From the Free Ligand to the Transition Metal Complex: FeEDTA^- Formation Seen at Ligand K-Edges.

ABSTRACT: Chelating agents are an integral part of transition metal complex chemistry with broad biological and industrial relevance. The hexadentate chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has the capability to bind to metal ions at its two nitrogen and four of its carboxylate oxygen sites. We use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the 1s absorption edge of the aforementioned elements in EDTA and the iron(III)-EDTA complex to investigate the impact of the metal-ligand bond formation on the electronic structure of EDTA. Frontier orbital distortions, occupation changes, and energy shifts through metal-ligand bond formation are probed through distinct spectroscopic signatures.

Project description:The formation of carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bonds via an umpolung substitution reaction has been achieved at -78 °C without the need for catalysts, ligands, or additives. The scope is limited to aryl Grignard reagents with N-chloroamines. The findings in this manuscript serve as a reference point for all C-N bond formation involving N-chloroamines and organometallic reagents. Knowing the yields of uncatalyzed reactions will be useful when determining the success of future catalytic methods.

Transition Metal Free sp3-sp3 carbon-carbon coupling between Benzylboronic Esters and Alkyl Bromides.

Project description:A transition metal free coupling reaction of benzylboronic esters and alkyl halides has been developed. Both alkyl bromides and alkyl iodides were found to be competent substrates with the nucleophilic boronate intermediate generated from the combination of benzylboronic ester and an alkyllithium. Good chemoselectivity was observed in substrates with a second electrophile. Both secondary and tertiary benzylboronic esters were effective nucleophiles in the reaction with primary alkyl halides. Mechanistic observations are consistent with a radical mechanism.

A transition-metal-free & diazo-free styrene cyclopropanation.

Project description:An operationally simple and broadly applicable novel cyclopropanation of styrenes using gem-diiodomethyl carbonyl reagents has been developed. Visible-light triggered the photoinduced generation of iodomethyl carbonyl radicals, able to cyclopropanate a wide array of styrenes with excellent chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance. To highlight the utility of our photocyclopropanation, we demonstrated the late-stage functionalization of biomolecule derivatives.

Transition-Metal-Free Cleavage of CO.

Project description:Tertiary silane 1H , 2-[(diphenylsilyl)methyl]-6-methylpyridine, reacts with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) to form the intramolecular pyridine-stabilized silylium 1+ -HBCF. The corresponding 2-[(diphenylsilyl)methyl]pyridine, lacking the methyl-group on the pyridine ring, forms classic N(py)→B adduct 2H -BCF featuring an intact silane Si-H fragment. Complex 1+ -HBCF promotes cleavage of the C≡O triple bond in carbon monoxide with double C-Csp2 bond formation, leading to complex 3 featuring a B-(diarylmethyl)-B-aryl-boryloxysilane fragment. Reaction with pinacol generates bis(pentafluorophenyl)methane 4 as isolable product, proving the transition-metal-free deoxygenation of carbon monoxide by this main-group system. Experimental data and DFT calculations support the existence of an equilibrium between the silylium-hydroborate ion pair and the silane-borane mixture that is responsible for the observed reactivity.

Binding Small Molecules to a cis-Dicarbonyl 99TcI-PNP Complex via Metal-Ligand Cooperativity.

Project description:Metal-ligand cooperativity is a powerful tool for the activation of various bonds but has rarely, if ever, been studied with the radioactive transition metal 99Tc. In this work, we explore this bond activation pathway with the dearomatized PNP complex cis-[99TcI(PyrPNPtBu*)(CO)2] (4), which was synthesized by deprotonation of trans-[99TcI(PyrPNPtBu)(CO)2Cl] with KOtBu. Analogous to its rhenium congener, the dearomatized compound reacts with CO2 to form the carboxy complex cis-[99TcI(PyrPNPtBu-COO)(CO)2] and with H2 to form the mono-hydride complex cis-[99TcI(PyrPNPtBu)(CO)2H] (7). Substrates with weakly acidic protons are deprotonated by the Brønsted basic pincer backbone of 4, yielding a variety of intriguing complexes. Reactions with terminal alkynes enable the isolation of acetylide complexes. The deprotonation of an imidazolium salt results in the in situ formation and coordination of a carbene ligand. Furthermore, a study with heterocyclic substrates allowed for the isolation of pyrrolide and pyrazolide complexes, which is uncommon for Tc. The spectroscopic analyses and their solid-state structures are reported.

Transition-metal-free alkynylation of aryl chlorides.

Project description:Two sets of conditions have been developed for a base-mediated, transition-metal-free alkynylation of aryl chlorides that proceeds via benzyne intermediates. The first set of conditions involves the use of TMPLi base in a pentane/THF mixture at 25 °C. The second set involves use of a metal alkoxide base in dioxane at elevated temperature. Reasonable functional group tolerance has been observed. Fluoro, trifluoromethyl, silyl, cyano, and alcohol functionalities are compatible with the reaction conditions.

Transition-Metal-Free Difunctionalization of Sulfur Nucleophiles.

Project description:Efficient protocols for accessing iodo-substituted diaryl and aryl(vinyl) sulfides have been developed using iodonium salts as reactive electrophilic arylation and vinylation reagents. The reactions take place under transition-metal-free conditions, employing odorless and convenient sulfur reagents. A wide variety of functional groups are tolerated in the S-diarylation, enabling the regioselective late-stage application of several heterocycles and drug molecules under mild reaction conditions. A novel S-difunctionalization pathway was discovered using vinyliodonium salts, which proceeds under additive-free reaction conditions and grants excellent stereoselectivity in the synthesis of aryl(vinyl) sulfides. A one-pot strategy combining transition-metal-free diarylation and subsequent reduction provided facile access to electron-rich thioanilines and a direct synthesis of a potential drug candidate derivative. The retained iodo group allows a wide array of further synthetic transformations. Mechanistic insights were elucidated by isolating the key intermediate, and the relevant energy profile was substantiated by DFT calculations.

This method enables highly controllable regio-/stereo-/chemoselective cis- and trans-thioboration on demand, affording synthetically versatile and densely functionalized vinyl boron/vinyl sulfide derivatives in a straightforward manner without the need for a transition-metal catalyst.

Transition-Metal-Free Reductive Hydroxymethylation of Isoquinolines.

Project description:A transition-metal-free reductive hydroxymethylation reaction has been developed, enabling the preparation of tetrahydroisoquinolines bearing C4-quaternary centers from the corresponding isoquinolines. Deuterium labelling studies and control experiments enable a potential mechanism to be elucidated which features a key Cannizzaro-type reduction followed by an Evans-Tishchenko reaction. When isoquinolines featuring a proton at the 4-position are used, a tandem methylation-hydroxymethylation occurs, leading to the formation of 2 new C-C bonds in one pot.

Direct phosphorylation of benzylic C-H bonds under transition metal-free conditions forming sp3C-P bonds.

Project description:Direct phosphorylation of benzylic C-H bonds was achieved in a biphasic system under transition metal-free conditions. A selective radical/radical sp3C-H/P(O)-H cross coupling was proposed, and various substituted toluenes were applicable. The transformation provided a promising method for constructing sp3C-P bonds.
