New Aptamer/MoS2/Ni-Fe LDH Photoelectric Sensor for Bisphenol A Determination.

ABSTRACT: Here, a new type of PEC aptamer sensor for bisphenol A (BPA) detection was developed, in which visible-light active MoS2/Ni-Fe LDH (layered double hydroxide) heterostructure and aptamer were used as photosensitive materials and biometric elements, respectively. The combination of an appropriate amount of MoS2 and Ni-Fe LDH enhances the photocurrent response, thereby promoting the construction of the PEC sensor. Therefore, we used a simple in situ growth method to fabricate a MoS2/Ni-Fe LDH sensor to detect the BPA content. The aptasensor based on aptamer/MoS2/Ni-Fe LDH displayed a linear range toward a BPA of 0.05-10 to 50-40,000 ng L-1, and it has excellent stability, selectivity and reproducibility. In addition, the proposed aptamer sensor is effective in evaluating real water samples, indicating that it has great potential for detecting BPA in real samples.

A Photoelectric-Stimulated MoS2 Transistor for Neuromorphic Engineering.

Project description:The von Neumann bottleneck has spawned the rapid expansion of neuromorphic engineering and brain-like networks. Synapses serve as bridges for information transmission and connection in the biological nervous system. The direct implementation of neural networks may depend on novel materials and devices that mimic natural neuronal and synaptic behavior. By exploiting the interfacial effects between MoS2 and AlOx, we demonstrate that an h-BN-encapsulated MoS2 artificial synapse transistor can mimic the basic synaptic behaviors, including EPSC, PPF, LTP, and LTD. Efficient optoelectronic spikes enable simulation of synaptic gain, frequency, and weight plasticity. The Pavlov classical conditioning experiment was successfully simulated by electrical tuning, showing associated learning behavior. In addition, h-BN encapsulation effectively improves the environmental time stability of our devices. Our h-BN-encapsulated MoS2 artificial synapse provides a new paradigm for hardware implementation of neuromorphic engineering.

Ce-Doped Three-Dimensional Ni/Fe LDH Composite as a Sulfur Host for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have become the most promising choice in the new generation of energy storage/conversion equipment due to their high theoretical capacity of 1675 mAh g-1 and theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh kg-1. Nevertheless, the continuous shuttling of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) restricts the commercial application of LSBs. The appearance of layered double hydroxides (LDH) plays a certain role in the anchoring of LiPSs, but its unsatisfactory electronic conductivity and poor active sites hinder its realization as a sulfur host for high-performance LSBs. In this paper, metal organic framework-derived and Ce ion-doped LDH (Ce-Ni/Fe LDH) with a hollow capsule configuration is designed rationally. The hollow structure of Ce-Ni/Fe LDH contains a sufficient amount of sulfur. Fe, Ni, and Ce metal ions effectively trap LiPSs; speed up the conversion of LiPSs; and firmly anchor LiPSs, thus effectively inhibiting the shuttle of LiPSs. The electrochemical testing results demonstrate that a lithium-sulfur battery with capsule-type S@Ce-Ni/Fe LDH delivers the initial discharge capacities of 1207 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and 1056 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C, respectively. Even at 1 C, a lithium-sulfur battery with S@Ce-Ni/Fe LDH can also cycle 1000 times. This work provides new ideas to enhance the electrochemical properties of LSBs by constructing a hollow capsule configuration.

MWCNT modified Ni-Fe LDH/BiVO4 heterojunction: boosted visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical aptasensor for ofloxacin detection.

Project description:Sensitivity and selectivity, which can be identified by the photosensitivity of materials and the identification of elements, are two important factors for a photoelectrochemical aptasensor (PEC aptasensor). Herein, a patent PEC aptasensor for specifically detecting ofloxacin (OFL) was exploited, and a visible-light-active MWCNT/LDH/BiVO4 heterostructure was introduced as a photoactive material and identification elements, respectively. The combination of LDH with BiVO4 enhanced the photocurrent response, and MWCNT provided higher electron conductivity, which are advantageous for structuring PEC sensors. Furthermore, the two-pot synthesis of MWCNT/LDH/BiVO4 has the advantage of possessing an environmentally friendly character. Under optimal conditions, the photocurrent response of MWCNT/LDH/BiVO4 presents a linear trend with OFL concentration from 0.1 to 16 000 nM, and the limit of detection (S/N = 3) is as low as 0.03 nM. This new PEC sensing device afforded an ultra-sensitive sensor which has high selectivity and stability for detecting OFL.

Study on the Performance of Ni-MoS2 Catalysts with Different MoS2 Structures for Dibenzothiophene Hydrodesulfurization.

Project description:Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is an important process for the production of clean fuel oil, and the development of a new environmentally friendly, low-cost sulfided catalyst is key research in hydrogenation technology. Herein, commercial bulk MoS2 and NiCO3·2NiOH2·4H2O were first hydrothermally treated and then calcined in a H2 or N2 atmosphere to obtain Ni-MoS2 HDS catalysts with different structures. Mechanisms of hydrothermal treatment and calcination on Ni-MoS2 catalyst structures were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic performance of Ni-MoS2 catalysts was evaluated by the HDS reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT) on a fixed bed reactor, and the structure-activity relationship between the structures of the Ni-MoS2 catalyst and the HDS of DBT was discussed. The results showed that the lateral size, the number of stacked layers, and the S/Mo atomic ratio of MoS2 in the catalyst decreased and then increased with the increase of the hydrothermal treatment temperature, reaching the minimum at the hydrothermal treatment temperature of 150 °C, i.e., the lateral size of MoS2 in the catalyst was 20-36 nm, the number of stacked layers of MoS2 was 5.4, and the S/Mo ratio in the catalyst was 1.80. In addition, the effects of different calcination temperatures and calcination atmospheres on the catalyst structures were investigated at the optimum hydrothermal treatment temperature. The Ni-Mo-S and NixSy ratios of the catalysts increased and then decreased with the increasing calcination temperature under a H2 atmosphere, reaching a maximum at a calcination temperature of 400 °C. Therefore, DBT exhibited the best HDS activity over the H-NiMo-150-400 catalyst, and the desulfurization rate of DBT reached 94.7% at a reaction temperature of 320 °C.

Experimental Determination of Partitioning in the Fe-Ni System for Applications to Modeling Meteoritic Metals.

Project description:Experimental trace element partitioning values are often used to model the chemical evolution of metallic phases in meteorites, but limited experimental data were previously available to constrain the partitioning behavior in the basic Fe-Ni system. In this study, we conducted experiments that produced equilibrium solid metal and liquid metal phases in the Fe-Ni system and measured the partition coefficients of 25 elements. The results are in good agreement with values modeled from IVB iron meteorites and with the limited previous experimental data. Additional experiments with low levels of S and P were also conducted, to help constrain the partitioning behaviors of elements as a function of these light elements. The new experimental results were used to derive a set of parameterization values for element solid metal-liquid metal partitioning behavior in the Fe-Ni-S, Fe-Ni-P, and Fe-Ni-C ternary systems at 0.1 MPa. The new parameterizations require that the partitioning behaviors in the light-element-free Fe-Ni system are those determined experimentally by this study, in contrast to previous parameterizations that allowed this value to be determined as a best-fit parameter. These new parameterizations, with self-consistent values for partitioning in the end-member Fe-Ni system, provide a valuable resource for future studies that model the chemical evolution of metallic phases in meteorites.

Design and fabrication of electrochemical sensor based on NiO/Ni@C-Fe3O4/CeO2 for the determination of niclosamide.

Project description:In this study, we aimed to enhance and accelerate the electrochemical properties of a glassy carbon-based voltammetric sensor electrode. This was achieved through the modification of the electrode using a nanocomposite derived from a metal-organic framework, which was embedded onto a substrate consisting of metal oxide nanoparticles. The final product was an electrocatalyst denoted as NiO/Ni@C-Fe3O4/CeO2, tailored for the detection of the drug niclosamide. Several techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, TEM, and EDS, were employed to characterize the structure and morphology of this newly formed electroactive catalyst. Subsequently, the efficiency of this electrocatalyst was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Differential pulse voltammetry was also utilized to achieve heightened sensitivity and selectivity. A comprehensive exploration of key factors such as the catalyst quantity, optimal instrumental parameters, scan rate influence, and pH effect was undertaken, revealing a well-regulated reaction process. Furthermore, the sensor's analytical performance parameters were determined. This included establishing the linear detection range for the target compound within a specified concentration interval of 2.92 nM to 4.97 μM. The detection limit of 0.91 nM, repeatability of 3.1%, and reproducibility of 4.8% of the sensor were calculated, leading to the observation of favorable stability characteristics. Conclusively, the developed electrochemical sensor was successfully employed for the quantification of niclosamide in urine samples and niclosamide tablets. This application highlighted not only the sensor's high selectivity but also the satisfactory and accurate outcomes obtained from these measurements.

Photoelectric Characteristics of a Large-Area n-MoS2/p-Si Heterojunction Structure Formed through Sulfurization Process.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) of the transition metal dichalcogenides family, are widely investigated because of their outstanding electrical and optical properties. However, not much of the 2D materials research completed to date has covered large-area structures comprised of high-quality heterojunction diodes. We fabricated a large-area n-MoS2/p-Si heterojunction structure by sulfurization of MoOx film, which is thermally evaporated on p-type silicon substrate. The n-MoS2/p-Si structure possessed excellent diode characteristics such as ideality factor of 1.53 and rectification ratio in excess of 104. Photoresponsivity and detectivity of the diode showed up to 475 mA/W and 6.5 × 1011 Jones, respectively, in wavelength ranges from visible to near-infrared. The device appeared also the maximum external quantum efficiency of 72%. The rise and decay times of optical transient response were measured about 19.78 ms and 0.99 ms, respectively. These results suggest that the sulfurization process for large-area 2D heterojunction with MoS2 can be applicable to next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices.

A Novel Fluorescent Sensor Based on Aptamer and qPCR for Determination of Glyphosate in Tap Water.

Project description:Glyphosate (GLYP) is a broad-spectrum, nonselective, organic phosphine postemergence herbicide registered for many food and nonfood fields. Herein, we developed a biosensor (Mbs@dsDNA) based on carboxylated modified magnetic beads incubated with NH2-polyA and then hybridized with polyT-glyphosate aptamer and complementary DNA. Afterwards, a quantitative detection method based on qPCR was established. When the glyphosate aptamer on Mbs@dsDNA specifically recognizes glyphosate, complementary DNA is released and then enters the qPCR signal amplification process. The linear range of the method was 0.6 μmol/L-30 mmol/L and the detection limit was set at 0.6 μmol/L. The recoveries in tap water ranged from 103.4 to 104.9% and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were <1%. The aptamer proposed in this study has good potential for recognizing glyphosate. The detection method combined with qPCR might have good application prospects in detecting and supervising other pesticide residues.

Large-Scale MoS2 Pixel Array for Imaging Sensor

Project description:Two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been extensively investigated in the field of optoelectronic devices. However, most reported MoS2 phototransistors are fabricated using the mechanical exfoliation method to obtain micro-scale MoS2 flakes, which is laboratory- feasible but not practical for the future industrial fabrication of large-scale pixel arrays. Recently, wafer-scale MoS2 growth has been rapidly developed, but few results of uniform large-scale photoelectric devices were reported. Here, we designed a 12 × 12 pixels pixel array image sensor fabricated on a 2 cm × 2 cm monolayer MoS2 film grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The photogating effect induced by the formation of trap states ensures a high photoresponsivity of 364 AW−1, which is considerably superior to traditional CMOS sensors (≈0.1 AW−1). Experimental results also show highly uniform photoelectric properties in this array. Finally, the concatenated image obtained by laser lighting stencil and photolithography mask demonstrates the promising potential of 2D MoS2 for future optoelectrical applications.

Photoelectric conversion on Earth's surface via widespread Fe- and Mn-mineral coatings.

Project description:Sunlight drives photosynthesis and associated biological processes, and also influences inorganic processes that shape Earth's climate and geochemistry. Bacterial solar-to-chemical energy conversion on this planet evolved to use an intricate intracellular process of phototrophy. However, a natural nonbiological counterpart to phototrophy has yet to be recognized. In this work, we reveal the inherent "phototrophic-like" behavior of vast expanses of natural rock/soil surfaces from deserts, red soils, and karst environments, all of which can drive photon-to-electron conversions. Using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Fe and Mn (oxyhydr)oxide-rich coatings were found in rock varnishes, as were Fe (oxyhydr)oxides on red soil surfaces and minute amounts of Mn oxides on karst rock surfaces. By directly fabricating a photoelectric detection device on the thin section of a rock varnish sample, we have recorded an in situ photocurrent micromapping of the coatings, which behave as highly sensitive and stable photoelectric systems. Additional measurements of red soil and powder separated from the outermost surface of karst rocks yielded photocurrents that are also sensitive to irradiation. The prominent solar-responsive capability of the phototrophic-like rocks/soils is ascribed to the semiconducting Fe- and Mn (oxyhydr)oxide-mineral coatings. The native semiconducting Fe/Mn-rich coatings may play a role similar, in part, to photosynthetic systems and thus provide a distinctive driving force for redox (bio)geochemistry on Earth's surfaces.
