Chemoselective hydrogenation of heteroarenes and arenes by Pd-Ru-PVP under mild conditions.

ABSTRACT: Monometallic (Pd, Ru or Rh) and bimetallic (Pd_0.5-Ru_0.5) alloy NPs catalysts were examined for the hydrogenation of quinoline. Pd-Ru alloy catalyst showed superior catalytic activity to the traditional Rh catalyst. The characterization of Pd_0.5-Ru_0.5 catalysts, HAADF-EDX mapping and XPS analysis suggested that the alloy state of PdRu catalysts remained unchanged in the recovered catalyst. Furthermore, the catalyst was highly selective for the hydrogenation of different arenes.

Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Aldehydes under Mild, Base-Free Conditions: Manganese Outperforms Rhenium.

Project description:Several hydride Mn(I) and Re(I) PNP pincer complexes were applied as catalysts for the homogeneous chemoselective hydrogenation of aldehydes. Among these, [Mn(PNP-iPr)(CO)2(H)] was found to be one of the most efficient base metal catalysts for this process and represents a rare example which permits the selective hydrogenation of aldehydes in the presence of ketones and other reducible functionalities, such as C=C double bonds, esters, or nitriles. The reaction proceeds at room temperature under base-free conditions with catalyst loadings between 0.1 and 0.05 mol% and a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar (reaching TONs of up to 2000). A mechanism which involves an outer-sphere hydride transfer and reversible PNP ligand deprotonation/protonation is proposed. Analogous isoelectronic and isostructural Re(I) complexes were only poorly active.

Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Arenes and Heteroarenes.

Project description:Transfer hydrogenation reactions are of great interest to reduce diverse molecules under mild reaction conditions. To date, this type of reaction has only been successfully applied to alkenes, alkynes and polarized unsaturated compounds such as ketones, imines, pyridines, etc. The reduction of benzene derivatives by transfer hydrogenation has never been described, which is likely due to the high energy barrier required to dearomatize these compounds. In this context, we have developed a catalytic transfer hydrogenation reaction for the reduction of benzene derivatives and heteroarenes to form complex 3-dimensional scaffolds bearing various functional groups at room temperature without needing compressed hydrogen gas.

Metal-free selective mono-halodecarboxylation of heteroarenes under mild conditions.

Project description:The halodecarboxylation of heteroarene carboxylic acids by treatment with N-bromosuccinimide or N-chlorosuccinimide was performed. This procedure provides a convenient route to synthetically useful mono-halogenated heteroarene intermediates such as halo-indoles, -aza-indoles, -indazoles and -aza-indazoles. The mild conditions employed and simple protocol provides an advantage over traditional halodecarboxylation procedures that require expensive and toxic metal catalysts, basic conditions, time-consuming intermediate isolation and elevated reaction temperatures.

Manganese-Catalyzed Hydrogenation of Ketones under Mild and Base-free Conditions.

Project description:In this paper, several Mn(I) complexes were applied as catalysts for the homogeneous hydrogenation of ketones. The most active precatalyst is the bench-stable alkyl bisphosphine Mn(I) complex fac-[Mn(dippe) (CO)3(CH2CH2CH3)]. The reaction proceeds at room temperature under base-free conditions with a catalyst loading of 3 mol % and a hydrogen pressure of 10 bar. A temperature-dependent selectivity for the reduction of α,β-unsaturated carbonyls was observed. At room temperature, the carbonyl group was selectively hydrogenated, while the C=C bond stayed intact. At 60 °C, fully saturated systems were obtained. A plausible mechanism based on DFT calculations which involves an inner-sphere hydride transfer is proposed.

Highly efficient ethylene production via electrocatalytic hydrogenation of acetylene under mild conditions.

Project description:Renewable energy-based electrocatalytic hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene (E-HAE) under mild conditions is an attractive substitution to the conventional energy-intensive industrial process, but is challenging due to its low Faradaic efficiency caused by competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we report a highly efficient and selective E-HAE process at room temperature and ambient pressure over the Cu catalyst. A high Faradaic efficiency of 83.2% for ethylene with a current density of 29 mA cm-2 is reached at -0.6 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. In-situ spectroscopic characterizations combined with first-principles calculations reveal that electron transfer from the Cu surface to adsorbed acetylene induces preferential adsorption and hydrogenation of the acetylene over hydrogen formation, thus enabling a highly selective E-HAE process through the electron-coupled proton transfer mechanism. This work presents a feasible route for high-efficiency ethylene production from E-HAE.

Project description:A mild and practical Pd/Xiang-Phos-catalyzed enantioselective intermolecular carboheterofunctionalization reaction of 2,3-dihydrofurans is developed, leading to various optically active fused furoindolines and tetrahydrofurobenzofurans. The key to this transformation is employing two newly modified N-Me-Xiang-Phos ligands ((S, R S)- N-Me-X4/X5) as chiral ligands under mild conditions. Moreover, this synthetic methodology can be efficiently applied to a variety of complex polysubstituted heterocycles with high chemo-, regio-, and enantio-selectivities via introducing diverse substituents on furan rings, which were hard to access by other routes.

Access to C(sp3) borylated and silylated cyclic molecules: hydrogenation of corresponding arenes and heteroarenes.

Project description:This paper presents a simple and cost-effective hydrogenation method for synthesizing a myriad of cycloalkanes and saturated heterocycles bearing boryl or silyl substituents. The catalyst used are heterogeneous, readily available, bench stable, and recyclable. Also demonstrated is the application of the method to compounds that possess both boryl and silyl groups. When combined with Ir-catalyzed sp2 C-H borylation, such hydrogenations offer a two-step complementary alternative to direct sp3 C-H borylations that can suffer selectivity and reactivity issues. Of practical value to the community, complete stereochemical analyses of reported borylated compounds that were never fully characterized are reported herein.

Conversion of Polyolefin Waste to Liquid Alkanes with Ru-Based Catalysts under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Chemical upcycling of waste polyolefins via hydrogenolysis offers unique opportunities for selective depolymerization compared to high temperature thermal deconstruction. Here, we demonstrate the hydrogenolysis of polyethylene into liquid alkanes under mild conditions using ruthenium nanoparticles supported on carbon (Ru/C). Reactivity studies on a model n-octadecane substrate showed that Ru/C catalysts are highly active and selective for the hydrogenolysis of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds at temperatures ranging from 200 to 250 °C. Under optimal conditions of 200 °C in 20 bar H2, polyethylene (average M w ∼ 4000 Da) was converted into liquid n-alkanes with yields of up to 45% by mass after 16 h using a 5 wt % Ru/C catalyst with the remaining products comprising light alkane gases (C1-C6). At 250 °C, nearly stoichiometric yields of CH4 were obtained from polyethylene over the catalyst. The hydrogenolysis of long chain, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and a postconsumer LDPE plastic bottle to produce C7-C45 alkanes was also achieved over Ru/C, demonstrating the feasibility of this reaction for the valorization of realistic postconsumer plastic waste. By identifying Ru-based catalysts as a class of active materials for the hydrogenolysis of polyethylene, this study elucidates promising avenues for the valorization of plastic waste under mild conditions.

Hydrogenation of benzoic acid derivatives over Pt/TiO2 under mild conditions.

Project description:Hydrogenation of benzoic acid (BA) to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CCA) has important industrial and academic significance, however, the electron deficient aromatic ring and catalyst poisoning by carboxyl groups make BA hydrogenation a challenging transformation. Herein, we report that Pt/TiO2 is very effective for BA hydrogenation with, to our knowledge, a record TOF of 4490 h-1 at 80 °C and 50 bar H2, one order higher than previously reported results. Pt/TiO2 catalysts with electron-deficient and electron-enriched Pt sites are obtained by modifying the electron transfer direction between Pt and TiO2. Electron-deficient Pt sites interact with BA more strongly than electron-rich Pt sites, helping the dissociated H of the carboxyl group to participate in BA hydrogenation, thus enhancing its activity. The wide substrate scope, including bi- and tri-benzoic acids, further demonstrates the high efficiency of Pt/TiO2 for hydrogenation of BA derivatives.
