A data set for electric power consumption forecasting based on socio-demographic features: Data from an area of southern Colombia.

ABSTRACT: In this article, we introduce a data set concerning electric-power consumption-related features registered in seven main municipalities of Nariño, Colombia, from December 2010 to May 2016. The data set consists of 4427 socio-demographic characteristics, and 7 power-consumption-referred measured values. Data were fully collected by the company Centrales Eléctricas de Nariño (CEDENAR) according to the client consumption records. Power consumption data collection was carried following a manual procedure wherein company workers are in charge of manually registering the readings (measured in kWh) reported by the electric energy meters installed at each housing/building. Released data set is aimed at providing researchers a suitable input for designing and assessing the performance of forecasting, modelling, simulation and optimization approaches applied to electric power consumption prediction and characterization problems. The data set, so-named in shorthand PCSTCOL, is freely and publicly available at https://doi.org/10.17632/xbt7scz5ny.3.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Breakfast is an important meal that provides essential nutrients and energy. However, few comprehensive studies have reported breakfast habits and related behaviors among Saudi children. This study investigated breakfast consumption patterns and the associations of socio-demographic variables with daily breakfast intake among Saudi children. METHODS:A multistage stratified cluster random sampling technique was used to select 1051 elementary school boys and girls in Riyadh. Body weight and height were measured and body mass index (BMI) was computed. The breakfast eating habits and behaviors were assessed using a specifically designed self-reported questionnaire that was completed by the children's parents. RESULTS:More than 79% of children skipped daily breakfast, with no significant sex difference. Children in private schools consumed breakfast more frequently than those attending public schools. Multivariate analyses showed that boys in private schools had a significantly higher intake of breakfast than that in boys in public schools, yet, boys in public schools had significantly higher BMI than boys in private schools. Using logistic regression while adjusting for confounders showed insignificant effect for parent education. Among breakfast eaters, spread cheese sandwiches were consumed most frequently, followed by fried egg sandwiches and breakfast cereals. Full-fat milk, tea with milk, water, and fruit juice were the most consumed drinks. Girls consumed significantly more fresh fruits during breakfast than did boys. Mothers prepared breakfast at home most of the time (84.5%). Parents appeared mostly satisfied with the breakfast consumed by their child at home and placed high importance on breakfast compared to lunch or dinner. CONCLUSIONS:The proportion of school children who ate daily breakfast at home was low, which may have implications for children's school performance. Effort is needed to promote daily breakfast consumption among Saudi school children and to introduce appropriate interventions aimed at promoting daily breakfast consumption among Saudi children.

Project description:BackgroundInformed decision making is underlined by all tiers in the health system. Poor data record system coupled with under- (over)-reporting of malaria cases affects the country's malaria elimination activities. Thus, malaria data at health facilities and health offices are important particularly to monitor and evaluate the elimination progresses. This study was intended to assess overall reported malaria cases, reporting quality, spatiotemporal trends and factors associated in Gedeo zone, South Ethiopia.MethodsPast 8 years retrospective data stored in 17 health centers and 5 district health offices in Gedeo Zone, South Ethiopia were extracted. Malaria cases data at each health center with sociodemographic information, between January 2012 and December 2019, were included. Meteorological data were obtained from the national meteorology agency of Ethiopia. The data were analyzed using Stata 13.ResultsA total of 485,414 suspected cases were examined for malaria during the previous 8 years at health centers. Of these suspects, 57,228 (11.79%) were confirmed malaria cases with an overall decline during the 8-year period. We noted that 3758 suspected cases and 467 confirmed malaria cases were not captured at the health offices. Based on the health centers records, the proportions of Plasmodium falciparum (49.74%) and P. vivax (47.59%) infection were nearly equivalent (p = 0.795). The former was higher at low altitudes while the latter was higher at higher altitudes. The over 15 years of age group accounted for 11.47% of confirmed malaria cases (p < 0.001). There was high spatiotemporal variation: the highest case record was during Belg (12.52%) and in Dilla town (18,150, 13.17%, p < 0.001) which is located at low altitude. Monthly rainfall and minimum temperature exhibited strong associations with confirmed malaria cases.ConclusionA notable overall decline in malaria cases was observed during the eight-year period. Both P. falciparum and P. vivax were found at equivalent endemicity level; hence control measures should continue targeting both species. The noticed under reporting, the high malaria burden in urban settings, low altitudes and Belg season need spatiotemporal consideration by the elimination program.

Project description:Reliable statistics on maternal morbidity and mortality are scarce in low and middle-income countries, especially in rural areas. This is the case in Mozambique where many births happen at home. Furthermore, a sizeable number of facility births have inadequate registration. Such information is crucial for developing effective national and global health policies for maternal and child health. The aim of this study was to generate reliable baseline socio-demographic information on women of reproductive age as well as to establish a demographic surveillance platform to support the planning and implementation of the Community Level Intervention for Pre-eclampsia (CLIP) study, a cluster randomized controlled trial. This study represents a census of all women of reproductive age (12-49 years) in twelve rural communities in Maputo and Gaza provinces of Mozambique. The data were collected through electronic forms implemented in Open Data Kit (ODK) (an app for android based tablets) and household and individual characteristics. Verbal autopsies were conducted on all reported maternal deaths to determine the underlying cause of death. Between March and October 2014, 50,493 households and 80,483 women of reproductive age (mean age 26.9 years) were surveyed. A total of 14,617 pregnancies were reported in the twelve months prior to the census, resulting in 9,029 completed pregnancies. Of completed pregnancies, 8,796 resulted in live births, 466 resulted in stillbirths and 288 resulted in miscarriages. The remaining pregnancies had not yet been completed during the time of the survey (5,588 pregnancies). The age specific fertility indicates that highest rate (188 live births per 1,000 women) occurs in the age 20-24 years old. The estimated stillbirth rate was 50.3/1,000 live and stillbirths; neonatal mortality rate was 13.3/1,000 live births and maternal mortality ratio was 204.6/100,000 live births. The most common direct cause of maternal death was eclampsia and tuberculosis was the most common indirect cause of death. This study found that fertility rate is high at age 20-24 years old. Pregnancy in the advanced age (>35 years of age) in this study was associated with higher poor outcomes such as miscarriage and stillbirth. The study also found high stillbirth rate indicating a need for increased attention to maternal health in southern Mozambique. Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are prominent indirect causes of maternal death, while eclampsia represents the number one direct obstetric cause of maternal deaths in these communities. Additional efforts to promote safe motherhood and improve child survival are crucial in these communities.

Project description:In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended scaling up of routine viral load (VL) monitoring for patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in resource-limited settings [1]. During the transition phase from no VL-testing at all to routine VL-monitoring, targeted VL for groups at particular risk of virologic failure (VF) may be an option [2]. We present socio-demographic and clinical risk factors for VF in a cohort in rural Lesotho with no access to VL prior to the study.Data derive from a cross-sectional study providing multi-disease screening as well as VL testing to adult patients (?16 years old) on first-line ART ?6 months [3]. VF was defined as VL?1000 copies/mL. Assessed potential predictors of VF were: (1) socio-demographic (sex, age, wealth-quintile, education, employment status, disclosure of HIV status to environment, travel-time to facility); (2) treatment history (history of treatment interruption >2 days, previous drug substitution within first-line ART, time on ART, ART-base and -backbone); (3) adherence (pill count) and (4) clinical (clinical or immunological failure as defined by WHO guidelines [1], presence of papular pruritic eruption (PPE)). All variables with association to VF in univariate analysis were included in a multivariate logistic regression reporting adjusted Odds ratios (aOR).Data from 1,488 patients were analyzed. Overall VF-prevalence was 6.9% (95% CI 5.7-8.3). In univariate analysis, the following were associated with VF: age <30, lower wealth-quintile, no primary education, history of treatment interruption, nevirapine-base, zidovudine-backbone, history of drug substitution, travel-time to clinic ?2 hours, disclosure of HIV status to <5 persons, clinical failure, presence of PPE and immunological failure. In multivariate analysis, 6 out of the above 12 variables were independent predictors: age <30 years (aOR: 2.4; 95% CI 1.1-5.3, p=0.029), history of treatment interruption (2.5; 1.3-4.7, p=0.005), PPE (6.9; 2.5-18.9, p<0.001), immunological failure (11.5; 5.7-23.2, p<0.001), history of drug substitution (1.9; 1.0-3.7, p=0.043), disclosure of HIV status to <5 persons (1.8; 1.1-3.1, p=0.03).In this cohort in rural Lesotho, several socio-demographic and clinical predictors were associated with VF. Particularly age <30 years, history of treatment interruption, PPE and immunological failure were strongly associated with VF. These patients may be prioritized for targeted VL-testing.

Project description:IntroductionThe main preventive measure against dengue virus transmission is often based on actions to control Ae. Aegypti reproduction by targeting water containers of clean and stagnant water. Household water storage has received special attention in prevention strategies but the evidence about the rationale of this human practice is limited. The objective was to identify and describe water storage practices among residents of an urban area in Colombia (Girardot) and its association with reported perceptions, rationales and socio-demographic characteristics with a mixed methods approach.MethodsKnowledge, attitudes and practices and entomological surveys from 1,721 households and 26 semi-structured interviews were conducted among residents of Girardot and technicians of the local vector borne disease program. A multivariate analysis was performed to identify associations between a water storage practice and socio-demographic characteristics, and knowledge, attitudes and practices about dengue and immature forms of the vector, which were then triangulated with qualitative information.ResultsWater storage is a cultural practice in Girardot. There are two main reasons for storage: The scarcity concern based on a long history of shortages of water in the region and the perception of high prices in water rates, contrary to what was reported by the local water company. The practice of water storage was associated with being a housewife (Inverse OR: 2.6, 95% CI 1.5 -4.3). The use of stored water depends on the type of container used, while water stored in alberca (Intra household cement basins) is mainly used for domestic cleaning chores, water in plastic containers is used for cooking.ConclusionsIt is essential to understand social practices that can increase or reduce the number of breeding sites of Ae. Aegypti. Identification of individuals who store water and the rationale of such storage allow a better understanding of the social dynamics that lead to water accumulation.
