Improving the Stability and Efficiency of Perovskite Solar Cells by a Bidentate Anilinium Salt.

ABSTRACT: We report improvement in the perovskite solar cell efficiency and stability after passivation with an organic molecule decorated with two anilinium cations. We compare this salt with its neutral analog and found that the change in the electron density distribution upon protonation and the presence of the halide anion are key to explaining the better passivation ability of the salt. In addition, we show that the counteranion has a significant impact on the performance of the device.

A novel natural scaffold layer improving efficiency, stability and reproducibility of Perovskite solar cells.

Project description:In this study, our hypothesis was to demonstrate the usability of a natural clay structure as scaffold layer in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Sepiolite, which is a natural and environmentally friendly clay structure, has a very high active surface area and can easily be dispersed in solvents. In addition we predicted that crystallization could easily occur on their surfaces due to their surface chemistry. In the study, we firstly used a natural clay as scaffold layer in PSCs. It is observed that, efficiency, reproducibility and stability of PSCs have been significantly improved. Improvements in efficiency have been observed to be between 30 and 50% depending on the type of perovskite solvent used. In addition, the surface chemistry of the sepiolite resulted in better crystallization as well as stability. Due to its high-water adsorption capability, sepiolite makes the perovskite crystal more stable by trapping the residual water molecules as well as penetrated water molecules from environment. Consequently, we demonstrated that, a natural, low-cost and environmentally friendly clay may be an alternative material which may contribute to the commercialization of PSCs.

Neutral Ligand Triggered Low-Dimensional Reconstruction for Improving the Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer a potentially large-scale method for producing low-cost renewable energy. However, stability challenges currently limit their practical application. Consequently, alternative methods for increasing the PSC stability are urgently needed. Compared with three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, low-dimensional (LD) perovskites have been shown to have higher stability. In this study, a LD/3D hybrid perovskite strategy is used that involves post-treating the Cs0.05(FA0.98MA0.02)0.95Pb(I0.98Br0.02)3 perovskite with a neutral allyl 1H-imidazole-1-carboxylate (AImC) ligand. We show that this neutral organic spacer molecule has two key roles. AImC acts as a solvent and triggers localized reconstruction to produce a LD capping layer in one postprocessing step. AImC prolongs the carrier lifetime and reduces trap-assisted recombination. As a result, the PSCs containing AImC achieve a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.42% compared to 20.27% for the control device and show significantly decreased hysteresis. AImC also greatly increased the stability of the films and devices to air, moisture, and heat. The results of this study imply that neutral amine liquids that have the correct solvating and ligating properties have good potential to improve the PCE and stability of the PSCs.

Surface Passivation of Perovskite Solar Cells Toward Improved Efficiency and Stability.

Project description:The advancement of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) technology toward commercialized promotion needs high efficiency and optimum stability. By introducing a small molecular material such as tetratetracontane (TTC, CH3(CH2)42CH3) at the fullerene (C60)/perovskite interface of planar p-i-n PVSCs, we significantly reduced the interfacial traps, thereby suppressing electron recombination and facilitating electron extraction. Consequently, an improved efficiency of 20.05% was achieved with a high fill factor of 79.4%, which is one of the best performances for small molecular-modified PVSCs. Moreover, the hydrophobic TTC successfully protects the perovskite film from water damage. As a result, we realized a better long-term stability that maintains 87% of the initial efficiency after continuous exposure for 200 h in air.

Cesium-containing triple cation perovskite solar cells: improved stability, reproducibility and high efficiency.

Project description:Today's best perovskite solar cells use a mixture of formamidinium and methylammonium as the monovalent cations. With the addition of inorganic cesium, the resulting triple cation perovskite compositions are thermally more stable, contain less phase impurities and are less sensitive to processing conditions. This enables more reproducible device performances to reach a stabilized power output of 21.1% and ∼18% after 250 hours under operational conditions. These properties are key for the industrialization of perovskite photovoltaics.

Enhanced Efficiency and Stability of Tin Halide Perovskite Solar Cells Through MOF Integration.

Project description:Tin halide perovskites are promising candidates for lead-free perovskite solar cells due to their ideal bandgap and high charge-carrier mobility. However, poor crystal quality and rapid degradation in ambient conditions severely limit their stability and practical applications. This study demonstrates that incorporating UiO-66, a zirconium-based MOF, significantly enhances the performance and stability of tin halide perovskite solar cells (TPSCs). The unique porous structure and abundant carboxylate groups of UiO-66 improve the crystallinity and film quality of FASnI₃, reduce defect density, and prolong charge carrier lifetimes. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of UiO-66-integrated TPSCs increases from 11.43% to 12.64%, and the devices maintain over 90% of their initial PCE after 100 days in a nitrogen glovebox. These findings highlight the potential of UiO-66 in addressing the efficiency and stability challenges of tin halide perovskites.

Photon shifting and trapping in perovskite solar cells for improved efficiency and stability.

Project description:Advanced light management techniques can enhance the sunlight absorption of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). When located at the front, they may act as a UV barrier, which is paramount for protecting the perovskite layer against UV-enabled degradation. Although it was recently shown that photonic structures such as Escher-like patterns could approach the theoretical Lambertian-limit of light trapping, it remains challenging to also implement UV protection properties for these diffractive structures while maintaining broadband absorption gains. Here, we propose a checkerboard (CB) tile pattern with designated UV photon conversion capability. Through a combined optical and electrical modeling approach, this photonic structure can increase photocurrent and power conversion efficiency in ultrathin PSCs by 25.9% and 28.2%, respectively. We further introduce a luminescent down-shifting encapsulant that converts the UV irradiation into Visible photons matching the solar cell absorption spectrum. To this end, experimentally obtained absorption and emission profiles of state-of-the-art down-shifting materials (i.e., lanthanide-based organic-inorganic hybrids) are used to predict potential gains from harnessing the UV energy. We demonstrate that at least 94% of the impinging UV radiation can be effectively converted into the Visible spectral range. Photonic protection from high-energy photons contributes to the market deployment of perovskite solar cell technology, and may become crucial for Space applications under AM0 illumination. By combining light trapping with luminescent downshifting layers, this work unravels a potential photonic solution to overcome UV degradation in PSCs while circumventing optical losses in ultrathin cells, thus improving both performance and stability.

Improving the Stability of Halide Perovskite Solar Cells Using Nanoparticles of Tungsten Disulfide.

Project description:Halide perovskites-based solar cells are drawing significant attention due to their high efficiency, versatility, and affordable processing. Hence, halide perovskite solar cells have great potential to be commercialized. However, the halide perovskites (HPs) are not stable in an ambient environment. Thus, the instability of the perovskite is an essential issue that needs to be addressed to allow its rapid commercialization. In this work, WS2 nanoparticles (NPs) are successfully implemented on methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) based halide perovskite solar cells. The main role of the WS2 NPs in the halide perovskite solar cells is as stabilizing agent. Here the WS2 NPs act as heat dissipater and charge transfer channels, thus allowing an effective charge separation. The electron extraction by the WS2 NPs from the adjacent MAPbI3 is efficient and results in a higher current density. In addition, the structural analysis of the MAPbI3 films indicates that the WS2 NPs act as nucleation sites, thus promoting the formation of larger grains of MAPbI3. Remarkably, the absorption and shelf life of the MAPbI3 layers have increased by 1.7 and 4.5-fold, respectively. Our results demonstrate a significant improvement in stability and solar cell characteristics. This paves the way for the long-term stabilization of HPs solar cells by the implementation of WS2 NPs.

Bifunctional Cellulose Interlayer Enabled Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells with Simultaneously Enhanced Efficiency and Stability.

Project description:Interfacial engineering is a vital strategy to enable high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To develop efficient, low-cost, and green biomass interfacial materials, here, a bifunctional cellulose derivative is presented, 6-O-[4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)butyl]-2,3-di-O-methyl cellulose (C-Cz), with numerous methoxy groups on the backbone and redox-active carbazole units as side chains. The bifunctional C-Cz shows excellent energy level alignment, good thermal stability and strong interactions with the perovskite surface, all of which are critical for not only carrier transportation but also potential defects passivation. Consequently, with C-Cz as the interfacial modifier, the PSCs achieve a remarkably enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.02%, along with significantly enhanced long-term stability. These results underscore the advantages of bifunctional cellulose materials as interfacial layers with effective charge transport properties and strong passivation capability for efficient and stable PSCs.

High-Mobility p-Type Organic Semiconducting Interlayer Enhancing Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:A high-mobility p-type organic semiconductor based on benzodithiophene and diketopyrrolopyrrole with linear alkylthio substituents (BDTS-2DPP) is used as a dual function interfacial layer to modify the interface of perovskite/2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N'-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene in planar perovskite solar cells. The BDTS-2DPP layer can remarkably passivate the surface defects of perovskite through the formation of Lewis adduct between the under-coordinated Pb atoms in perovskite and S atoms in BDTS-2DPP, and also shows efficient hole extraction and transfer properties. The devices with BDTS-2DPP interlayer show a peak power conversion efficiency of 18.2%, which is higher than that of reference devices without the BDTS-2DPP interlayer (16.9%). Moreover, the hydrophobic BDTS-2DPP interlayer effectively protects the perovskite against moisture, leading to enhanced device stability.
