Dataset of propylene carbonate based liquid electrolyte mixtures for sodium-ion cells.

ABSTRACT: In this manuscript, we present rheology, ionic conductivity, density, chromatography, and life cycle analysis data on the PC+X electrolyte system with and without LiClO₄. In particular, the data are presented in contact with Na surfaces. In this case, photographic images of electrolyte-sodium mixtures are also shown. The data was analyzed using OriginPro software to visualize it in an appropriate manner. In our view, the data serve as comparative values, form a basis of a chromatography analysis and are also valuable for modeling. The analysis of the data is presented in the manuscript "Comprehensive characterization of propylene carbonate based liquid electrolyte mixtures for sodium-ion cells" [1].

First-principles study of sodium adsorption on defective graphene under propylene carbonate electrolyte conditions.

Project description:Hard carbon (HC) has been predominantly used as a typical anode material of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) but its sodiation mechanism has been debated. In this work, we investigate the adsorption of Na atoms on defective graphene under propylene carbonate (PC) and water solvent as well as vacuum conditions to clarify the sodiation mechanism of HC. Within the joint density functional theory framework, we use the nonlinear polarizable continuum model for PC and the charge-asymmetric nonlocally-determined local electric solvation model for water. Our calculations reveal that the centre of each point defect such as mono-vacancy (MV), di-vacancy (DV) and Stone-Wales is a preferable adsorption site and the electrolyte enhances the Na adsorption through implicit interaction. Furthermore, we calculate the formation energies of multiple Na atom arrangements on the defective graphene and estimate the electrode potential versus Na/Na+, verifying that the multiple Na adsorption on the MV and DV defective graphene under the PC electrolyte conditions is related to the slope region of the discharge curve in HC. This reveals new prospects for optimizing anodes and electrolytes for high performance SIBs.

The data and analyses presented here include fitted data for density measurements, temperature dependence of density and specific volume of the mixtures, detailed viscosity measurements and conductivity data, current density plots with respect to anodic aluminum dissolution, half-cell C-rate capability of mixtures with the additives used in research article as well as the SEM images and EDX data of the full-cell with the electrolyte selected and controlled.

Improving Cyclability of All-Solid-State Batteries via Stabilized Electrolyte-Electrode Interface with Additive in Poly(propylene carbonate) Based Solid Electrolyte.

Project description:In this study, tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME) is demonstrated as an effective additive in poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) polymers for the enhancement of ionic conductivity and interfacial stability and a tissue membrane is used as a backbone to maintain the mechanical strength of the solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). TEGDME in the PPC allows the uniform distribution of conductive LiF species throughout the cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer which plays a critically important role in the formation of a stable and efficient CEI. In addition, the high modulus of SPEs suppresses the formation of a protrusion-type CEI on the cathode. The SPE with the optimized TEGDME content exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 0.89 mS cm-1 , an adequate potential stability of up to 4.89 V, and a high Li-ion transference number of 0.81 at 60 °C. Moreover, the Li/SPE/Li cell demonstrates excellent cycling stability for 1650 h, and the Li/SPE/LFP full cell exhibits an initial reversible capacity of 103 mAh g-1 and improved stability over 500 cycles at a rate of 1 C. The TEGDME additive improves the electrochemical properties of the SPEs and promotes the creation of a stable interface, which is crucial for ASSLIBs.

High-Mass Loading Hierarchically Porous Activated Carbon Electrode for Pouch-Type Supercapacitors with Propylene Carbonate-Based Electrolyte.

Project description:Rational design and development of the electrodes with high-mass loading yet maintaining the excellent electrochemical properties are significant for a variety of electrochemical energy storage applications. In comparison with the slurry-casted electrode, herein, a hierarchically porous activated carbon (HPAC) electrode with higher mass loading (8.3 ± 0.2 mg/cm2) is successfully prepared. The pouch-type symmetric device (1 cell) with the propylene carbonate-based electrolyte shows the rate capability (7.1 F at 1 mA/cm2 and 4.8 F at 10 mA/cm2) and the cycling stability (83% at 12,000 cycles). On the other hand, an initial discharge capacitance of 32.4 F and the capacitance retention of 96% after 30,000 cycles are delivered from a pouch-type symmetric supercapacitor (five cells). The corresponding electrochemical performances are attributed to the fascinating properties of the HPAC and the synergistic features of the resulting electrode.

A Non-Flammable Zwitterionic Ionic Liquid/Ethylene Carbonate Mixed Electrolyte for Lithium-Ion Battery with Enhanced Safety.

Project description:Today, the requirement for clean, highly efficient, and safe energy seems to be higher and higher due to non-renewable energy and pollution of the environment. At this moment, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) look like a reliable solution for this dilemma since they have huge energy density. However, the flammability of the conventional electrolyte used in the LIBs is one of critical disadvantages of LIBs, which compromises the safety issue of LIBs. Herein, we reported a non-flammable zwitterionic ionic liquid-based electrolyte named TLPEC, which was fabricated by simply mixing a novel zwitterionic ionic liquid TLP (93 wt%) and ethylene carbonate (EC, 7 wt%). The TLPEC electrolyte exhibited a wide electrochemical potential window of 1.65-5.10 V and a robust ionic conductivity of 1.0 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 20 °C, which renders TLPEC to be a suitable electrolyte for LIBs with enhanced safety performance. The LIBs, with TLPEC as the electrolyte, exhibited an excellent performance in terms of excellent rate capability, cycling stability, and high specific capacity at 25 and 60 °C, which were attributed to the stability and high ionic conductivity of TLPEC electrolyte during cycling as well as the excellent interface compatibility of TLPEC electrolyte with lithium anode.

A Safer Sodium-Ion Battery Based on Nonflammable Organic Phosphate Electrolyte.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries are now considered as a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion technologies for large-scale energy storage applications; however, their safety is still a matter of great concern for practical applications. In this paper, a safer sodium-ion battery is proposed by introducing a nonflammable phosphate electrolyte (trimethyl phosphate, TMP) coupled with NaNi0.35Mn0.35Fe0.3O2 cathode and Sb-based alloy anode. The physical and electrochemical compatibilities of the TMP electrolyte are investigated by igniting, ionic conductivity, cyclic voltammetry, and charge-discharge measurements. The results exhibit that the TMP electrolyte with FEC additive is completely nonflammable and has wide electrochemical window (0-4.5 V vs. Na/Na+), in which both the Sb-based anode and NaNi0.35Mn0.35Fe0.3O2 cathode show high reversible capacity and cycling stability, similarly as in carbonate electrolyte. Based on these results, a nonflammable sodium-ion battery is constructed by use of Sb anode, NaNi0.35Mn0.35Fe0.3O2 cathode, and TMP + 10 vol% FEC electrolyte, which works very well with considerable capacity and cyclability, demonstrating a promising prospect to build safer sodium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications.

Sodium Borates: Expanding the Electrolyte Selection for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are a promising grid-level storage technology due to the abundance and low cost of sodium. The development of new electrolytes for SIBs is imperative since it impacts battery life and capacity. Currently, sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6 ) is used as the benchmark salt, but is highly hygroscopic and generates toxic HF. This work describes the synthesis of a series of sodium borate salts, with electrochemical studies revealing that Na[B(hfip)4 ]⋅DME (hfip=hexafluoroisopropyloxy, Oi PrF ) and Na[B(pp)2 ] (pp=perfluorinated pinacolato, O2 C2 (CF3 )4 ) have excellent electrochemical performance. The [B(pp)2 ]- anion also exhibits a high tolerance to air and water. Both electrolytes give more stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces than conventionally used NaPF6 , as demonstrated by impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, they give greater cycling stability and comparable capacity to NaPF6 for SIBs, as shown in commercial pouch cells.

Opportunities and Limitations of Ionic Liquid- and Organic Carbonate Solvent-Based Electrolytes for Mg-Ion-Based Dual-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) offer a great alternative to state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries, based on their high promises due to the absence of transition metals and the use of low-cost materials, which could make them economically favorable targeting stationary energy storage applications. In addition, they are not limited by certain metal cations, and DIBs with a broad variety of utilized ions could be demonstrated over the last years. Herein, a systematic study of different electrolyte approaches for Mg-ion-based DIBs was conducted. A side-by-side comparison of Li- and Mg-ion-based electrolytes using activated carbon as negative electrode revealed the opportunities but also limitations of Mg-ion-based DIBs. Ethylene sulfite was successfully introduced as electrolyte additive and increased the specific discharge capacity significantly up to 93±2 mAh g-1 with coulombic efficiencies over 99 % and an excellent capacity retention of 88 % after 400 cycles. In addition, and for the first time, highly concentrated carbonate-based electrolytes were employed for Mg-ion-based DIBs, showing adequate discharge capacities and high coulombic efficiencies.

A safe and non-flammable sodium metal battery based on an ionic liquid electrolyte.

Project description:Rechargeable sodium metal batteries with high energy density could be important to a wide range of energy applications in modern society. The pursuit of higher energy density should ideally come with high safety, a goal difficult for electrolytes based on organic solvents. Here we report a chloroaluminate ionic liquid electrolyte comprised of aluminium chloride/1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride/sodium chloride ionic liquid spiked with two important additives, ethylaluminum dichloride and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide. This leads to the first chloroaluminate based ionic liquid electrolyte for rechargeable sodium metal battery. The obtained batteries reached voltages up to ~ 4 V, high Coulombic efficiency up to 99.9%, and high energy and power density of ~ 420 Wh kg-1 and ~ 1766 W kg-1, respectively. The batteries retained over 90% of the original capacity after 700 cycles, suggesting an effective approach to sodium metal batteries with high energy/high power density, long cycle life and high safety.

A Bifunctional Fluorophosphate Electrolyte for Safer Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Most of the currently developed sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have potential safety hazards due to the use of highly volatile and flammable alkyl carbonate electrolytes. To overcome this challenge, we report an electrochemically compatible and nonflammable electrolyte, tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate (TFEP) with low-concentration sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (0.9 M), which is designed not only to match perfectly with the hard carbon (HC) anode but also to enhance the thermal stability of SIBs. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that TFEP molecules have a significantly low barrier to decompose before Na+ inserts into HC, forming a stable inorganic solid-electrolyte interface layer, thus improving the electrochemical and structural stabilities of HC anodes. An HC/Na3V2(PO4)3 full cell using TFEP electrolyte shows a high capacity retention of 89.2% after 300 cycles and a dramatically reduced exothermic heat at elevated temperature, implying its potential application for safe and low-cost larger-scale energy storage.
