Synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from CO₂ and methanol over a hydrophobic Ce/SBA-15 catalyst.

ABSTRACT: A series of Ce/SBA-15 catalysts with different degrees of hydrophobicities were prepared via a post-grafting method and used for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO₂ and methanol. The Ce/SBA-15-6 catalyst exhibited the highest DMC yield of 0.2%, which was close to the equilibrium value under the reaction conditions of 130 °C, 12 h and 12 MPa. The catalysts were characterized via XRD, BET, FT-IR, solid-state ²⁹Si MAS NMR, CA, TEM, XPS and NH₃/CO₂-TPD; the results indicated that the hydrophobicity of the catalysts facilitated the creation of oxygen vacancies, which could act as Lewis acids to activate methanol. Higher amounts of moderate acid sites led to higher yields of DMC. In addition, the hydrophobicity of the catalysts could also reduce the adsorbed water on their surface and increase the DMC yield while shortening the reaction time.

Surface Characterization of Mesoporous CoOx/SBA-15 Catalyst upon 1,2-Dichloropropane Oxidation.

Project description:The active combustion catalyst that is based on 30 wt % cobalt oxide on mesoporous SBA-15 has been tested in 1,2-dichloropropane oxidation and is characterized by means of FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and ammonia-TPD (temperature-programmed desorption). In this work, we report the spectroscopic evidence for the role of surface acidity in chloroalkane conversion. Both Lewis acidity and weakly acidic silanol groups from SBA support are involved in the adsorption and initial conversion steps. Moreover, total oxidation reaction results in the formation of new Bronsted acidic sites, which are likely associated with the generation of HCl at high temperature and its adsorption at the catalyst surface. Highly dispersed Co oxide on the mesoporous support and Co-chloride or oxychloride particles, together with the presence of several families of acidic sites originated from the conditioning effect of reaction products may explain the good activity of this catalyst in the oxidation of Chlorinated Volatile Organic Compounds.

A platinum promoted Ag/SBA-15 catalyst effective in selective oxidation of methanol - design and surface characterization.

Project description:The aim of this study was better understanding of surface properties of bimetallic (silver-platinum) catalysts and to verify if a very small addition of platinum (ca. 0.05 wt%) to silver (ca. 2.0 wt%) loaded on ordered mesoporous silica, SBA-15, would improve the catalytic properties of bimetallic Ag-Pt materials in selective oxidation of methanol to methyl formate. Ag-Pt catalysts were prepared by one-step and step-by-step procedures and the final Ag/Pt molar ratio in the respective samples was equal to 86 and 63. The catalysts were characterized after calcination and different activation treatments (in Ar and O2). X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and XP spectroscopy confirmed the lack of Ag-Pt alloy crystallites in the samples and also evidenced a higher resistance of silver oxide species to reduction upon activation in Ar flow in the presence of platinum promoter interacting with silver species. Methanol oxidation over the samples activated in Ar flow and in oxidizing flow (O2 + Ar) helped identify the role of each component in the bimetallic Ag-Pt catalyst in terms of activity and selectivity in the oxidation of methanol to methyl formate. A highly active bimetallic Pt/Ag/SBA-15 catalyst, selective to methyl formate and stable in methanol oxidation was constructed.

Synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and CO2 under low pressure.

Project description:A mild and highly efficient approach has been developed for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and CO2 under low initial pressure. The key to a successful transformation is the use of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), CH2Br2 and ionic liquid. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the yield of DMC was obtained up to 81% under 0.25 MPa. The direct synthesis of DMC can be carried out at balloon pressure using CH2Br2 and DBU. In this case, after the reaction, DBU was proved to be recyclable after having been treated with KOH in ethanol. In addition, a plausible mechanism for this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results.

Guanidinylated SBA-15/Fe3O4 mesoporous nanocomposite as an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of pyranopyrazole derivatives.

Project description:In this study, a novel mesoporous nanocomposite was fabricated in several steps. In this regard, SBA-15 was prepared by the hydrothermal method, next it was magnetized by in-situ preparation of Fe3O4 MNPs. After that, the as-prepared SBA-15/Fe3O4 functionalized with 3-minopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) via post-synthesis approach. Then, the guanidinylated SBA-15/Fe3O4 was obtained by nucleophilic addition of APTES@SBA-15/Fe3O4 to cyanimide. The prepared nanocomposite exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the synthesis of dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives which can be related to its physicochemical features such as strong basic sites (presented in guanidine group), Lewis acid site (presented in Fe3O4), high porous structure, and high surface area. The characterization of the prepared mesoporous nanocomposite was well accomplished by different techniques such as FT-IR, EDX, FESEM, TEM, VSM, TGA, XRD and BET. Furthermore, the magnetic catalyst was reused at least six consequent runs without considerable reduction in its catalytic activity.

One-Pot Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate over a Binary Catalyst of an Ionic Liquid and an Alkali Carbonate under Low Pressure.

Project description:A mild and highly efficient approach has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from epoxide, carbon dioxide, and methanol under low initial pressure. The key to the successful transformation is the use of a bicomponent catalytic system composed of a hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid and an alkali carbonate. This bicomponent catalytic system demonstrated excellent reusability in four runs. Under the optimal reaction conditions, a 64% yield of DMC from propylene oxide and an 81% yield of DMC from ethylene oxide were obtained.

MnO x dispersed on attapulgite derived Al-SBA-15: a promising catalyst for volatile organic compound combustion.

Project description:To improve the catalytic activity when utilizing metal oxides for the combustion of VOCs, Mn/Al-SBA-15 catalysts have been successfully synthesized through an emerging wetness impregnation technique involving Mn(NO3)2 on Al-SBA-15, which has been directly prepared from attapulgite by a hydrothermal method. Compared to Mn/SBA-15, which is prepared with TEOS as its silicon source, all the as-prepared Mn/Al-SBA-15 catalysts demonstrated enhanced catalytic performance in the oxidation of toluene. From this research, the 8% Mn/Al-SBA-15 catalyst presented the best catalytic performance, due to the high efficiency resulting from the high chemical valence of Mn4+. When the concentration of toluene was 2000 ppm, and the space velocity was 60 000 mL (g h)-1, 8% Mn/Al-SBA-15 could effectively reduce the T 50 and T 90 values of toluene to 201 and 278 °C, respectively; while the 8% Mn/SBA-15 catalyst could reduce the T 50 and T 90 values of toluene to 223 and 298 °C, respectively. A systematic investigation has been conducted to reveal the synergistic effects of Al doping and manganese loading on the enhanced catalytic performance. The experiments showed impressive results, demonstrating that Al doping can not only increase the surface acidity of SBA-15, but it can also be beneficial for achieving a uniform dispersion of MnO x on the surface and in the pores of Al-SBA-15, resulting in the enhancement of the catalytic performance.

Room-Temperature CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Air-Stable hcp-PdMo Intermetallic Catalyst.

Project description:CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is one of the most promising routes to CO2 utilization. However, difficulty in CO2 activation at low temperature, catalyst stability, catalyst preparation, and product separation are obstacles to the realization of a practical hydrogenation process under mild conditions. Here, we report a PdMo intermetallic catalyst for low-temperature CO2 hydrogenation. This catalyst can be synthesized by the facile ammonolysis of an oxide precursor and exhibits excellent stability in air and the reaction atmosphere and significantly enhances the catalytic activity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and CO compared with a Pd catalyst. A turnover frequency of 0.15 h-1 was achieved for methanol synthesis at 0.9 MPa and 25 °C, which is comparable to or higher than that of the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts under higher-pressure conditions (4-5 MPa).

H3PMo12O40 Immobilized on Amine Functionalized SBA-15 as a Catalyst for Aldose Epimerization.

Project description:In this work various amount of phosphomolybdic acid (PMo) were immobilized on amine functionalized SBA-15 and used as heterogeneous catalysts in the epimerization of glucose in aqueous solution. 13.3PMo/NH2-SBA-15 exhibited the best catalytic performance with a glucose conversion of 34.8% and mannose selectivity of 85.6% within two hours at 120 °C. The activation energy of 80.1 ± 0.1 kJ·mol-1 was lower than that of 96 kJ·mol-1 over the homogeneous H3PMo12O40 catalyst. The catalytic activities of 13.3PMo/NH2-SBA-15 for the transformation of some other aldoses including mannose, arabinose and xylose were also investigated.

CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Cd4/TiO2 Catalyst: Insight into Multifunctional Interface.

Project description:Supported metal catalysts have shown to be efficient for CO2 conversion due to their multifunctionality and high stability. Herein, we have combined density functional theory calculations with microkinetic modeling to investigate the catalytic reaction mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH over a recently reported catalyst of Cd4/TiO2. Calculations reveal that the metal-oxide interface is the active center for CO2 hydrogenation and methanol formation via the formate pathway dominates over the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) pathway. Microkinetic modeling demonstrated that formate species on the surface of Cd4/TiO2 is the relevant intermediate for the production of CH3OH, and CH2O# formation is the rate-determining step. These findings demonstrate the crucial role of the Cd-TiO2 interface for controlling the CO2 reduction reactivity and CH3OH selectivity.

Effective Dehydration of Fructose Over Stable Ti-Doped SBA-15 Catalysts.

Project description:High-effective synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from carbohydrates is an interesting reaction among biomass valorization. The as-synthesized Ti-SBA-15 catalysts with mesoporous structures showed high catalytic efficiency for the conversion of fructose to HMF. Ti-SBA-15 catalysts with different Si/Ti ratios were characterized by characterization techniques such as elemental analysis, XRD, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, NH3-TPD, and pyridine-FTIR. The acidity of Ti-SBA-15 catalysts could be tuned by altering addition amount of titanium. The effects of reaction conditions, including reaction time, temperature, and amount of catalyst, on the conversions of fructose and the yields of HMF were also investigated. It is found that Ti-SBA-15 catalysts whose Si/Ti ratio is 120 gave the best yields of HMF, which demonstrated 100% conversion of fructose with a maximum HMF yield of 82% at 140°C after 1 h. In addition, its catalytic performance was retained after 5 recycles in fructose conversion reaction, proving its good catalytic stability.
