Designable core-shell graphite particles for thermally conductive and electrically insulating polymer composites.

ABSTRACT: Electrically insulating graphite particles were prepared by coating graphite with electrically insulating materials via a two-step mechanical mixing process. Graphite particles were treated with a binder in the 1^st mixing process and coated with an electrically insulating particle in the 2^nd mixing process under high shear forces within a short processing time (below 1 min). Micron-sized graphite particles were successfully coated with various inorganic particles of appropriate particle diameter. Talc and boron nitride exhibited good affinities with graphite and formed effective coating layers to render reliable electrical insulation. Graphite coated with talc and boron nitride exhibited a high volume resistivity, greater than 10⁹ Ω cm. The insulating property was retained even after compounding and moulding the coated graphite particles with a polymer. The two-step coating process under high shear forces is a promising method for production of coated graphite particles.

Thermally Conductive and Electrically Insulating Polymer-Based Composites Heat Sinks Fabricated by Fusion Deposition Modeling.

Project description:This study explores the potential of novel boron nitride (BN) microplatelet composites with combined thermal conduction and electrical insulation properties. These composites are manufactured through Fusion Deposition Modeling (FDM), and their application for thermal management in electronic devices is demonstrated. The primary focus of this work is, therefore, the investigation of the thermoplastic composite properties to show the 3D printing of lightweight polymeric heat sinks with remarkable thermal performance. By comparing various microfillers, including BN and MgO particles, their effects on material properties and alignment within the polymer matrix during filament fabrication and FDM processing are analyzed. The characterization includes the evaluation of morphology, thermal conductivity, and mechanical and electrical properties. Particularly, a composite with 32 wt% of BN microplatelets shows an in-plane thermal conductivity of 1.97 W m-1 K-1, offering electrical insulation and excellent printability. To assess practical applications, lightweight pin fin heat sinks using these composites are designed and 3D printed. Their thermal performance is evaluated via thermography under different heating conditions. The findings are very promising for an efficient and cost-effective fabrication of thermal devices, which can be obtained through extrusion-based Additive Manufacturing (AM), such as FDM, and exploited as enhanced thermal management solutions in electronic devices.

Thermally Switchable Electrically Conductive Thermoset rGO/PK Self-Healing Composites.

Project description:Among smart materials, self-healing is one of the most studied properties. A self-healing polymer can repair the cracks that occurred in the structure of the material. Polyketones, which are high-performance thermoplastic polymers, are a suitable material for a self-healing mechanism: a furanic pendant moiety can be introduced into the backbone and used as a diene for a temperature reversible Diels-Alder reaction with bismaleimide. The Diels-Alder adduct is formed at around 50 °C and broken at about 120 °C, giving an intrinsic, stimuli-responsive self-healing material triggered by temperature variations. Also, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is added to the polymer matrix (1.6-7 wt%), giving a reversible OFF-ON electrically conductive polymer network. Remarkably, the electrical conductivity is activated when reaching temperatures higher than 100 °C, thus suggesting applications as electronic switches based on self-healing soft devices.

Electrically and Thermally Conductive Carbon Fibre Fabric Reinforced Polymer Composites Based on Nanocarbons and an In-situ Polymerizable Cyclic Oligoester.

Project description:There is growing interest in carbon fibre fabric reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites based on a thermoplastic matrix, which is easy to rapidly produce, repair or recycle. To expand the applications of thermoplastic CFRP composites, we propose a process for fabricating conductive CFRP composites with improved electrical and thermal conductivities using an in-situ polymerizable and thermoplastic cyclic butylene terephthalate oligomer matrix, which can induce good impregnation of carbon fibres and a high dispersion of nanocarbon fillers. Under optimal processing conditions, the surface resistivity below the order of 10+10 Ω/sq, which can enable electrostatic powder painting application for automotive outer panels, can be induced with a low nanofiller content of 1 wt%. Furthermore, CFRP composites containing 20 wt% graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were found to exhibit an excellent thermal conductivity of 13.7 W/m·K. Incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes into CFRP composites is more advantageous for improving electrical conductivity, whereas incorporating GNPs is more beneficial for enhancing thermal conductivity. It is possible to fabricate the developed thermoplastic CFRP composites within 2 min. The proposed composites have sufficient potential for use in automotive outer panels, engine blocks and other mechanical components that require conductive characteristics.

Nano liquid metal for the preparation of a thermally conductive and electrically insulating material with high stability.

Project description:Dielectric materials typically demonstrate poor thermal conductivity, which limits their application in emerging technologies in integrated circuits, computer chips, light-emitting diode lamps, and other electronic packaging areas. Using liquid metal microdroplets as inclusions to develop thermal interface materials has been shown to effectively improve thermal pathways, but this type of material may become electroconductive with the application of a concentrated compressive stress. In this study, an isotropic nano-liquid metal thermally-conductive and electrically-insulating material (nLM-THEM) is developed by combining a modified polymer and well-dispersed nanoparticles, achieving an ∼50× increase in thermal conductivity over the base polymer. In addition, the thermal conductivity of nLM-THEMs exhibits no significant change with varying humidity and a stable anti-corrosion effect even in direct contact with aluminum. More importantly, nLM-THEMs demonstrate a stable electrical insulating property upon compressive stress, while conventional micro-LM-THEMs exude liquid metal. This exceptional combination of thermal and electrical insulation properties is enabled by the interconnection of uniform and spherical liquid metal nanoparticles to create more thermally-conductive pathways, and surfactant modified nanoparticles ensure excellent electric insulation. Moreover, this material can achieve passive heat exchange through rapid heat dissipation, which demonstrates its great application potential in the electronic packaging area.

Highly Thermally Conductive Polymer/Graphene Composites with Rapid Room-Temperature Self-Healing Capacity.

Project description:Composites that can rapidly self-healing their structure and function at room temperature have broad application prospects. However, in view of the complexity of composite structure and composition, its self-heal is facing challenges. In this article, supramolecular effect is proposed to repair the multistage structure, mechanical and thermal properties of composite materials. A stiff and tough supramolecular frameworks of 2-[[(butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl ester (PBA)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were established using a chain extender with double amide bonds in a side chain to extend prepolymers through copolymerization. Then, by introducing the copolymer into a folded graphene film (FGf), a highly thermally conductive composite of PBA-PDMS/FGf with self-healing capacity was fabricated. The ratio of crosslinking and hydrogen bonding was optimized to ensure that PBA-PDMS could completely self-heal at room temperature in 10 min. Additionally, PBA-PDMS/FGf exhibits a high tensile strength of 2.23 ± 0.15 MPa at break and high thermal conductivity of 13 ± 0.2 W m-1 K-1; of which the self-healing efficiencies were 100% and 98.65% at room temperature for tensile strength and thermal conductivity, respectively. The excellent self-healing performance comes from the efficient supramolecular interaction between polymer molecules, as well as polymer molecule and graphene. This kind of thermal conductive self-healing composite has important application prospects in the heat dissipation field of next generation electronic devices in the future.

Flexible, Highly Thermally Conductive and Electrically Insulating Phase Change Materials for Advanced Thermal Management of 5G Base Stations and Thermoelectric Generators.

Project description:Thermal management has become a crucial problem for high-power-density equipment and devices. Phase change materials (PCMs) have great prospects in thermal management applications because of their large capacity of heat storage and isothermal behavior during phase transition. However, low intrinsic thermal conductivity, ease of leakage, and lack of flexibility severely limit their applications. Solving one of these problems often comes at the expense of other performance of the PCMs. In this work, we report core-sheath structured phase change nanocomposites (PCNs) with an aligned and interconnected boron nitride nanosheet network by combining coaxial electrospinning, electrostatic spraying, and hot-pressing. The advanced PCN films exhibit an ultrahigh thermal conductivity of 28.3 W m-1 K-1 at a low BNNS loading (i.e., 32 wt%), which thereby endows the PCNs with high enthalpy (> 101 J g-1), outstanding ductility (> 40%) and improved fire retardancy. Therefore, our core-sheath strategies successfully balance the trade-off between thermal conductivity, flexibility, and phase change enthalpy of PCMs. Further, the PCNs provide powerful cooling solutions on 5G base station chips and thermoelectric generators, displaying promising thermal management applications on high-power-density equipment and thermoelectric conversion devices.

Turning Seashell Waste into Electrically Conductive Particles.

Project description:Biomaterials such as seashells are intriguing due to their remarkable properties, including their hierarchical structure from the nanometer to the micro- or even macroscopic scale. Transferring this nanostructure to generate nanostructured polymers can improve their electrical conductivity. Here, we present the synthesis of polypyrrole using waste seashell powder as a template to prepare a polypyrrole/CaCO3 composite material. Various synthesis parameters were optimized to produce a composite material with an electrical conductivity of 2.1 × 10-4 ± 3.2 × 10-5 S/cm. This work presents the transformation of waste seashells into sustainable, electronically conductive materials and their application as an antistatic agent in polymers. The requirements of an antistatic material were met for a safety shoe sole.

Development of Organo-Dispersible Graphene Oxide via Pseudo-Surface Modification for Thermally Conductive Green Polymer Composites.

Project description:Graphene has attracted lots of researchers attention because of its remarkable conductivity in both electrically and thermally. However, it has poor dispersibility in organic solvents which limited its applications. Polymers with aromatic end group which act as an intercalator were prepared by ring-opening polymerization with ε-caprolactone by utilizing 1-naphthalene methanol (1-NM) as an initiator. These intercalators will exist between graphene oxide (GO) sheets to prevent aggregation via interactions. The attachment of 1-NM on polymer chains was supported by ultraviolet-visible spectra, size exclusion chromatography profiles, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Exfoliated structured functionalized GO (fGO)/polycaprolactone (PCL) (synthesized fGO) nanocomposites that dispersed well in acetone, chloroform, N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, and toluene were successfully synthesized. This agreed well with the enlarged interlayer spacing in the optimized fGO as compared to that of GO from density functional theory simulations using the DMol3 module that implemented in the Materials Studio 6.0. Furthermore, its potential to be applied as green electronics in electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries was presented, by trailering the thermal conductivity enhancement from the incorporation of fGO/PCL with commercialized biodegradable polymers, PCL, and poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid].

Structural Effect of Polyimide Precursors on Highly Thermally Conductive Graphite Films.

Project description:In this study, polyimide (PI) with high carbonization yield was used as a precursor to prepare graphite films with high thermal conductivity. The crystallinity, grain size, and thermal conductivity of the graphite films were characterized and found to vary according to the chemical structure of the PI precursor. Aromatic PIs containing ortho-substituted hydroxyl groups in the PI main chain (DHB-BPDA) were synthesized by the polycondensation reaction of 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine (DHB) and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA). The DHB-BPDA is converted to a polybenzoxazole (PBO) structure through thermolysis reaction during carbonization. The PBO containing a benzene ring and a heterocycle group can provide a strong main chain and high thermal stability due to its resonant structure. The graphite film prepared from DHB-BPDA exhibited a large grain size (63.727 nm) and a high thermal conductivity of 916 W/(mK).

Fractal dendrite-based electrically conductive composites for laser-scribed flexible circuits.

Project description:Fractal metallic dendrites have been drawing more attentions recently, yet they have rarely been explored in electronic printing or packaging applications because of the great challenges in large-scale synthesis and limited understanding in such applications. Here we demonstrate a controllable synthesis of fractal Ag micro-dendrites at the hundred-gram scale. When used as the fillers for isotropically electrically conductive composites (ECCs), the unique three-dimensional fractal geometrical configuration and low-temperature sintering characteristic render the Ag micro dendrites with an ultra-low electrical percolation threshold of 0.97?vol% (8?wt%). The ultra-low percolation threshold and self-limited fusing ability may address some critical challenges in current interconnect technology for microelectronics. For example, only half of the laser-scribe energy is needed to pattern fine circuit lines printed using the present ECCs, showing great potential for wiring ultrathin circuits for high performance flexible electronics.
