Complete mitochondrial genome of the six-line wrasse Pseudocheilinus hexataenia (Labriformes, Labridae).

ABSTRACT: Here, we report the complete mitogenome information of the six-line wrasse Pseudocheilinus hexataenia (Bleeker, 1857). Genome sequencing using the Illumina HiSeq platform allowed the assembly of a circular mitochondrial genome of 17,111 bp from P. hexataenia, consisting of 54% AT nucleotides, 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and a putative control region in the typical Labriformes gene composition. The gene order of the P. hexataenia mitochondrion was identical to that of the Labridae mitogenomes. Phylogenetic reconstruction places P. hexataenia with a close relationship with the mitogenome of the goldsinny wrasse, Ctenolabrus rupestris.

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of orangeline wrasse Halichoeres hartzfeldii (Bleeker, 1852) with the phylogenetic relationships within the Labridae species.

Project description:The mitogenome of Halichoeres hartzfeldii is 16,481 bp in length. It consists of 37 typical vertebrate mitochondrial genes including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and a control region (D-loop). The orientation and arrangement of these genes is similar to that of the other sequenced Labridae mitogenome. The overall base composition of the mitogenome of H. hartzfeldii is biased towards A +T content at 52.9%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 13 concatenated PCGs nucleotide sequences indicated that the genome of H. hartzfeldii is closely related to the genus Halichoeres.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Cheilio inermis (Labriformes, Labridae).

Project description:In the present report, we describe the first sequencing and assembly of the complete mitochondrial genome of Cheilio inermis. The mitochondrial genome of C. inermis, with 16,494 bp in length, has the typical vertebrate mitochondrial gene arrangement. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and a control region. All the tRNA genes typically formed a cloverleaf secondary structure. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 11 species showed that C. inermis formed monophyletic group with other Labridae species.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Cheilinus oxycephalus (Perciformes: Labridae).

Project description:Cheilinus oxycephalus is a marine fish species, belonging to the family Labridae and naturally distributed in Indo-Pacific waters. We obtained the first complete mitochondrial genome of this species using next-generation sequencing technology. This genome is 17,698?bp, and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and a D-loop region. These genes are mostly encoded on the heavy strand except for ND6 and eight tRNA genes. The AT content is 52.32%. These characteristics are similar to other bony fish. This mitochondrial genome would be used as a resource for phylogenetic reconstruction.

Project description:Thalassoma lunare is one of most important genera of Labridae. However, the systemically classification and taxonomic studies have so far been limited. In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of T. lunare. The mitogenome has 17,073 base pairs (57.7% A + T content) and made up of total of 37 genes (13 protein-coding, 22 transfer RNAs and 2 ribosomal RNAs), and a putative control region. This study will provide useful genetic information for future phylogenetic and taxonomic classification of Labridae.

Complete mitochondrial genome of six Cheilinus undulatus (Napoleon Wrasse): an endangered marine fish species from Sabah, Malaysia.

Project description:We report here the complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes of six individuals of Cheilinus undulatus (Napoleon Wrasse), an endangered marine fish species. The six mt DNA sequences had an average size of 17,000?kb and encoded 22 tRNA, two sRNA, 13 highly conserved protein coding genes and a control region. The polymorphic variation (control region) in these six individuals suggests their potential use as a specific marker for phylogeographic conservation. Moreover, the sequence polymorphism within the control region (D-loop) suggests that this locus can be applied for phylogenetic studies.

The genome is 17,252 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes and one large non-coding region. The gene arrangement of Halichoeres nigrescens is identical to that of common fishes. Phylogenetic tree based on 13 protein-coding genes shows that Halichoeres nigrescens has a closer phylogenetic relationship to Macropharyngodon negrosensis than to Halichoeres hartzfeldii.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the pearly razorfish Xyrichtys novacula: phylogenetic analysis of its placement within the Labridae family.

Project description:In this paper, we report the complete mitochondrial genome (17,306 bp) of the pearly razorfish Xyrichtys novacula Linnaeus, 1758, a labrid that inhabits tropical and temperate Atlantic waters and the Mediterranean Sea. The circular double-stranded sequence contains the typical teleost gene order with 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA, 2 rRNA, 1 control region, and 2 intergenic spacers between the rRNAs. Using the sequences of all protein-coding genes, we inferred the phylogeny for the Labriade family using 24 labrids and 3 outgroup species that placed X. novacula in a monophyletic group including species from the Pseudocheilines, Pseudolabrines, and Julidines.

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of the coral reef fish, Hemigymnus melapterus (Pisces: Labridae) and its phylogenetic implications.

Project description:Hemigymnus melapterus belongs to the family Labridae, which inhabit in coastal and continental shelf waters. The entire mitochondrial genome of H. melapterus is 16,527 base pairs (bp) in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. The overall base composition is 27.56% A, 25.58% T, 30.02% C, and 16.85% G, showing AT-rich feature (53.14%). Phylogenetic analysis based on 13 protein-coding genes shows the H. melapterus has the closest evolutionary relationship with Stethojulis strigiventer. This work provides valuable genome variation information, which will be useful for phylogenetic analysis and population genetics research.

Cirrhilabruswakanda, a new species of fairy wrasse from mesophotic ecosystems of Zanzibar, Tanzania, Africa (Teleostei, Labridae).

Project description:Cirrhilabruswakanda sp. nov. is described on the basis of the holotype and four paratypes collected between 50 and 80m depth over low-complexity reef and rubble bottoms at the east coast of Zanzibar, Tanzania, Africa. The new species belongs to a group of fairy wrasses from the western Indian Ocean, sharing a combination of characters that include: short pelvic fins (not or barely reaching anal-fin origin); relatively unmarked dorsal and anal fins; males with a strongly lanceolate caudal fin (except in C.rubrisquamis); both sexes with a pair of prominent facial stripes above and below the orbit; and both sexes with prominent purple scales and osseus elements that persist, and stain purple, respectively, even in preservation. This group of fairy wrasse is part of a larger complex that includes related species from the western Pacific Ocean. In addition to meristic and morphometric comparisons, we also compare mitochondrial DNA sequence data to the aforementioned, putatively related species.
