Project description:Bio-based adhesives have low water resistance and they are less durable than synthetic adhesives, which limits their exterior applications. In this study, a bio adhesive was developed from soybean meal and larch tannin that was designed for exterior use. Phenol hydroxymethylated tannin oligomer (PHTO) was synthesized and then mixed with soybean meal flour in order to obtain a soybean meal-based adhesive (SPA). The results showed that the moisture absorption rate, residual rate, and solid content of SPA with 10 wt % PHTO (mass ratio with respect to the entire adhesive) were improved by 22.8%, 11.6%, and 6.8%, respectively, as compared with that of pure SPA. The wet shear strength of plywood with SPA with 10 wt % PHTO (boiling in 100 °C water for 3 h) was 1.04 MPa when compared with 0 MPa of pure SPA. This met the bond strength requirement of exterior-use plywood (GB/T 9846.3-2004). This improved adhesive performance was mainly due to the formation of a crosslinked structure between the PHTO and the protein and also PHTO self-crosslinking. The formaldehyde emission of the resulting plywood was the same as that of solid wood. The PHTO-modified SPA can potentially extend the applications of SPAs from interior to exterior plywood.

Project description:The discovery of novel and favorable fluorophores is critical for understanding many chemical and biological studies. High-resolution biological imaging necessitates fluorophores with diverse colors and high quantum yields. The maximum oscillator strength and its corresponding absorption wavelength of a molecule are closely related to the quantum yields and the emission spectrum of fluorophores, respectively. Thus, the core step to design favorable fluorophore molecules is to optimize the desired electronic transition properties of molecules. Here, we present MOLGENGO, a new molecular property optimization algorithm, to discover novel and favorable fluorophores with machine learning and global optimization. This study reports novel molecules from MOLGENGO with high oscillator strength and absorption wavelength close to 200, 400, and 600 nm. The results of MOLGENGO simulations have the potential to be candidates for new fluorophore frameworks.

Project description:Soybean meal (SM)-based adhesive exhibited a great potential to replace petroleum-derived ones to alleviate the energy crisis and eliminate carcinogenic formaldehyde. However, the bad water resistance (caused by low crosslinking density) and inherent brittleness of SM adhesive severely hindered its application. However, improving crosslinking density is generally accompanied by a toughness reduction of the adhesive. Herein, we developed a flexible long-chain starch with a hyper-branched structure (HD), and incorporated it with SM and a crosslinking agent to prepare a novel SM adhesive. Results showed that this adhesive exhibited both excellent water resistance and enhanced toughness. The wet bond strength of plywood fabricated using this adhesive was 354.5% higher than that of SM adhesive. These achievements are because introducing HD with hyper-branched groups enhanced crosslinking density, while HD's flexible long-chain structure improved toughness of the adhesive. This HD can promote the development of tough and hydrophobic bio-based composites.

Project description:Waterborne polyurethane has been proven to be an ideal additive for the preparation of hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties. This work reports that a satisfactory adhesion of acrylamide hydrogels can be obtained by introducing a large amount of waterborne polyurethane into system. A series of polyurethane hydrogels was prepared by using one-pot method with acrylamide monomer and 2-hydroxymethyl methacrylate end-modified waterborne polyurethane emulsion. The hydrogels exhibit good strength (greater than 30 KPa), wide range of adjustable strain (200%-800%), and excellent compression fatigue resistance. The performance improvement is attributed to the fact that the polyurethane emulsion containing double bonds provides chemical crosslinking and forms polyurethane microregions due to hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions. The hydrogel shows extensive and repeatable adhesion on diverse substrates. This simple preparation method through polyurethane crosslinked hydrogels is expected to become a low-cost and efficient preparation strategy for hydrogel adhesives.

Project description:In recent years, there has been increasing interest in developing novel materials based on natural biopolymers as a renewable alternative to petroleum-based plastics. The availability of proteins derived from agricultural by-products, along with their favourable properties, has fostered a renewed interest in protein-based materials, promoting research in innovative technologies. In this study, we propose the use of rapeseed protein-rich meal as the main ingredient for the preparation of novel sustainable materials combining excellent environmental properties such as biodegradability and renewability. The application of sustainable products in the present high-tech society requires the modification of the basic native properties of these natural compounds. The original route proposed in this paper consists of preparation via the compression moulding of flexible biomaterials stabilized by crosslinkers/chain extenders. An investigation of the effects of different denaturing and disulfide bond reducing agents, crosslinkers, and preparation conditions on the material mechanical behaviour demonstrated that the novel materials have appreciable strength and stiffness. The results show the potential of utilizing full meal from vegetable by-products to prepare protein-based materials with guaranteed ecofriendly characteristics and mechanical properties adequate for specific structural applications.

Project description:This work presents a proof-of-concept study in artificial-intelligence-assisted (AI-assisted) chemistry where a machine-learning-based molecule generator is coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, synthesis, and measurement. Although deep-learning-based molecule generators have shown promise, it is unclear to what extent they can be useful in real-world materials development. To assess the reliability of AI-assisted chemistry, we prepared a platform using a molecule generator and a DFT simulator, and attempted to generate novel photofunctional molecules whose lowest excited states lie at desired energetic levels. A 10 day run on the 12-core server discovered 86 potential photofunctional molecules around target lowest excitation levels, designated as 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 nm. Among the molecules discovered, six were synthesized, and five were confirmed to reproduce DFT predictions in ultraviolet visible absorption measurements. This result shows the potential of AI-assisted chemistry to discover ready-to-synthesize novel molecules with modest computational resources.

Project description:Microbial fermentation of plant material alters the composition of volatile and non-volatile plant natural products. We investigated the antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral properties of extracts of defatted soybean meal fermented with Aspergillus fumigatus F-993 or A. awamori FB-133 using in vitro methods. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of soybean meal fermented with A. awamori FB-133 and A. fumigatus F-993 identified 26 compounds with 11,14-octadecadienoic acid and methyl ester (63.63%) and 31 compounds with butylated hydroxytoluene (66.83%) and ?-myrcene (11.43%) as main constituents, respectively. The antioxidant activities of DSM extract were 3.362?±?0.05 and 2.11?±?0.02?mmol TE/mL, FDSM treated with A. awamori FB-133 were 4.763?±?0.05 and 3.795?±?0.03?mmol TE/mL and FDSM treated with A. fumigatus F-993 were 4.331?±?0.04 and 3.971?±?0.02?mmol TE/mL as determined by ABTS and FRAP assays, respectively. Both fermented extracts had better antioxidant activity than the unfermented extract as shown by multiple antioxidant activity assays. The concentration of fermented extracts required for 50% inhibition of cell viability was significantly lower than that of the unfermented extract when tested against the human liver cancer cell line HepG2 as shown by cell viability assays, indicating strong anticancer activity. The IC50 values for DSM, FDSM with A. fumigatusF-993 and FDSM with A. awamori FB-133 were27, 16.88 and 8.60 ?g/mL, respectively. The extract of FDSM with A. awamori FB-133 showed the strongest anticancer activity, compared to DSM and FDSM with A. FumigatusF-993 extracts. Fermented extracts also reduced hepatitis A virus titres to a greater extent than unfermented extracts, thus showing strong antiviral property. Hepatitis A virus titres were reduced by 2.66 and 3 log10/0.1?mL by FDSM with A. fumigatusF-993 and FDSM by A.awamori FB-133, respectively, compared to DSM (5.50 log10/0.1?mL). Thus, the fermentation of soybean meal with A. fumigatusF-993 or A. awamori FB-133 improves the therapeutic effect of soybean extracts, which can be used in traditional medicine.

Project description:Common adhesives stick to a wide range of materials immediately after they are applied to the surfaces. To prevent indiscriminate sticking, smart adhesive materials that adhere to a specific target surface only under particular conditions are desired. Here we report a polymer hydrogel modified with both β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) moieties (βCD-bpy gel) as a functional adhesive material responding to metal ions as chemical stimuli. The adhesive property of βCD-bpy gel based on interfacial molecular recognition is expressed by complexation of metal ions to bpy that controlled dissociation of supramolecular cross-linking of βCD-bpy. Moreover, adhesion of βCD-bpy gel exhibits selectivity on the kinds of metal ions, depending on the efficiency of metal-bpy complexes in cross-linking. Transduction of two independent chemical signals (metal ions and host-guest interactions) is achieved in this adhesion system, which leads to the development of highly orthogonal macroscopic joining of multiple objects.

Project description:Based on the phase separation phenomenon in micro-droplets, polymer-lipid Janus particles were prepared on a microfluidic flow focusing chip. Phase separation of droplets was caused by solvent volatilization and Janus morphology was formed under the action of interfacial tension. Because phase change from solid to liquid of the lipid hemisphere could be triggered by physiological temperature, the lipid hemisphere could be used for rapid release of drugs. While the polymer we selected was pH sensitive that the polymer hemisphere could degrade under acidic conditions, making it possible to release drugs in a specific pH environment, such as tumor tissues. Janus particles with different structures were obtained by changing the experimental conditions. To widen the application range of the particles, fatty alcohol and fatty acid-based phase change materials were also employed to prepare the particles, such as 1-tetradecanol, 1-hexadecanol and lauric acid. The melting points of these substances are higher than the physiological temperature, which can be applied in fever triggered drug release or in thermotherapy. The introduction of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) enabled the formation of multicompartment particles with three distinct materials. With different degradation properties of each compartment, the particles generated in this work may find applications in programmed and sequential drug release triggered by multiple stimuli.

Project description:The necessary replacement of fish meal with other protein source in diets of commercially important fish has prompted the study of the effect of the inclusion of different vegetable proteins sources on growth performance and on the gastro-intestinal tract. Currently, soybean meal is the primary protein source as a fish meal replacement because of its low price and high availability. Likewise, it is been documented that the ingestion of soybean meal by several fish species, such as salmonids and carp, triggers a type of intestinal inflammation called enteritis. In this paper, we analyzed the effects of the ingestion of soybean meal and two of its components, soy protein and soy saponin, on zebrafish to establish the basis for using zebrafish larvae as a model for fish nutrition. We took advantage of the existence of different transgenic lines, which allowed us to perform in vivo analysis. Our results indicated that larvae that were feed with soybean meal developed a clear intestinal inflammation as early as two day after beginning the diet. Moreover, we determined that is not the soy protein present in the diet but the soy saponin that is primarily responsible for triggering the immune response. These findings support the use of zebrafish screening assays to identify novel ingredients that would to improved current fish diets or would formulate new ones.
