Project description:In this paper, a mobile sound localization setup is described that can be used to measure a persons' localization performance in a sophisticated way. With this mobile setup, researchers can travel to subjects, and studies are not limited by the willingness of participants to visit the clinic. In the setup, sounds are presented within a partial sphere in both the horizontal (-70° to 70° azimuth) and vertical (-35° to 40° elevation) plane. Participants are asked to indicate the perceived sound origin by pointing with a head-mounted LED. Head movements are recorded and instantly visualized (i.e. online target response plots). Depending on the research question, the setup can be adjusted for more advanced or simplified measurements, making the setup suitable for a wide range of research questions. The rationale for building this mobile setup was to test horizontal sound localization abilities (binaural hearing) and vertical sound localization abilities (monaural hearing) of children and patients who were otherwise not accessible for testing. In this setup loudspeakers are not visible and subjects are asked to indicate the perceived sound direction by a natural head-pointing response towards the perceived location. An advantage of the implemented pointing-method is the playful manner in which children are tested. They are 'shooting' at the perceived sound target location with a head-mounted LED and have fun while performing the test. •We present a mobile sound localization setup suitable for measuring horizontal and vertical sound localization in children and adult patients in the convenience of their own environment.

Project description:PurposeTo propose and validate a respiratory motion resolved, self-gated (SG) 4D-MRI technique to assess patient-specific breathing motion of abdominal organs for radiation treatment planning.MethodsThe proposed 4D-MRI technique was based on the balanced steady-state free-precession (bSSFP) technique and 3D k-space encoding. A novel rotating cartesian k-space (ROCK) reordering method was designed which incorporates repeatedly sampled k-space centerline as the SG motion surrogate and allows for retrospective k-space data binning into different respiratory positions based on the amplitude of the surrogate. The multiple respiratory-resolved 3D k-space data were subsequently reconstructed using a joint parallel imaging and compressed sensing method with spatial and temporal regularization. The proposed 4D-MRI technique was validated using a custom-made dynamic motion phantom and was tested in six healthy volunteers, in whom quantitative diaphragm and kidney motion measurements based on 4D-MRI images were compared with those based on 2D-CINE images.ResultsThe 5-minute 4D-MRI scan offers high-quality volumetric images in 1.2 × 1.2 × 1.6 mm3 and eight respiratory positions, with good soft-tissue contrast. In phantom experiments with triangular motion waveform, the motion amplitude measurements based on 4D-MRI were 11.89% smaller than the ground truth, whereas a -12.5% difference was expected due to data binning effects. In healthy volunteers, the difference between the measurements based on 4D-MRI and the ones based on 2D-CINE were 6.2 ± 4.5% for the diaphragm, 8.2 ± 4.9% and 8.9 ± 5.1% for the right and left kidney.ConclusionThe proposed 4D-MRI technique could provide high-resolution, high-quality, respiratory motion-resolved 4D images with good soft-tissue contrast and are free of the "stitching" artifacts usually seen on 4D-CT and 4D-MRI based on resorting 2D-CINE. It could be used to visualize and quantify abdominal organ motion for MRI-based radiation treatment planning.

Project description:BackgroundComputed tomography (CT) and spirometry are the current standard methods for assessing lung anatomy and pulmonary ventilation, respectively. However, CT provides limited ventilation information and spirometry only provides global measures of lung ventilation. Thus, a method that can enable simultaneous examination of lung anatomy and ventilation is of clinical interest.PurposeTo develop and test a 4D respiratory-resolved sparse lung MRI (XD-UTE: eXtra-Dimensional Ultrashort TE imaging) approach for simultaneous evaluation of lung anatomy and pulmonary ventilation.Study typeProspective.PopulationIn all, 23 subjects (11 volunteers and 12 patients, mean age = 63.6 ± 8.4).Field strength/sequence3T MR; a prototype 3D golden-angle radial UTE sequence, a Cartesian breath-hold volumetric-interpolated examination (BH-VIBE) sequence.AssessmentAll subjects were scanned using the 3D golden-angle radial UTE sequence during normal breathing. Ten subjects underwent an additional scan during alternating normal and deep breathing. Respiratory-motion-resolved sparse reconstruction was performed for all the acquired data to generate dynamic normal-breathing or deep-breathing image series. For comparison, BH-VIBE was performed in 12 subjects. Lung images were visually scored by three experienced chest radiologists and were analyzed by two observers who segmented the left and right lung to derive ventilation parameters in comparison with spirometry.Statistical testsNonparametric paired two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test; intraclass correlation coefficient, Pearson correlation coefficient.ResultsXD-UTE achieved significantly improved image quality compared both with Cartesian BH-VIBE and radial reconstruction without motion compensation (P < 0.05). The global ventilation parameters (a sum of the left and right lung measures) were in good correlation with spirometry in the same subjects (correlation coefficient = 0.724). There were excellent correlations between the results obtained by two observers (intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.8855-0.9995).Data conclusionSimultaneous evaluation of lung anatomy and ventilation using XD-UTE is demonstrated, which have shown good potential for improved diagnosis and management of patients with heterogeneous lung diseases.Level of evidence2 Technical Efficacy: Stage 2 J. Project description:PurposeTo develop a novel deep learning approach for 4D-MRI reconstruction, named Movienet, which exploits space-time-coil correlations and motion preservation instead of k-space data consistency, to accelerate the acquisition of golden-angle radial data and enable subsecond reconstruction times in dynamic MRI.MethodsMovienet uses a U-net architecture with modified residual learning blocks that operate entirely in the image domain to remove aliasing artifacts and reconstruct an unaliased motion-resolved 4D image. Motion preservation is enforced by sorting the input image and reference for training in a linear motion order from expiration to inspiration. The input image was collected with a lower scan time than the reference XD-GRASP image used for training. Movienet is demonstrated for motion-resolved 4D MRI and motion-resistant 3D MRI of abdominal tumors on a therapeutic 1.5T MR-Linac (1.5-fold acquisition acceleration) and diagnostic 3T MRI scanners (2-fold and 2.25-fold acquisition acceleration for 4D and 3D, respectively). Image quality was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively by expert clinical readers.ResultsThe reconstruction time of Movienet was 0.69 s (4 motion states) and 0.75 s (10 motion states), which is substantially lower than iterative XD-GRASP and unrolled reconstruction networks. Movienet enables faster acquisition than XD-GRASP with similar overall image quality and improved suppression of streaking artifacts.ConclusionMovienet accelerates data acquisition with respect to compressed sensing and reconstructs 4D images in less than 1 s, which would enable an efficient implementation of 4D MRI in a clinical setting for fast motion-resistant 3D anatomical imaging or motion-resolved 4D imaging.

Project description:PurposeGastrointestinal motion patterns such as peristalsis and segmental contractions can alter the shape and position of the stomach and intestines with respect to other irradiated organs during radiation therapy. Unfortunately, these deformations are concealed by conventional four-dimensional (4D)-MRI techniques, which were developed to visualize respiratory motion by binning acquired data into respiratory motion states without considering the phases of GI motion. We present a method to reconstruct breathing-compensated images showing the phases of periodic gastric motion and study the effect of this motion on regional anatomical structures.MethodsSixty-seven DCE-MRI examinations were performed on patients undergoing MRI simulation for hepatocellular carcinoma using a golden-angle stack-of-stars sequence that collected 2000 radial spokes over 5 min. The collected data were reconstructed using a method with integrated respiratory motion correction into a time series of 3D image volumes without visible breathing motion. From this series, a gastric motion signal was extracted by temporal filtering of time-intensity curves in the stomach. Using this motion signal, breathing-corrected back-projection images were sorted according to the gastric phase and reconstructed into 21 gastric motion state images showing the phases of gastric motion.ResultsReconstructed image volumes showed gastric motion states clearly with no visible breathing motion or related artifacts. The mean frequency of the gastric motion signal was 3 cycles/min with a standard deviation of 0.27 cycles/min.ConclusionsPeriodic gastrointestinal motion can be visualized without confounding respiratory motion using the presented GI 4D MRI technique. GI 4D MRIs may help define internal target volumes for treatment planning, aid in planning organ at risk volume definition, or support motion model development for gastrointestinal motion tracking algorithms for real-time MR-guided radiation therapy.

Project description:Neurovascular 4D-Flow MRI has emerged as a powerful tool for comprehensive cerebrovascular hemodynamic characterization. Clinical studies in at risk populations such as aging adults indicate hemodynamic markers can be confounded by motion-induced bias. This study develops and characterizes a high fidelity 3D self-navigation approach for retrospective rigid motion correction of neurovascular 4D-Flow data. A 3D radial trajectory with pseudorandom ordering was combined with a multi-resolution low rank regularization approach to enable high spatiotemporal resolution self-navigators from extremely undersampled data. Phantom and volunteer experiments were performed at 3.0T to evaluate the ability to correct for different amounts of induced motions. In addition, the approach was applied to clinical-research exams from ongoing aging studies to characterize performance in the clinical setting. Simulations, phantom and volunteer experiments with motion correction produced images with increased vessel conspicuity, reduced image blurring, and decreased variability in quantitative measures. Clinical exams revealed significant changes in hemodynamic parameters including blood flow rates, flow pulsatility index, and lumen areas after motion correction in probed cerebral arteries (Flow: P<0.001 Lt ICA, P=0.002 Rt ICA, P=0.004 Lt MCA, P=0.004 Rt MCA; Area: P<0.001 Lt ICA, P<0.001 Rt ICA, P=0.004 Lt MCA, P=0.004 Rt MCA; flow pulsatility index: P=0.042 Rt ICA, P=0.002 Lt MCA). Motion induced bias can lead to significant overestimation of hemodynamic markers in cerebral arteries. The proposed method reduces measurement bias from rigid motion in neurovascular 4D-Flow MRI in challenging populations such as aging adults.

Project description:Construction of nano-devices that can generate controllable unidirectional rotation is an important part of nanotechnology. Here, we design a nano-turbine composed of carbon nanotube and graphene nanoblades, which can be driven by fluid flow. Rotation motion of nano-turbine is quantitatively studied by molecular dynamics simulations on this model system. A robust linear relationship is achieved with this nano-turbine between its rotation rate and the fluid flow velocity spanning two orders of magnitude, and this linear relationship remains intact at various temperatures. More interestingly, a striking difference from its macroscopic counterpart is identified: the rotation rate is much smaller (by a factor of ~15) than that of the macroscopic turbine with the same driving flow. This discrepancy is shown to be related to the disruption of water flow at nanoscale, together with the water slippage at graphene surface and the so-called "dragging effect". Moreover, counterintuitively, the ratio of "effective" driving flow velocity increases as the flow velocity increases, suggesting that the linear dependence on the flow velocity can be more complicated in nature. These findings may serve as a foundation for the further development of rotary nano-devices and should also be helpful for a better understanding of the biological molecular motors.

Project description:PurposeTo address head motion in brain MRI with a novel motion-resolved imaging framework, with application to motion-robust quantitative multiparametric mapping.MethodsMR multitasking conceptualizes the underlying multiparametric image in the presence of motion as a multidimensional low-rank tensor. By incorporating a motion-state dimension into the parameter dimensions and introducing unsupervised motion-state binning and outlier motion reweighting mechanisms, the brain motion can be readily resolved for motion-robust quantitative imaging. A numerical motion phantom was used to simulate different discrete and periodic motion patterns under various translational and rotational scenarios, as well as investigate the sensitivity to exceptionally small and large displacements. In vivo brain MRI was performed to also evaluate different real discrete and periodic motion patterns. The effectiveness of motion-resolved imaging for simultaneous T1 /T2 /T1ρ mapping in the brain was investigated.ResultsFor all 14 simulation scenarios of small, intermediate, and large motion displacements, the motion-resolved approach produced T1 /T2 /T1ρ maps with less absolute difference errors against the ground truth, lower RMSE, and higher structural similarity index measure of T1 /T2 /T1ρ measurements compared to motion removal, and no motion handling. For in vivo experiments, the motion-resolved approach produced T1 /T2 /T1ρ maps with the best image quality free from motion artifacts under random discrete motion, tremor, periodic shaking, and nodding patterns compared to motion removal and no motion handling. The proposed method also yielded T1 /T2 /T1ρ measurement distributions closest to the motion-free reference, with minimal measurement bias and variance.ConclusionMotion-resolved quantitative brain imaging is achieved with multitasking, which is generalizable to various head motion patterns without explicit need for registration-based motion correction.

Project description:PurposeTo correct maternal breathing and fetal bulk motion during fetal 4D flow MRI.MethodsA Doppler-ultrasound fetal cardiac-gated free-running 4D flow acquisition was corrected post hoc for maternal respiratory and fetal bulk motion in separate automated steps, with optional manual intervention to assess and limit fetal motion artifacts. Compressed-sensing reconstruction with a data outlier rejection algorithm was adapted from previous work. Pre- and post-motion correction comparison included qualitative visibility of vasculature on phase-contrast MR angiograms (five-point Likert scale), conservation of mass of the aortic isthmus, ductus arteriosus, and descending aorta, and coefficient of variation of flow along the descending aorta.ResultsTwenty-nine third trimester acquisitions were performed for 15 healthy fetuses and two patients with postnatally confirmed aortic coarctation during a single examination for each participant. Only 15/27 (56%) of all volunteers and 1/2 (50%) of all patient precorrection acquisitions were suitable for flow analysis. Motion correction recovered eight "failed" acquisitions, including one patient, with 24/29 (83%) suitable for flow analysis. In the 15 viable uncorrected volunteer acquisitions, motion correction improved phase-contrast MR angiograms visibility significantly in the ductus arteriosus (from 4.0 to 4.3, p = 0.04) and aortic arch (3.7 to 4.0, p = 0.03). Motion correction improved conservation of mass to a median (interquartile range) percent difference of 5% (9%) from 14% (24%) with improvement shown in 14/15 acquisitions (p = 0.002), whereas coefficient of variation changes were not significantly different (uncorrected: 0.15 (0.09), corrected: 0.11 (0.09), p = 0.3).ConclusionsMotion correction compensated for maternal and fetal motion in fetal 4D flow MRI data, improving image quality and conservation of mass.

Project description:Therapeutic drugs with ototoxic side effects cause significant hearing loss for thousands of patients annually. Two major classes of ototoxic drugs are cisplatin and the aminoglycoside antibiotics, both of which are toxic to mechanosensory hair cells, the receptor cells of the inner ear. A critical need exists for therapies that protect the inner ear without inhibiting the therapeutic efficacy of these drugs. The induction of heat shock proteins (HSPs) inhibits both aminoglycoside- and cisplatin-induced hair cell death and hearing loss. We hypothesized that exposure to sound that is titrated to stress the inner ear without causing permanent damage would induce HSPs in the cochlea and inhibit ototoxic drug–induced hearing loss. We developed a sound exposure protocol that induces HSPs without causing permanent hearing loss. We used this protocol in conjunction with a newly developed mouse model of cisplatin ototoxicity and found that preconditioning mouse inner ears with sound has a robust protective effect against cisplatin-induced hearing loss and hair cell death. Sound therapy also provided protection against aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. These data indicate that sound preconditioning protects against both classes of ototoxic drugs, and they suggest that sound therapy holds promise for preventing hearing loss in patients receiving these drugs.
