Active Topological Glass Confined within a Spherical Cavity.

ABSTRACT: We study active topological glass under spherical confinement, allowing us to exceed the chain lengths simulated previously and determine the critical exponents of the arrested conformations. We find a previously unresolved "tank-treading" dynamic mode of active segments along the ring contour. This mode can enhance active-passive phase separation in the state of active topological glass when both diffusional and conformational relaxation of the rings are significantly suppressed. Within the observational time, we see no systematic trends in the positioning of the separated active domains within the confining sphere. The arrested state exhibits coherent stochastic rotations. We discuss possible connections of the conformational and dynamic features of the system to chromosomes enclosed in the nucleus of a living cell.

Project description:The glass transition in soft matter systems is generally triggered by an increase in packing fraction or a decrease in temperature. It has been conjectured that the internal topology of the constituent particles, such as polymers, can cause glassiness too. However, the conjecture relies on immobilizing a fraction of the particles and is therefore difficult to fulfill experimentally. Here we show that in dense solutions of circular polymers containing (active) segments of increased mobility, the interplay of the activity and the topology of the polymers generates an unprecedented glassy state of matter. The active isotropic driving enhances mutual ring threading to the extent that the rings can relax only in a cooperative way, which dramatically increases relaxation times. Moreover, the observed phenomena feature similarities with the conformation and dynamics of the DNA fibre in living nuclei of higher eukaryotes.

Anisotropic Fabry-Perot resonant states confined within nano-steps on the topological insulator surface.

Project description:The peculiar nature of topological surface states, such as absence of backscattering, weak anti-localization, and quantum anomalous Hall effect, has been demonstrated mainly in bulk and film of topological insulator (TI), using surface sensitive probes and bulk transport probes. However, it is equally important and experimentally challenging to confine massless Dirac fermions with nano-steps on TI surfaces. This potential structure has similar ground with linearly-dispersed photons in Fabry-Pérot resonators, while reserving fundamental differences from well-studied Fabry-Pérot resonators and quantum corrals on noble metal surfaces. In this paper, we study the massless Dirac fermions confined within steps along the x (Γ-K) or y (Γ-M) direction on the TI surface, and the Fabry-Pérot-like resonances in the electronic local density of states (LDOS) between the steps are found. Due to the remarkable warping effect in the topological surface states, the LDOS confined in the step-well running along Γ-M direction exhibit anisotropic resonance patterns as compared to those in the step-well along Γ-K direction. The transmittance properties and spin orientation of Dirac fermion in both cases are also anisotropic in the presence of warping effect.

Amorphous topological superconductivity in a Shiba glass.

Project description:Topological states of matter support quantised nondissipative responses and exotic quantum particles that cannot be accessed in common materials. The exceptional properties and application potential of topological materials have triggered a large-scale search for new realisations. Breaking away from the popular trend focusing almost exclusively on crystalline symmetries, we introduce the Shiba glass as a platform for amorphous topological quantum matter. This system consists of an ensemble of randomly distributed magnetic atoms on a superconducting surface. We show that subgap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states on the magnetic moments form a topological superconducting phase at critical density despite a complete absence of spatial order. Experimental signatures of the amorphous topological state can be obtained by scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements probing the topological edge mode. Our discovery demonstrates the physical feasibility of amorphous topological quantum matter, presenting a concrete route to fabricating new topological systems from nontopological materials with random dopants.

Active boundary layers in confined active nematics.

Project description:The role of boundary layers in conventional liquid crystals is commonly related to the mesogen anchoring on confining walls. In the classical view, anchoring enslaves the orientational field of the passive material under equilibrium conditions. In this work, we show that an active nematic can develop active boundary layers that topologically polarize the confining walls. We find that negatively-charged defects accumulate in the boundary layer, regardless of the wall curvature, and they influence the overall dynamics of the system to the point of fully controlling the behavior of the active nematic in situations of strong confinement. Further, we show that wall defects exhibit behaviors that are essentially different from those of their bulk counterparts, such as high motility or the ability to recombine with another defect of like-sign topological charge. These exotic behaviors result from a change of symmetry induced by the wall in the director field around the defect. Finally, we suggest that the collective dynamics of wall defects might be described in terms of a model equation for one-dimensional spatio-temporal chaos.

Sequence Multiplicity within Spherical Nucleic Acids.

Project description:The synthesis and evaluation of spherical nucleic acids (SNAs) incorporating two physically and chemically distinct classes of oligonucleotides (ODNs) at programmed ratios are described. These SNAs are single entity agents that enter the same target cell at defined stoichiometries, and as such allow one to control important cell signaling and regulatory processes. To study the effect of sequence multiplicity within such structures, we synthesized SNAs consisting of a mixture of class A CpG and class B CpG, immunostimulatory ODNs that activate two different toll-like receptor 9 signaling pathways, each in a sequence-specific fashion. These dual-CpG SNAs exhibit high cellular uptake and codelivery of the two ODNs, relative to mixtures of the linear ODN counterparts, and remain highly associated inside the cell over time. Furthermore, the dual-CpG SNAs augment dendritic cell maturation, compared to the same amounts of oligonucleotides delivered in linear or SNA form but not conjugated to one another. Consequently, these structures constitute a platform for designing oligonucleotide-based combination therapeutics with highly tailorable activities.

Microfluidic control over topological states in channel-confined nematic flows.

Project description:Compared to isotropic liquids, orientational order of nematic liquid crystals makes their rheological properties more involved, and thus requires fine control of the flow parameters to govern the orientational patterns. In microfluidic channels with perpendicular surface alignment, nematics discontinuously transition from perpendicular structure at low flow rates to flow-aligned structure at high flow rates. Here we show how precise tuning of the driving pressure can be used to stabilize and manipulate a previously unresearched topologically protected chiral intermediate state which arises before the homeotropic to flow-aligned transition. We characterize the mechanisms underlying the transition and construct a phenomenological model to describe the critical behaviour and the phase diagram of the observed chiral flow state, and evaluate the effect of a forced symmetry breaking by introduction of a chiral dopant. Finally, we induce transitions on demand through channel geometry, application of laser tweezers, and careful control of the flow rate.

Single molecule sensing of amyloid-β aggregation by confined glass nanopores.

Project description:We have developed a glass nanopore based single molecule tool to investigate the dynamic oligomerization and aggregation process of Aβ1-42 peptides. The intrinsic differences in the molecular size and surface charge of amyloid aggregated states could be distinguished through single molecule induced characteristic current fluctuation. More importantly, our results reveal that the neurotoxic Aβ1-42 oligomer tends to adsorb onto the solid surface of nanopores, which may explain its instability and highly neurotoxic features.

A facile synthesis of mono dispersed spherical silver doped bioactive glass nanoparticle.

Project description:Bioactive glasses have attracted enormous attention in the field of biomaterials for dental and medical applications. Incorporation of antibacterial ions within BGs has been proved to be a promising approach to fortify their bactericidal character. In this study, homogenous BGs containing silver (Ag) ions were synthesized by sol-gel method. Subsequently, the presence of the embedded ions were characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Moreover, released ions were measured in simulated body fluid (SBF) and their antibacterial effectiveness was further verified using minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests. A crystalline hydroxyapatite layer was formed on the Ag-BG surfaces at day 5 approved by X-ray diffraction indicating the preserved bioactivity. The resultant uniform, mono-dispersed and dense nanoparticles show 19 great potential for a range of orthopedic and dental applications.

Topological band structure via twisted photons in a degenerate cavity.

Project description:Synthetic dimensions based on particles' internal degrees of freedom, such as frequency, spatial modes and arrival time, have attracted significant attention. They offer ideal large-scale lattices to simulate nontrivial topological phenomena. Exploring more synthetic dimensions is one of the paths toward higher dimensional physics. In this work, we design and experimentally control the coupling among synthetic dimensions consisting of the intrinsic photonic orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum degrees of freedom in a degenerate optical resonant cavity, which generates a periodically driven spin-orbital coupling system. We directly characterize the system's properties, including the density of states, energy band structures and topological windings, through the transmission intensity measurements. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for exploring the spatial modes of twisted photons as the synthetic dimension, which paves the way to design rich topological physics in a highly compact platform.
