Project description:Decomposition of rare-earth tris(N,N'-diisopropyl-2-methylamidinato)metal(III) complexes [RE{MeC(N(iPr)2)}3] (RE(amd)3; RE = Pr(III), Gd(III), Er(III)) and tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)europium(III) (Eu(dpm)3) induced by microwave heating in the ionic liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIm][BF4]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BMIm][NTf2]) and in propylene carbonate (PC) yield oxide-free rare-earth metal nanoparticles (RE-NPs) in [BMIm][NTf2] and PC for RE = Pr, Gd and Er or rare-earth metal-fluoride nanoparticles (REF3-NPs) in the fluoride-donating IL [BMIm][BF4] for RE = Pr, Eu, Gd and Er. The crystalline phases and the absence of significant oxide impurities in RE-NPs and REF3-NPs were verified by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The size distributions of the nanoparticles were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) to an average diameter of (11 ± 6) to (38 ± 17) nm for the REF3-NPs from [BMIm][BF4]. The RE-NPs from [BMIm][NTf2] or PC showed diameters of (1.5 ± 0.5) to (5 ± 1) nm. The characterization was completed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Project description:Magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) comprise a subcategory of ionic liquids (ILs) and contain a paramagnetic metal center allowing them to be readily manipulated by an external magnetic field. While MILs are popularly employed as solvents in catalysis, separations, and organic synthesis, most low viscosity combinations possess a hydrophilic character that limits their use in aqueous matrices. To date, no study has reported the synthesis and characterization of hydrophobic MILs with viscosities similar to those of hydrophilic MILs and organic solvents while simultaneously exhibiting enhanced magnetic and thermal properties. In this study, diglycolic acid esters are employed as ligands to chelate with paramagnetic metals to produce cations that are paired with metal chelates composed of hexafluoroacetylacetonate ligands to form MILs incorporating multiple metal centers in the cation and anion. Viscosity values below 31.6 cP were obtained for these solvents, the lowest ever reported for hydrophobic MILs. Solubilities in nonpolar solvents such as benzene were observed to be as high as 50% (w/v) MIL-to-solvent ratio while being insoluble in water at concentrations as low as 0.01% (w/v). Effective paramagnetic moment values for these solvents ranged from 5.33 to 15.56 Bohr magnetons (μB), with mixed metal MILs containing multiple lanthanides in the anion generally offering higher magnetic susceptibilities. MILs composed of ligands containing octyl substituents were found to possess thermal stabilities up to 190 °C. The synthetic strategies explored in this study exploit the highly tunable nature of the employed cation and anion pairs to design versatile ultra-low viscosity magnetoactive solvents that possess tremendous potential and applicability in liquid-liquid separation systems, catalysis, and microfluidics where the mechanical movement of the solvent can be easily facilitated using electromagnets.

Project description:Liquid metal extraction (LME) for recycling rare-earth elements from magnets is studied, in the present study, to examine its suitability as an environmentally friendly alternative for a circular economy. While Nd (neodymium) extraction efficiency can easily reach almost 100%, based on the high reactivity of Mg (magnesium), Dy (dysprosium) extraction has been limited because of the Dy-Fe intermetallic phase as the main extractive bottleneck. In the present paper, the boro-additive effect is designed thermodynamically and examined in the ternary and quinary systems to improve the selectivity of recovery. Based on the strong chemical affinity between B (boron) and Fe, the effect of excess boron, which is produced by the depletion of B in FeB by Mg, successfully resulted in the formation of Fe2B instead of Dy-Fe bonding. However, the growth of the Fe2B layer, which is the reason for the isolated Mg, leads to the production of other byproducts, rare-earth borides (RB4, R = Nd and Dy), as the side effect. By adjusting the ratio of FeB, the extraction efficiency of Dy over 12 h with FeB addition is improved to 80%, which is almost the same extraction efficiency of the conventional LME process over 24 h.

Project description:The increasing demand for rare earth (RE) elements in advanced materials for permanent magnets, rechargeable batteries, catalysts and lamp phosphors necessitates environmentally friendly approaches for their recovery and separation. Here, we propose a mineralization concept for direct extraction of RE ions with Lamp (lanthanide ion mineralization peptide). In aqueous solution containing various metal ions, Lamp promotes the generation of RE hydroxide species with which it binds to form hydrophobic complexes that accumulate spontaneously as insoluble precipitates, even under physiological conditions (pH ∼6.0). This concept for stabilization of an insoluble lanthanide hydroxide complex with an artificial peptide also works in combination with stable scaffolds like synthetic macromolecules and proteins. Our strategy opens the possibility for selective separation of target metal elements from seawater and industrial wastewater under mild conditions without additional energy input.

Project description:The use of rare earth elements is a growing trend in diverse industrial activities, leading to the need for eco-friendly approaches to their efficient recovery and reuse. The aim of this work is the development of an environmentally friendly and competitive technology for the recovery of those elements from wastewater. Kinetic and equilibria batch assays were performed with zeolite, with and without bacterial biofilm, to entrap rare earth ions from aqueous solution. Continuous assays were also performed in column setups. Over 90% removal of lanthanum and cerium was achieved using zeolite as sorbent, with and without biofilm, decreasing to 70% and 80%, respectively, when suspended Bacillus cereus was used. Desorption from the zeolite reached over 60%, regardless of the tested conditions. When in continuous flow in columns, the removal yield was similar for all of the rare earth elements tested. Lanthanum and cerium were the elements most easily removed by all tested sorbents when tested in single- or multi-solute solutions, in batch and column assays. Rare earth removal from wastewater in open setups is possible, as well as their recovery by desorption processes, allowing a continuous mode of operation.

Project description:Ionic Liquids are a broad group of salts with low melting points that can be specifically tuned for a broad range of applications. Despite being initially considered “green” solvents, their better environmental friendliness compared to traditional solvents has been increasingly challenged. In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular effects of ILs exposure by using RNA-sequencing to study differential gene expression patterns. Thus, we exposed Daphnia magna to 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C2mim]Cl), 1-dodecyl chloride-3-methylimidazolium ([C12mim]Cl) and cholinium chloride ([Chol]Cl). Results suggest that the three ILs share several mechanisms of toxicity, including cellular membrane and cytoskeleton damage, oxidative stress, inhibition of antioxidant enzymes, mitochondrial affectation, changes in protein biosynthesis and energy production, DNA damage, and ultimately, programmed cell death and disease initiation. Overall, the dataset revealed that [C2mim]Cl and [C12mim]Cl were, respectively, the least and the most toxic ILs at the transcriptional level. Also, it is reinforced that [Chol]Cl is not devoid of environmental hazardous potential. Unique gene expression signatures could also be identified for each IL.

Project description:Growing demands for rare earth elements (REEs) have prompted sustainability concerns worldwide. Given the need for sustainable extraction methods amidst REEs, ionic liquids (ILs) have been investigated as tunable extraction substitutes for conventional organic solvents, offering negligible volatility and diverse physical and chemical properties. Recent reports have shown that the introduction of extractants, like N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide (TODGA) or N,N-dioctyldiglycolamic acid (DODGAA), into ILs can provide high selectivity and affinity for REE capture. Precipitate formation has been observed in IL-extractant systems across several studies; however, the molecular interactions that drive this phenomenon have yet to be explored. This study investigates the coordination environment in the precipitate formed between [Yb3+], DODGAA, and the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM+][PF6 -]) IL. The composition of the precipitate was confirmed using several spectroscopic techniques and revealed an underlying hydrogen bonding interaction between the fluorine atom of [PF6 -] anion and -OH of the Yb-DODGAA complex. Computational studies were also conducted to examine the coordination environment of the Yb-TODGA and Yb-DODGAA complexes. The binding affinity of the extractants toward [Yb3+] is analyzed by calculating the associated binding energy values. The results clearly show a stronger binding affinity of the extractants toward [Yb3+], supporting the observed high extraction efficiencies of DODGAA and TODGA.

Project description:The extraction and subsequent separation of individual rare earth elements (REEs) from REE-bearing feedstocks represent a challenging yet essential task for the growth and sustainability of renewable energy technologies. As an important step toward overcoming the technical and environmental limitations of current REE processing methods, we demonstrate a biobased, all-aqueous REE extraction and separation scheme using the REE-selective lanmodulin protein. Lanmodulin was conjugated onto porous support materials using thiol-maleimide chemistry to enable tandem REE purification and separation under flow-through conditions. Immobilized lanmodulin maintains the attractive properties of the soluble protein, including remarkable REE selectivity, the ability to bind REEs at low pH, and high stability over numerous low-pH adsorption/desorption cycles. We further demonstrate the ability of immobilized lanmodulin to achieve high-purity separation of the clean-energy-critical REE pair Nd/Dy and to transform a low-grade leachate (0.043 mol % REEs) into separate heavy and light REE fractions (88 mol % purity of total REEs) in a single column run while using ∼90% of the column capacity. This ability to achieve, for the first time, tandem extraction and grouped separation of REEs from very complex aqueous feedstock solutions without requiring organic solvents establishes this lanmodulin-based approach as an important advance for sustainable hydrometallurgy.

Project description:Cellulose from cotton fibers was functionalized through a dissolution-regeneration process with phosphonate-based ionic liquids (ILs): 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylphosphonate [DIMIM][(MeO)(H)PO2] and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylphoshonate [EMIM][(MeO)(H)PO2]. The chemical modification of cellulose occurred through a transesterification reaction between the methyl phosphonate function of ILs and the primary alcohol functions of cellulose. The resulting cellulose structure and the amount of grafted phosphorus were then investigated by X-ray diffraction, ICP-AES, and ¹³C and ³¹P NMR spectroscopy. Depending on the IL type and initial cotton / IL ratio in the solution, regenerated cellulose contained up to 4.5% of phosphorus. The rheological behavior of cotton cellulose/ILs solutions and the microscale fire performances of modified cellulose were studied in order to ultimately prepare flame retardant cellulosic materials. Significant improvement in the flame retardancy of regenerated cellulose was obtained with a reduction of THR values down to about 5-6 kJ/g and an increase of char up to about 35 wt%.

Project description:For equimolar mixtures of ionic liquids with imidazolium-based cations of very different electronic structure, we observe very pronounced surface enrichment effects by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For a mixture with the same anion, that is, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate+1,3-di(methoxy)imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8 C1 Im][PF6 ]+[(MeO)2 Im][PF6 ]), we find a strong enrichment of the octyl chain-containing [C8 C1 Im]+ cation and a corresponding depletion of the [(MeO)2 Im]+ cation in the topmost layer. For a mixture with different cations and anions, that is, [C8 C1 Im][Tf2 N]+[(MeO)2 Im][PF6 ], we find both surface enrichment of the [C8 C1 Im]+ cation and the [Tf2 N]- (bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide) anion, while [(MeO)2 Im]+ and [PF6 ]- are depleted from the surface. We propose that the observed behavior in these mixtures is due to a lowering of the surface tension by the enriched components. Interestingly, we observe pronounced differences in the chemical shifts of the imidazolium ring signals of the [(MeO)2 Im]+ cations as compared to the non-functionalized cations. Calculations of the electronic structure and the intramolecular partial charge distribution of the cations contribute to interpreting these shifts for the two different cations.
