Muscle Fat Content Is Strongly Associated With Hyperuricemia: A Cross-Sectional Study in Chinese Adults.

ABSTRACT: Studies have indicated that the skeletal muscle mass and strength was related to serum uric acid (UA), but there is a lack of research on the association of skeletal muscle fat content with UA. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to investigate the correlation of skeletal muscle fat index (SMFI) and hyperuricemia (HUA) in Chinese adults. 500 subjects (306 men and 194 women) were included in the study. The participants were divided into four groups according to SMFI quartiles. Pearson's correlations between SMFI and metabolic variables were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between the quartiles of SMFI and risk of hyperuricemia. UA showed a positive association with SMFI after adjusted for BMI, age and gender. A significant association between the SMFI and risk of HUA was found, the OR for HUA was 2.79 (95% CI 1.18-6.59, p<0.05) in Q2, 2.41(95% CI 1.00-5.81, p<0.05) in Q3, and 2.63 (95% CI 1.03-6.72, p<0.05) in Q4, after adjusted for BMI. In conclusion, the SMFI was significantly associated with the level of serum UA, and the higher SMFI may indicate a higher risk of HUA, independent of BMI.

Project description:BackgroundExisting evidence shows that there is an independent correlation between nephrolithiasis and gout, and hyperuricemia is the most important risk factor for gout. However, hyperuricemia was often used as an accompanying symptom of gout to explore its association with nephrolithiasis, there were few studies to explore whether hyperuricemia itself or serum uric acid (SUA) is related to the risk of nephrolithiasis. Evidence on the relationship between hyperuricemia and nephrolithiasis is still insufficient.MethodsA total of 22,303 participants aged 30 to 79 years who participated in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study in Yunnan Province from May 2018 to September 2019 were included in the study. All participants received standardized face-to-face interviews, medical examinations, and biochemical examinations. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between hyperuricemia and nephrolithiasis, and a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was used to explore the dose-response relationship between SUA and the risk of nephrolithiasis.Results14.5% of all participants were diagnosed with hyperuricemia, and 12.1% were diagnosed with nephrolithiasis. After adjusting for all potential confounders, the OR (95%CI) for nephrolithiasis in participants with hyperuricemia compared with participants without hyperuricemia was 1.464 (1.312,1.633), p < 0.001. Restricted cubic spline regression analysis showed that the risk of nephrolithiasis increased with the increase of SUA, and when the level of SUA is higher than 356 μmol/L in males and higher than 265 μmol/L in females, there is a dose-response relationship between the increase of SUA and the risk of nephrolithiasis in both males and females (p for nonlinearity = 0.1668, p for nonlinearity = 0.0667).ConclusionAsymptomatic hyperuricemia is associated with an increased risk of developing nephrolithiasis. Before reaching the diagnostic criteria for hyperuricemia, the risk of nephrolithiasis rises with the increase in SUA. This suggests that controlling SUA levels may be significant for the prevention of nephrolithiasis.

Project description:BackgroundElevating blood iron levels may increase the risk of hyperuricemia. However, the association between dietary iron intake and hyperuricemia remains unclear. This study examines the association between dietary iron and hyperuricemia.MethodsThe data for this cross-sectional study came from the 2011-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included adults aged 20 and above in the United States. Detailed information on their demographics, dietary iron intake, serum uric acid, and other variables were gathered. This study employs a multifactorial logistic regression method to assess the relationship between dietary iron intake and hyperuricemia. Additionally, it utilizes Restricted Cubic Spline analysis to determine whether there is a non-linear relationship between dietary iron and hyperuricemia. Furthermore, sub-group analyses are conducted to further validate the robustness of this correlation.ResultsThis study included 11,441 patients, with a prevalence of hyperuricemia at 14.96%. Regardless of whether confounding factors were adjusted for, there was a positive correlation between dietary iron intake and hyperuricemia. In Model III, after adjusting for age, gender, race, educational background, body mass index, hypertension, carbohydrate intake, dietary fiber intake, total saturated fatty acid intake, vitamin K intake, vitamin C intake, marital status, poverty income ratio, smoking status, drinking status, work activity, diabetes, sodium intake, energy intake, protein intake, zinc intake, copper intake, selenium intake and total sugars intake, we found that compared to the lowest quintile of dietary iron intake (Q1, ≤ 8.03 mg/day), the odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia in the second (Q2, 8.04-11.07 mg/day), third (Q3, 11.08-14.27 mg/day), fourth (Q4, 14.28-19.33 mg/day), and fifth quintiles (Q5, ≥ 19.34 mg/day) were 1.05 (95% confidence interval: 0.79-1.40), 1.30 (95% confidence interval: 0.99-1.73), 1.39 (95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.89), and 1.36 (95% confidence interval: 0.95-1.97), respectively. The study results indicate that a higher dietary iron intake is significantly positively associated with the likelihood of hyperuricemia.ConclusionIn the adult population of the United States, there is a positive correlation between dietary iron intake and hyperuricemia, with higher dietary iron intake associated with an increased likelihood of hyperuricemia.
