring Epsilonproteobacterium S. multivorans adapted to tetrachloroethene and other energy substrates" [2].

Project description:We autonomously directed a small quadcopter package delivery Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or "drone" to take off, fly a specified route, and land for a total of 209 flights while varying a set of operational parameters. The vehicle was equipped with onboard sensors, including GPS, IMU, voltage and current sensors, and an ultrasonic anemometer, to collect high-resolution data on the inertial states, wind speed, and power consumption. Operational parameters, such as commanded ground speed, payload, and cruise altitude, were varied for each flight. This large data set has a total flight time of 10 hours and 45 minutes and was collected from April to October of 2019 covering a total distance of approximately 65 kilometers. The data collected were validated by comparing flights with similar operational parameters. We believe these data will be of great interest to the research and industrial communities, who can use the data to improve UAV designs, safety, and energy efficiency, as well as advance the physical understanding of in-flight operations for package delivery drones.

Project description:BackgroundAdolescents are recommended to get 8-10 h of sleep at night, yet more than 80% fail to obtain this goal. Energy drink (ED) consumption has been linked to later bedtime in adolescents. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the potential association between ED consumption and sleep duration, and shuteye latency among adolescents in Norway.MethodsThis study was based on data from 15- to 16-year-old adolescents living in Oppland County in 2017. In total, 1353 adolescents were included in the analysis. Multiple regression models were used to estimate the associations between the frequency of ED consumption with sleep duration, shuteye latency, and getting 8 h of sleep.ResultsForty-six point five percent of the adolescents reported sleeping more than 8 h at night. Those who reported ED consumption at any frequency had significantly shorter sleep duration than those who did not. On average, high consumers of ED (consuming ED ≥ 4 times a week) had 0.95 (95% CI: 0.61, 1.28) hours (i.e., 57 min) less sleep than those who never consumed ED. In addition, high consumers had more than 25 min (95% CI: 13.95, 36.92) longer shuteye period than those who never consumed ED.ConclusionMost ED consumers fail to obtain the recommended 8 h of sleep at night, which could be a consequence of shorter sleep duration and longer shuteye latency. We found a dose-response relationship between frequency of ED consumption and reduced sleep. Yet, the potential long-term effects of both ED consumption and insufficient sleep among adolescents remain unclear.

Project description:Researchers generally agree that communities should participate in the community-based research process, but neither a universally accepted approach to community participation nor a set of guiding principles exists.The Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center was established in 1999 with the support of a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Its partners include a low-income, predominantly African American community, six public agencies, and two other academic institutions. A Community Coalition Board was established to represent the partners. The majority of the board is community members; it serves in a governance rather than an advisory capacity, with the community acting as the senior partner in interactions with the medical school, the agencies, and other academic institutions.The Community Coalition Board developed a set of research priorities and a set of 10 community values, or principles, to guide research. A board committee reviews each protocol to ensure they uphold the values.The Community Coalition Board has been using the values since 1999, and in this article we describe its experience. After an initial period that included some disagreements between researchers and community members on the board, relationships have been good, and protocols have been approved with only minor changes.Although the established community values reflect universally acknowledged principles of research ethics, they also address local concerns. An equal partnership between community members and researchers is most beneficial if the partners can agree on a set of values to govern research.

Project description:While diaspora communities have become more critical of Female Genital Cutting (FGC), there are also trends of continuity. To explore the interplay between continuity and change, I designed a study among Somali migrants in Norway. A team of six Somali research assistants collected data from 72 male and female research participants between 16 and 57 years of age through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The aim of the study was to gather knowledge that could improve interventions among migrant populations. The study findings indicate that the experience of FGC as a practice in transition implies that people have to maneuver between different and partly contradictory social norms. The paper first discusses the contradiction between a strong negative attitude toward FGC and very low engagement. The lack of engagement is explained by the increased privatization of FGC and insecurities due to the transition and disempowerment with regard to challenging the FGC practices of relatives based in countries of origin. Second, the paper explores the contradiction between perceptions of FGC as a disappearing practice and the recognition of trends of continuation. Trends of continuation include those related to perceptions of risk during travel to countries of origin, resistance to defibulation, support for sunna circumcision and insecurities regarding the significance of FGC for marriageability. Thus, despite an almost universally negative attitude toward FGC in the form of infibulation, ongoing changes can, to some extent, hamper further change. This suggests that to ensure further progress in the abandonment of the practice, these complex and interconnected expectations must be addressed.

Project description:The data are related to the research article "Peer effects on restaurant tipping in Norway: An experimental approach [1]". The data stem from a survey experiment performed on students attending the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences in December 2019 and pertain to 709 observations. The key variables are (1) tip amount, (2) peer tipping, (3) bill size, and (4) service quality. The data also contain information on background variables such as previous experience from the service industry, financial situation of respondents, gender, and age. We display the raw data organized in such way that they can be easily downloaded and used directly to either (1) replicate the analyses performed in the related research article, or (2) to run one's own analyses on the topic of interest. The data may also be useful to lecturers teaching students about the key concepts of survey experiments and causal modelling.

Project description:We introduce a simple MODelability Index (MODI) that estimates the feasibility of obtaining predictive QSAR models (correct classification rate above 0.7) for a binary data set of bioactive compounds. MODI is defined as an activity class-weighted ratio of the number of nearest-neighbor pairs of compounds with the same activity class versus the total number of pairs. The MODI values were calculated for more than 100 data sets, and the threshold of 0.65 was found to separate the nonmodelable and modelable data sets.
