New fused conjugated molecules with fused thiophene and pyran units for organic electronic materials.

ABSTRACT: Rigid and planar conjugated molecules have substantial significance due to their potential applications in organic electronics. Herein we report two highly fused ladder type conjugated molecules, TTCTTC and TTTCTTTC, with up to 10 fused rings in which the fused-thiophene rings are fused to the chromeno[6,5,4-def]chromene unit. Both molecules show high HOMO levels and accordingly they can be oxidized into their radical cations with absorptions extending to 1300 nm in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. Thin films of TTCTTC and TTTCTTTC exhibit p-type semiconductor properties with hole mobilities up to 0.39 cm² V^-1 s^-1. Moreover, TTCTTC shows a high fluorescence quantum yield of up to 16.5% in the solid state.

Bithieno Thiophene-Based Small Molecules for Application as Donor Materials for Organic Solar Cells and Hole Transport Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:This quantum mechanical study focuses on the designing of twelve (MPAM1-MPAM12) bithieno thiophene (BTTI) central core-based small molecules to explore optoelectronic properties as donor candidates for organic solar cells (OSCs) and hole transport materials (HTMs) accompanied by enhanced charge mobility for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). MPAM1-MPAM6 have been designed by the substitution of thiophene-bridged end-capped acceptors on both side terminals of reference (MPAR). MPAM7-MPAM12 are tailored by adopting the same tactic on one side terminal only. MPW1PW91/6-311G (d,p) has been employed for all computational simulations. MPAM12 revealed the highest λmax at 639 nm in dichloromethane (DCM) solvent with the lowest E g of 1.78 eV and dipole moment (20.74 D) in the solvent phase, showing excellent miscibility as compared to the reference. All designed chromophores (MPAM1-MPAM12) demonstrated higher estimated V OC and power conversion efficiency (PCE) when compared to MPAR, suggesting their prominent operational efficiency. Among all, MPAM4 manifested the highest PCE (47.86%). MPAM2 portrayed the highest electron mobility (0.0041573 eV) and MPAM3 exhibited the highest hole mobility (0.0047178 eV). The outcomes highlight the adequacy of the planned strategies, paving a new route for the development of small-molecule HTMs for PSCs and donor contributors for OSCs.

Biazulene diimides: a new building block for organic electronic materials.

Project description:Azulene, a 10-π-electron isomer of naphthalene, is a nonbenzenoid bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a beautiful blue color and a large dipole moment. We present here the first class of azulene-based aromatic diimides, 2,2'-biazulene-1,1',3,3'-tetracarboxylic diimides (BAzDIs), which comprise a 2,2'-biazulene moiety and two seven-membered imide groups. DFT calculations, thermal, optical and electrochemical properties of two BAzDI derivatives as well as single crystal analysis and the charge transport behavior were studied. The results demonstrate that BAzDIs have unique photophysical properties and are promising for organic electronic materials.

Introducing a new 7-ring fused diindenone-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene unit as a promising component for organic semiconductor materials.

Project description:A novel π-conjugated molecule, EtH-T-DI-DTT is reported, which is fused, rigid, and planar, featuring the electron-rich dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (DTT) unit in the core of the structure. Adjacent to the electron-donating DTT core, there are indenone units with electron-withdrawing keto groups. To enable solubility in common organic solvents, the fused system is flanked by ethylhexylthiophene groups. The material is a dark, amorphous solid with an onset of absorption at 638 nm in CH2Cl2 solution, which corresponds to an optical gap of 1.94 eV. In films, the absorption onset wavelength is at 701 nm, which corresponds to 1.77 eV. An ionisation energy of 5.5 eV and an electron affinity of 3.3 eV were estimated by cyclic voltammetry measurements. We have applied this new molecule in organic field effect transistors. The material exhibited a p-type mobility up to 1.33 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1.

Colorless Near-Infrared Absorbing Dyes Based on B-N Fused Donor-Acceptor-Donor π-Conjugated Molecules for Organic Phototransistors.

Project description:The introduction of a colorless function to organic electronic devices allows responses to light in the near-infrared (NIR) region and is expected to broaden the applications of these devices. However, the development of a colorless NIR dye remains a challenge due to the lack of a rational molecular design for controlling electronic transitions. In this study, to suppress the π-π* transitions in the visible region, polycyclic donor-acceptor-donor π-conjugated molecules with boron bridges (Py-FNTz-B and IP-FNTz-B) are designed and synthesized, which contain pyrrole or indenopyrrole as donor units with fluorinated naphthobisthiadiazole (FNTz) as an acceptor unit. The pyrrole end-capped Py-FNTz-B shows an absorption band in the NIR region without distinct visible-light absorption, which has led to the establishment of colorless characteristics. The indenopyrrole end-capped IP-FNTz-B shows a narrow optical energy gap of 0.87 eV in films. Time-resolved microwave conductance and field-effect transistors demonstrate the semiconducting characteristics of these molecules, and Py-FNTz-B-based devices function as NIR phototransistors. Theoretical analyses indicate that the combination of a polyene-like electronic structure with orbital symmetry is important to obtain NIR wavelength-selective absorption. This study suggests that a molecular design based on electronic structures can be effective in the development of colorless NIR-absorbing dyes for organic electronics.

Design and Characterization of New D-A Type Electrochromic Conjugated Copolymers Based on Indolo[3,2-b]Carbazole, Isoindigo and Thiophene Units.

Project description:Two new donor-acceptor (D-A) type organic conjugated random copolymers were successfully synthesized by three-component Stille coupling polymerization of indolo[3,2-b]carbazole (ICZ), isoindigo (IID) and thiophene units, namely PITID-X (X = 1 and 2), with the controlled monomer feed ratios of 3:1:4 and 1:1:2, respectively. The strategy of incorporating different alkyl-branched donor/acceptor units and raw material feed ratios facilitated the improvement of optical properties, solubility, conjugated structure, and electrochromic performance. Cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra, kinetic and colorimetric measurements of the spray-coated films were recorded in the fabricated three-electrode cells. The results showed that PITID-2, whose optical/electrical properties were better than that of PITID-1, was the candidate electrochromic material due to low band gap of 1.58 eV accompanying the color changing from cyan (neutral state) to gray (oxidized state). The copolymer also illustrated fast bleaching/coloration response time of 2.04/0.33 and 1.35/1.50 s in a 4 s time interval, high coloration efficiency of 171.52 and 153.08 cm2 C-1 and stable optical contrast of 18% and 58% at the wavelength of 675 and 1600 nm, respectively.

Integrated zwitterionic conjugated poly(carboxybetaine thiophene) as a new biomaterial platform.

Project description:An integrated zwitterionic conjugated polymer-based biomaterial platform was designed and studied to address some of the key challenges of conjugated polymers in biomedical applications. This biomaterial platform consists of conjugated polymer backbones and multifunctional zwitterionic side chains. Zwitterionic materials gain electrical conductivity and interesting optical properties through conjugated polymer backbones, and non-biocompatible conjugated polymers obtain excellent antifouling properties, enhanced electrical conductivity, functional groups of bioconjugation and response to environmental stimuli via multifunctional zwitterionic side chains. This platform can potentially be adapted to a wide range of applications (e.g. bioelectronics, tissue engineering and biofuel cell), which require high performance conducting materials with excellent antifouling/biocompatibility at biointerfaces.

Iodine and Nickel Ions Adsorption by Conjugated Copolymers Bearing Repeating Units of Dicyclopentapyrenyl and Various Thiophene Derivatives.

Project description:The synthesis of three conjugated copolymers TPP1-3 was carried out using a palladium-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition polymerization of 1,6-dibromopyrene with various dialkynyl thiophene derivatives 3a-c. The target copolymers were obtained in excellent yields and high purity, as confirmed by instrumental analyses. TPP1-3 were found to divulge a conspicuous iodine adsorption capacity up to 3900 mg g-1, whereas the adsorption mechanism studies revealed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, recyclability tests of TPP3, the copolymer which revealed the maximum iodine uptake, disclosed its efficient regeneration even after numerous adsorption-desorption cycles. Interestingly, the target copolymers proved promising nickel ions capture efficiencies from water with a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) of 48.5 mg g-1.

Electronic Conductance and Thermopower of Cross-Conjugated and Skipped-Conjugated Molecules in Single-Molecule Junctions.

Project description:We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of a series of thiomethyl (SMe) anchored cross-conjugated molecules featuring an acyclic central bridging ketone and their analogous skipped-conjugated alcohol derivatives. Studies of these molecules in a gold|single-molecule|gold junction using scanning tunneling microscopy-break junction techniques reveal a similar conductance (G) value for both the cross-conjugated molecules and their skipped-conjugated partners. Theoretical studies based on density functional theory of the molecules in their optimum geometries in the junction reveal the reason for this similarity in conductance, as the predicted conductance for the alcohol series of compounds varies more with the tilt angle. Thermopower measurements reveal a higher Seebeck coefficient (S) for the cross-conjugated ketone molecules relative to the alcohol derivatives, with a particularly high S for the biphenyl derivative 3a (-15.6 μV/K), an increase of threefold compared to its alcohol analog. The predicted behavior of the quantum interference (QI) in this series of cross-conjugated molecules is found to be constructive, though the appearance of a destructive QI feature for 3a is due to the degeneracy of the HOMO orbital and may explain the enhancement of the value of S for this molecule.

Conjugated Polymers Containing EDOT Units as Novel Materials for Electrochromic and Resistance Memory Devices.

Project description:Four new multifunctional polymers (P1, P2, P3, and P4) containing EDOT units were synthesized by the Stille coupling reaction. A PL spectrum test found that the introduction of large conjugated groups led to strong fluorescence emission in all polymers. Among the electrochromic and switch properties, these polymer films exhibited reversible color changes, as well as good coloring efficiency. Electrochemical experiments found that the initial oxidation potentials of the polymers were 1.27 V, 1.67 V, 1.78 V, and 1.58 V, respectively. Among them, P3 showed a higher coloring efficiency (283.3 cm2·C-1), and P2 showed a shorter response time (tc = 2.2 s, tb = 2.8 s). These polymers all exhibited electrochromic and resistive switching storage characteristics. They have good solubility in many organic solvents. In the resistance switch memory characteristics, all polymers had obvious memristive properties, and P4 exhibited a larger switch current ratio (2527.42) and a smaller threshold voltage (0.9 V).

Biodegradation of bio-sourced and synthetic organic electronic materials towards green organic electronics.

Project description:Ubiquitous use of electronic devices has led to an unprecedented increase in related waste as well as the worldwide depletion of reserves of key chemical elements required in their manufacturing. The use of biodegradable and abundant organic (carbon-based) electronic materials can contribute to alleviate the environmental impact of the electronic industry. The pigment eumelanin is a bio-sourced candidate for environmentally benign (green) organic electronics. The biodegradation of eumelanin extracted from cuttlefish ink is studied both at 25 °C (mesophilic conditions) and 58 °C (thermophilic conditions) following ASTM D5338 and comparatively evaluated with the biodegradation of two synthetic organic electronic materials, namely copper (II) phthalocyanine (Cu-Pc) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS). Eumelanin biodegradation reaches 4.1% (25 °C) in 97 days and 37% (58 °C) in 98 days, and residual material is found to be without phytotoxic effects. The two synthetic materials, Cu-Pc and PPS, do not biodegrade; Cu-Pc brings about the inhibition of microbial respiration in the compost. PPS appears to be potentially phytotoxic. Finally, some considerations regarding the biodegradation test as well as the disambiguation of "biodegradability" and "bioresorbability" are highlighted.
