Gradient Annealing as a New Strategy to Fabricate Gradient Nanoparticle Array on Microwires.

ABSTRACT: Creating gradients of nanostructure on the surface has found broad applications such as enhanced optical spectroscopy, optical storage of information, and broadband solar energy harvesting. Here, a facile strategy is presented for fabricating gradient nanoparticle arrays with tunable size. It takes a ZnO:Ga microwire as the starting material, and the Ga³⁺ doping gradient along the microwire is induced by the high voltage applied. Such a doping gradient facilitates the formation of a temperature gradient in a Joule heating process. And this temperature gradient produced by this technique can be as high as 800 °C/mm, which could be later used for gradient annealing of thin metal films. After annealing, the thin metal films turn to gradient nanoparticle arrays. The obtained gradient nanoparticle arrays are confirmed effective in multi-wavelength surface enhanced Raman scattering enhancement.

Design a New Strategy Based on Nanoparticle-Enhanced Chemiluminescence Sensor Array for Biothiols Discrimination.

Project description:Array-based sensor is an interesting approach that suggests an alternative to expensive analytical methods. In this work, we introduce a novel, simple, and sensitive nanoparticle-based chemiluminescence (CL) sensor array for discrimination of biothiols (e.g., cysteine, glutathione and glutathione disulfide). The proposed CL sensor array is based on the CL efficiencies of four types of enhanced nanoparticle-based CL systems. The intensity of CL was altered to varying degrees upon interaction with biothiols, producing unique CL response patterns. These distinct CL response patterns were collected as "fingerprints" and were then identified through chemometric methods, including linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The developed array was able to successfully differentiate between cysteine, glutathione and glutathione disulfide in a wide concentration range. Moreover, it was applied to distinguish among the above analytes in human plasma.

Process strategy to fabricate a hierarchical porosity gradient in diatomite-based foams by 3D printing.

Project description:Motivated by the hierarchical micro and nanoscale features in terms of porosity of diatomite, the production of ceramic-graded porous foams with tailored porosity, obtained by using it as raw material, has been proposed. The main challenge during the foam-production process has been the preservation of diatomite nanometric porosity and the addition of other levels of hierarchical porosity. The coupled use of two techniques of direct foaming (chemical and mechanical), combined with the use of 3D printing inverse replica method, assured the achievement of porosity of, respectively, microscopic and macroscopic dimensions. Optical and scanning electron microscopies have been performed for an in-depth characterization of the final microstructure. XRD analysis has been carried out to check the influence of sacrificial templates on the matrix mineralogical composition. The porosity of the diatomite-based foams has been investigated by means of nitrogen-adsorption analysis and mercury-intrusion porosimetry. The experimental tests confirmed the presence of different porous architectures ranging over several orders of magnitudes, giving rise to complex systems, characterized by hierarchical levels of porosity. The presence of porosity of graded dimensions affects the final mechanical performances of the macroporous diatomite-based foams, while their mineralogical composition does not result to be affected by the addition of templates.

A New Strategy to Fabricate Nanoporous Gold and Its Application in Photodetector.

Project description:Nanoporous gold (NPG) plays an important role in high-performance electronic devices, including sensors, electrocatalysis, and energy storage systems. However, the traditional fabricating methods of NPG, dealloying technique or electrochemical reduction technique, usually require complex experimental procedures and sophisticated equipment. In this work, we reported a unique and simple method to prepare the NPG through a low-temperature solution process. More importantly, the structure of the NPG-based electrode can be further controlled by using the post-treatment process, such as thermal treatment and plasma treatment. Additionally, we also demonstrate the application of the resulting NPG electrodes in flexible photodetectors, which performs a higher sensitivity than common planar photodetectors. We believe that our work opens a possibility for the nanoporous metal in future electronics that is flexible, large scale, with facile fabrication, and low cost.

Protein Dielectrophoresis with Gradient Array of Conductive Electrodes Sheds New Light on Empirical Theory.

Project description:Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is a versatile tool for the precise microscale manipulation of a broad range of substances. To unleash the full potential of DEP for the manipulation of complex molecular-sized particulates such as proteins requires the development of appropriate theoretical models and their comprehensive experimental verification. Here, we construct an original DEP platform and test the Hölzel-Pethig empirical model for protein DEP. Three different proteins are studied: lysozyme, BSA, and lactoferrin. Their molecular Clausius-Mossotti function is obtained by detecting their trapping event via the measurement of the fluorescence intensity to identify the minimum electric field gradient required to overcome dispersive forces. We observe a significant discrepancy with published theoretical data and, after a very careful analysis to rule out experimental errors, conclude that more sophisticated theoretical models are required for the response of molecular entities in DEP fields. The developed experimental platform, which includes arrays of sawtooth metal electrode pairs with varying gaps and produces variations of the electric field gradient, provides a versatile tool that can broaden the utilization of DEP for molecular entities.

A Flexible Method to Fabricate Exsolution-Based Nanoparticle-Decorated Materials in Seconds.

Project description:Decorating metallic nanoparticles on the surface of oxide support is a promising approach to tailor the catalytic activity of perovskite. Here, for the first time using thermal shock to rapidly fabricate nanoparticle-decorated materials (NDMs) is proposed. Low-cost and size-tailorable carbon paper is used as the heating source during the thermal shock. It is reported that by thermal shock technique, only ≈13 s including heating and treating time is needed to fabricate the exsolution-based NDMs (the fastest method to date). Benefitted by the sufficiently provided driving force and the short treating time, as compared to the product prepared by the conventionally furnace-based method, higher particle density and smaller particle size of the exsolved catalysts are acquired for the thermal shock fabricated NDM, giving rise to a fascinating improvement (12-fold) of the electrochemical performance. This work develops a new technique to rapidly fabricate NDMs in an economic and high-throughput manner, profoundly improving the flexibility of the application of exsolution-based materials in electrochemical devices.

Nanoparticle manipulation by thermal gradient.

Project description:A method was proposed to manipulate nanoparticles through a thermal gradient. The motion of a fullerene molecule enclosed inside a (10, 10) carbon nanotube with a thermal gradient was studied by molecular dynamics simulations. We created a one-dimensional potential valley by imposing a symmetrical thermal gradient inside the nanotube. When the temperature gradient was large enough, the fullerene sank into the valley and became trapped. The escaping velocities of the fullerene were evaluated based on the relationship between thermal gradient and thermophoretic force. We then introduced a new way to manipulate the position of nanoparticles by translating the position of thermostats with desirable thermal gradients. Compared to nanomanipulation using a scanning tunneling microscope or an atomic force microscope, our method for nanomanipulation has a great advantage by not requiring a direct contact between the probe and the object.

Vapour confinement as a strategy to fabricate metal and bimetallic nanostructures.

Project description:Metal nanostructures have attracted much attention in biomedical, plasmonic, hydrogen storage, and high-energy battery applications. However, the synthesis of various nanostructures of highly reactive elements (e.g. Mg) is still a difficult task and no single-approach has been reported for synthesizing such nanostructures. In this work, we produced magnesium nanoparticles (NPs), nanowires (NWs) and nanoneedles (NNs) in a single-approach, based on thermal evaporation without any carrier gas. Importantly, we employed rapid heating and cooling via a rapid thermal processing (RTP) furnace to control the nucleation and growth of nanostructures. The testing of Zn and Mg-Zn nanostructures was done to validate our approach and design for other metals and bimetallics. Interestingly, Cu and Ag nanoparticles were produced from metal salts (metal acetates and nitrates) with a reasonable control. The tuning of various nanostructures was possible by interplaying (i) with the curvature/outer diameter of the quartz bottle used for evaporation and (ii) by varying the position of the substrates. More specifically, the curvature of the quartz bottle increased the vapour collisions and effectively reduced the thermal energy of the vapour. Altogether, this favoured the control and confinement of vapour onto substrates and achieved supersaturation. Simultaneously, it led to the formation of various nanostructures without any carrier gas. The presented experimental set up is a versatile, simple, single-step and cost-effective solution for producing high-quality nanostructures.

Gradient lithography of engineered proteins to fabricate 2D and 3D cell culture microenvironments.

Project description:Spatial patterning of proteins is a valuable technique for many biological applications and is the prevailing tool for defining microenvironments for cells in culture, a required procedure in developmental biology and tissue engineering research. However, it is still challenging to achieve protein patterns that closely mimic native microenvironments, such as gradient protein distributions with desirable mechanical properties. By combining projection dynamic mask lithography and protein engineering with non-canonical photosensitive amino acids, we demonstrate a simple, scalable strategy to fabricate any user-defined 2D or 3D stable gradient pattern with complex geometries from an artificial extracellular matrix (aECM) protein. We show that the elastic modulus and chemical nature of the gradient profile are biocompatible and allow useful applications in cell biological research.

Preparation of Ni nanoparticles by liquid-phase reduction to fabricate metal nanoparticle-polyimide composite films.

Project description:Nickel-nanoparticle-containing polyimide composite films were prepared by liquid-phase reduction of Ni2+ ions with potassium borohydride (KBH4). The nanoparticles were amorphous with diameters of approximately 10-20 nm, depending on the KBH4 concentration and reduction temperature. At high KBH4 concentrations, the nanoparticles appeared to contain various nickel boride species. The number of nanoparticles and Ni content both increased upon repeated adsorption/reduction of Ni2+ ions, where the particle growth was inhibited by the rigid polymer chain and the formation of smaller particles was favored.

Embedded 3D bioprinting - An emerging strategy to fabricate biomimetic & large vascularized tissue constructs.

Project description:Three-dimensional bioprinting is an advanced tissue fabrication technique that allows printing complex structures with precise positioning of multiple cell types layer-by-layer. Compared to other bioprinting methods, extrusion bioprinting has several advantages to print large-sized tissue constructs and complex organ models due to large build volume. Extrusion bioprinting using sacrificial, support and embedded strategies have been successfully employed to facilitate printing of complex and hollow structures. Embedded bioprinting is a gel-in-gel approach developed to overcome the gravitational and overhanging limits of bioprinting to print large-sized constructs with a micron-scale resolution. In embedded bioprinting, deposition of bioinks into the microgel or granular support bath will be facilitated by the sol-gel transition of the support bath through needle movement inside the granular medium. This review outlines various embedded bioprinting strategies and the polymers used in the embedded systems with advantages, limitations, and efficacy in the fabrication of complex vascularized tissues or organ models with micron-scale resolution. Further, the essential requirements of support bath systems like viscoelasticity, stability, transparency and easy extraction to print human scale organs are discussed. Additionally, the organs or complex geometries like vascular constructs, heart, bone, octopus and jellyfish models printed using support bath assisted printing methods with their anatomical features are elaborated. Finally, the challenges in clinical translation and the future scope of these embedded bioprinting models to replace the native organs are envisaged.
