Project description:The interface robustness and spatial arrangement of functional molecules on metallic nanomaterials play a key part in the potential applications of functional nano-objects. The design of mechanically stable and electronically coupled attachments with the underlying metal is essential to bring specific desirable properties to the resulting hybrid materials. In this context, rigid multipodal platforms constitute a unique opportunity for the controllable grafting of functionality. Herein, we provide for the first time an in-depth description of the interface between gold nanorods and a chemically-grafted multipodal platform based on diazonium salts. Thanks to Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies and theoretical modeling, we deliver insights on the structural and electronic properties of the hybrid material. More importantly, it allows for the accurate assignment of Raman bands. The combination of experimental and theoretical results establishes the formation of four carbon-gold anchors for the calix[4]arene macrocycle leading to the exceptional stability of the functionalized nano-objects. Our results lay the foundations for the future design of robust and versatile platforms.

Project description:We report the synthesis and characterization of two diastereomeric phosphoramidite calix[4]pyrrole cavitands and their corresponding gold(I) complexes, 2in•Au(I)•Cl and 2out•Au(I)•Cl, featuring the metal center directed inward and outward with respect to their aromatic cavity. We studied the catalytic activity of the complexes in the hydration of a series of propargyl esters as the benchmarking reaction. All substrates were equipped with a six-membered ring substituent either lacking or including a polar group featuring different hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) capabilities. We designed the substrates with the polar group to form 1:1 inclusion complexes of different stabilities with the catalysts. In the case of 2in•Au(I)•OTf, the 1:1 complex placed the alkynyl group of the bound substrate close to the metal center. We compared the obtained results with those of a model phosphoramidite gold(I) complex lacking a calix[4]pyrrole cavity. We found that for all catalysts, the presence of an increasingly polar HBA group in the substrate provoked a decrease in the hydration rate constants. We attributed this result to the competing coordination of the HBA group of the substrate for the Au(I) metal center of the catalysts.

Project description:Some examples of atropoisomeric pseudorotaxanes in which the isomerism arises by the different conformations adopted by the wheel are reported here. Upon threading hexahexyloxycalix[6]arene 1 with ammonium axles 2+ or 3+ , bearing biphenyl or trifluoromethylbenzyl moieties, respectively, two atropoisomeric pseudorotaxanes were formed in which the calix[6]-wheel 1 adopts the 1,2,3-alternate and cone conformations. The interconversion between them cannot be obtained by simple rotation around the ArCH2Ar bonds of the calixarene wheel, which is blocked by the presence of the axle inside its cavity. Therefore, it can only be obtained through a mechanism of de-threading/re-threading of the axle. In all the examined cases, the 1,2,3-alternate and cone atropoisomers are, respectively, the kinetic and the thermodynamic ones.

Project description:With an inwardly directed reactive center and a well-defined binding pocket, Au(I) functionalized resorcin[4]arene cavitands have been shown to catalyze molecular transformations. The reactivity profiles that emerge differ from other Au(I) catalysts. The added constraint of a binding pocket gives rise to the possibility that the substrates might have to fit into the resorcinarene pocket; our hypothesis is that substrates that match the available space have different reaction outcomes than those that do not. Herein we report on the intramolecular cyclization of alkyne-aromatic substrates with variable alkynes and aromatic composition. We see that scaffold size most drastically dictates reactivity, especially when the substrate's features are particularly designed. The results of these experiments add to the veritable goldmine of information about the selectivity in catalysis that cavitands offer.

Project description:We have recently introduced the concept of "Platonic micelles", the preference of spherical micelles to specific aggregation numbers mostly coinciding with the number of faces of platonic solids. This effect was observed on bulky, mostly calix[4]arene-based surfactant systems with small aggregation numbers. The preferred aggregation numbers result in better sphere coverage, highliting the packing and the "protection" of hydrophobic cores from the aqueous solvent as the most important factor for this preference. In the present study we further explore the interactions that drive the packing of the highly charged PACaL3 surfactant into highly symmetrical hexameric micelles. We performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations that yielded a large set of structures and an ensemble in good agreement with the experimental Small Angle X-ray Scattering data was selected. The geometry and the rigidity of the calix[4]arene group with proper tail length and headgroup volume are the driving forces for the high symmetry and monodispersity of the micelle. The charge of the headgroups is mainly responsible for inhibiting the formation of higher order structures. Sodium, shown to be important for the stability of the micelle, is not directly interacting with the micelle implying that the calix[4]arene ring is a C2ν symmetry conformation.

Project description:In order to understand the still-poorly understood interplay between calix[4]arene conformations and cation and anion recognition in multicomponent systems, the ion pair receptors 1 and 2 were synthesized. In solution and in the solid state, the calix[4]arene subunit of receptor 1 adopts a cone conformation, while that of 2 interconverts between the cone and the partial cone conformation. These geometric features differ from previous systems where the calix[4]arene moiety was locked in the 1,3-alternate conformation. A combination of 1H NMR spectroscopic analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that receptor 1 binds the fluoride and the chloride anion via significantly different binding modes, displaying, for instance, 1 : 1 and 2 : 3 binding stoichiometries with CsF and CsCl, respectively. In the case of 2, the conformation of the calix[4]arene constituent of 2 is highly dependent on the size and quantity of anions present. For example, upon treatment of 2 with the fluoride anion (as both the TBA+ and Cs+ salts), the calix[4]arene unit coexists as cone and partial cone conformers that are inter-convertible. In the presence of excess CsF, the aromatic rings of the calix[4]arene subunit becomes locked in the pinched cone conformation with the result that an ion pair-mediated coordination polymer is formed. In the presence of excess CsCl, the calix[4]arene unit of 2 adopts only the partial cone conformation stabilized by aryl CH-anion hydrogen bonding interactions. The present systems constitute a rare set of related receptors wherein the effects of conformational changes are so tightly coupled with ion recognition.

Project description:Here, we present an electrochemical sensor based on gold electrodes modified with calix[4]arene functionalized with carboxypiperidino groups at the upper rim. It has been demonstrated that these groups are involved in a complex formation with dopamine (DA) on the surface of gold electrodes. The supramolecular complex calix[4]arene-DA created on the gold electrode surface has been characterized electrochemically and the measuring conditions have been optimized. The presented sensor displayed a detection limit in the pM range. The DA determination was performed successfully in the presence of ascorbic acid, uric acid and selected neurotransmitters.

Project description:A set of 6- to 24-valent clusters was constructed with terminal deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) inhibitory heads through C6 or C9 linkers by way of Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions between mono- or trivalent azido-armed iminosugars and calix[8]arene scaffolds differing in their valency and their rigidity but not in their size. The power of multivalency to upgrade the inhibition potency of the weak DNJ inhibitor (monovalent DNJ Ki being at 322 and 188 µM for C6 or C9 linkers, respectively) was evaluated on the model glycosidase Jack Bean α-mannosidase (JBα-man). Although for the clusters with the shorter C6 linker the rigidity of the scaffold was essential, these parameters had no influence for clusters with C9 chains: all of them showed rather good relative affinity enhancements per inhibitory epitopes between 70 and 160 highlighting the sound combination of the calix[8]arene core and the long alkyl arms. Preliminary docking studies were performed to get insights into the preferred binding modes.

Project description:The title compound, C42H48O6, was obtained via formyl-ation of 25,26,27,28-tetra-propoxycalix[4]arene with dichloro-methyl methyl ether and tin tetra-chloride. It adopts a pinched cone conformation, which leads to an open cavity. The two opposite aromatic rings bearing formyl groups are almost parallel, making a dihedral angle of 29.1 (2)°. The other pair of opposite rings are close to being perpendicular, making a dihedral angle of 73.6 (1)°. Adjacent rings are almost perpendicular, making dihedral angles of 78.8 (2), 81.6 (1), 78.2 (1) and 74.7 (1)°.
