Study design

Psychometric study, transverse study.

Objective

To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Moorong Self Efficacy Scale (MSES) in the Italian population with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).

Participants

65 people with SCI.

Setting

The Italian version of the MSES (MSES-IT) was administered to the participants recruited by two Italian Spinal Units.

Methods

MSES assesses confidence in the performance of daily activities. The original scale was translated from English into Italian using international guidelines. MSES-IT's internal consistency and inter-rater reliability were examined through the Cronbach alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Its concurrent validity was assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficients with the Italian version of the Spinal Cord Independence Measure-Self Reported (SCIM-SR) and the Italian version of the Quality-of-Life Assessment Questionnaire (SF-36).

Results

The MSES-IT was administered to 65 subjects. Cronbach's alpha for the MSES-IT was 0.87, and the test-retest reliability (ICC) was 0.99 (95% Confidence Interval). The validity analysis showed significant moderate correlations (0.30 < ρ < 0.44) between the MSES-IT and the following components of SF-36: Role limitations physical health; Role limitations emotional problems; Emotional well-being; General health. However, no correlations emerged between MSES-IT and SCIM-SR.

Conclusions

This study showed strong values of Cronbach's alpha and ICC of MSES-IT that make it a useful clinical and research tool. Rehabilitation can improve quality of life by targeting low-efficacy factors in people with spinal cord injury, which is possible because an individual's self-efficacy related to SCI can help determine participation in daily activities and social activities, work, and other life events.

Project description:Objectives: The implementation of obstetric hybrid simulation and interprofessional collaboration between midwives and anesthetists in labor emergencies fostered the need to evaluate the impact of such a program. The original Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) assesses interprofessional attitudes among health professional students and includes the 2011 and 2016 Interprofessional Collaborative Practice report competency domains. The purpose of this study was to create a German version of the IPAS (G-IPAS) to use for the education of healthcare students. Methods: We performed the translation and validation of the IPAS in five steps: translation to German according to the International Society of Pharmaeconomics and Outcome Research guidelines; nine cognitive interviews with healthcare professionals and students;calculation of the Content Validity Index (CVI) by expert opinion; exploratory factor analysis (EFA); and internal consistency by Cronbach's alpha. All study participants gave written informed consent and the cantonal ethics committee waived further ethical approval. Results: The cognitive interviews led to replacement of single-item wording. We retained 27 items for CVI analysis. The averaged overall CVI was 0.79, with 15 items ≥0.89. 185 students (70 medicine, 51 nursing, 48 physiotherapy, and 16 midwifery) contributed with data for the EFA and it produced three subscales. "Teamwork, roles, and responsibilities" with factor loadings ≥0.49, "Patient-centeredness" with factor loadings ≥0.31, and "Community-centeredness" with factor loadings ≥0.57. Two items of the total scale were deleted, and four items were redistributed to another subscale. Cronbach's alpha for the overall G-IPAS scale was 0.87. After deleting and redistributing items in subscales, a new Scale-CVI/Average was calculated and was 0.82. Conclusions: Based on a rigorous validation process, the G-IPAS provides a reliable tool to assess attitudes towards interprofessional education among different healthcare professions in German-speaking countries.

Project description:BackgroundSelf-efficacy concerns individuals' beliefs in their capability to exercise control in specific situations and complete tasks successfully. In people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), self-efficacy has been associated with physical activity levels and quality of life. As a validated German language self-efficacy scale for PwMS is missing the aims of this study were to translate the Unidimensional Self-Efficacy Scale for Multiple Sclerosis (USE-MS) into German, establish face and content validity and cultural adaptation of the German version for PwMS in Austria. A further aim was to validate the German USE-MS (USE-MS-G) in PwMS.MethodsPermission to translate and validate the USE-MS was received from the scale developers. Following guidelines for translation and validation of questionnaires and applying Bandura's concept of self-efficacy, the USE-MS was forward-backward translated with content and face validity established. Cultural adaptation for Austria was performed using cognitive patient interviews. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, Person separation index and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient. Rasch analysis was employed to assess construct validity. Comparison was made to scales for resilience, general self-efficacy, anxiety and depression, multiple sclerosis fatigue and health-related quality of life. Data were also pooled with an historic English dataset to compare the English and German language versions.ResultsThe translation and cultural adaptation were successfully performed in the adaptation process of the USE-MS-G. Pretesting was conducted in 30 PwMS, the validation of the final USE-MS-G involved 309 PwMS with minimal to severe disability. The USE-MS-G was found to be valid against the Rasch model when fitting scale data using a bifactor solution of two super-items. It was shown to be unidimensional, free from differential item functioning and well targeted to the study population. Excellent convergent and known-groups validity, internal consistency, person separation reliability and test-retest reliability were shown for the USE-MS-G. Pooling of the English and German datasets confirmed invariance of item difficulties between languages.ConclusionThe USE-MS-G is a robust, valid and reliable scale to assess self-efficacy in PwMS and can generate interval level data on an equivalent metric to the UK version.Trial registrationISRCTN Registry; ISRCTN14843579 ; prospectively registered on 02. 01. 2019.

Project description:BackgroundPatients with advanced kidney disease suffer from burdensome symptoms, which should be assessed by valid and reliable patient-reported outcome measures. This study aimed to provide a translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of the Czech version of the IPOS-r.MethodsThe IPOS-r was translated to Czech and culturally adapted using cognitive interviews. During the validation phase, patients and staff in dialysis centres and outpatient renal clinics completed the IPOS-r. Internal consistency was tested with Cronbach's alpha, its reliability via intraclass correlation coefficient for total IPOS-r score, and weighted Kappa (for test-retest and interrater reliability of individual items). Convergent validity was tested with Spearman correlation to Kidney Disease Quality of Life Survey-Short Form 1.2 (KDQOL-SF 1.2). We assessed sensitivity to change using a distribution-based approach.ResultsTwo sets of translators independently performed forward and backward translations of the IPOS-r. Ten patients and ten health care professionals participated in cognitive pre-testing. The sample size for validation included 88 patients (mean age 66 ± SD13.8; 58% men) who were treated with haemodialysis (70.5%), home haemodialysis (5.5%), peritoneal dialysis (3%), and conservative management (21%). Cronbach's alpha was 0.72, and the intraclass correlation was 0.84 for test-retest reliability and 0.73 for interrater reliability. The IPOS-r correlated with KDQOL-SF 1.2 had a rho between 0.4-0.8 for most of the IPOS-r items, showing good convergent validity. The IPOS-r measure is feasible and takes 9 minutes to complete. Patients who reported a change in health status after 1 month demonstrated a total IPOS-r score change of eight points in both positive and negative directions.ConclusionsThe process of translation and cultural adaptation of the IPOS-r was successful, and the Czech IPOS-r measure is a valid and reliable tool. The Czech IPOS-r can be used to assess symptoms in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.Trial registrationGAUK [82121].
