Heterostrain and temperature-tuned twist between graphene/h-BN bilayers.

ABSTRACT: Two-dimensional materials stacked atomically at small twist angles enable the modification of electronic states, motivating twistronics. Here, we demonstrate that heterostrain can rotate the graphene flake on monolayer h-BN within a few degrees (- 4° to 4°), and the twist angle stabilizes at specific values with applied constant strains, while the temperature effect is negligible in 100-900 K. The band gaps of bilayers can be modulated from ~ 0 to 37 meV at proper heterostrain and twist angles. Further analysis shows that the heterostrain modulates the interlayer energy landscape by regulating Moiré pattern evolution. The energy variation is correlated with the dynamic instability of different stacking modes of bilayers, and arises from the fluctuation of interlayer repulsive interaction associated with p-orbit electrons. Our results provide a mechanical strategy to manipulate twist angles of graphene/h-BN bilayers, and may facilitate the design of rotatable electronic nanodevices.

Temperature-tuned ferromagnetism in hydrogenated multilayer graphene.

Project description:Improving the ferromagnetism properties of pure carbon-based materials is extremely important for their application in spintronics. Hydrogenation of graphene is an effective way to induce magnetic moment into graphene with the advantage of reversibility. However, little experimental work has been done to prove the effect of hydrogen on the magnetic properties of graphene so far, except for systems containing a large amount of oxygen or plasma-induced vacancy which complicated the magnetic origin. Here we report a facile electrochemical cathodic method to generate hydrogenated multilayer graphene or few-layer graphite using graphite powder as the raw material, and observed hydrogen-induced ferromagnetism in samples annealed at different temperatures. The observed results suggest that ferromagnetism of hydrogenated multilayer graphene can be tuned by high temperature treatment, which is attributed to a changeable relative amount of hydrogen atoms chemisorpted on two different sublattices during thermal treatment.

Blue emission at atomically sharp 1D heterojunctions between graphene and h-BN.

Project description:Atomically sharp heterojunctions in lateral two-dimensional heterostructures can provide the narrowest one-dimensional functionalities driven by unusual interfacial electronic states. For instance, the highly controlled growth of patchworks of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) would be a potential platform to explore unknown electronic, thermal, spin or optoelectronic property. However, to date, the possible emergence of physical properties and functionalities monitored by the interfaces between metallic graphene and insulating h-BN remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate a blue emitting atomic-resolved heterojunction between graphene and h-BN. Such emission is tentatively attributed to localized energy states formed at the disordered boundaries of h-BN and graphene. The weak blue emission at the heterojunctions in simple in-plane heterostructures of h-BN and graphene can be enhanced by increasing the density of the interface in graphene quantum dots array embedded in the h-BN monolayer. This work suggests that the narrowest, atomically resolved heterojunctions of in-plane two-dimensional heterostructures provides a future playground for optoelectronics.

Hall sensors batch-fabricated on all-CVD h-BN/graphene/h-BN heterostructures.

Project description:The two-dimensional (2D) material graphene is highly promising for Hall sensors due to its potential of having high charge carrier mobility and low carrier concentration at room temperature. Here, we report the scalable batch-fabrication of magnetic Hall sensors on graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using commercially available large area CVD grown materials. The all-CVD grown h-BN/graphene/h-BN van der Waals heterostructures were prepared by layer transfer technique and Hall sensors were batch-fabricated with 1D edge metal contacts. The current-related Hall sensitivities up to 97 V/AT are measured at room temperature. The Hall sensors showed robust performance over the wafer scale with stable characteristics over six months in ambient environment. This work opens avenues for further development of growth and fabrication technologies of all-CVD 2D material heterostructures and allows further improvements in Hall sensor performance for practical applications.

Twist-diameter coupling drives DNA twist changes with salt and temperature.

Project description:DNA deformations upon environmental changes, e.g., salt and temperature, play crucial roles in many biological processes and material applications. Here, our magnetic tweezers experiments observed that the increase in NaCl, KCl, or RbCl concentration leads to substantial DNA overwinding. Our simulations and theoretical calculation quantitatively explain the salt-induced twist change through the mechanism: More salt enhances the screening of interstrand electrostatic repulsion and hence reduces DNA diameter, which is transduced to twist increase through twist-diameter coupling. We determined that the coupling constant is 4.5 ± 0.8 kBT/(degrees∙nm) for one base pair. The coupling comes from the restraint of the contour length of DNA backbone. On the basis of this coupling constant and diameter-dependent DNA conformational entropy, we predict the temperature dependence of DNA twist Δωbp/ΔT ≈ -0.01 degree/°C, which agrees with our and previous experimental results. Our analysis suggests that twist-diameter coupling is a common driving force for salt- and temperature-induced DNA twist changes.

Reversible conversion between graphene nanosheets and graphene nanoscrolls at room temperature.

Project description:In this paper, the reversible conversion between pristine graphene nanosheets and pristine graphene nanoscrolls at room temperature was reported. The graphene nanosheets were rolled up into the graphene nanoscrolls by silver nitrate in ethanol solution, and the fabricated graphene nanoscrolls were unfolded back to the graphene nanosheets in ethanol solution by adding ammonium hydroxide. The dynamic conversion state of the process was confirmed by the morphology of the intermediate samples captured using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Also, AFM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy displayed that the graphene transformed from its nanoscrolls remained the structure and morphology of the started graphene. The reason for the formation of the nanoscrolls was assigned to the silver cyanide particles generated on the edge of the graphene. The freshly formed silver cyanide caused the unbalanced energy of the graphene surface by changing the pi electron distribution and triggered off the graphene to roll up. The unfolding of the graphene nanoscrolls back to the graphene nanosheets was attributed to the removal of the silver cyanide by the ammonia via forming the complex. This reversible conversion might be a novel and facile approach to make graphene nanoscrolls and to store the graphene. Also, it may bring new sight to the conversion research between two-dimension and one-dimension materials.

Effect of Twist Angle on Interfacial Thermal Transport in Two-Dimensional Bilayers.

Project description:Advances in two-dimensional (2D) devices require innovative approaches for manipulating transport properties. Analogous to the electrical and optical responses, it has been predicted that thermal transport across 2D materials can have a similar strong twist-angle dependence. Here, we report experimental evidence deviating from this understanding. In contrast to the large tunability in electrical transport, we measured an unexpected weak twist-angle dependence of interfacial thermal transport in MoS2 bilayers, which is consistent with theoretical calculations. More notably, we confirmed the existence of distinct regimes with weak and strong twist-angle dependencies for thermal transport, where, for example, a much stronger change with twist angles is expected for graphene bilayers. With atomic simulations, the distinct twist-angle effects on different 2D materials are explained by the suppression of long-wavelength phonons via the moiré superlattice. These findings elucidate the unique feature of 2D thermal transport and enable a new design space for engineering thermal devices.

Drift current-induced tunable near-field energy transfer between twist magnetic Weyl semimetals and graphene.

Project description:Both the nonreciprocal surface modes in Weyl semimetal (WSM) with a large anomalous Hall effect and the nonreciprocal photon occupation number on a graphene surface induced by the drift current provide a promising way to manipulate the nonreciprocal near-field energy transfer. Interestingly, the interactions between nonreciprocities are highly important for research in (thermal) photonics but remain challenging. In this study, we theoretically investigated the near-field radiative heat flux transfer between a graphene heterostructure supported by a magnetic WSM and a twist-Weyl semimetal (T-WSM). The nonreciprocal surface mode could be changed by the separation space between two Weyl nodes and the twist angle. Notably, we found that in the absence of a temperature difference between two parallel plates, nonequilibrium fluctuations caused by drift currents led to the transfer of near-field radiative heat flux. Furthermore, these nonreciprocal surface modes interacted with the nonreciprocal photon occupation number in graphene to achieve flexible manipulation of the near-field heat flux size and direction. Additionally, graphene adjustable flux in the case of a temperature difference between the two plates was also discussed. Our scheme can provide a reference for near-field heat flux regulation in nonequilibrium systems.

Thermal Conductance of the 2D MoS<sub>2</sub>/h-BN and graphene/h-BN Interfaces.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their corresponding van der Waals heterostructures have drawn tremendous interest due to their extraordinary electrical and optoelectronic properties. Insulating 2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with an atomically smooth surface has been widely used as a passivation layer to improve carrier transport for other 2D materials, especially for Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDCs). However, heat flow at the interface between TMDCs and h-BN, which will play an important role in thermal management of various electronic and optoelectronic devices, is not yet understood. In this paper, for the first time, the interface thermal conductance (G) at the MoS2/h-BN interface is measured by Raman spectroscopy, and the room-temperature value is (17.0 ± 0.4) MW · m-2K-1. For comparison, G between graphene and h-BN is also measured, with a value of (52.2 ± 2.1) MW · m-2K-1. Non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) calculations, from which the phonon transmission spectrum can be obtained, show that the lower G at the MoS2/h-BN interface is due to the weaker cross-plane transmission of phonon modes compared to graphene/h-BN. This study demonstrates that the MoS2/h-BN interface limits cross-plane heat dissipation, and thereby could impact the design and applications of 2D devices while considering critical thermal management.

Vibrational Properties of h-BN and h-BN-Graphene Heterostructures Probed by Inelastic Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy.

Project description:Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy is a powerful technique for investigating lattice dynamics of nanoscale systems including graphene and small molecules, but establishing a stable tunnel junction is considered as a major hurdle in expanding the scope of tunneling experiments. Hexagonal boron nitride is a pivotal component in two-dimensional Van der Waals heterostructures as a high-quality insulating material due to its large energy gap and chemical-mechanical stability. Here we present planar graphene/h-BN-heterostructure tunneling devices utilizing thin h-BN as a tunneling insulator. With much improved h-BN-tunneling-junction stability, we are able to probe all possible phonon modes of h-BN and graphite/graphene at Γ and K high symmetry points by inelastic tunneling spectroscopy. Additionally, we observe that low-frequency out-of-plane vibrations of h-BN and graphene lattices are significantly modified at heterostructure interfaces. Equipped with an external back gate, we can also detect high-order coupling phenomena between phonons and plasmons, demonstrating that h-BN-based tunneling device is a wonderful playground for investigating electron-phonon couplings in low-dimensional systems.

Postsynthesis of h-BN/Graphene Heterostructures Inside a STEM.

Project description:Combinations of 2D materials with different physical properties can form heterostructures with modified electrical, mechanical, magnetic, and optical properties. The direct observation of a lateral heterostructure synthesis is reported by epitaxial in-plane graphene growth from the step-edge of hexagonal BN (h-BN) within a scanning transmission electron microscope chamber. Residual hydrocarbon in the chamber is the carbon source. The growth interface between h-BN and graphene is atomically identified as largely N-C bonds. This postgrowth method can form graphene nanoribbons connecting two h-BN domains with different twisting angles, as well as isolated carbon islands with arbitrary shapes embedded in the h-BN layer. The electronic properties of the vertically stacked h-BN/graphene heterostructures are investigated by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Low-loss EELS analysis of the dielectric response suggests a robust coupling effect between the graphene and h-BN layers.
