Moire-Enabled Topological Superconductivity.

ABSTRACT: The search for artificial topological superconductivity has been limited by the stringent conditions required for its emergence. As exemplified by the recent discoveries of various correlated electronic states in twisted van der Waals materials, moiré patterns can act as a powerful knob to create artificial electronic structures. Here, we demonstrate that a moiré pattern between a van der Waals superconductor and a monolayer ferromagnet creates a periodic potential modulation that enables the realization of a topological superconducting state that would not be accessible in the absence of the moiré. The magnetic moiré pattern gives rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov minibands and periodic modulation of the Majorana edge modes that we detect using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). Moiré patterns and, more broadly, periodic potential modulations are powerful tools to overcome the conventional constraints for realizing and controlling topological superconductivity.

Classifying superconductivity in Moire graphene superlattices.

Project description:Several research groups have reported on the observation of superconductivity in bilayer graphene structures where single atomic layers of graphene are stacked and then twisted at angles θ forming Moiré superlattices. The characterization of the superconducting state in these 2D materials is an ongoing task. Here we investigate the pairing symmetry of bilayer graphene Moiré superlattices twisted at θ = 1.05°, 1.10° and 1.16° for carrier doping states varied in the range of n = (0.5 - 1.5) · 1012 cm-2 (where superconductivity can be realized) by analyzing the temperature dependence of the upper critical field Bc2(T) and the self-field critical current Jc(sf,T) within currently available models - all of which start from phonon-mediated BCS theory - for single- and two-band s-, d-, p- and d + id-wave gap symmetries. Extracted superconducting parameters show that only s-wave and a specific kind of p-wave symmetries are likely to be dominant in bilayer graphene Moiré superlattices. More experimental data is required to distinguish between the s- and remaining p-wave symmetries as well as the suspected two-band superconductivity in these 2D superlattices.

Moire superlattices at the topological insulator Bi2Te3.

Project description:We report on the observation of complex superlattices at the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals the existence of two different periodic structures in addition to the Bi2Te3 atomic lattice, which is found to strongly affect the local electronic structure. These three different periodicities are interpreted to result from a single small in-plane rotation of the topmost quintuple layer only. Density functional theory calculations support the observed increase in the DOS near the Fermi level, and exclude the possibility that strain is at the origin of the observed Moiré pattern. Exploration of Moiré superlattices formed by the quintuple layers of topological insulators holds great potential for further tuning of the properties of topological insulators.

Superconductivity Bordering Rashba Type Topological Transition.

Project description:Strong spin orbital interaction (SOI) can induce unique quantum phenomena such as topological insulators, the Rashba effect, or p-wave superconductivity. Combining these three quantum phenomena into a single compound has important scientific implications. Here we report experimental observations of consecutive quantum phase transitions from a Rashba type topological trivial phase to topological insulator state then further proceeding to superconductivity in a SOI compound BiTeI tuned via pressures. The electrical resistivity measurement with V shape change signals the transition from a Rashba type topological trivial to a topological insulator phase at 2 GPa, which is caused by an energy gap close then reopen with band inverse. Superconducting transition appears at 8 GPa with a critical temperature TC of 5.3 K. Structure refinements indicate that the consecutive phase transitions are correlated to the changes in the Bi-Te bond and bond angle as function of pressures. The Hall Effect measurements reveal an intimate relationship between superconductivity and the unusual change in carrier density that points to possible unconventional superconductivity.

Amorphous topological superconductivity in a Shiba glass.

Project description:Topological states of matter support quantised nondissipative responses and exotic quantum particles that cannot be accessed in common materials. The exceptional properties and application potential of topological materials have triggered a large-scale search for new realisations. Breaking away from the popular trend focusing almost exclusively on crystalline symmetries, we introduce the Shiba glass as a platform for amorphous topological quantum matter. This system consists of an ensemble of randomly distributed magnetic atoms on a superconducting surface. We show that subgap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states on the magnetic moments form a topological superconducting phase at critical density despite a complete absence of spatial order. Experimental signatures of the amorphous topological state can be obtained by scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements probing the topological edge mode. Our discovery demonstrates the physical feasibility of amorphous topological quantum matter, presenting a concrete route to fabricating new topological systems from nontopological materials with random dopants.

Topological superconductivity in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

Project description:Theoretically, it has been known that breaking spin degeneracy and effectively realizing spinless fermions is a promising path to topological superconductors. Yet, topological superconductors are rare to date. Here we propose to realize spinless fermions by splitting the spin degeneracy in momentum space. Specifically, we identify monolayer hole-doped transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)s as candidates for topological superconductors out of such momentum-space-split spinless fermions. Although electron-doped TMDs have recently been found superconducting, the observed superconductivity is unlikely topological because of the near spin degeneracy. Meanwhile, hole-doped TMDs with momentum-space-split spinless fermions remain unexplored. Employing a renormalization group analysis, we propose that the unusual spin-valley locking in hole-doped TMDs together with repulsive interactions selectively favours two topological superconducting states: interpocket paired state with Chern number 2 and intrapocket paired state with finite pair momentum. A confirmation of our predictions will open up possibilities for manipulating topological superconductors on the device-friendly platform of monolayer TMDs.

Unconventional superconductivity in topological Kramers nodal-line semimetals.

Project description:Crystalline symmetry is a defining factor of the electronic band topology in solids, where many-body interactions often induce a spontaneous breaking of symmetry. Superconductors lacking an inversion center are among the best systems to study such effects or even to achieve topological superconductivity. Here, we demonstrate that TRuSi materials (with T a transition metal) belong to this class. Their bulk normal states behave as three-dimensional Kramers nodal-line semimetals, characterized by large antisymmetric spin-orbit couplings and by hourglass-like dispersions. Our muon-spin spectroscopy measurements show that certain TRuSi compounds spontaneously break the time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition, while unexpectedly showing a fully gapped superconductivity. Their unconventional behavior is consistent with a unitary (s + ip) pairing, reflecting a mixture of spin singlets and spin triplets. By combining an intrinsic time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconductivity with nontrivial electronic bands, TRuSi compounds provide an ideal platform for investigating the rich interplay between unconventional superconductivity and the exotic properties of Kramers nodal-line/hourglass fermions.

Antiferromagnetism-driven two-dimensional topological nodal-point superconductivity.

Project description:Magnet/superconductor hybrids (MSHs) hold the promise to host emergent topological superconducting phases. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems in proximity to s-wave superconductors have shown evidence of gapped topological superconductivity with zero-energy end states and chiral edge modes. Recently, it was proposed that the bulk transition-metal dichalcogenide 4Hb-TaS2 is a gapless topological nodal-point superconductor (TNPSC). However, there has been no experimental realization of a TNPSC in a MSH system yet. Here we present the discovery of TNPSC in antiferromagnetic (AFM) monolayers on top of an s-wave superconductor. Our calculations show that the topological phase is driven by the AFM order, resulting in the emergence of a gapless time-reversal invariant topological superconducting state. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy we observe a low-energy edge mode, which separates the topological phase from the trivial one, at the boundaries of antiferromagnetic islands. As predicted by the calculations, we find that the relative spectral weight of the edge mode depends on the edge's atomic configuration. Our results establish the combination of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity as a novel route to design 2D topological quantum phases.

Emergent superconductivity in topological-kagome-magnet/metal heterostructures.

Project description:Itinerant kagome lattice magnets exhibit many novel correlated and topological quantum electronic states with broken time-reversal symmetry. Superconductivity, however, has not been observed in this class of materials, presenting a roadblock in a promising path toward topological superconductivity. Here, we report that novel superconductivity can emerge at the interface of kagome Chern magnet TbMn6Sn6 and metal heterostructures when elemental metallic thin films are deposited on either the top (001) surface or the side surfaces. Superconductivity is also successfully induced and systematically studied by using various types of metallic tips on different TbMn6Sn6 surfaces in point-contact measurements. The anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field suggests that the emergent superconductivity is quasi-two-dimensional. Remarkably, the interface superconductor couples to the magnetic order of the kagome metal and exhibits a hysteretic magnetoresistance in the superconducting states. Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling, the observed interface superconductivity can be a surprising and more realistic realization of the p-wave topological superconductors theoretically proposed for two-dimensional semiconductors proximity-coupled to s-wave superconductors and insulating ferromagnets. Our findings of robust superconductivity in topological-Chern-magnet/metal heterostructures offer a new direction for investigating spin-triplet pairing and topological superconductivity.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in topological parent compound Bi2Te3.

Project description:We report a successful observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in a topological compound Bi(2)Te(3) with T(c) of ?3 K between 3 to 6 GPa. The combined high-pressure structure investigations with synchrotron radiation indicated that the superconductivity occurred at the ambient phase without crystal structure phase transition. The Hall effects measurements indicated the hole-type carrier in the pressure-induced superconducting Bi(2)Te(3) single crystal. Consequently, the first-principles calculations based on the structural data obtained by the Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns at high pressure showed that the electronic structure under pressure remained topologically nontrivial. The results suggested that topological superconductivity can be realized in Bi(2)Te(3) due to the proximity effect between superconducting bulk states and Dirac-type surface states. We also discuss the possibility that the bulk state could be a topological superconductor.

Pressure-Tuning Superconductivity in Noncentrosymmetric Topological Materials ZrRuAs.

Project description:Recently, the hexagonal phase of ternary transition metal pnictides TT'X (T = Zr, Hf; T' = Ru; X = P, As), which are well-known noncentrosymmetric superconductors, were predicted to host nontrivial bulk topology. In this work, we systematically investigate the electronic responses of ZrRuAs to external pressure. At ambient pressure, ZrRuAs show superconductivity with Tc ~ 7.74 K, while a large upper critical field ~ 13.03 T is obtained for ZrRuAs, which is comparable to the weak-coupling Pauli limit. The resistivity of ZrRuAs exhibits a non-monotonic evolution with increasing pressure. The superconducting transition temperature Tc increases with applied pressure and reaches a maximum value of 7.93 K at 2.1 GPa, followed by a decrease. The nontrivial topology is robust and persists up to the high-pressure regime. Considering both robust superconductivity and intriguing topology in this material, our results could contribute to studies of the interplay between topological electronic states and superconductivity.
