Dark caves lacking primary productivity can expose subterranean animals to hypoxia. We used the surface-dwelling (surface fish) and cave-dwelling (cavefish) morphs of <i>Astyanax mexicanus</i> as a model for understanding the mechanisms of hypoxia tolerance in the cave environment.
