Radiographically screened periodontitis is associated with deteriorated oral-health quality of life: A cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT: Periodontitis is greatly related to worse perceived oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), yet this association has never been explored using radiographically screened periodontal bone loss. Here we have radiographically screened patients for periodontitis via a validated method and assessed its association with measures of OHRQoL. From a total of 10,267 participants (6,112 females and 4,155 males), self-reported general health questionnaire, body mass index, self-reported oral health behaviours, panoramic x-rays and the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) were gathered. Radiographically screened periodontitis was measured through a radiographic-based periodontal bone loss (R-PBL) approach. We compared the respective variables according to the R-PBL status and explored using multiple logistic regression adjusted for the significant variables. Overall, patients with periodontitis shown significantly different sociodemographic, health measures and oral hygiene characteristics. All domains of the OHIP-14 were significantly worsened in the periodontitis group, and further confirmed through adjusted logistic regression (p<0.001). Active smoking, number of missing teeth, sex and age were the most impactful variables in this relationship. Our results demonstrate the existence of a link between radiographically screened periodontitis and OHRQoL, mostly upheld by active smoking, number of missing teeth, sex and age.

Project description:BackgroundOrthodontic braces have become symbols of wealth and fashion accessories in some parts of the world. However, there is a scarcity of information about the effects of fashion braces on various aspects of quality of life. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effects of fashion braces on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL).MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out with data collection from a Google form questionnaire distributed in Saudi Arabia via various forms of social media over a period of 4 months. OHRQoL was assessed using the validated Arabic version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The fashion braces group included respondents who had braces installed for fashion purposes only. Therapeutic braces group included subjects who were wearing braces to treat any malocclusion problems. Control group included subjects who did not have any kind of braces. People who had previously completed orthodontic treatments were excluded from the study. The negative impacts were divided into seven domains and a total OHIP score was calculated. Statistical analyses and data illustration were performed with SPSS v25 (IBM, NY).ResultsA total of 1141 people voluntarily participated in the study. More than 60% of the participants were in the control group while 33.7% had conventional braces for therapeutic reasons and 3.4% had fashion braces. Sociodemographic distributions varied among the groups, with the majority of the fashion braces group having education below the university level and family incomes less than average. There were significant group differences in OHIP domains. Physical pain was the most frequently reported complaint by all subjects and was the highest in the therapeutic braces group. People with therapeutic braces reported significantly higher functional limitation and physical disability than the controls. Fashion braces group reported significantly lower psychological discomfort and disability, social disability and handicap compared to control groups.ConclusionsThe illustrated effects of fashion braces on OHRQoL suggest the need to study the role of social media and educate the public on the use of braces to minimize the negative effects experienced by individuals.

Project description:BackgroundThe quantity-quality trade-off theory indicates that an increase in siblings might decrease a child's well-being, but little is known about the impacts of sibling number on children's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). This study aims to investigate the effects of presence of siblings on children's OHRQoL, and to further test whether there is an interaction effect between siblings' presence and locations on children's OHRQoL.MethodsData were obtained from an oral-health survey of 12-year-old children in Beijing, China, which was a part of the 4th National Oral Health Survey in the Mainland of China (2015-2016). This study included 2158 children data for analysis. OHRQoL was assessed by the child's Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP). OIDP prevalence served as an indicator of OHRQoL. Children with and without siblings were recorded as non-single and single children, respectively. Dental variables, including active caries, gingival bleeding, and calculus, were reported. A logistic regression model was applied to investigate the association of siblings' presence and OIDP prevalence. A synergy index was used to assess the possible interaction effect between siblings' presence and location on OIDP prevalence.ResultsSixty percent of Chinese children reported suffering OIDP in the previous six months. OIDP prevalence for non-single and single children were 68.3% and 56.9%, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of OIDP for non-single children was 1.31 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.63), and the adjusted OR of OIDP for non-single and rural children was 2.03 (95% CI: 1.47, 2.81). The synergy index between siblings' presence and location on OIDP was 2.18 (85% CI: 1.30, 3.67), which indicates that an excessive risk increase for OIDP was observed among non-single and rural children.ConclusionsChildren with siblings are more likely to report OIDP and have lower OHRQoL, especially those from rural areas. These findings indicate that oral-health interventions should be given priority for non-single and rural children.
