Project description:The control of cellular processes by direct electronic interface will facilitate the development of biosensors, synthetic biology, and nanobiotechnology by providing the means to pass information from synthetic to living elements of hybrid systems. To investigate the potential of manipulating cellular gene expression by means of electric current, Escherichia coli cultures were screened for electric current inducible genes using global gene expression profiling. Cells in stationary phase were subjected to a DC current density of 2.5 mA/cm2 for 2 min after which the cells were lysed and the total RNA extracted. Of the 4290 expressed genes in E. coli , 432 genes were found to be significantly differentially expressed at an effective alpha value of 5.8 X 10-6. Of these, 333 genes were induced and 99 repressed. Several genes were verified as differentially expressed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. The set of differentially expressed genes were examined for the presence of regulatory factors, subsidiary regulon genes, and biological function, particularly redox functions. Transcripts for the regulatory proteins fnr, sspB, soxS, oxyR, creB and yeiL were found to be up-regulated, and crp was down regulated. While soxS and oxyR were up-regulated, the downstream genes controlled by these regulatory proteins were not differentially expressed, suggesting that the oxidative stress level of low-current electric exposure is small. Genes controlled by FNR and CRP, many of which have redox function, were found to be differentially expressed suggesting modulation by direct reduction that can only be partially explained as a response to the reducing environment created by the electrolytic generation of H2 at the cathode. Project description:The spin current transmission properties of narrow zigzag graphene nanoribbons (zGNRs) have been the focus of much computational research, investigating the potential application of zGNRs in spintronic devices. Doping, fuctionalization, edge modification, and external electric fields have been studied as methods for spin current control, and the performance of zGNRs initialized in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin states has been modeled. Recent work has shown that precise fabrication of narrow zGNRs is possible, and has addressed long debated questions on their magnetic order and stability. This work has revived interest in the application of antiferromagnetic zGNR configurations in spintronics. A general ab initio analysis of narrow antiferromagnetic zGNR performance under a combination of bias voltage and transverse electric field loading shows that their current transmission characteristics differ sharply from those of their ferromagnetic counterparts. At relatively modest field strengths, both majority and minority spin currents react strongly to the applied field. Analysis of band gaps and current transmission pathways explains the presence of negative differential resistance effects and the development of spatially periodic electron transport structures in these nanoribbons.

Project description:The direct imaging of current density vector distributions in thin films has remained a daring challenge. Here, we report that an inhomogeneous current distribution can be mapped directly by the trajectories of magnetic half-skyrmions driven by an electrical current in Pt/Co/Ta trilayer, using polar magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. The half-skyrmion carries a topological charge of 0.5 due to the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which leads to the half-skyrmion Hall effect. The Hall angle of half-skyrmions is independent of current density and can be reduced to as small as 4° by tuning the thickness of the Co layer. The Hall angle is so small that the elongation path of half-skyrmion approximately delineates the invisible current flow as demonstrated in both a continuous film and a curved track. Our work provides a practical technique to directly map inhomogeneous current distribution even in complex geometries for both fundamental research and industrial applications.

Project description:Image segmentation is a fundamental task in image processing and is still a challenging problem when processing images with high noise, low resolution and intensity inhomogeneity. In this paper, a weighted region-based level set method, which is based on the techniques of local statistical theory, level set theory and curve evolution, is proposed. Specifically, a new weighted pressure force function (WPF) is first presented to flexibly drive the closed contour to shrink or expand outside and inside of the object. Second, a faster and smoother regularization term is added to ensure the stability of the curve evolution and that there is no need for initialization in curve evolution. Third, the WPF is integrated into the region-based level set framework to accelerate the speed of the curve evolution and improve the accuracy of image segmentation. Experimental results on medical and natural images demonstrate that the proposed segmentation model is more efficient and robust to noise than other state-of-the-art models.

Project description:In this article, we introduce a data set concerning electric-power consumption-related features registered in seven main municipalities of Nariño, Colombia, from December 2010 to May 2016. The data set consists of 4427 socio-demographic characteristics, and 7 power-consumption-referred measured values. Data were fully collected by the company Centrales Eléctricas de Nariño (CEDENAR) according to the client consumption records. Power consumption data collection was carried following a manual procedure wherein company workers are in charge of manually registering the readings (measured in kWh) reported by the electric energy meters installed at each housing/building. Released data set is aimed at providing researchers a suitable input for designing and assessing the performance of forecasting, modelling, simulation and optimization approaches applied to electric power consumption prediction and characterization problems. Project description:BACKGROUND:Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising brain modulation technique for several disease conditions. With this technique, some portion of the current penetrates through the scalp to the cortex and modulates cortical excitability, but a recent human cadaver study questions the amount. This insufficient intracerebral penetration of currents may partially explain the inconsistent and mixed results in tDCS studies to date. Experimental validation of a transcranial alternating current stimulation-generated electric field (EF) in vivo has been performed on the cortical (using electrocorticography, ECoG, electrodes), subcortical (using stereo electroencephalography, SEEG, electrodes) and deeper thalamic/subthalamic levels (using DBS electrodes). However, tDCS-generated EF measurements have never been attempted. OBJECTIVE:We aimed to demonstrate that tDCS generates biologically relevant EF as deep as the subthalamic level in vivo. METHODS:Patients with movement disorders who have implanted deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes serve as a natural experimental model for thalamic/subthalamic recordings of tDCS-generated EF. We measured voltage changes from DBS electrodes and body resistance from tDCS electrodes in three subjects while applying direct current to the scalp at 2?mA and 4?mA over two tDCS montages. RESULTS:Voltage changes at the level of deep nuclei changed proportionally with the level of applied current and varied with different tDCS montages. CONCLUSIONS:Our findings suggest that scalp-applied tDCS generates biologically relevant EF. Incorporation of these experimental results may improve finite element analysis (FEA)-based models.

Project description:In India, rice (Oryza sativa L.) is cultivated under a variety of climatic conditions. Due to the fragility of the coastal ecosystem, rice farming in these areas has lagged behind. Salinity coupled with floods has added to this trend. Hence, to prevent genetic erosion, conserving and characterizing the coastal rice, is the need of the hour. This work accessed the genetic variation and population structure among 2,242 rice accessions originating from India's east coast comprising Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, and Tamil Nadu, using 36 SNP markers, and have generated a core set (247 accessions) as well as a mini-core set (30 accessions) of rice germplasm. All the 36 SNP loci were biallelic and 72 alleles found with average two alleles per locus. The genetic relatedness of the total collection was inferred using the un-rooted neighbor-joining tree, which grouped all the genotypes (2,242) into three major clusters. Two groups were obtained with a core set and three groups obtained with a mini core set. The mean PIC value of total collection was 0.24, and those of the core collection and mini core collection were 0.27 and 0.32, respectively. The mean heterozygosity and gene diversity of the overall collection were 0.07 and 0.29, respectively, and the core set and mini core set revealed 0.12 and 0.34, 0.20 and 0.40 values, respectively, representing 99% of distinctiveness in the core and mini core sets. Population structure analysis showed maximum population at K = 4 for total collection and core collection. Accessions were distributed according to their population structure confirmed by PCoA and AMOVA analysis. The identified small and diverse core set panel will be useful in allele mining for biotic and abiotic traits and managing the genetic diversity of the coastal rice collection. Validation of the 36-plex SNP assay was done by comparing the genetic diversity parameters across two different rice core collections, i.e., east coast and northeast rice collection. The same set of SNP markers was found very effective in deciphering diversity at different genetic parameters in both the collections; hence, these marker sets can be utilized for core development and diversity analysis studies.

Project description:Label-free and real-time single-molecule detection may aid the development of high-throughput biosensing platforms. Molecular fluctuations are a source of noise that often hinders single-molecule identification by obscuring the fine details of molecular identity. In this study, we report molecular identification through direct observation of quantum-fluctuation-induced inelastic noise in single organic molecules. We investigated current fluctuations flowing through a single molecule that is chemically connected to two electrodes. We found increased current oscillations synchronous to electric field excitations of characteristic molecular vibrational modes that contribute to inelastic electron tunnelling. This finding demonstrates a large contribution of charge interaction with nuclear dynamics on noise properties of single-molecule bridges and suggests a potential use of inelastic noise as a valuable molecular signature for single-molecule identification.
