Temperature-tuned ferromagnetism in hydrogenated multilayer graphene.

ABSTRACT: Improving the ferromagnetism properties of pure carbon-based materials is extremely important for their application in spintronics. Hydrogenation of graphene is an effective way to induce magnetic moment into graphene with the advantage of reversibility. However, little experimental work has been done to prove the effect of hydrogen on the magnetic properties of graphene so far, except for systems containing a large amount of oxygen or plasma-induced vacancy which complicated the magnetic origin. Here we report a facile electrochemical cathodic method to generate hydrogenated multilayer graphene or few-layer graphite using graphite powder as the raw material, and observed hydrogen-induced ferromagnetism in samples annealed at different temperatures. The observed results suggest that ferromagnetism of hydrogenated multilayer graphene can be tuned by high temperature treatment, which is attributed to a changeable relative amount of hydrogen atoms chemisorpted on two different sublattices during thermal treatment.

Robust ferromagnetism in hydrogenated graphene mediated by spin-polarized pseudospin.

Project description:The origin of the ferromagnetism in metal-free graphitic materials has been a decade-old puzzle. The possibility of long-range magnetic order in graphene has been recently questioned by the experimental findings that point defects in graphene, such as fluorine adatoms and vacancies, lead to defect-induced paramagnetism but no magnetic ordering down to 2 K. It remains controversial whether collective magnetic order in graphene can emerge from point defects at finite temperatures. This work provides a new framework for understanding the ferromagnetism in hydrogenated graphene, highlighting the key contribution of the spin-polarized pseudospin as a "mediator" of long-range magnetic interactions in graphene. Using first-principles calculations of hydrogenated graphene, we found that the unique 'zero-energy' position of H-induced quasilocalized states enables notable spin polarization of the graphene's sublattice pseudospin. The pseudospin-mediated magnetic interactions between the H-induced magnetic moments stabilize the two-dimensional ferromagnetic ordering with Curie temperatures of Tc = nH × 34,000 K for the atom percentage nH of H adatoms. These findings show that atomic-scale control of hydrogen adsorption on graphene can give rise to a robust magnetic order.

Embedding atomic cobalt into graphene lattices to activate room-temperature ferromagnetism.

Project description:Graphene is extremely promising for next-generation spintronics applications; however, realizing graphene-based room-temperature magnets remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate that robust room-temperature ferromagnetism with TC up to ∼400 K and saturation magnetization of 0.11 emu g-1 (300 K) can be achieved in graphene by embedding isolated Co atoms with the aid of coordinated N atoms. Extensive structural characterizations show that square-planar Co-N4 moieties were formed in the graphene lattices, where atomically dispersed Co atoms provide local magnetic moments. Detailed electronic structure calculations reveal that the hybridization between the d electrons of Co atoms and delocalized pz electrons of N/C atoms enhances the conduction-electron mediated long-range magnetic coupling. This work provides an effective means to induce room-temperature ferromagnetism in graphene and may open possibilities for developing graphene-based spintronics devices.

Heterostrain and temperature-tuned twist between graphene/h-BN bilayers.

Project description:Two-dimensional materials stacked atomically at small twist angles enable the modification of electronic states, motivating twistronics. Here, we demonstrate that heterostrain can rotate the graphene flake on monolayer h-BN within a few degrees (- 4° to 4°), and the twist angle stabilizes at specific values with applied constant strains, while the temperature effect is negligible in 100-900 K. The band gaps of bilayers can be modulated from ~ 0 to 37 meV at proper heterostrain and twist angles. Further analysis shows that the heterostrain modulates the interlayer energy landscape by regulating Moiré pattern evolution. The energy variation is correlated with the dynamic instability of different stacking modes of bilayers, and arises from the fluctuation of interlayer repulsive interaction associated with p-orbit electrons. Our results provide a mechanical strategy to manipulate twist angles of graphene/h-BN bilayers, and may facilitate the design of rotatable electronic nanodevices.

The roughening kinetics of hydrogenated graphene.

Project description:The roughness is a common property of all growing surfaces - however, the way the roughness of a growing surface changes with time and space is uniquely related to the underlying growth process, i.e. to how the atoms stick to the surface during the first stage of nucleation. This concept allows getting insights on the nucleation process of a growing surface by measuring two scaling exponents, ? and ?, known as roughness and growth exponents, respectively. In this work, we studied hydrogenation of graphene using the roughening kinetics. The coverage of graphene will depend on how the H ions stick on the surface, giving rise to a unique roughness evolution in time and space. We measured a roughness exponent of ~0.5 (derived from a Fourier index of ~3), and a growth exponent of ~0.3. The values of the growth and roughness exponents are close to those reported for clustered carbon, suggesting a roughening mechanism by clustering, in good agreement with the theory. We also compared our coverage data with a different model, used to describe the dynamics of graphene coverage, during chemical vapour deposition. Our data are in agreement with a nucleation-dominated growth, further confirming that hydrogenation is happening by clustering.

Hydrogenated-Graphene-Encapsulated Graphene: A Versatile Material for Device Applications.

Project description:Graphene and its heterostructures exhibit interesting electronic properties and are explored for quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) and magnetism-based device applications. In present work, we propose a heterostructure of graphene encapsulated by hydrogenated-graphene, which could be a promising candidate for a variety of device applications. We have carried out DFT calculations on this system to check its feasibility to be a versatile material. We found that electronic states of multilayer pristine graphene, especially the Dirac cone, an important feature to host QSHE, can be preserved by sandwiching it by fully hydrogenated graphene. The interference of electronic states of hydrogenated graphene was insignificant with those of graphene. States of graphene were also found to be stable upon application of an electric field up to ±2.5 V/nm. For device applications, multilayer graphene or its heterostructures are required to be deposited on a substrate, which interacts with the system opening up a gap at the Dirac cone making it less suitable for QSHE applications, and hydrogenated graphene can prevent it. Magnetization in these hydrogenated-graphene-sandwiched graphene systems may be induced by creating vacancies or distortions in hydrogenated graphene, which was found to have a minimal effect on graphene's electronic states, thus providing an additional degree of manipulation. We also performed a set of calculations to explore its applicability for detecting some molecules. Our results on trilayer graphene encapsulated by hydrogenated graphene indicate that all these observations can be generalized for systems with a larger number of graphene layers, indicating that multilayer graphene sandwiched between two hydrogenated graphene is a versatile material that can be used in QSHE and sensor devices.

Quantum and electrochemical interplays in hydrogenated graphene.

Project description:The design of electrochemically gated graphene field-effect transistors for detecting charged species in real time, greatly depends on our ability to understand and maintain a low level of electrochemical current. Here, we exploit the interplay between the electrical in-plane transport and the electrochemical activity of graphene. We found that the addition of one H-sp3 defect per hundred thousand carbon atoms reduces the electron transfer rate of the graphene basal plane by more than five times while preserving its excellent carrier mobility. Remarkably, the quantum capacitance provides insight into the changes of the electronic structure of graphene upon hydrogenation, which predicts well the suppression of the electrochemical activity based on the non-adiabatic theory of electron transfer. Thus, our work unravels the interplay between the quantum transport and electrochemical kinetics of graphene and suggests hydrogenated graphene as a potent material for sensing applications with performances going beyond previously reported graphene transistor-based sensors.

Optically tuned terahertz modulator based on annealed multilayer MoS2.

Project description:Controlling the propagation properties of terahertz waves is very important in terahertz technologies applied in high-speed communication. Therefore a new-type optically tuned terahertz modulator based on multilayer-MoS2 and silicon is experimentally demonstrated. The terahertz transmission could be significantly modulated by changing the power of the pumping laser. With an annealing treatment as a p-doping method, MoS2 on silicon demonstrates a triple enhancement of terahertz modulation depth compared with the bare silicon. This MoS2-based device even exhibited much higher modulation efficiency than the graphene-based device. We also analyzed the mechanism of the modulation enhancement originated from annealed MoS2, and found that it is different from that of graphene-based device. The unique optical modulating properties of the device exhibit tremendous promise for applications in terahertz switch.

Possible gapless helical edge states in hydrogenated graphene.

Project description:Electronic band structures in hydrogenated graphene are theoretically investigated by means of first-principle calculations and an effective tight-binding model. It is shown that regularly designed hydrogenation to graphene gives rise to a large band gap about 1 eV. Remarkably, by changing the spatial pattern of the hydrogenation, topologically distinct states can be realized, where the topological nontriviality is detected by C2 parity indices in bulk and confirmed by the existence of gapless edge/interface states as protected by the mirror and sublattice symmetries. The analysis of the wave functions reveals that the helical edge states in hydrogenated graphene with the appropriate design carry pseudospin currents that are reminiscent of the quantum spin Hall effect. Our work shows the potential of hydrogenated graphene in pseudospin-based device applications.

Doping with Graphitic Nitrogen Triggers Ferromagnetism in Graphene.

Project description:Nitrogen doping opens possibilities for tailoring the electronic properties and band gap of graphene toward its applications, e.g., in spintronics and optoelectronics. One major obstacle is development of magnetically active N-doped graphene with spin-polarized conductive behavior. However, the effect of nitrogen on the magnetic properties of graphene has so far only been addressed theoretically, and triggering of magnetism through N-doping has not yet been proved experimentally, except for systems containing a high amount of oxygen and thus decreased conductivity. Here, we report the first example of ferromagnetic graphene achieved by controlled doping with graphitic, pyridinic, and chemisorbed nitrogen. The magnetic properties were found to depend strongly on both the nitrogen concentration and type of structural N-motifs generated in the host lattice. Graphenes doped below 5 at. % of nitrogen were nonmagnetic; however, once doped at 5.1 at. % of nitrogen, N-doped graphene exhibited transition to a ferromagnetic state at ∼69 K and displayed a saturation magnetization reaching 1.09 emu/g. Theoretical calculations were used to elucidate the effects of individual chemical forms of nitrogen on magnetic properties. Results showed that magnetic effects were triggered by graphitic nitrogen, whereas pyridinic and chemisorbed nitrogen contributed much less to the overall ferromagnetic ground state. Calculations further proved the existence of exchange coupling among the paramagnetic centers mediated by the conduction electrons.
