Drone-Mountable Gas Sensing Platform Using Graphene Chemiresistors for Remote In-Field Monitoring.

ABSTRACT: We present the design, fabrication, and testing of a drone-mountable gas sensing platform for environmental monitoring applications. An array of graphene-based field-effect transistors in combination with commercial humidity and temperature sensors are used to relay information by wireless communication about the presence of airborne chemicals. We show that the design, based on an ESP32 microcontroller combined with a 32-bit analog-to-digital converter, can be used to achieve an electronic response similar, within a factor of two, to state-of-the-art laboratory monitoring equipment. The sensing platform is then mounted on a drone to conduct field tests, on the ground and in flight. During these tests, we demonstrate a one order of magnitude reduction in environmental noise by reducing contributions from humidity and temperature fluctuations, which are monitored in real-time with a commercial sensor integrated to the sensing platform. The sensing device is controlled by a mobile application and uses LoRaWAN, a low-power, wide-area networking protocol, for real-time data transmission to the cloud, compatible with Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Project description:ObjectiveRemote patient monitoring (RPM) holds potential to enable more individualized and effective care for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D), but requires population analytics to focus limited clinical resources on patients most in need. We explored the feasibility of RPM from patient and provider standpoints using a commercially available data analytic platform (glooko Population Health) among a cohort of youth with T1D.Study designPatients aged 1-20 years with established T1D (≥12 months) and CGM use (≥3 months) were recruited to participate. Participants' CGM devices were connected to the glooko app and linked to the research team's glooko account during a one-month baseline period. This was followed by a six-month intervention period during which participants with >15% of glucose values >250 mg/dl or >5% of values <70 mg/dl each month were contacted with personalized diabetes management recommendations. Participants were surveyed about their experiences, and effects on glycemic control were estimated via change in glucose management indicator (GMI) generated from CGM data at baseline and completion. Changes in time spent within various glucose ranges were also evaluated, and all glycemic metrics were compared to a non-randomized control group via difference-in-difference regression, adjusting for baseline characteristics.ResultsRemote data-sharing was successful for 36 of 39 participants (92%). Between 33%-66% of participants merited outreach each month, and clinician outreach required a median of 10 minutes per event. RPM was reported to be helpful by 94% of participants. RPM was associated with a GMI change of -0.25% (P=0.047) for the entire cohort, and stratified analysis revealed greatest treatment effects among participants with baseline GMI of 8.0-9.4% (GMI change of -0.68%, P=0.047; 19.84% reduction in time spent >250 mg/dl, P=0.005).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the feasibility of RPM for patients with T1D using a commercially available population health platform, and suggests that RPM with clinician-initiated outreach may be particularly beneficial for patients with suboptimal glycemic control at entry. Project description:Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple cereal in the diet of more than half of the world's population. Within the European Union, Spain is a leader in rice production due to its climate and tradition, accounting for 26% of total EU production in 2020. The Valencian rice area covers around 15,000 hectares and is strongly influenced by biotic and abiotic factors. An important biotic factor affecting rice production is weeds, which compete with rice for sunlight, water and nutrients. The dominant weed in Spain is Echinochloa spp., although wild rice is becoming increasingly important. Rice cultivation in Valencia takes place in the area of L'Albufera de Valencia, which is a natural park, i.e., a special protection area. In this natural area, the use of phytosanitary products is limited, so it is necessary to use the minimum amount possible. Therefore, the objective of this work is to evaluate the possibility of using remote sensing effectively to determine the effectiveness of the application of the herbicide cyhalofop-butyl by drone for the control of Echinochloa spp. in rice crops in Valencia. The results will be compared with those obtained by using sterilisation machines (electric backpack sprayers) to apply the herbicide. To evaluate the effectiveness of the application, the reflectance obtained by the satellite sensors in the red and near infrared (NIR) wavelengths, as well as the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), were used. The remote sensing results were analysed and complemented by the number of rice plants and weeds per area, plant dry weight, leaf area, BBCH phenological state, SPAD index values, chlorophyll content and relative growth rate. Remote sensing is validated as an effective tool for determining the efficacy of an herbicide in controlling weeds applied by both the drone and the electric backpack sprayer. The weeds slowed down their development after the treatment. Depending on the phenological state of the crop and the active ingredient of the herbicide, these results are applicable to other areas with different climatic and environmental conditions.
