Electro-spray deposited TiO₂ bilayer films and their recyclable photocatalytic self-cleaning strategy.

ABSTRACT: Recyclable titanium dioxide (TiO₂)-based photocatalytic self-cleaning films (SCFs) having a bilayer structure were prepared and assessed. These SCFs comprised two layers of fibers fabricated using an electrospinning process. The self-cleaning layer was made of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) fibers with embedded TiO₂ while the substrate layer was composed of fibers made by simultaneously electrospinning poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and ABS. This substrate improved the mechanical strength of the SCF and provided greater adhesion due to the presence of the PVA. The experimental results showed that the hydrophobicity (as assessed by the water contact angle), photocatalytic properties and self-cleaning efficiency of the SCF were all enhanced with increasing TiO₂ content in the ABS/TiO₂ fibers. In addition, the introduction of the substrate layer allowed the SCFs to be applied to various surfaces and then peeled off when desired. The ABS fibers effectively improved the strength of the overall film, while deterioration of the ABS upon exposure to UV light was alleviated by the addition of TiO₂. These SCFs can potentially be recycled after use in various environments, and therefore have applications in the fields of environmental protection and medical science.

Project description:The photocatalytic production of hydrogen using biopolymer-immobilized titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an innovative and sustainable approach to renewable energy generation. TiO2, a well-known photocatalyst, benefits from immobilization on biopolymers due to its environmental friendliness, abundance, and biodegradability. In another way, to boost the efficiency of TiO2, its surface properties can be modified by incorporating co-catalysts like platinum (Pt) to improve charge separation. In this work, the surface of commercial TiO2 PC500 was modified with Pt nanoparticles (Pt1%@PC500) and then immobilized on glass surfaces using polyhydroxyalkanoate biopolymer poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH). The as-prepared immobilized Pt-modified TiO2 photocatalysts were fully characterized using various physicochemical techniques. The photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst film was investigated for photocatalytic hydrogen production through water reduction using ethanol as a sacrificial donor. The impact of the film preparation conditions, e.g., PHBH concentration, PHBH:catalyst ratio, and temperature, on activity and stability was studied in detail. The application of biopolymer PHBH as a binder provides a green alternative to conventional immobilization methods, and with the application of PHBH, a stable and active photocatalyst film that showed lower activity compared to that of the suspended photocatalyst but good recyclability in six runs was prepared. A long-term photocatalytic hydrogen production experiment was carried out. In 98 h of operation, 12 mmol of hydrogen was produced in three consecutive runs with a PHBH/Pt1%@PC500 film having an area of ∼5.3 cm2. A significantly lower hydrogen productivity was observed after the first run, possibly due to a change in film structure, but thereafter, the productivity remained almost constant for the second and third runs. Hydrogen was the main product in the gas phase (90%), but carbon dioxide (4-5%) and methane (4-5%) were obtained as important byproducts. The byproducts are a consequence of the use of the sacrificial reagent ethanol. The results of the film performance are very promising, with regard to large-scale continuous hydrogen production.

Project description:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the form of thin films has attracted enormous attention for photocatalysis. It combines the fundamental properties of TiO2 as a large bandgap semiconductor with the advantage of thin films, making it competitive with TiO2 powders for recycling and maintenance in photocatalytic applications. There are many aspects affecting the photocatalytic performance of thin film structures, such as the nanocrystalline size, surface morphology, and phase composition. However, the quantification of each influencing aspect needs to be better studied and correlated. Here, we prepared a series of TiO2 thin films using a sol-gel process and spin-coated on p-type, (100)-oriented silicon substrates with a native oxide layer. The as-deposited TiO2 thin films were then annealed at different temperatures from 400 °C to 800 °C for 3 h in an ambient atmosphere. This sample synthesis provided systemic parameter variation regarding the aspects mentioned above. To characterize thin films, several techniques were used. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was employed for the investigation of the film thickness and the optical properties. The results revealed that an increasing annealing temperature reduced the film thickness with an increase in the refractive index. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to examine the surface morphology, revealing an increased surface roughness and grain sizes. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and UV-Raman spectroscopy were used to study the phase composition and crystallite size. The annealing process initially led to the formation of pure anatase, followed by a transformation from anatase to rutile as the annealing temperature increased. An overall enhancement in crystallinity was also observed. The photocatalytic properties of the thin films were tested using the photocatalytic decomposition of acetone gas in a home-built solid (photocatalyst)-gas (reactant) reactor. The composition of the gas mixture in the reaction chamber was monitored using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Finally, all of the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of the TiO2 thin films were quantified and correlated with their photocatalytic properties using a correlation matrix. This provided a good overview of which film properties affect the photocatalytic efficiency the most.

Project description:Electro- and photochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is the quintessence of modern-day sustainable research. We report our studies on the electro- and photoinduced interfacial charge transfer occurring in a nanocrystalline mesoporous TiO2 film and two TiO2/iron porphyrin hybrid films (meso-aryl- and β-pyrrole-substituted porphyrins, respectively) under CO2R conditions. We used transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) to demonstrate that, under 355 nm laser excitation and an applied voltage bias (0 to -0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl), the TiO2 film exhibited a diminution in the transient absorption (at -0.5 V by 35%), as well as a reduction of the lifetime of the photogenerated electrons (at -0.5 V by 50%) when the experiments were conducted under a CO2 atmosphere changing from inert N2. The TiO2/iron porphyrin films showed faster charge recombination kinetics, featuring 100-fold faster transient signal decays than that of the TiO2 film. The electro-, photo-, and photoelectrochemical CO2R performance of the TiO2 and TiO2/iron porphyrin films are evaluated within the bias range of -0.5 to -1.8 V vs Ag/AgCl. The bare TiO2 film produced CO and CH4 as well as H2, depending on the applied voltage bias. In contrast, the TiO2/iron porphyrin films showed the exclusive formation of CO (100% selectivity) under identical conditions. During the CO2R, a gain in the overpotential values is obtained under light irradiation conditions. This finding was indicative of a direct transfer of the photogenerated electrons from the film to absorbed CO2 molecules and an observed decrease in the decay of the TAS signals. In the TiO2/iron porphyrin films, we identified the interfacial charge recombination processes between the oxidized iron porphyrin and the electrons of the TiO2 conduction band. These competitive processes are considered to be responsible for the diminution of direct charge transfer between the film and the adsorbed CO2 molecules, explaining the moderate performances of the hybrid films for the CO2R.
