Assessment of heavy metal pollution in surface sediments of the Chishui River Basin, China.

ABSTRACT: Accumulated heavy metals in surface sediments are released into the aquatic environment, causing secondary contamination of the hydrosphere, and increasing the risks to human health. To evaluate the pollution characteristics of heavy metals in the sediments of the Chishui River Basin, in the present study, the concentrations of five heavy metals in surface sediments of the Chishui River Basin in China were investigated using the geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, and potential ecological risk indexes. These indexes evaluated the degree of contamination and the influence of human activities on heavy metal levels in the basin. Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As were found at concentrations of 5.12-120.40, 36.01-219.31, 0.03-1.28, 0.01-1.18, and 1.56-11.59 mg kg-1, respectively, with mean values of 37.43, 91.92, 0.25, 0.07, and 5.16 mg kg-1, respectively, in the order Zn > Cu > As > Cd > Hg. The contamination indices revealed Hg as the principal pollutant based on the spatial distribution, while Pearson's correlation coefficients suggested that Cu, Zn, and As originated from a similar source. Hg had a different source from the other metals, whereas Cd originated from a different source compared with that of Zn, As, and Hg. This paper showed a Hg and Cd contamination in the Chishui River Basin.

Project description:Heavy metal pollution of river freshwater environments currently raises significant concerns due to the toxic effects and the fact that heavy metal behavior is not fully understood. This study assessed the contamination level of eight heavy metals and trace elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd, and Hg) in the surface sediments of 19 sites in 2018 during four periods (March, May, June, and October) in Olt River sediments. Multivariate statistical techniques were used, namely, one-way ANOVA, person product-moment correlation analysis, principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and sediment quality indicators such as the contamination factor and pollution load index. The results demonstrated higher contents of Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cd, and Hg, with values that were over 2.46, 4.40, 1.15, 8.28, 1.10, 1.53, and 3.71 times more, respectively, compared with the national quality standards for sediments. We observed a positive significant statistical correlation (p < 0.001) in March between elevation and Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Zn and a negative correlation between Pb and elevation (p = 0.08). Intermetal associations were observed only in March, indicating a relationship with river discharge from spring. The PCA sustained mainly anthropogenic sources of heavy metals, which were also identified through correlation and cluster analyses. We noted significant differences between the Cr and Pb population means and variances (p < 0.001) for the data measured in March, May, June, and October. The contamination factor indicated that the pollution level of heavy metals was high and significant for As at 15 of the 19 sites. The pollution load index showed that over 89% of the sites were polluted by metals to various degrees during the four periods investigated. Our results improve the knowledge of anthropogenic versus natural origins of heavy metals in river surface sediments, which is extremely important in assessing environmental and human health risks and beneficial for decision-maker outcomes for national freshwater management plans.

Project description:Background: Exposure to heavy metals during pregnancy is an important risk factor for adverse birth outcomes. We aimed to investigate the current heavy metal exposure levels in cord blood from healthy pregnant women residing in the Huaihe River Basin, China, and examined the association between heavy metal levels and dietary habits and lifestyle factors. In this study, we measured the exposure levels of five heavy metals in the umbilical cord blood from 350 healthy pregnant women and administered 350 self-reported questionnaires regarding the general characteristics and dietary habits of those women. Methods: This study was undertaken in Shenqiu county, Henan province, which is in the area of the Huai River Basin, in a cohort of pregnant women and newborn babies in 2013-2014. We recruited a sample of 1000 pregnant women among those receiving prenatal examination, measured the real individual newborn exposure to heavy metals in serum by ICP-MS, collected information regarding the pregnant women with a questionnaire survey and obtained data on environmental quality from environmental protection agencies and the available literature. We estimated the daily individual exposure to heavy metals of all the 1000 participants throughout the pregnancy and recorded their birth outcomes after delivery. Then we analyzed the association between birth outcome and individual exposure to heavy metals. Results: 54 newborn children had birth defects. The geometric means of cord blood levels of As, Cd, Cr, Pb and Hg were measured at 0.92 ± 1.01 ng mL-1, 0.11 ± 0.17 ng mL-1, 4.57 ± 5.02 ng mL-1, 3.37 ± 3.81 ng mL-1 and 0.89 ± 1.69 ng mL-1 for subjects (n = 54) who gave birth to infants with birth defects and 0.43 ± 0.88 ng mL-1, 0.52 ± 3.86 ng mL-1, 1.94 ± 2.92 ng mL-1, 4.38 ± 4.96 ng mL-1 and 0.43 ± 0.91 ng mL-1 for subjects (n = 296) with healthy infants, respectively. The contents of all five heavy metals in the whole blood of both of these two groups were higher than the reference values of the Chinese general population (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The occurrence of birth defects was 15.4% in this cohort, and was correlated to exposure of parents to environments containing heavy metal contaminants in Shenqiu county in the Huai River Basin. The heavy metal exposure situation of the investigated population had serious effects in terms of reproductive defects in children. The specific link between newborn defects and environmental heavy metal contaminants suggested that contamination in pregnant women persisted over time, and that the exposure may have a long term effect.
