Improving the capacity of zinc-ion batteries through composite defect engineering.

ABSTRACT: Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIB) are favored because of their low cost and high safety. However, as the most widely used cathodes, the rate performance and long-term cycle performance of manganese-based oxides are very worrying, which greatly affects their commercialization. Here, MnO₂ with composite defects of cation doping and oxygen vacancies was synthesized for the first time. Cation doping promoted the diffusion and transport of H⁺ and oxygen vacancies weakened the zinc-oxygen bond, allowing more electrons to be added to the charge and discharge process. The combination of these makes α-MnO₂ obtain a specific capacity of up to 346 mA h g^-1. This inspired us to use different combinations of defect engineering strategies on the materials which can be implemented as a potential method to improve performance for the modification of ZIB cathode materials, such as cation vacancies and anion doping.

Breaking the trade-off between capacity and stability in vanadium-based zinc-ion batteries.

Project description:Water in electrolytes is a double-edged sword in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). While it allows for proton insertion in the cathode, resulting in a significant increase in capacity compared to that of organic ZIBs, it also causes damage to electrodes, leading to performance degradation. To overcome the capacity-stability trade-off, organic solvents containing a small amount of water are proposed to mitigate the harmful effects of water while ensuring sufficient proton insertion. Remarkably, in a Zn(OTf)2 electrolyte using 8% H2O in acetonitrile as the solvent, Zn‖(NH4)0.5V2O5·0.5H2O exhibited a capacity as high as 490 mA h g-1 at a low current (0.3 A g-1), with a capacity retention of 80% even after 9000 cycles at high current (6 A g-1), simultaneously achieving the high capacity as in pure aqueous electrolytes and excellent stability as in organic electrolytes. We also found that the water content strongly impacts the kinetics and reversibility of ion insertion/extraction and zinc stripping/plating. Furthermore, compared to electrolytes with pure acetonitrile or H2O solvents, electrolytes with only 8% H2O in acetonitrile provide higher capacities at temperatures ranging from 0 to -50 °C. These discoveries enhance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in ZIBs and present a promising path toward enhancing electrolyte solutions for the creation of high-performance ZIBs.

Cathode-Electrolyte Interface Modification by Binder Engineering for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A stable cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) is crucial for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), but it is less investigated. Commercial binder poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is widely used without scrutinizing its suitability and cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) in AZIBs. A water-soluble binder is developed that facilitated the in situ formation of a CEI protecting layer tuning the interfacial morphology. By combining a polysaccharide sodium alginate (SA) with a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the surface morphology, and charge storage kinetics can be confined from diffusion-dominated to capacitance-controlled processes. The underpinning mechanism investigates experimentally in both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives demonstrate that the COO- from SA acts as an anionic polyelectrolyte facilitating the adsorption of Zn2+ ; meanwhile fluoride atoms on PTFE backbone provide hydrophobicity to break desolvation penalty. The hybrid binder is beneficial in providing a higher areal flux of Zn2+ at the CEI, where the Zn-Birnessite MnO2 battery with the hybrid binder exhibits an average specific capacity 45.6% higher than that with conventional PVDF binders; moreover, a reduced interface activation energy attained fosters a superior rate capability and a capacity retention of 99.1% in 1000 cycles. The hybrid binder also reduces the cost compared to the PVDF/NMP, which is a universal strategy to modify interface morphology.

Zinc-Ion Storage Mechanism of Polyaniline for Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Aqueous multivalent ion batteries, especially aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), have promising energy storage application due to their unique merits of safety, high ionic conductivity, and high gravimetric energy density. To improve their electrochemical performance, polyaniline (PANI) is often chosen to suppress cathode dissolution. Herein, this work focuses on the zinc ion storage behavior of a PANI cathode. The energy storage mechanism of PANI is associated with four types of protonated/non-protonated amine or imine. The PANI cathode achieves a high capacity of 74 mAh g-1 at 0.3 A g-1 and maintains 48.4% of its initial discharge capacity after 1000 cycles. It also demonstrates an ultrahigh diffusion coefficient of 6.25 × 10-9~7.82 × 10-8 cm-2 s-1 during discharging and 7.69 × 10-10~1.81 × 10-7 cm-2 s-1 during charging processes, which is one or two orders of magnitude higher than other reported studies. This work sheds a light on developing PANI-composited cathodes in rechargeable aqueous ZIBs energy storage devices.

Bimetallic CoMoS Composite Anchored to Biocarbon Fibers as a High-Capacity Anode for Li-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Our work reports the hydrothermal synthesis of a bimetallic composite CoMoS, followed by the addition of cellulose fibers and its subsequent carbonization under Ar atmosphere (CoMoS@C). For comparison, CoMoS was heat-treated under the same conditions and referred as bare-CoMoS. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that CoMoS@C composite matches with the CoMoS4 phase with additional peaks corresponding to MoO3 and CoMoO4 phases, which probably arise from air exposure during the carbonization process. Scanning electron microscopy images of CoMoS@C exhibit how the CoMoS material is anchored to the surface of carbonized cellulose fibers. As anode material, CoMoS@C shows a superior performance than bare-CoMoS. The CoMoS@C composite presents an initial high discharge capacity of ∼1164 mA h/g and retains a high specific discharge capacity of ∼715 mA h/g after 200 cycles at a current density of 500 mA/g compared to that of bare-CoMoS of 102 mA h/g. The high specific capacity and good cycling stability could be attributed to the synergistic effects of CoMoS and carbonized cellulose fibers. The use of biomass in the anode material represents a very easy and cost-effective way to improve the electrochemical Li-ion battery performance.

Improving Cycle Life of Zinc-Air Batteries with Calcium Ion Additive in Electrolyte or Separator.

Project description:The electrolyte carbonation and the resulting air electrode plugging are the primary factors limiting the cycle life of aqueous alkaline zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this work, calcium ion (Ca2+) additives were introduced into the electrolyte and the separator to resolve the above issues. Galvanostatic charge-discharge cycle tests were carried out to verify the effect of Ca2+ on electrolyte carbonation. With the modified electrolyte and separator, the cycle life of ZABs was improved by 22.2% and 24.7%, respectively. Ca2+ was introduced into the ZAB system to preferentially react with CO32- rather than K+ and then precipitated granular CaCO3 prior to K2CO3, which was deposited on the surface of the Zn anode and air cathode to form a flower-like CaCO3 layer, thereby prolonging its cycle life.

Nanoforging Single Layer MoSe2 Through Defect Engineering with Focused Helium Ion Beams.

Project description:Development of devices and structures based on the layered 2D materials critically hinges on the capability to induce, control, and tailor the electronic, transport, and optoelectronic properties via defect engineering, much like doping strategies have enabled semiconductor electronics and forging enabled introduction the of iron age. Here, we demonstrate the use of a scanning helium ion microscope (HIM) for tailoring the functionality of single layer MoSe2 locally, and decipher associated mechanisms at the atomic level. We demonstrate He(+) beam bombardment that locally creates vacancies, shifts the Fermi energy landscape and increases the Young's modulus of elasticity. Furthermore, we observe for the first time, an increase in the B-exciton photoluminescence signal from the nanoforged regions at the room temperature. The approach for precise defect engineering demonstrated here opens opportunities for creating functional 2D optoelectronic devices with a wide range of customizable properties that include operating in the visible region.

Dual Strategies of Metal Preintercalation and In Situ Electrochemical Oxidization Operating on MXene for Enhancement of Ion/Electron Transfer and Zinc-Ion Storage Capacity in Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Project description:As an emerging two-dimensional material, MXenes exhibit enormous potentials in the fields of energy storage and conversion, due to their superior conductivity, effective surface chemistry, accordion-like layered structure, and numerous ordered nanochannels. However, interlayer accumulation and chemical sluggishness of structural elements have hampered the demonstration of the superiorities of MXenes. By metal preintercalation and in situ electrochemical oxidization strategies on V2 CTx , MXene has enlarged its interplanar spacing and excited the outermost vanadium atoms to achieve frequent transfer and high storage capacity of Zn ions in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Benefiting from the synergistic effects of these strategies, the resulting VOx /Mn-V2 C electrode exhibits the high capacity of 530 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , together with a remarkable energy density of 415 W h kg-1 and a power density of 5500 W kg-1 . Impressively, the electrode delivers excellent cycling stability with Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100% in 2000 cycles at 5 A g-1 . The satisfactory electrochemical performances bear comparison with those in reported vanadium-based and MXene-based aqueous ZIBs. This work provides a new methodology for safe preparation of outstanding vanadium-based electrodes and extends the applications of MXenes in the energy storage field.

Defect engineering on V2O3 cathode for long-cycling aqueous zinc metal batteries.

Project description:Defect engineering is a strategy that is attracting widespread attention for the possibility of modifying battery active materials in order to improve the cycling stability of the electrodes. However, accurate investigation and quantification of the effect of the defects on the electrochemical energy storage performance of the cell are not trivial tasks. Herein, we report the quantification of vanadium-defective clusters (i.e., up to 5.7%) in the V2O3 lattice via neutron and X-ray powder diffraction measurements, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and synchrotron-based X-ray analysis. When the vanadium-defective V2O3 is employed as cathode active material in an aqueous Zn coin cell configuration, capacity retention of about 81% after 30,000 cycles at 5 A g-1 is achieved. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the vanadium-defective clusters can provide favorable sites for reversible Zn-ion storage. Moreover, the vanadium-defective clusters allow the storage of Zn ions in V2O3, which reduces the electrostatic interaction between the host material and the multivalent ions.

Molybdenum Disulfide-Zinc Oxide Photocathodes for Photo-Rechargeable Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Systems for harvesting and storing solar energy have found practical applications ranging from solar farms to autonomous smart devices. Generally, these energy solutions consist of solar cells for light harvesting and rechargeable batteries to match the solar energy supply to consumption demands. Rather than having a separate energy harvesting and storing device, we report photo-rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (hν-ZIBs) using a photoactive cathode composed of layer-by-layer grown zinc oxide and molybdenum disulfide. These photocathodes are capable of harvesting solar energy and storing it in the same material and alleviate the need for solar cells or power converters. The proposed photocathodes achieve photoconversion efficiencies of ∼1.8% using a 455 nm light source and ∼0.2% of solar-conversion efficiencies. Light not only allows photocharging but also enhances the battery capacity from 245 to 340 mA h g-1 (specific current of 100 mA g-1 and 12 mW cm-2 light intensity at 455 nm). Finally, the proposed hν-ZIBs also demonstrate a capacity retention of ∼82% over 200 cycles.

High-capacity aqueous zinc batteries using sustainable quinone electrodes.

Project description:Quinones, which are ubiquitous in nature, can act as sustainable and green electrode materials but face dissolution in organic electrolytes, resulting in fast fading of capacity and short cycle life. We report that quinone electrodes, especially calix[4]quinone (C4Q) in rechargeable metal zinc batteries coupled with a cation-selective membrane using an aqueous electrolyte, exhibit a high capacity of 335 mA h g-1 with an energy efficiency of 93% at 20 mA g-1 and a long life of 1000 cycles with a capacity retention of 87% at 500 mA g-1. The pouch zinc batteries with a respective depth of discharge of 89% (C4Q) and 49% (zinc anode) can deliver an energy density of 220 Wh kg-1 by mass of both a C4Q cathode and a theoretical Zn anode. We also develop an electrostatic potential computing method to demonstrate that carbonyl groups are active centers of electrochemistry. Moreover, the structural evolution and dissolution behavior of active materials during discharge and charge processes are investigated by operando spectral techniques such as IR, Raman, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies. Our results show that batteries using quinone cathodes and metal anodes in aqueous electrolyte are reliable approaches for mass energy storage.
